1. It Took 50 Drum Takes to Lock in the “Sandman” Groove
Lars Ulrich didn’t bang out “Enter Sandman” in one sweaty take—far from it. Producer Bob Rock demanded the kind of studio perfection that nearly drove the band off the rails. The Flower Kings will be releasing their 17th studio album LOVE on May 2nd, 2025. With 17 studio albums, countless live recordings, and performances at festivals and tours worldwide, over a 30-year career, their influence on progressive rock is undeniable and only continues to grow.

Roine Stolt describes the new track: “‘Burning Both Edges’ is another song from our album LOVE; We live in troubled times where stupidity and fear always seem to push us to yet another conflict, another war.

VOLUME Announce 2025 U.S. Tour in Support of Joy of ‘Navigation (A Trip Through the Eternal Unknown)’

Twentynine Palms, CA band Volume announce full US tour dates today supporting their new album Joy of Navigation (A Trip Through the Eternal Unknown).

The band is VOLUME and it deals primarily in density: Thick and weighty as the abundant sand surrounding their Twentynine Palms, CA hometown, but also comprised of a mass of fine grit that can sear the skin with a gust of wind, and quickly dissipate into the ether.

Yes, that is to say, VOLUME are purveyors of Heavy Acid Rock. Doomy psychedelia, but with more raw 70s punk brash than masquerading metal. VOLUME draw musical influences from bands such as The Stooges, MC5 and Black Flag to name a few, while also crafting their own distinctive heavy psychedelic identity. And, with Joy of Navigation, the band ventures into heavier, more psychedelic tones, while also keeping powerful hooks as the focus.

Originally formed in 1993 by ex-Fu Manchu singer Patrick Brink, the band has featured a revolving set of collaborators, with ex-Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell playing leads on the forthcoming Joy of Navigation mini-album. David Catching (QOTSA, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop) co-produced the tracks with Brink, as well as playing synth on the recording. Mike Amster (Nebula, Mondo Generator, Spoon Benders) plays drums on the mini-album. The current live lineup includes Mingus on drums, bassist Jason Hernandez and lead guitarist Derek Christensen.

Brink founded the band in order to take the lead and steer the musical reins down psychedelic rocking routes. Having performed with a number of acts including the aforementioned vocals for Fu Manchu in their early days, VOLUME offered Patrick a new creative outlet. Over their career the band has shared stages with Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon and Goatsnake, and performed at festivals including Emissions of the Monolith and Stoner Hands of Doom (SHoD).

Brink’s upbringing in the secluded desert town east of Joshua Tree and 60 miles north of Palm Springs had a huge impact on his songwriting. It is a place of beauty and harsh realities, and those contrasts are present throughout Patrick’s lyrics and songs. After getting into punk rock by accident in high school Patrick started his first band a couple of years later with the only other punks in town. This early love of punk rock inadvertently led him to the heavier bands on SST Records such as Wurm, SWA, DC3 and St. Vitus.

Heavy As F*ck (1996) and Love Is A Mountain And Heavy As F*ck (1998) were the band’s first recordings. In the Fall of 1998, the seven inch Check This Planet I’m Gone… was released on Superkool Records. Requesting Permission To Land (High Beam Records) was recorded with the help of Mike McHugh (Train, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion). Each song was recorded in one or two takes to retain the original heart and soul of the piece.

“It’s rock and roll. Not brain surgery,” says Patrick of the recording process. The end result is a potent blend of thirty-plus minutes of Psychedelic fuzzfest freakout and perhaps some of the rawest riffs you’re likely to hear.

VOLUME draw inspiration from a time when music was truly experimental and free. They see themselves as rock’n’roll torch bearers whose duty it is to bring the flame, intact, into the future. They invite you to join in that endeavor, for the “Joy of Navigation.”

RÜFÜS DU SOL are the Grammy-winning live electronic trio formed in Sydney Australia, composed of Jon George, James Hunt, and Tyrone Lindqvist, who are now one of the genre’s most highly regarded studio and touring acts. Counting Crows Release “Under The Aurora” Ahead of ‘Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!’ Album and Tour

Today, multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated rock band Counting Crows release their newest single, ‘Under The Aurora’, the latest offering from their highly anticipated new album Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, out May 9 via BMG.

Following the emotional depth of first single ‘Spaceman In Tulsa’, ‘Under The Aurora’ continues the band’s rich legacy of sweeping soundscapes and storytelling. The song captures a moment of solitude and reflection beneath nature’s most mysterious light show — a haunting yet hopeful meditation on escape, longing, and the wonder of the world above us.

Produced with the band’s signature blend of folk-infused instrumentation and lush, layered melodies, ‘Under The Aurora’ delivers a cinematic experience that underscores Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets! as a full-circle evolution of the band’s sound. This marks their first full-length album since 2021’s Butter Miracle: Suite One and their first collection of new songs in nearly five years.

Kadavar Shares Powerful New Single “Regeneration” Ahead of ‘I Just Want To Be A Sound’ Album

Berlin-based rock band Kadavar has released the third single “Regeneration” from their upcoming album, “I Just Want To Be A Sound”, out May 16 via Clouds Hill. The new single, along with the music video, follows the release of “Hysteria” and the album’s title track.

“This song celebrates change and new beginnings,” says guitarist Jascha Kreft. “When I joined the band, I had nothing but respect for how eager they were to push their vision forward rather than simply replicating their past work. It feels like we’re just getting started, and I can’t wait to see where we’re headed next.”

“Regeneration” is a powerful indicator of Kadavar’s evolving sound on their upcoming album. The band has undergone a significant transformation, embracing a bold new sonic direction. Over the past 15 years, Kadavar has morphed from retro-psychedelic stoner rockers into boundary-pushing sonic explorers, consistently defying expectations. Their latest shift—marked by a stripped-down, raw intensity—sees them shedding the past and embracing the unknown. With their signature blend of chaos and beauty, the new sound transcends genre and speaks directly to the core of the human experience.

Now a four-piece led by founders Lupus Lindemann and Tiger Bartelt, joined by guitarist Jascha Kreft and bassist Simon ‘Dragon’ Bouteloup, Kadavar’s declaration “I Just Want To Be A Sound” was inspired by a conversation in 2013. When Lindemann and Bartelt asked Bouteloup why he didn’t have any social media accounts, he simply replied: “I just want to be a sound.” The phrase stuck—and over the band’s 15-year journey, it has become a guiding principle: to be completely absorbed in their music, free from distraction or compromise.

From their early days as credible purveyors of retro-psychedelic stoner rock—embodying the contemporary coolness of Berlin’s hedonistic scene—to becoming globe-trotting sonic adventurers, Kadavar’s evolution has been driven by relentless creativity. With extensive touring and genre-defying performances, their music has become increasingly contemporary, shaped by the experience of the road and their ever-expanding creative vision.
