New Partnership Between Precious Sound and Apple Corps Ltd Celebrates Beatlemania

0

The four Liverpudlians stood in the airport, wide-eyed and chuckling. Three thousand screaming fans had traveled to JFK to see the landing of the plane carrying the Beatles, as their single “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” rocketed to the top of the US charts.

The tousle-headed foursome, in their first visit to the US, lapped up the adoration. “Are you a little embarrassed by the lunacy you cause?” asked one journalist at the JFK press conference. “No,’ said John. ‘It’s great.” “Marvelous,” added a beaming Ringo. Smiling, George said: “We love it.”

February 7th will mark the 60th anniversary of their arrival in the United States – and the begining of Beatlemania. And to celebrate the momentous moment, Precious Sound has teamed up with the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps Ltd, to release a limited edition Beatles vinyl record stabilizer set. The deal was brokered by Bravado International, The Beatles North American licensing agent.

The stabilizer is a vital addition to any vinyl lover’s kit: the 375gm (13.2 oz) stainless aluminum base, topped with a silver-coated copper Beatles insert, sits on top of the vinyl, helping to create a more steady, resonant sound and delighting the eye. Each stabilizer comes with 3 inserts, featuring iconic Beatles designs, including the Sgt. Pepper’s drum skin and Abbey Road crosswalk image. The swirling scenes and musical notes combine for a mesmerizing experience – truly taking Beatlemania to the next level. For Precious Sound, which specializes in creating playable gold, silver and platinum records and has just announced its first collaboration with Third Eye Blind, the stabilizer set is the obvious progression in creating musical magic.

‘We’re thrilled to be working with Bravado to produce these stabilizers – especially at such a significant anniversary in musical history,’ said Ursina Beerli, CEO and co-founder of Precious Sound. ‘The impact of that 1964 trip genuinely cannot be overstated. And we’re over the moon to be able to share these stabilizers – 1,964 of them – and these designs with the Beatles’ fans,’ adds Mark Sutton, Creative Director and co-founder of Precious Sound.

Joe Marziotto, who works with Apple Corps Ltd on the Beatles merchandising, said “the resurgence of interest in vinyl and our fan’s desire to own vinyl,  made the collaboration an obvious one.” Three Beatles compilation albums were in the top 20 Billboard vinyl charts over Thanksgiving of 2023, and in 2022 43 percent of all albums sold in the US were vinyl LPs. The vinyl boom is not going bust anytime soon: In the first half of 2023, vinyl LP sales were up 21.7 percent from the same period the year before.

“Beatles fans want the best listening experience possible, and we think the stabilizer is a big part of this,” said Marziotto. “We’re bringing together classic Beatles style with the best in analog listening experience, to mark a hugely significant musical milestone. The timing could not be better.”

The stabilizer set – three silver-coated inserts which can be swapped as a ‘lid’ to the aluminum stabilizer – is the first offering from Apple Corp and Precious Sound’s new partnership. And it is the first time music lovers will be able to buy directly from Precious Sound’s website, precioussound.com, in addition to select retailers.

The stabilizer set will be available for pre-sale on the Beatles website and Precious Sound website on January 17, 2024. The products will start shipping late January, in time to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Beatles arrival in the US.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin to Receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

0

Elton John and Bernie Taupin, one of the great songwriting duos of all time, will be the 2024 recipients of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced today. The prize is named for another legendary songwriting team, George and Ira Gershwin, whose papers are held by the Library.

John and Taupin will be honored with a tribute concert in Washington, D.C., that will premiere on PBS stations nationwide on April 8 at 8 p.m. ET (check local listings).

A once-in-a-lifetime meeting between John, a young piano player, and lyricist Taupin together in 1967, they have forged a songwriting partnership that continues after more than 50 years. Their process seems simple: Taupin writes lyrics and sends them to John who goes to work at the piano and creates a song. The results of their enduring partnership have been simply incredible.

“Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written some of the most memorable songs of our lives. Their careers stand out for the quality and broad appeal of their music and their influence on their fellow artists,” Hayden said. “More than 50 years ago, they came from across the pond to win over Americans and audiences worldwide with their beautiful songs and rock anthems. We’re proud to honor Elton and Bernie with the Gershwin Prize for their incredible impact on generations of music lovers.”

“Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” are just a few songs they wrote together that became timeless standards. Not to mention the fun they had with “Bennie and The Jets” and “Crocodile Rock,” which became their first No. 1 single in the U.S. in 1973.

“I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that that one day this might be bestowed upon us,” Elton John said. “It’s an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized like this. I’m so honored.”

“To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept,” Bernie Taupin said.

Today, John is among the top-selling solo artists of all time with more than 70 Top 40 hits over the course of six decades, including nine No. 1s and 29 Top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100. He has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. John holds the record for the biggest-selling physical single of all time with Taupin’s rewritten lyrics for “Candle in the Wind 1997,” which sold more than 33 million copies. In 2018, he was named the most successful male solo artist in Billboard Hot 100 chart history. In America, John holds the record for the longest span between Billboard Top 40 hits at 50 years.

In 1992, John established the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which continues to be a leader in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. The foundation has raised more than $565 million for HIV/AIDS grants that have funded more than 3,000 projects in over 90 countries to care for patients and provide education for AIDS prevention. His music and charitable service have been honored with a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II; the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest award; and the National Humanities Medal awarded by President Joe Biden at the White House in 2022.

Since launching his first tour in 1970, John has delivered more than 4,000 performances in more than 80 countries. His work has spanned recording studios, stadiums, stages and screens — always with music that resonates with new generations of audiences. Disney’s “The Lion King,” carried by John’s tunes, continues to be one of Broadway’s longest running shows.

In January, John won an Emmy Award for outstanding variety special for his show “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium,” making him just the 19th performer to achieve rare EGOT status, having also won five Grammys, two Oscars for his work on “The Lion King” and with Taupin on the movie “Rocketman,” and a Tony Award for the score to the Broadway musical “Aida.”

Soon John and Taupin will have a Gershwin Prize to add to the mix for an even more exclusive distinction.

While their work has been intertwined for decades as co-writers, Taupin often preferred to stay behind the scenes. In their first two years, Taupin and John mostly wrote for other artists. Their first album, “Empty Sky” in 1969, was followed by “Elton John” in 1970. That second album, including the single “Your Song,” helped define their style for soaring ballads and rock songs. Taupin’s narrative songwriting, influenced by folk music, blues and country, offered the words that helped John’s melodies soar.

In addition to his work with John, Taupin has written hit songs for other artists, including Starship’s “We Built This City” and Heart’s “These Dreams,” as well as songs for Alice Cooper and Brian Wilson. In 2006, he earned a Golden Globe for “A Love That Will Never Grow Old” from the movie “Brokeback Mountain.”

Taupin moved to Southern California, became a U.S. citizen, and developed a love for the American West. He competed in weekend horse shows and hosted a competition for cowboys at his Santa Barbara ranch. All along, he continued writing for John from a distance, and began writing and making music with his Americana band, Farm Dogs. Taupin also turned to another of his passions — painting abstract and contemporary mixed-media — and he considers art his full-time career.

The 1975 album “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” has been called their autobiographical album as alter egos, with the song “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” describing their partnership that has survived as one of the most important relationships of their lives. Taupin and John were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2023, John inducted Taupin into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bestowed in recognition of the legendary songwriting team of George and Ira Gershwin, the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song is the nation’s highest award for influence, impact and achievement in popular music. The honoree is selected by the Librarian of Congress in consultation with a board of scholars, producers, performers, songwriters and music specialists. Previous recipients are Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Sir Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and the late Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Garth Brooks, Lionel Richie and Joni Mitchell.

Established in 2007, the prize honors living musical artists whose contributions in the field of popular song exemplify the standard of excellence associated with George and Ira Gershwin. Criteria for selection include: artistic merit; influence in promoting music as a vehicle of cultural understanding; impact and achievement in entertaining and informing audiences; and inspiring new generations of musicians.

In making the selection, the Librarian of Congress consulted leading members of the music and entertainment communities, as well as curators from the Library’s Music Division, American Folklife Center and National Audio-Visual Conservation Center.

John and Taupin will receive the Gershwin Prize at an all-star concert in Washington, D.C., on March 20. PBS stations nationwide will premiere the concert — “Elton John and Bernie Taupin: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song” — at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, April 8, (check local listings), available via broadcast and streaming on PBS.org and the PBS App as part of the co-produced Emmy Award-winning music series. It will also be available to U.S. Department of Defense locations around the world via the American Forces Network.

“Outside” Angle: Halifax, UK Late Bloomer Gideon Foster Sees The Big Picture On New Single

0

Anyone who thinks the music business is by definition a young man’s pursuit needs to meet Gideon Foster. Having come to the singer-songwriter game in his mid-40s, the Halifax, UK-based artist is now 54 and sharing the sort of becalmed wisdom only age can provide on his latest single, “Outside Looking In.”

Landing with an audibly self-assured grace, the song is a meditation in both content and sound. Symphonic key swells, jangly guitar arpeggios and a shuffling, neo-trap drum beat snake in and out under Foster’s whispery, reverberating vocals as he gently gets his point across. That point? That at the end of the day, “out of the loop” isn’t such a bad place to be if you’re at peace with yourself.

But I’m not playing this game I’m just staring in windows Outside looking in
How long things stay the same
I’m holding all the aces
Outside looking in

Epiphanies have a way of coming to Foster, who says he started writing songs at 46 as part of a spiritual awakening that put him on an entirely new life path. While there had always been music in his background, he hadn’t been serious about it until one day when, almost on a whim, he picked up a guitar that had been lying around the house for years. The original tunes that tumbled out kept coming until he found himself quitting his corporate gig and pursuing his new passion full-time.

\

Now, six years later, he has a bunch of singles, an EP and an album (2023’s Prophecy) under his belt, with another full-lengther in the works. “Outside Looking In” is a preview of what that forthcoming opus might sound like – not an easy prediction to make with this particular artist, who says he doesn’t like to tie himself to “any particular genre, style or influence” – and just as important, what it will have to say about Foster and how he sees the world.

“I think there is too much focus on everything having to be clear cut, black and white,” he says. “But life really isn’t like that. The truth is largely subjective. (It) may be just my age, but I prefer nuance.”

Calgary Rockers Redhead Mack Band Assures Us That Our Luck Is Going To Change on Feel-Good “Once Again”

0

Sometimes when you’re in a cycle of bad luck, it can seem like nothing is ever going to change. Enter Calgary-based Redhead Mack Band with a little bit of reassurance: It’s all going to be okay. That’s the gist of their pulsing, feel-good new single “Once Again” – available now – from their new album You Know That You Want To.

With percussive electric guitar, a driving beat, and a soaring chorus, “Once Again” begins with the story of someone who feels like they’re locked in an inevitable cycle of broken relationships, all blurring together in the dysfunction of sameness. But then the chorus rushes in with some positivity and a fist pump to remind the narrator – and us – that it will eventually get better:

I’ll take some time, to look around
Get my feet, on the ground
I know from here that things will get better
But right now I just want to forget

But I’m here, I’m okay
And tomorrow’s a brand new day

“The song encourages taking time spent alone to recover and reset,” the band explains. “And then it ends – quite happily — looking back over a successful relationship that stands out from everything before.”

So, the moral of the story, essentially, is this: Don’t give up, even if things appear doomed. A little ray of hope, positivity, and good old self-care can go a long way.
Redhead Mack Band’s new album You Know That You Want To is a guitar-centric romp centered around the idea that we’re all in this together. Each song on the album encourages listeners to find their own voice, look after each other, and to work together. Diversity doesn’t need to cause division, and peace doesn’t require homogenization. It’s also the sound of four guys having fun!

Redhead Mack Band is a Calgary rock band that sprung out the Covid pandemic. Previously folky Redhead Mack singer Kevin Phillips picked up the electric guitar, and was joined by guitarist Lee Carlson, bass player Jared Wiebe, and drummer Ian Fraser Love. They started making noise together and liked what it was turning into. Their music urges you to let go and just rock the hell out.

Kingston, Jamaica/Toronto, ON Reggae/Hip Hop Sensation Dudsymil Releases ‘The Frequency’ EP

0

Kingston, Jamaica-born, Toronto, ON-based rising sensation Dudsymil declares the release of his brand-new EP, “The Frequency,” a mollifying listening experience throughout the five tracks. This project completely deflects from Dudsymil’s previous EP, “Deep Rivers,” a body of work that delivered such dark themes at full length.

“The Frequency” is a show of the singer’s evolution of sound. With a formidable opener as “Right Now,” that promises to elicit some salacious emotions from female listeners. In each track, Dudsymil and his production team consistently convey the stand-out theme of “good vibes” in various aspects of daily living. “The essence of the EP, The Frequency, is a vibe that I feel has been given to me by a higher power, and I’m excited to share it with the world,” the singer expands.

Dudsymil’s spontaneous approach to each track translates well to the seasoned listening ear. The rawness in each lyric delivered, and the beat selection for each song will appeal to his listeners.

On “Party”, the singer enlists producer, Executive Scott, as composer and co-writer. Initially, Scott gravitated to Dudsymil right after listening to his debut album and then decided to come on board to work on this track.

This track was mostly driven by the reggae singer’s constant frustration with everything wrong about society.

“I envisioned this being a world song that will enable healing while at the same time providing high energy required for partying.”

The follow-up tracks “Policy” and “Symple” illuminate the theme of couples in love by fusing authentic reggae and Afrobeat components into the production. These tracks allow the listener to get lost in the vivid imagery the lines immediately take you to. Adding on to the tracks being inspired by real-life occurrences elevates the quality of “The Frequency” EP.

Dudsymil concludes the project with EP name track, “The Frequency”, a collaborative effort with frequent musical partner, 3x Juno nominated singer, Blk Orchid. The pair joined forces on a relaxing record, “Sail Away”, a song about seeking comfort in a loved one.

“The Frequency” surpasses the bar set on the previous track, simply by the zestful energy and the back-and- forth singing delivered by these two artists.

The rising star first made his official impact back in December 2022, with his debut album “Deep Rivers.” This album showcased all he learned, acquired since his debut to the scene – recording music together with Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor on a 24-inch track.

During that time, Dudsymil explored music production, and in-depth recording and laid the foundation of his “meds music” genre. With subsequent radio play on Z1035, gaining a spike in popularity over “Tdot//Raptors We Go Hard” featuring Sticky Wow during peak Raptors playoff seasons. In 2020, the singer collaborated with international Jamaican singer Serani on an unforgettable track “Never Too Far.” This career-defining moment solidified Dudsymil’s boosting eminence, leaving his core fans yearning for more.

Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Fest, a festival unlike any other, will take over The Lawn at CAS, a 54-acre campus located on the scenic Olentangy River, which runs through the heart of the city. Like Guy, it will be bold, loud, bad-ass, and full of flavor with unparalleled surprises, one-of-a-kind programming with the nation’s top chefs, jaw-dropping music artists, and Guy-curated curveballs all weekend. Flavortown Fest will feature eats and experiences from some of Guy’s favorite Triple D restaurants from the Columbus area and around the country while offering the ultimate experience for foodies to eat, drink and party with the Mayor of Flavortown himself.

Bitchin’ Avenue is the Main Street and heartbeat of Flavortown Fest, offering the opportunity to stroll across the festival grounds boardwalk-style where out-of-bounds moments await at each intersection. Flavortown “residents” (aka attendees) can swing by the Not So General, General Store to purchase exclusive Flavortown, Guy Fieri and other collectibles, rest up at The Pit Stop where the cars will be as classic as old-school diner staples or camp out on Chill Hill with their friends to take in the vibes in a relaxed environment. The Flavortown Fest Hometown Stage will be a special place to host comedy battles, interactive art demos and veteran programming supported by the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM).

GA passes are available for residents looking for an awesome event full of top dishes and greatest hits. The GA experience provides access to Bitchin’ Avenue, The Pit Stop, Chill Hill and more throughout the festival for turbo-charged food and stellar music performances. The fun won’t stop there as Flavortown Fest brings Flavortown Beach to Columbus so residents can enjoy the show from the Main Music Stage with their toes in the sand. Flavortown Fest residents will also get to experience The Culinary Stadium, a one-of-a-kind arena to witness a spectacular culinary competition between some of the biggest names in the business.

Residents looking to dial up their “Triple F” experience can purchase a GA+ ticket inclusive of all the rockin’ perks of general admission plus access to the GA+ Lounge bringing awesome access to shaded seating, dedicated restrooms, exclusive bar and food options and great views of the Main and Hometown Stage.

VIP passes include everything from GA and GA+ passes and are for the resident who wants access to everything Flavortown Fest offers. From priority seating and exclusive access to the standing pit in front of the Main Stage to special menus and premium bars, VIP ticket holders will have the ultimate flavor-filled experience. Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Fest, in partnership with the Guy Fieri Foundation and CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, will launch Flavortown Cares, an impact program to support the Columbus community which will donate a portion of proceeds from every ticket sold to support the NVMM, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ohio (RMCH) and the Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC). As a part of the partnership, NVMM, RMCH and MOFC will have a presence on-site at Flavortown Fest and integration throughout the festival’s programming with opportunities for Triple F attendees to learn about and support each group on-site.
