Rival Sons’ Jay Buchanan Unleashes Solo Fire on ‘Weapons of Beauty’ with New Song “Caroline”

0

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Jay Buchanan, frontman of the Grammy-nominated rock group Rival Sons, will release his long-awaited debut solo album, Weapons of BeautyFebruary 6 on Sacred Tongue Records via Thirty Tigers. The album will be available in a variety of formats, including limited-edition autographed color vinyl and CD, exclusively through Sacred Tongue / Second Sun. Pre-save/pre-order HERE.

In advance of the release, Buchanan shares a new song, “Caroline,” today.

“I suppose that writing about unquenchable grief allows you a kind of permission to pay respect to those deep chasms in your life without wallowing in them,” Buchanan shares of the track. “Putting it in a song lets you buy the ticket and take the ride and then move on.”

Produced by longtime collaborator and Grammy Award-winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell) and written in the solitude of an underground bunker deep in the Mojave Desert, Weapons of Beauty is the result of months of reflection and experimentation—an unfiltered 10-song collection that captures Buchanan’s raw vocals and lived-in storytelling.

Reflecting on the project, Buchanan shares, “As music continues to be choked out by technology, I wanted to draw pictures in the dirt. This approach is right with me and I’ve just come to a point where there is no longer a choice. Weapons Of Beauty is the sound of these plates shifting within me, too loud to ignore. Surprisingly, I’ve never known a vulnerability to feel so empowering.”

Additionally, Cobb reflects, “I think this record is like seeing into the heart of Jay, no filter, no noise, just pure raw emotion.”

Ahead of the release, Buchanan recently made his acting debut in the new Bruce Springsteen biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, where he appeared as frontman of the Stone Pony house band, and was introduced to director Scott Cooper, who sequenced the new album.

In addition to Buchanan and Cobb, Weapons of Beauty also features contributions from Brian Allen (bass), Chris Powell (drums), Leroy Powell (guitar), J.D. Simo (guitar) and Philip Towns (keys).

Born in San Bernardino, CA, Buchanan began writing songs as soon as he could hold a guitar, honing his craft through busking, home recordings and constant artistic reinvention. Widely respected by his peers, Buchanan has collaborated with artists such as Jason Isbell, The Bee Gees, Miranda Lambert, Massive Attack, The Bloody Beetroots and Brandi Carlile, in addition to his work as frontman of the 2x Grammy-nominated rock band Rival Sons—Buchanan (vocals, acoustic guitar), Scott Holiday (lead guitar), Mike Miley (drums) and Dave Beste (bass). Hailed as “one of the best live acts around” (Glide), the group has released eight studio albums to date, toured extensively across the globe, including sharing stages with Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz, and performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Late Show with James Corden, George Lopez’s Lopez Tonight and Later…with Jools Holland.

Grace Ives Ignites a Bold New Era with “Avalanche,” “Dance with Me” and “My Mans”

0

Much-lauded vocalist, songwriter and producer Grace Ives returns with three new songs today: “Avalanche”—which debuts today alongside a music video, “Dance with Me” and “My Mans.” Written and produced with Ariel Rechtshaid, the songs are out via True Panther Records/Capitol Records.

Grace writes:

This music is a step outside of the house. It’s ambitious in its attempt to capture my will to change. I’ve always waited around for things to get better in my life rather than taking action and responsibility. I’ve stayed at jobs that I hated for far too long, stayed inside or in bed for days ignoring outside advice, hurting my body and asking God to make my pain go away instead of breaking my own destructive cycles. In 2023, after touring Janky Star, I hit a true rock bottom and have been finding my way out of the dark hole I dug for myself since then. I was drinking, lying and hiding. I fell down stairs; I called out sick; I stole; I was a shitty girlfriend, a bad daughter; I abandoned the few friends I had; I cried and vomited beyond bile. Gross. When I finally stopped drinking, I stopped lying. I gave up trying to control everything and let life take over. I saw my life clearly. Yes, I was miserable—my boyfriend haaaated me (valid), my friends and family were disappointed and hurt (fair), and my tailbone was FUCKED—but I actually saw my life for what it was: a disaster! I had abandoned myself, abandoned my path, abandoned music and love. I snapped out of it and made a slow-motion return to my place in the world.

What I write about in this music follows this story of my “crash out,” if you will—a life of drinking and hiding and hurting that ended in betrayal and hospital bills galore, and the will to change that followed. It’s the confidence of the storm and the clarity in the calm of the aftermath (douchey). I’ve lived in one place my whole life. I’ve loved one person my whole life—and I believe this is beautiful, but I’ve had an honest desire to experience more that hadn’t been actualized until I came to California to write.

In and out of the studio, I felt myself existing in a world bigger than my house in Brooklyn. I wrote in different libraries all over LA, trying to figure out what to say in these songs. Somehow, this time around, I felt safer out in the world than I did holed up in my nest. Like trying to be a good person while surrounded by new places and people was a more secure plan than trying to change all alone at home. I felt safe getting lost, driving with friends, driving alone. Stopping in random motels and going down wrong roads felt way less dangerous than the life of falling, flailing and sneaking around I had gotten so used to in New York. Out in the open, in the wild, on the road, there was nowhere for me to hide. Nothing to steal. Nothing to chase. It’s a proper antidote to self-inflicted isolation and sedation.

This music feels more real to me than anything I’ve made before. I’ve played more instruments in the past year making this record than I’ve played in the majority of my life. I’ve let my heart and my hands work freely. I wanted to live in LA alone. I lived in LA alone. I wanted people to trust me. I tried to be open and treat people with more sincerity. I learned how to drive. I drove. The sky expanded around me and reminded me that I was not, in fact, the center of the universe. Just a small part of it. Thank god.

This era of my life feels like freedom. There’s still some shrapnel on the ground from my chaotic years, but it doesn’t drag me down so much. I think I can hear this in the music. The songs I’ve made feel spacious, clear and confident. I feel their darkness, but also their buzzing energy to keep moving. The music is serious, but also bursting with joy. I talk more these days, I say yes to plans, fall in love with strangers and try to fix the things I break. I’ve been on a road, and I’m a confident driver (maybe to a fault). I’m not lonely, I’m alive and I’m laughing, and I feel my heart beat really fast, and it doesn’t scare me like it used to. I’m really here, and I’m trying not to hide or bail.

Grace Ives burst onto the scene in 2022 with her album Janky Star, hailed as one of the best of the year by The New York Times, NPR and Pitchfork, among many others. NYLON lauded Janky Star as “a playful, irreverent, and unexpectedly resonant collection of songs” that was the “year’s most relatable pop record.” In celebration of the release, the Brooklyn-raised vocalist and songwriter made her T.V. debut with “Lullaby” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” toured North America and Europe, and made appearances at Pitchfork Music Festival, Outside Lands and more. More from Ives is imminent.

Mark Ambor Moves the Masses with “Closer To Me” and a Monumental New Era Ahead

0

Breakout artist, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Ambor returns with a new song, “Closer To Me,” out today via Capitol Records—listen HERE.

“I wrote ‘Closer To Me’ in a hotel room in London during the Rockwood tour,” Ambor says. “At the time, I initially wrote it about someone I was seeing, but when that ended, the song took on a new meaning for me. It became a song that reminded me of the past two years and the appreciation and love I have for every single person who’s shown support for anything I’ve ever put out. It’s been nothing short of a dream to get to meet, learn, celebrate and ultimately become closer to each and every one of them.”

The track comes on the heels of a completely sold-out European tour, while Ambor’s North American headline tour earlier this year instantly sold-out, with 50,000 tickets sold. He also performed a run of global marquee festival sets—Lollapalooza, Outside Lands and Governors Ball, among others. He recently attended the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, where his song “Belong Together” was nominated for MTV Push Performance of the Year.

“Closer To Me” ushers in a new era for Ambor, as he gears up for a massive 2026 with more music imminent. Earlier this year, he shared “Who Knows,” featuring production by himself, Ian Fitchuk (Beyoncé, Maggie Rogers), Ammo (Teddy Swims, Kesha) and longtime collaborator Noel Zancanella (Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys).

Ambor continues to grow after a landmark 2024, which saw the release of his debut album Rockwood. His breakout single “Belong Together” is world-wide hit, with 25x platinum certifications globally, over 1 billion global streams to date and cracking the Billboard Hot 100. He performed the track for his national television debuts on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and TODAY.

From sharing his first ever recordings with family and friends in 2016 to quickly garnering millions of monthly listeners and selling out his first headlining tour in less than a day, Mark Ambor’s rise has been meteoric. Since his debut EP, Hello World, won him a growing global fanbase, the New York-based artist has sold out headline tours across the world, bringing his dynamic live show to crowds across the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Ambor’s most recent headline, The Rockwood Tour, instantly sold out and saw new dates added in a number of cities due to overwhelming demand, including a two-night stand at New York City’s Irving Plaza. Ambor’s debut album, Rockwood, was released in August of last year to widespread praise from PEOPLE and Billboard—who named Ambor as their October 2024 Chartbreaker. More from Ambor is imminent.

Jake Minch Drops Bonus Track “Leave” as More George Tour Powers On Across North America

0

Following his full-length debut album George, breakout singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jake Minch shares a new song, “Leave”.

“There’s one more song we recorded with the album that I think should see the light of day,” says Jake. “‘Leave’ was my answer to the question ‘where does all that love go after the relationship is over?’”

“Leave” serves as a bonus track to George and coincides with the second leg of Jake’s More George on Tour headline dates across North America. The 17-show run kicked off on November 4 in Austin, and will stop in Dallas, Madison, Indianapolis, Columbus, Richmond, Providence and more. See below for a complete list of dates. Tickets and more information HERE.

George came out this past summer via 2for2 projects/Mercury Records; listen HERE. The album has received a host of critical praise, including NPR Music, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, Ones to Watch and more. Holler praises, “Like a Great American Novel cut down to three-minute pop songs, [George] captures small-town restlessness and alienation in the same way that Raymond Carver or Carson McCullers were always able to, with the added incentive that you can scream along to them at the top of your lungs,” while Atwood Magazine hails George, saying, “Spanning themes from the excruciating heartbreak of young love, to what it feels like to go home again, to grief and suicide, George delicately weaves a poetic web of truths.” He recently performed tracks from the album at a Pigeons and Planes Medium Sized Backyard session—watch HERE.

George is about my two years in L.A. and my experience falling victim to my ‘middle-of-the-country-syndrome,’” says Jake. “It’s about being a martyr with nothing to die for and needing to fuck up some great things in order to see that.”

Recorded and produced between Los Angeles and Connecticut by Jake and Tony Berg (Taylor Swift, boygenius) with contributions from Mason Stoops (Lizzy McAlpine, Role Model), George finds the 22-year-old storyteller exploring grief, guilt and identity through the complexities in his personal relationships. Titled after Jake’s birth name, George captures the angst and discomfort of growing up and leaving home with a disarming vulnerability that traces the album’s 12 tracks. The singles “Fingers and Clothes” and “Drawing a Tattoo” were released earlier this summer to critical acclaim.

Jake recently wrapped up an extensive run of headline shows, including stops at Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right, Los Angeles’ Moroccan Lounge, Chicago’s Schubas Tavern, Toronto’s Velvet Underground, Nashville’s Cannery Hall and more. Jake performed alongside numerous surprise guests throughout the tour including Lizzy McAlpine, Grace Enger and Alix Page.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Jake Minch burst onto the scene in 2023 with his hit single “handgun” racking up 1.3 million views on the song’s initial teaser and earning support from the likes of Noah Kahan, Lizzy McAlpine, Zach Bryan, Gracie Abrams, Fletcher and many more. Over the last few years, the 2for2 projects/Mercury Records artist has garnered a dedicated fanbase through his deeply personal lyrics on love, growing up and grief. Jake has toured the world over, sharing stages with the likes of The Head And The Heart, Jeremy Zucker, Ben Abraham, Holly Humberstone, Grace Enger and Sadie Jean.

Bob Dylan’s Folk-Rock Spark Shines on ‘Bootleg Series Vol. 18: Through The Open Window’

0

Bob Dylan’s highly acclaimed Bootleg Series Volume 18: Through The Open Window, 1956-1963 is out today on Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment—order/listen/share here.

Through The Open Window tells the story of Dylan’s emergence and maturation as a songwriter and performer, from Minnesota to the Greenwich Village bohemia in the early 1960s. Arriving amidst a global resurgence in appreciation for Dylan, the collection includes rare Columbia Records outtakes, recordings made at club dates, in tiny informal gatherings, in friends’ apartments, and at jam sessions in long-gone musicians’ hangouts. Many of the recordings are exceedingly rare; others have never been presented in any form.

The box set is a unique account of Dylan’s early years, when he honed his talent, and transformed traditional folk songs and lyric sketches into some of his greatest and most enduring songs, including “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” It concludes with a previously unreleased recording, in its entirety, of Dylan’s landmark concert at Carnegie Hall on October 26, 1963. A culmination of Dylan’s exceptional early rise, that concert also marked the end of the beginning of Dylan’s long career.

“Of that time and those places, this collection is just a fragment,” writes author and historian Sean Wilentz in his 125-page liner notes essay. “Even so, as an aural record of an artist becoming himself—or in Dylan’s case, his first of many artistic selves—the collection aims to collapse time and space, not as a nostalgic reverie but as a living connection between the past and the present, the old and the new, which are never as distinct as we might think.”

The 8CD Deluxe set includes 139 tracks – 48 never-before released performances, as well as 38 super-rare cuts plus a hardcover book with extensive liner notes by Sean Wilentz and over 100 rare photographs. The 2CD and 4LP highlight editions include 42 tracks.

5 Surprising Facts About LL Cool J’s ‘Radio’

LL Cool J came out the gate in 1985 with fire in his voice, gold in his pen, and a boombox blasting over every block. His debut album ‘Radio’ wasn’t just the first LP from Def Jam—it was a seismic shift. Produced by Rick Rubin with hard-hitting beats and stripped-down swagger, ‘Radio’ brought hip hop from the lunch tables to the charts. One mic, one DJ, and one vision launched LL into legend status, sparking a new-school revolution that echoed coast to coast.

Here are 5 groundbreaking facts about ‘Radio’—the album that lit the fuse and let the bells ring:

1. LL was 17 with a demo and a dream
James Todd Smith sent his homemade tapes all over NYC, but it was Def Jam that saw the vision. His stage name—Ladies Love Cool James—was already a flex. When “I Need a Beat” dropped in 1984, it sold 100,000 copies and made LL a star before the album even hit. That single helped secure Def Jam’s distribution with Columbia and built the hype for ‘Radio’.

2. The first Def Jam album was all street, no filler
‘Radio’ hit with no gimmicks—just raw drum machines, scratching, and LL’s voice tearing through speakers. Rick Rubin’s “Reduced by” production style brought boom-bap minimalism into the mainstream. It was recorded at Chung King Studios and mastered on 42nd Street with one goal: make heads nod and radios explode.

3. “I Can’t Live Without My Radio” made the boombox a star
This wasn’t just a song—it was a street anthem. The JVC RC-M90 on the cover became iconic. LL’s love letter to his radio blasted through Krush Groove, rocked the charts, and landed at No. 15 on the R&B charts. It also brought him to Saturday night TV, where he became the first hip hop artist to perform on American Bandstand.

4. “Rock the Bells” had no bells, just bars
LL dropped the third single from ‘Radio’ with unmatched swagger. The album version skips the bells but not the impact—every rhyme hits like a heavyweight. The original 12-inch version clocked over 7 minutes and inspired remixes, samples, and even LL’s own “Mama Said Knock You Out” years later.

5. ‘Radio’ built the bridge to hip hop’s golden age
This was more than an album—it was a movement. ‘Radio’ kicked open doors for Def Jam, influenced Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions, and took hip hop from block parties to platinum plaques. LL toured with Run-DMC and Beastie Boys, rocked stages with Cut Creator, and showed the world that hip hop had arrived with power, poetry, and presence.

5 Surprising Facts About Living Colour’s ‘Vivid’

0

Living Colour’s ‘Vivid’ arrived on May 2, 1988 with strength, vision, and sound that stretched across genres and generations. The album reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and earned double platinum certification. With sharp lyrics, genre-blending grooves, and unmatched energy, ‘Vivid’ became a landmark in American rock. Every track carried purpose, and every performance left a mark.

Here are 5 powerful facts about the album that continues to shape music today:

1. “Cult of Personality” came from a single jam session
During a rehearsal at their Brooklyn loft, Corey Glover hummed a melody and Vernon Reid flipped through a notebook of phrases. One line—“Look in my eyes, what do you see?”—set the tone. The music followed quickly, and by the end of that session, the band had created their signature song.

2. The riff mixes hard rock with jazz energy
Vernon Reid built the guitar part from a melody Glover sang, using elements that echoed Led Zeppelin and Mahavishnu Orchestra. The result became one of the most recognizable riffs in rock. It appears on multiple “greatest” lists and showcases the band’s musical depth and precision.

3. The lyrics connect world leaders through charisma
“Cult of Personality” includes quotes from Malcolm X, John F. Kennedy, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The song also names Gandhi, Mussolini, Stalin, and Kennedy in the same verse. Reid described it as a reflection on power, appearance, and influence across political and cultural history.

4. Mick Jagger supported the band early on
After seeing Living Colour perform at CBGB, Mick Jagger produced two of their demos. His interest helped the band sign with Epic Records. They later opened for The Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheels tour, reaching stadium audiences across North America.

5. ‘Vivid’ became a visual and cultural force
The video for “Cult of Personality” earned heavy rotation on MTV and won multiple awards, including Best New Artist at the VMAs. The band performed on Saturday Night Live in 1989 and continued to bring their message to national audiences through television and touring.
