Vault Music Launches “Cassette Culture 3.0” With 50 Exclusive Live Albums From New York City’s Top Independent Musicians

0

Vault Music, the digital music format for limited-edition music, is proud to announce Cassette Culture 3.0, a web3 revival of the tradition of “cassette culture” on the company’s blockchain-based music format.

Traditionally, “cassette culture” refers to an international music scene that emerged in the postpunk period of the late 1970s through the 1990s. It involved amateur musicians, often recording at home on cassette tapes, creating non-mainstream or alternative music. These recordings were then duplicated on cassette in limited quantities and distributed freely or sold at low cost within the scene, differentiating this concept from the use of cassettes for illegal copies, mix tapes, bootlegs, or other common uses.

While cassette culture was culturally significant among musicians and music fans alike, most notably via the taping sections at Grateful Dead shows, it lacked the ability to create meaningful income for artists—until now.

By bringing cassette on-chain via the company’s blockchain-based music format, Vault Music is proud to launch Cassette Culture 3.0, a hybrid of cassette culture and web3 music.

With its unalterable and fully tradable digital format, Vault Music is the first company to create on-chain archives of live performances that reflect the current music culture in New York City. This fusion of old and new reinvents the way music enthusiasts consume and share music, providing a new way for the underground music scene to thrive.

“What we’ve built at Vault Music takes the taping movement and makes it above board and on chain,” said Nigel Eccles, CEO and co-founder of Vault Music. “I’ve always loved collecting music and the tradition of taping culture, but we wanted to bring it back to life with modern technology. By doing so, we’re not only preserving these performances in a non-degrading format, but we’re also giving independent musicians a new way to earn a viable living from their music.”

To date, Vault Music has captured 50 live concert performances from New York City’s iconic and underground venues, including Bowery Electric, The Bitter End, Baby’s All Right, Mercury Lounge, and many more. Each will be released as limited-edition live albums on the company’s blockchain-based music platform and mobile app, which is available on iOS and Android.

Vault Music’s platform and digital format empower artists to control the price and scarcity of their music. Unreleased music and live performances can be released as digital albums that can be bought and resold by fans.

More importantly, by preserving these performances as live albums on chain, artists can quickly and easily share live performance experiences with a larger fanbase, a major advantage for independent artists who are unable to tour extensively. And unlike vinyl and other physical formats, artists earn royalties every time an album is sold or resold on Vault Music, creating long-tail earning potential.

Built on the Solana blockchain, Vault Music uses its proprietary Vault Protocol, an open and fully decentralized standard for purchasing, playing, and sharing limited-edition music releases, to store and encrypt audio and visual media for each drop.

Each live performance can be purchased and played in high-quality audio along with rich-media extras such as concert videos, voice memos, backstage photos, and more. Each live album drop can be purchased via credit card, PayPal, Phantom wallet, or in-app purchase via Vault Music’s mobile app.

To date, Vault Music has recorded live performances from AKTHESAVIORJuniperMiddle PartAnna Shoemaker and more, including live drops from artists such as Kids That FlyTelescreensSUM SUNCharlotte Rose Benjamin, and D’Lourdes. In total, Vault Music has recorded over 50 live concerts in New York City, which will drop weekly.

Vault Music is not stopping with New York City, however. In the months ahead, the company will expand its Cassette Culture 3.0 initiative to Los AngelesNashvilleAustinAmsterdam, and London by the end of 2023, with a focus on spotlighting the top independent and underground musicians in each scene.

“Our objective is to create the definitive archive of the best live music experiences around the world,” says Eccles. “By making each album strictly limited edition, our inventory will truly serve as the ultimate inventory of collectible time capsules from the most vibrant underground music scenes.”

Toronto Indie Rock Band The Alter Kakers Celebrate Breakup Liberation in ‘When You’re Gone’

0

All things end. Some things must end.

Steve Bronstein of Toronto indie rock band The Alter Kakers wrote the group’s latest single, “When You’re Gone”, years ago near the close of a relationship. But unlike the more common musical theme in breakup songs, the singer isn’t sad about the conclusion – he relishes it.

“Instead of having a remorseful feeling about it, it takes a self-aware approach,” Bronstein explained. “Looking forward to the freedoms ahead.”

Incorporating clever wordplay and poignant truths, Bronstein brays over an upbeat but dirty instrumental, which includes drums, guitar, and even violin.

“When You’re Gone” has been a long time in the making. Bronstein originally wrote its lyrics about 30 years ago, then stashed them away. A decade ago, the bed tracks were recorded at Metalworks with the band’s original singer, Matt Dratva. Fast-forward to modern day, and The Alter Kakers decided to revisit the song and turn it into something complete.

As part of the transformation, the band realized it would be better suited to be played in a more acoustic manner. That led to more of a strumming approach, with drummer Dan Barsi playing a snappy snare beat to anchor it. The Alter Kakers recorded it in one take with everything live off the floor with no click.

“The vocal, especially in the beginning of the song, feels intimate, almost conversational,” the band said.

The violin solo – played by friend of the band Colin Maier of Quartetto Gelato – was overdubbed later.

“When You’re Gone” is the second song The Alter Kakers have published in the last eight weeks, following up the July release of “Stopped Being In Love.” Like their previous songs, “When You’re Gone” has an accompanying video, which the band shot and edited itself.

Scenes of the band performing “When You’re Gone” were captured at Underpass Park in Toronto’s Corktown district, fully immersed in the urban fabric of the city.

“(We went to Corktown) to take advantage of the graffiti as a backdrop and give the video a gritty vibe,” the band said. “We got lucky with some of the graffiti, especially the large spray painted word, ‘DENIAL,’ which seemed to fit perfectly with the subject of the song, and Steve sang a few verses in front of it to highlight it.”

As excited as The Alter Kakers are about their recorded music, they especially pride themselves on their live performances. Bronstein, Barsi, and bassist/vocalist Cary Corvair can be found around Toronto, entrancing crowds with original music and covers of greatest hits. Forever showmen, The Alter Kakers have taken venues like The Dakota Tavern by storm.

The band’s name is a testament to their stature and nature – alter kaker is a Yiddish term for an old person, or as the band likes to call it, “an old fart.” That level of self-awareness helps when creating a song like “When You’re Gone.”

Grammy-Winning ‘Slack Key’ Guitarist Jim ‘Kimo’ West Drops Enchanting Album “Of Wood and Spirit: American Guitar Stories”

0

Grammy-winning Hawaiian “slack key” guitarist, producer, and composer Jim “Kimo” West unveiled his latest album, “Of Wood and Spirit: American Guitar Stores,” on August 14, 2023. This release marks the beginning of a tour that will enchant audiences across the United States and Europe. It will also include a special benefit concert, “The Hana Sound Returns,” dedicated to supporting the people of Maui, featuring Leokane Pryor and CJ Helekahi.

Jim “Kimo” West’s journey into the enchanting world of “ki ho’alu” or Hawaiian “slack key” guitar began in Hana, Maui, in 1985. Here, he was introduced to the captivating sounds of Gabby Pahinui, Sons Of Hawaii, Sonny Chillingworth, and Atta Isaacs. These influences left an indelible mark on his musical soul, leading him to explore the rich tradition of alternate tunings and the soul-stirring melodies of slack key guitar.

Kimo’s reputation as one of the world’s preeminent slack key guitarists is evident in his music, which has garnered over seventy-five million spins on leading streaming platforms. He received a Grammy Award in 2021 for his album “More Guitar Stories” and a Grammy nomination in 2019 for “Moku Maluhia-Peaceful Island.” Additionally, Kimo is a four-time Na Hoku Hanohano (the Hawaiian ‘Grammy’) nominee and a two-time recipient of the LA Treasures Award for his unwavering commitment to preserving the acoustic guitar tradition.

“Of Wood and Spirit” takes listeners on a musical journey. Kimo’s innovative compositions and intricate fingerpicking style are showcased while staying true to the essence of slack key guitar. The album seamlessly weaves in influences from genres such as West African guitar, New Age, Classical, and Americana music. It serves as a testament to Kimo’s deep reverence for the American landscape and the spiritual energy unique to each location. The universal language of music connects them all.

Kimo’s “Of Wood and Spirit” tour celebrates music, culture, and the rich history of slack key guitar. Audiences can expect an immersive experience as Kimo shares the stage with some of the world’s finest slack key players and musicians.

As a sneak peek of the album, Kimo has released the single “Ghost Town Waltz.” Featuring a new video with  “crowdsourced” photos and video clips, woven together in a compelling montage by acclaimed video artist Doug Henry.

This hauntingly beautiful track invites listeners into an evocative soundscape where lingering melodies dance through the remnants of a deserted town.

Atlantic Celebrates 75th Anniversary With Year-Long Vinyl Campaign, Remixes, And Limited-Edition Merchandise Capsule

0

As part of Atlantic Records’ 75th Anniversary celebration, the label – in conjunction with Rhino Entertainment – has launched an extensive year-long vinyl series featuring 90 releases spanning the entire history of the company, from its earliest days until the present. The series encompasses iconic and acclaimed albums across virtually every popular musical genre, including special editions and many that have never been on vinyl. The unprecedented series has been curated by Atlantic Records Chairman & CEO Craig Kallman, who – in addition to his role as the label’s chief executive – is one of the world’s foremost audiophiles, with a personal vinyl collection now numbering over two million LPs.

Each month’s Atlantic 75 collection reflects the label’s diverse and rich history. With most titles pressed in crystal clear vinyl, releases included span groundbreaking works that underline the genre-defiant greatness of the label’s release over the years. In addition, Atlantic has partnered with noted audiophile label Acoustic Sounds for a multi-year-long slate of 180-Gram, 45RPM black vinyl, and SACD versions of classic Atlantic albums. The label has also partnered with beloved vinyl subscription service VMP (Vinyl Me, Please) for their first ever label collection for Record of the Month, which will be available for VMP members on Thursday, October 19, shipping early November. As part of the partnership, VMP will be releasing Ray Charles – Ray Charles In Person in the Essentials Track, The Mar-Keys / Booker T. & The M.G.’s – Back to Back in the Classics Track, Lupe Fiasco – Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor in the Hip-Hop Track, John Prine – Sweet Revenge in the Country Track, and Stone Temple Pilots – Nº 4 in the Rock Track.

“Our 75th anniversary has given us an incredible opportunity to revisit the amazing range and depth of the music that Atlantic has released across the decades,” said Craig Kallman. “These 90 albums are not only an extraordinary musical journey through the years, but a cultural one as well, reflecting a series of seismic social shifts. As an admitted vinyl junkie, I’m honored and thrilled to join with our colleagues at Rhino, our long-time friends at Acoustic Sounds, and the great folks at VMP to give all this brilliant music the royal LP treatment. It’s been a true labor of love, and the perfect celebration of this landmark anniversary.”

Kirk Pengilly of INXS shares his experience working with Atlantic Records: “In 1982, we signed to a newly revitalized ATCO label for North America under the Atlantic umbrella. They, along with our manager Chris Murphy, were trailblazers in a pretty stock standard record industry. They did things differently and thought outside the square with innovative, creative ideas. ATCO was our first signing outside of Australia and immediately showed their care and passion for us as an act. We were a ‘Band of Brothers’ and ATCO became part of our family. Exciting times for a bunch of guys out of Australia.”

As part of the ongoing series, Atlantic is pleased to announce the forthcoming releases of Led Zeppelin’s paradigm-shifting untitled fourth album, commonly referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, and Coldplay’s multi-platinum selling seventh album, A Head Full of Dreams. Led Zeppelin IV, produced by Jimmy Page, will be pressed on crystal-clear, 180g vinyl. The new edition of A Head Full of Dreams is pressed on 140g colored re-cycled vinyl and features a bonus track, “Something Just Like This,” by the Chainsmokers and Coldplay. The collection will also welcome albums from Jason Mraz, Christina Perri, Grouplove as well as seasonal releases from Booker T. and the MG’s and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. See below for the full list of releases dates.

Below is the complete list of the Atlantic 75 titles scheduled for the year, including already available titles. Titles from the collection are available to order at http://store.atlanticrecords.com. Fans visiting the store can also purchase limited-edition tees, hoodies, and color-changing magic candles featuring vintage Atlantic logo designs, as well as an exclusive t-shirt featuring Roberta Flack, which was released for the campaign in honor of the coinciding 50th anniversary of Killing Me Softly.

For the fans who prefer to listen to their music on the go, Atlantic has released a collection of remixes which demonstrates the influence that Atlantic’s iconic artists have had on musicians regardless of genre. Swiss-South African It-girl DJ Nora En Pure adds a new spin to Donna Lewis’ record-breaking “I Love You Always Forever.” DJ Spinna delivers a funky groove to Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly,” while producer Ben Lieband submits his own version of the iconic torch song. Italian DJ Luca Olivotto owns his fresh take on YES’ “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” which topped the Beatport House Charts earlier this spring. New Jersey enters the house with DJ Sliink’s flip of Gym Class Heroes’ “Cupid’s Chokehold.” Nomak revives a deep cut from Brandy with his take on “What About Us.” Listen to all the new Atlantic 75 remixes HERE.

New Order Announce Substance 1987 Collection For 2023

0

Today (13th September) New Order are delighted to announce a remastered set of formats of Substance 1987, released via Warner on 10th November. The 2023 collection will be available in 2LP, 2CD, 4CD deluxe edition, 2LP coloured vinyl and 2 cassettes. Also being made available are reissues of the 12” singles True Faith, True Faith Remix and Blue Monday 88.

Originally released via the legendary Factory Records, Substance compiled all of the band’s singles to that point in their 12” versions with many of their respective B-sides (on the CD and cassette versions), and specially new recorded versions of ‘Temptation’ and ‘Confusion’. The album also included the biggest selling 12” single of all time, Blue Monday, alongside other classic singles The Perfect Kiss, Bizarre Love Triangle and the band’s debut single release Ceremony.

The album is the band’s biggest selling to date, with over one million copies sold, going platinum in the US with a Top 5 hit in True Faith which was accompanied by the seminal video, directed by French choreographer Philippe Decouflé.

This new remastered collection includes double vinyl album, double CD with b-sides, double cassette and an expanded 4CD collection. The 4CD version includes the original 2CD set remastered with two additional CDs. CD3 expands the collection with alternate versions and extra b-sides. CD4 features an unreleased concert, Live from Irvine Meadows, California, 12th September 1987, where the band uniquely played the entire album in sequence.

Substance 1987 remaster will also be available on 2LP – blue/red colour vinyl (retail exclusive) and double cassette – (New Order Store exclusive).

From the ashes of legendary band Joy Division, New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time.

After Ian Curtis tragically took his own life, Bernard Sumner (keyboardist and guitarist), Peter Hook (bassist) and Stephen Morris (drummer) re-formed the same year as New Order, with the addition of Gillian Gilbert (keyboardist and guitarist) and Sumner taking over as vocalist.

Their debut Movement (1981) was over shadowed by the sound of Joy Division; going forward the band combined post-punk with influences from New York’s club scene, the result was Power, Corruption & Lies (1983). 1983 also saw the release of “Blue Monday” which became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, selling over 3 million copies worldwide.

New Order then released the albums Low-Life (1985), Brotherhood (1986), Substance (1987) and Technique (1989). Between several brief hiatuses and line-up alterations, Republic (1993), Get Ready (2001) and Waiting for the Sirens’ Call (2005) came out, before Peter Hook’s departure in 2007.

Phil Cunningham joined the band in 2001, followed by Tom Chapman as bass player in 2011.

The band released their critically acclaimed tenth studio album Music Complete in 2015 featuring guest vocals from Iggy Pop, Brandon Flowers and Elly Jackson of La Roux.

Never resting on their legacy, New Order continue to perform live around the world, playing some of the biggest shows of their career to date, headlining Manchester’s Heaton Park and London’s O2 in 2021 and a US arena tour with the Pet Shop Boys in Autumn 2022.

Declan McKenna Announces Third Studio Album, What Happened To The Beach? Out February 9th

0

Today, Declan McKenna announces that he will release What Happened To The Beach? on February 9th on his own label, Tomplicated Records. “In the past few years there has been a bit of weight behind making music,” he says. “Opening up and embracing the simple things in life has helped me make something that is more authentically me than ever before.” What Happened To The Beach? is available to pre-order on all format here. Declan McKenna will kick off leg three of his 56-date US tour on September 27th in New Haven, CT. You can pre-save here.

McKenna landed in California last year to work with producer Gianluca Buccellati, whose previous projects include Arlo Parks and Lana Del Rey. On his third studio album, McKenna taught and trusted himself to take his time and let the listener soak in the ambience. The result, What Happened To The Beach?, is an album that revels in both space and atmosphere. “The songs sound a lot like the music I listen to,” McKenna says about the new tunes, citing St Vincent (“She takes the guitar to a really cool place. Everything can be manipulated”) and Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s hypnotic and spacey energy as influences.

McKenna also debuts his new single “Nothing Works”, which follows McKenna’s latest song “Sympathy.” “‘Nothing Works’ came out of the frustration of feeling boxed in and tied to expectation,” McKenna reveals. “It is a euphoric tune, at its core it’s a celebration of being true to yourself. In the track, I’m kind of mocking the idea that I’d just take advice that neglects my own intuition, and I often feel like nothing works when you’re trying to match norms or expectations, because you can never please everyone, but if you trust your gut and your own motivations in any aspect of life, the parameters for feeling good in yourself are much simpler and more powerful.”

What Happened To The Beach? is an album full of tone and colour. There is an undeniably buoyant energy across the album, at once best exemplified by “Nothing Works” frustrations of record label interference and criticism. Musically, you feel the freedom in the sound of a songwriter enjoying himself. “I wanted to open up and not worry about things so much,” McKenna says, “I was putting a lot of pressure on myself in the past when I just needed to drop the intensity a bit and have some fun.”

McKenna is in his early 20s and is pproaching a new era in his journey as a songwriter. He is aware that writing a more personal album, particularly one that focuses on joy over disaster, might suggest a line draw in the sand between Declan and Declan 2.0. “If every song features a lyrical statement then it loses some of its impact, too. I haven’t let go of that aspect of myself but I don’t want to live out that style forever.”

Recently McKenna, wrapped up his seond leg of his US tour and shared his first single from this record, “Sympathy” which Paste says “carries a similarly boisterous indie-pop melody as his previous work and has chiming ogans, jumpy piano chords and an overall shimmer to it.” Following an early evening slot on the main stage of the Reading and Leeds Festival behind Billie Eilish, Declan McKenna is redy for the next step. McKenna has always been a smart, literate songwriter. With What Happened To The Beach? he’s still all those things – he’s just down for a good time.

Olivia Rodrigo Announces 2024 Guts World Tour

0

Today, multi-platinum, three-time Grammy award-winning artist Olivia Rodrigo announced her highly anticipated GUTS world tour in support of her second studio album, GUTS, which was released September 8 via Geffen Records to critical acclaim. Produced by Live Nation, the massive global 2024 tour kicks off its 57-date run on Friday, February 23 in Palm Springs, CA at Acrisure Arena, with stops across North America and Europe, including Miami, Toronto, New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and many more before wrapping up with back-to-back shows on Tuesday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 14 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The Breeders, PinkPantheress, Chappell Roan, and Remi Wolf will join on select dates across the tour.

Following the incredible success of her 2022 debut tour The SOUR Tour, the GUTS world tour will be Olivia’s first arena tour, taking her to iconic venues around the world including Madison Square Garden, Kia Forum, Sportpaleis, The O2 and more. During this run, she will be performing multiple nights in various cities, including two nights in New York, Los Angeles, and London.

One of the most highly awaited albums of the year, GUTS arrived as the follow-up to Rodrigo’s 4x Platinum 2021 full-length debut SOUR and features her No. 1 hit “vampire” and the new focus track “get him back!” Like “vampire,” GUTS’ second single “bad idea, right?” was named a Best New Track by Pitchfork, who hailed the latter as “one of the best pop performances of the year.” Released last month alongside its B-movie-inspired video, “bad idea right?” also drew raves from the likes of Rolling Stone (who called it a “sugary headbanger”) and the New York Times (who praised the track as a “bright, kaleidoscopic head-rush of a pop song…” in its weekly column “The Playlist”).
