Declan McKenna Announces Third Studio Album, What Happened To The Beach? Out February 9th

0

Today, Declan McKenna announces that he will release What Happened To The Beach? on February 9th on his own label, Tomplicated Records. “In the past few years there has been a bit of weight behind making music,” he says. “Opening up and embracing the simple things in life has helped me make something that is more authentically me than ever before.” What Happened To The Beach? is available to pre-order on all format here. Declan McKenna will kick off leg three of his 56-date US tour on September 27th in New Haven, CT. You can pre-save here.

McKenna landed in California last year to work with producer Gianluca Buccellati, whose previous projects include Arlo Parks and Lana Del Rey. On his third studio album, McKenna taught and trusted himself to take his time and let the listener soak in the ambience. The result, What Happened To The Beach?, is an album that revels in both space and atmosphere. “The songs sound a lot like the music I listen to,” McKenna says about the new tunes, citing St Vincent (“She takes the guitar to a really cool place. Everything can be manipulated”) and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s hypnotic and spacey energy as influences.

McKenna also debuts his new single “Nothing Works”, which follows McKenna’s latest song “Sympathy.” “‘Nothing Works’ came out of the frustration of feeling boxed in and tied to expectation,” McKenna reveals. “It is a euphoric tune, at its core it’s a celebration of being true to yourself. In the track, I’m kind of mocking the idea that I’d just take advice that neglects my own intuition, and I often feel like nothing works when you’re trying to match norms or expectations, because you can never please everyone, but if you trust your gut and your own motivations in any aspect of life, the parameters for feeling good in yourself are much simpler and more powerful.”

What Happened To The Beach? is an album full of tone and colour. There is an undeniably buoyant energy across the album, at once best exemplified by “Nothing Works” frustrations of record label interference and criticism. Musically, you feel the freedom in the sound of a songwriter enjoying himself. “I wanted to open up and not worry about things so much,” McKenna says, “I was putting a lot of pressure on myself in the past when I just needed to drop the intensity a bit and have some fun.”

McKenna is in his early 20s and is pproaching a new era in his journey as a songwriter. He is aware that writing a more personal album, particularly one that focuses on joy over disaster, might suggest a line draw in the sand between Declan and Declan 2.0. “If every song features a lyrical statement then it loses some of its impact, too. I haven’t let go of that aspect of myself but I don’t want to live out that style forever.”

Recently McKenna, wrapped up his seond leg of his US tour and shared his first single from this record, “Sympathy” which Paste says “carries a similarly boisterous indie-pop melody as his previous work and has chiming ogans, jumpy piano chords and an overall shimmer to it.” Following an early evening slot on the main stage of the Reading and Leeds Festival behind Billie Eilish, Declan McKenna is redy for the next step. McKenna has always been a smart, literate songwriter. With What Happened To The Beach? he’s still all those things – he’s just down for a good time.

Chin Injeti Takes You on a Sentimental Journey with ‘For Better Or For Worse’ ft. Shad K

0

Chin Injeti adds a nostalgic offering to his 2023 repertoire with this new song “For Better Or For Worse” featuring Shad K aka YBTB. They say sentimentality is a hell of a drug, and in this new release, it keeps getting better with every listen.

The Grammy and JUNO Award album-winning contributor assembled an anthem that bodes well for adults learning to live with growth. Injeti admits his motivation for the song is “Growing up and accepting the things that go with it,” and continues, “the fact that we changed, and we’re ok with it.”

“For Better Or Worse” harnesses acoustic components from start to finish that sound familiar to the ear. Together with the almost faint repetitive thudding hiding behind the acoustics. It all works and complements Injeti’s style of singing throughout the song. What came as a surprise was the electronic element of the song, as it didn’t overpower the whole musical production.

Chin Injeti is truly a leader and a dynamo in his own right with this relatable contribution that will touch those who fall into the 20s-30s age groups. “Life never works out the way you planned,” Injeti shares, “and you are not the same person you were when you were in your 20s or 30s.” The mastery in the approach to balancing the lyrics and instrumentals is distinctive and makes one wonder what the Chin and Shad together can’t ace.

Apart from the unique musical arrangement and production, it’s the meaning behind the words that will win over the listener. “For Better Or For Worse” embraces life’s imperfections and lessons. And in return, accepting that “we’re okay with who we are as grown-ups.”

Injeti sings, “Now that I’m safely in my 40s/Guess I should process some of my 20s/
Some of the grief and the sh*t”/Like when I realized I’m not
The human being that I thought”

In “For Better Or For Worse” Chin has crafted a timeless mantra that sits well alongside his prior releases “Expensive” and “Something Love Would Do”.

“The song came from two people that are in a place in their lives, where they are completely comfortable with the life they lead,” he says.

“Looking back at the song now it is the perfect message for who we are and for probably who we’re going to be moving forward.”

“For Or Better Or Worse” is available now.

Double MusicNL Nominee Bill Brennan Releases “Nostalgie” and “Istana” from Album Kaleidoscope – Music for Mallet Instruments

0

Renowned pianist, percussionist, composer, and producer Bill Brennan is set to mesmerize music enthusiasts once again with the release of two compelling singles, “Nostalgie” and “Istana,” from his upcoming album “Kaleidoscope – Music for Mallet Instruments.” The album showcases Brennan’s virtuosity as a performer and his artistic prowess as a composer, blending a diverse array of influences into a sonic tapestry that’s both captivating and evocative.

Originally composed for piano and adapted for mallet instruments, “Nostalgie” reflects Brennan’s journey into solitude and self-discovery. While living alone in Toronto, Brennan’s compositions from that period, including “Nostalgie,” emerged from the space and time he found for introspection. The piece captures the essence of “saudade,” a Portuguese word embodying nostalgic melancholy and longing for something deeply cherished. Brennan’s melodic ingenuity and emotional depth shine through in “Nostalgie,” inviting listeners to explore their own feelings of nostalgia.

“Istana,” meaning “palace” in Indonesian, transports listeners into grandeur and enigma. Initially written for the instruments of the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan, Brennan’s composition delves into intricate rhythms and captivating melodies. The piece was inspired by the futuristic surgical techniques depicted in a CBC Nature of Things documentary, reflecting the fusion of Brennan’s experiences in Indonesian music and his creative brilliance. “Istana” captivates with its stark beauty and evocative soundscapes, bridging the Celtic and palatial realms.

Bill Brennan’s forthcoming album “Kaleidoscope – Music for Mallet Instruments” is a testament to his multifaceted artistry. Drawing inspiration from various musical traditions, Brennan’s compositions weave together the rich textures of mallet instruments, primarily the marimba and vibraphone. With influences ranging from Ghana to Brazil, Indonesia to India, and his beloved Newfoundland and Labrador, Brennan’s work resonates with layers of intricate patterns and melodic complexity. The album reflects his continuous exploration of rhythmic diversity, harmonic elegance, and bold musical expression.

Bill Brennan is an accomplished pianist, percussionist, composer, and producer with a diverse musical background spanning over 35 years. He has performed across North America and worldwide, collaborating with various artists and organizations in the music industry. Brennan’s unique blend of contemporary new music, jazz, and cross-cultural influences has earned him recognition for his exceptional artistry.

Both singles, “Nostalgie” and “Istana,” will be released on September 10, inviting listeners to experience the depth and breadth of Bill Brennan’s musical creativity. “Kaleidoscope – Music for Mallet Instruments” offers an immersive journey into Brennan’s unique sonic world. With a career spanning over three decades, including over 130 album credits, Bill Brennan’s contribution to contemporary classical, jazz, folk, and world music continues to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.

10 Reasons Why Every Musician On Instagram Should Be Active On Threads

0

Threads is a messaging app developed by Instagram that offers a more private and focused way to communicate with your followers and close friends. While not every musician may need to be active on Threads, there are several compelling reasons why it can be a valuable tool for those looking to engage with their audience and build a stronger online presence.

I know, I know, it’s not as active or in the news when it first started, but stick it out. I have a feeling when they start adding in more things you can do, it’ll grow.

Here are 10 reasons why every musician on Instagram should consider being active on Threads:

Direct Fan Engagement: Threads allows you to have more direct and personal conversations with your fans. You can respond to their messages, answer questions, and engage in real-time chats, making your fans feel heard and valued.

Close Friends List: You can create a “Close Friends” list on Threads, which is perfect for sharing exclusive content, updates, and behind-the-scenes glimpses with your most dedicated supporters.

Increased Privacy: Threads offers enhanced privacy settings, allowing you to control who can send you messages and see your activity. This can be especially useful for maintaining a secure and controlled online presence.

Story Sharing: You can easily share your Instagram Stories directly to Threads, which can help you reach your audience across both platforms simultaneously.

Focus on Core Audience: Threads helps you focus on your core audience and engage with those who are genuinely interested in your music. This can lead to more meaningful interactions and support.

Share Music and Videos: You can share music clips, videos, and other multimedia content directly through Threads, making it a convenient platform for showcasing your work.

Announcements and Updates: Use Threads to make important announcements, share updates about upcoming shows, releases, or collaborations with your most loyal followers.

Networking: Connect with other musicians, industry professionals, and collaborators within Threads. It’s a great place to network and discuss potential collaborations or opportunities.

Collect Feedback: Threads can serve as a valuable feedback tool. You can ask your fans for their opinions on your music, artwork, or promotional strategies and get direct responses.

Build Community: Threads can help you foster a sense of community among your fans. You can create group chats for discussions, fan meetups, or even virtual concerts, bringing your audience closer together.

Remember that not all musicians may find Threads to be essential, as it largely depends on your goals and how you prefer to engage with your audience. However, for those looking to establish a more personal and direct connection with their fans while maintaining privacy and control, Threads can be a valuable addition to their social media toolkit.

Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame To Break Ground This October On Major Expansion Project

0

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced today that it will break ground next month on a 50,000 square-foot expansion project, which will allow the Museum to better serve its next 14 million visitors from across the country and around the world. Designed by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), the expansion will integrate the iconic original building designed by I.M. Pei with the urban Cleveland lakefront, while increasing the size of the Museum by one third. With $135 million raised towards the capital campaign, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will begin construction this Fall.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame addition, designed by PAU under the leadership of Vishaan Chakrabarti, takes cues from the visual language of Pei’s original 1995 signature glass pyramid while preserving its distinct identity as a Cleveland landmark and activating the surrounding streetscape and lakefront. The expansion will feature a new entry lobby and publicly accessible space; exhibition spaces, offices, state-of-the-art education center and a 6,000+-square-foot multipurpose venue.

“The renowned architecture of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is symbolic of the innovation and creativity of generations of music icons,” said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum President & CEO, Greg Harris. “30 years after we broke ground on the original structure we embark on this next chapter in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s legacy, including expanding the museum’s world-class education and exhibition offerings, and we are thrilled to partner with the architectural and design visionaries at PAU, including Vishaan Chakrabarti.”

“This transformation will expand the Rock Hall’s iconic structure to meet the demands of its evolving mandate: to showcase the past, present and future of rock & roll as the defining sound of each generation’s youth,” said Chakrabarti, Founder and Creative Director of PAU. “Our design welcomes visitors by pulling the forces of the City, the Lake, and Pei’s Pyramid together into a new triangular composition that centers on a dynamic, aural, and inclusive public interior that flows from the streets to the waterfront—a destination that declares this must be the place.”

PAU’s design reinterprets Pei’s organization of solid shapes “dancing” around a central transparent pyramid. A triangular-shaped building interlocks with and extends outward from the original glass structure. Specific programmatic elements are articulated as solid shapes asymmetrically arranged under a tilted triangular roof. Clad in black steel and specular granite, the façade evokes Cleveland’s industrial past while representing a contemporary counterpoint to Pei’s design.

The addition sets a new tone for the visitor experience while responding functionally, operationally, and aesthetically to the existing pyramid. Where the two structures converge, a large publicly accessible interior atrium welcomes visitors, drawing in passersby with circulation pathways that connect the street to an exterior lake promenade. In addition to functioning as an urban pedestrian link, the new venue and exhibition spaces provide greatly increased flexibility to allow for larger exhibitions and events. By weaving indoor and outdoor public and programmatic spaces, PAU’s design transforms the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame into both a lively new cultural destination as well as a civic gathering space seamlessly integrated with the city.

Chilliwack’s BILL HENDERSON to Join Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

0

Award-winning producer, lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of one of Canada’s top recording supergroups in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Chilliwack, Bill Henderson is one of the Canadian music industry’s most respected leaders, on stage and off. From the early days of The Collectors, Vancouver’s first-high profile rock band, to the evolution of Chilliwack, becoming a solo artist and coveted songwriter and record producer, Henderson’s career spanning more than 50 years is about to reach another milestone.

On Monday, June 26, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) will present Bill Henderson with his induction at the SOCAN Annual General Meeting in his hometown of Vancouver, BC. He will be recognized for his distinguished catalogue of hit songs across multiple genres from psychedelic rock, adult contemporary to pop rock, and for stage, television and film. With Chilliwack, he penned some of the band’s most successful songs with 14 albums under their belts, including Lonesome Mary, Fly at Night, I Believe, My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone) and Watcha Gonna Do.

“Bill Henderson is the reason why Chilliwack is one of Canada’s most enduring bands. He has been the constant driving force and the heart and soul of the group, through various incarnations; but it is his songwriting that has carried Chilliwack throughout the eras, taking their writing from on-stage jams to thoughtfully structured songs with great hooks, that brought critical and fan success over many decades,” says Stan Meissner, CSHF Board Chairman.

“It became clear to me that the quality of our songs was the most important aspect of our work. If we could come up with good stuff we could survive for a long time,” says Henderson. “I wrote songs every day for many years and it took a long time to learn how to do a decent job. But every once in a while “the muse” would give me one for free. I gave her all my time and she gave me some good ones.”

In 1966 Henderson joined as lead guitarist for The Collectors, previously known as The Classics, an established Vancouver band which played regularly on local TV’s “Let’s Go” and at local clubs including the strip club Torch Cabaret. The Collectors’ first charting single was 1967’s psychedelic, philosophical Looking at a Baby (written by Henderson with Howie Vickers). They were among the early Canadian acts to find success in the U.S., and even spent time in California, where Henderson would later draw inspiration to pen the 1976 hit song California Girl about his experiences working with California record companies.

By 1969-1970, The Collectors evolved into a new band name, Chilliwack, adding early members Ross Turney, Glenn Miller, and Claire Lawrence. Henderson became their principal songwriter, and garnered the group’s first Billboard charting single, Lonesome Mary, in 1972. In 1978 Henderson was nominated for his first JUNO Award along with Turney for producer on Chilliwack’s “Dreams, Dreams, Dreams” album, their first platinum album, among many to come.

During the formative years, members came and went, with notable additions being guitarist Howard Froese, bassist Ab Bryant, and multi-instrumentalist Brian “Too Loud” MacLeod – who would become Henderson’s frequent songwriting collaborator. The duo wrote the Top 10 hit My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone), and Whatcha Gonna Do (When I’m Gone) that yielded the Henderson-MacLeod duo the 1983 JUNO Award for Producer of the Year.

Chilliwack eventually called it quits after their last single (1983’s Don’t Stop) with 14 albums under their belts. Henderson would later embrace his acoustic side with fellow British Columbians Shari Ulrich and Roy Forbes to form the folk trio, UHF. Along the way he also became a coveted producer, working with The Nylons’ platinum JUNO-nominated “Happy Together” album, Long John Baldry, The Irish Rovers, The Good Brothers, and the band Toronto.

He has also been commissioned to compose songs and scores for theatre, television (as music director for Sesame Street Canada), and in film, winning a Genie Award for Best Original Song, When I Sing, for the 1989 Canadian movie “Bye Bye Blues.”

Recalling his longevity as a songwriter, Henderson has said: “Styles come and go through the years, but songwriting will never die. The urge to sing is deeper and more lasting than any style. So if you’re a songwriter, don’t worry, as long as you write songs that people like to sing, you’ll never be laid off.”

Outside of the music studio and stage, Henderson served as director for the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) from 1986 to 1992; and President of both the Songwriters Association of Canada and SOCAN. Henderson is a member of the Order of Canada as well as an inductee to the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame, and with Chilliwack, to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He has amassed an impressive 10 SOCAN Awards, culminating in the Special Achievement Award.

In 1997 Henderson began leading a renewed Chilliwack, and continues to tour.

The Inductees are April Wine, Chilliwack, Glass Tiger, Lee Aaron, Lighthouse, Loverboy, Max Webster, Michel Pagliaro, Platinum Blonde, PRISM, Rough Trade, The Parachute Club, and Trooper. Presented alongside official partners Anthem Entertainment and Live Nation, Canada’s Rock of Fame is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will feature a night of tributes, live performances, special guests and a reunion of Canadian DJ legends.

Canada’s Rock of Fame is the first of two induction ceremonies in 2023 as part of the organization’s milestone year events. The annual star-studded Canada’s Walk of Fame 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre will take place on December 2, 2023, honouring this year’s Inductees. A special broadcast will air at a later date on CTV.

The final Inductees for 2023 will be announced in the coming months, along with this year’s Allan Slaight Music Impact and the Community and National Hero Honourees.
