The Rolling Stones Return To ‘Voodoo Lounge’ For 30th Anniversary Editions

0

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Rolling Stones’ Grammy-winning 1994 album Voodoo Lounge, special editions in both physical and digital formats are being released this summer. The release includes four additional tracks which will be making their debut on streaming services. Available for pre order here.

The new editions, available from July 12, celebrate a studio set that sold more than six million copies worldwide including Stones favourites ‘You Got Me Rocking,’ Out Of Tears’ and the UK top 20 single ‘Love Is Strong,’ and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

The 30th anniversary releases, which will be augmented with a merch range, are a 2LP red and yellow vinyl edition, and a separate 2LP red and yellow vinyl which adds a white vinyl 10” disc featuring the four bonus tracks. Like the album, these were all Jagger-Richards compositions, all but one written at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin at the end of recording sessions for Voodoo Lounge.

The quartet of songs available for the first time on streaming platforms comprises ‘I’m Gonna Drive,’ the original B-side of the ‘Out Of Tears’ single, with a sterling slide guitar part by Ronnie Wood; the rollicking ‘So Young,’ which had its origins in the Some Girls sessions of 1978; ‘Jump On Top Of Me,’ the B-side of ‘You Got Me Rocking’; and ‘The Storm,’ another flipside that evoked the Stones’ unbreakable bond with Chicago blues.

Toronto-Based Original Pairs Capture an Ache for Lost Love on “Concord Avenue” from New Album ‘Long Play’

0

There’s something ‘bygone era’ about Toronto-based Original Pairs’ new single “Concord Avenue” – not just in its yearning for a better recent past, but in its sound. The song combines a ’50s Elvis croon with a mid-’60s rose-sunglasses filter to create a haunting and infectious power-pop ode to an apartment surrounded by intrigue.

Wandering the city at night, the narrator of “Concord Avenue” is plagued by the ghosts of a past romance. He recalls the warm, inviting beacon of a kitchen light, the ex-boyfriend who took his place, and the drunken writer who witnessed it all from the neighboring porch.

There’s a Byrds-era Los Angeles vibe to it all, aided by 12-string guitars, a bubbling bass line, and orchestral drum fills that put you right into the middle of this strange, riveting, grainy-photograph romance. Producer John Dinsmore offered up a 1964 Rickenbacker 12-string that the band used to create heavy emotion and a nostalgic atmosphere.

The song was inspired by an actual apartment on Concord Avenue in Toronto where Original Pairs’ founders Lisa Logan and Andrew Frontini first shared a secret and forbidden romance. The details of said romance may or may not actually reflect the events in the song, but that’s beside the point. The song steeps itself in the reverie of lost love, a melancholy almost anyone can relate to.

Number 107
Was where you lived back then
I used to see you tripping ‘round the town
After you moved in with him
Later, when it all fell through
You got a flat just up the street …

The video for the single, created by artists Jubal and Nathan Brown, collages live performance, grainy 16mm film footage that returns to the scene of the crime, and atmospheric found footage to create a suitable dreamscape for Concord Avenue’s nocturnal perambulations. Torontonians will recognize many West End landmarks, including The Royal Theatre, Café Diplomatico, and, of course, Concord Avenue.

The nucleus of Original Pairs is the longstanding romance between founding members guitarist Andrew Frontini and drummer Lisa Logan. The duo shared a love of rock ‘n’ roll and, particularly, a love of the Toronto indie scene, which they eventually channeled into their own music project.

After gigging for a year as a piano-and-drums duo, the group evolved into a trio (with a revolving cast of bass players) before expanding and solidifying into today’s classic four-piece combo. Let’s face it, playing in a band with a couple can really suck but ,thankfully, the chemistry of the current lineup is uniquely resilient. Bassist Lynda Kraar is an old family friend on the Logan side, and classically trained keyboardist Jon Loewen is Andrew’s partner by day in an architecture firm. The band can’t break up, so they’ve been able to mine a deep rock’n’roll groove.

Their new album Long Play (nicknamed OPLP by the band) reflects Andrew’s experiences growing up in the burgeoning Kingston rock scene of the early eighties, a time when ’60s rock and rockabilly influences were reviving, and punk was morphing into New Wave and post punk. OPLP was recorded live off the floor at Lincoln County Social Club in a period of four days, capturing the band’s onstage energy and the spirit of rock’s greatest years: 1965 and 1980.

Thematically, the album captures a couple’s life together from their earliest encounters in a West End apartment on “Concord Avenue,” to the inevitable bumps in the road on “Love Collision,” to the dreaded prospect of lovers growing old together in “Not Grow Old,” the album’s first single.

Shannon Thunderbird Sings Her Truth In New “Lost and Found” Video With Sultans Of String

0

‘Lost and Found’ is the new video off the album Walking Through the Fire by Sultans of String. Ts’msyen Elder Shannon Thunderbird wrote and sings the song. She is originally from the Pacific Northwest coast of British Columbia: Gilut’sau Band of the Royal House of Niis’gumiik, Gispudwada (Orca) Clan. The music is arranged and supported by Sultans of String, and the epic strings of the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

“On May 27, 2021, the bones of 215 Indigenous children were found in a mass grave on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops, BC” says Shannon. “I wrote ‘Lost and Found’ several days later to acknowledge the fact that with tangible evidence Canadians could no longer deny what we have been saying for over a century”

The wind raced through the trees,
Dying children on their knees
Where have you gone, I love you,
Please come home to me.

“I wrote the song on June the 11th, 2020.” Shannon continues. “By this time, the news had gone across Canada about the finding of the bones of our children from residential school horrors. And the first ones were from a residential school in Kamloops.

Growing up, music came to Shannon naturally: “I came out of the womb singing. My mother was an opera singer, and because she was Ts’msyen she was never really able to realise it, because we were talking about colonialist British Columbia. To have somebody in the grand arts who was an Indigenous person was just unheard of, so I was very fortunate. She had the most glorious voice, and I inherited part of it, and she instilled the love of music and singing in me.

“I am a songwriter, and this one came so fast that I just got up, I grabbed my phone, I threw it on record. And I sat on the side of the bed and I sang it from beginning to end without stopping. And by this time, I barely got through it. I was in a lot of tears thinking about my grandmother, thinking about my mother, thinking about what happened to me. All of these things that came out of this horror that was done by the churches and the Canadian government.

Thousands of children’s bones in the ground
Deep reaching pain for so many
Lost to the ravages of evil
Cries unheard for years and years

“I find it immensely difficult sometimes to sing it because I am, along with my sister Kate, who sings the song with me on the album, an intergenerational residential school survivor. It came down through my grandmother to my mother, to me, and we’ve had our challenges. But I’m of an age now where one has a choice. You carry on or you don’t. What would our ancestors want us to do?

Apologies won’t save the day
Death of babies far outweigh
Pale words that came a hundred years far too late

And a small voice whispered
It’s okay now, you found us, you found us

“It is brutal, and it’s real. And the sacrifice of these children, oh goodness. They won’t be forgotten. They can’t be. Innocents lost in the most heinous of ways.”

Lee Miller Matsos’ Musical Metamorphosis Continues with Latest Single ‘Mother’s Day Weekend’ And Announces Tour Dates

0

Metamorphosis can be defined as a change in physical or structural form, and perhaps nobody knows more about change than Lee Miller Matsos. His musical journey began as a teenager, after seeing Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr., leading to a life of opera and musical theatre. Until, that is, he decided to metamorphosize into a pop rock artist by enrolling at Holland College in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in 2019. While in PEI, he wrote most of the songs for his debut EP, and on September 8, 2023, the “Metamorphosis” had begun, and continuing with the release of his 4th single, Mother’s Day Weekend”, from the upcoming EP, “Metamorphosis, Pt. 2”.

“I wrote “Mother’s Day Weekend” on a chilly, rainy, and eerily calm Saturday in May 2020 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island,” Matsos explains. “I had had 3 head injuries in the past 14 months, and I had managed to finish my first year of school at Holland College School of Performing Arts a few weeks before. This time of solitude and Covid upheaval was the incubator for the biggest creative outburst of my life, including this song.”

“My mother was a deep, inspirational, and poignantly beautiful soul,” says Matsos, about the inspiration for his latest single. “I felt her presence close when this song arose. I still feel her presence, especially in times when I need her encouragement. It is nice to know that something about the soul is inexplicably timeless.”

“Mother’s Day Weekend” will be the first single released from the “Metamorphosis, Pt. 2” EP dropping on September 6, 2024. Joining Matsos (vocals/keyboard) are Tyler Ray on guitar, Chris DiCola on bass and Sam Merendino on drums.

Lee Miller Matsos’ lyrics highlight his evolution from “grief, pain and brokenness to hope healing and restoration.” The ultimate “Metamorphosis”.
