Montreal’s Mercury Messiah Unleashes Raw Emotion in Latest Single ‘Stay’

Mercury Messiah, the dynamic rock duo from Montreal, Quebec, is returning to entertain audiences once again with “Stay,” their newly released single that will be featured on their upcoming EP “Blast Off” – available now!

Mercury Messiah is comprised of co-founder, lead guitarist and singer Emmanuel (Mano) Diles and classically and jazz-trained musician Alex Brunel. Stay takes a satirical look at a dark time in Mano’s life as it explores a man’s last dance with a woman, essentially a metaphor for the dance we know as life.

With this new single, the band adopted a more subdued tone, breaking away from their trademark hard rock vibe and demonstrating their ability to explore new sounds while keeping their style of progressive, metal, and hard rock. “Don’t get it twisted though, despite dialling things down to 10 from 11, Mercury Messiah is still a hard rock band at its core” Diles exclaims.

Mano and Alex Brunel (drums, piano, and composer), describe the making of Stay, “Our new song and EP is very special because this time around, we recorded, composed, mixed and produced everything by ourselves in our home studios and felt that we were more in control of our creative process.”

The “Blast Off” EP which is set to be released in early 2024, was mostly written by Mano and dates back nearly 10 years to when he wrote the songs between the ages of 14 to 17 from 2014 to 2017. However, because the group gave priority to songs from their first EP, the recording process took longer than expected.

After the success of their debut EP, “Starbound,” in 2022, the band decided at the last minute to divide their musical work into two separate EPs, even though it was originally meant to be a full-length album. However, they were still able to hone their sound and go further into the creative process thanks to this separation.

A blend of rock genres has defined Mercury Messiah’s journey, honouring their influences from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Their music, influenced by iconic bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, and The Beatles, has garnered attention for its diverse range and innovative approach. The group refuses to put themselves in a creative box, with their ability to make music spanning a variety of musical genres, including jazz, blues, reggae, psychedelic rock, flamenco, progressive rock, metal, pop rock, hard rock, instrumental fusion, and more.

April Wine’s Myles Goodwyn’s Family Releases Statement

Our family would like to thank everyone for the beautiful tributes and messages of support and love at this difficult time. Myles journeyed to the stars peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind his wife Kim Goodwyn, his children Amber and Aaron from his first marriage to Phyllis Pascas, and son Cary from his second marriage to Lisa Blond. For those seeking to honour his memory, the family suggests that donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: jdrf.ca

Myles Goodwyn, singer, guitarist, writer, producer and leader of the multi-Platinum selling rock band April Wine, who shaped and directed the group from its earliest beginnings, has died today at the age of 75 at Noon Atlantic Time. No further details on cause of death, location or funeral details will be disclosed at this time. The family asks for privacy.

Originally from Woodstock, N.B., Goodwyn formed April Wine in 1969 alongside brothers Ritchie and David Henman, and cousin Jim Henman. The band’s hits included “Just Between You and Me,” “Sign of the Gypsy Queen,” and “Roller.” April Wine would later become a multi-platinum selling group, with over 10 million record sales. The group’s album “The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy” was the first Canadian album to sell over 100,000 copies.

Goodwyn’s voice is as distinctive and immediately recognizable as his song writing skills are prolific. Goodwyn and the other members of April Wine were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 2010 and Canada’s Walk Of Fame in 2023. Goodwyn was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Goodwyn received the prestigious East Coast Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2002. In 2016 he released his memoir named, Just Between You and Me, which became an instant best seller on the Globe and Mail`s Non-Fiction List. His second book, Elvis and Tiger (fiction) was published in 2018 and was also very well received.

The Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues recording released in 2018, it earned international acclaim and a JUNO nomination for Blues Recording of the Year in 2019. The recording won the ECMA award for Blues Recording of the Year in 2019. His follow up blues recording that year, Myles Goodwyn and Friends of the Blues 2, won the same blues category in 2020.

Goodwyn left the group for live performances earlier this year, and continued to perform live with his acoustic trio which includes Goodwyn, Jim Henman and Bruce Dixon until recently.

Miramichi’s Inspiring Robbie Tucker Defies Parkinson’s, Releases Captivating Fourth Album ‘WTF Is Happiness?’

Musician Robbie Tucker genuinely loves making music and doesn’t let Parkinson’s disease get in the way. After all, he’s been at it since he was eight years old and he got his first acoustic guitar for his birthday. Celebrating his fourth album release in less than a year with WTF Is Happiness?, Tucker is eager to get as much music out as possible.

“I’m extremely proud of it,” he says. “I hope your ears discover happiness, anger, sadness, humour or some other human emotion that ultimately connects us all.”

The album, “WTF Is Happiness?” includes new time signatures Tucker hasn’t used before. The experiment proves to be a success¬—“Die Diana Please” (in 6/8 time) and “Relax Now (It’ll Be Okay)” (in 5/4 time) are both catchy earworms.

Tucker doesn’t shy away from sharing some of his most vulnerable work. For the album, he pulled out a song he’d written almost 30 years ago. Originally titled “Nameless,” the song is about a boy he fell in love with in high school.

“I decided to dissect the lyrics and create an epic two-part song, an idea I completely fell in love with,” he says. Listeners will hear “Two Boys I” on this album. “Two Boys II” will be on a future release.

Tucker isn’t afraid to let listeners know how his life can be dark at times. In the album, he opens up about how he’s feeling nearly 20 years after his Parkinson’s diagnosis: isolated, alone, and feeling completely defeated and disabled at times.

Tucker, who is from Miramichi, New Brunswick, is inspired by musical greats like Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, and Elvis. These influences shine through in his playful, creative pop-folk with an occasional surprise thrown in.

Tucker’s determination, passion, and drive, combined with his lifelong love of music make his latest album a memorable one.

Francine Honey Liftoffs On New Album ‘Rockets In My Boots, Volume 1’

Don’t get her wrong– Francine Honey is just as sweet as her name implies. But on her latest record Rockets In My Boots, Volume 1, she’s frisky, risky, and ready to shoot whiskey, and the album is out now.

Building on recent career momentum, Rockets In My Boots, Volume is Honey’s most daring record yet. The past two years have brought her significant peer recognition– She won the 2022 Buddy Holly Educational Fund Scholarship Award and was named the Austin Songwriter Group International’s 2023 Songwriter of the Year. Honey has established herself as a seasoned songwriter, known for her transformative company theme-song writing workshops and proven ability to create custom and personalized songs. Now, in her triumphant return from 2021’s I Carry On …, Francine Honey is sharing her own story on Rockets In My Boots, Volume I, making it a natural testament to how empowered women know how to keep getting back up.

Because Honey knows a thing or two about coming back swinging. She was born the daughter of small-town Tweed, Ontario’s beloved local barber, a legacy she pays tribute to on track four, “Come Sit In My Chair”. Though she always had a passion for songwriting, she initially took a more linear path in life, getting her university degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and working in that sector for several years.

Tragedy struck when her then-husband fell into a deep struggle with mental illness, and Honey was forced to re-locate and start her life over again. Though her music had seemingly taken a backseat, she never stopped writing songs, even through her toughest days.

In 2013, she made the bold decision to leave her full-time job to pursue her music. She earned a songwriting certificate at Berklee and cut her teeth studying alongside seasoned pros in Nashville. Her first album Re-Drawn was released in 2014, followed by her first full-length album to be continued… in 2018. To be continued… captured her six-day collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Neilson Hubbard, recording live-off-the-floor in Nashville collaboration with Grammy-nominated Hubbard has continued with the release of her top 50 Rolling Stone Magazine Christmas album Take Me to the North Pole in 2019 and I Carry On in 2021. Not to mention the numerous stunning and fun music videos that her and Hubbard have released.

Again collaborating with Hubbard on Rockets In My Boots, Volume I, Honey describes herself on lead single “Cadillac” as “a pinch of sass, but all class” and proves that she can hold her own against a mean twangy guitar. On fiery “Better Think Again,” the record’s forthcoming single, she warns–

My Next Read: “Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon” By Joel Selvin

Just about a month ago it was announced that Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon by Joel Selvin would be published by Diversion Books on February 27. In the weeks that followed, a number of advance reading copies of the book found their way to some notable recipients who had expressed interest in reading it. As the countdown to February 27 continues we share some of their comments.

Mark Lindsay, frontperson for Paul Revere & the Raiders and host of Mark Lindsay’s American Revolution heard on SiriusXM’s Little Steven’s Underground Garage channel wrote, “Jim was always soft-spoken, and the first one to arrive at a session. His drums spoke for him, and he had a subtle but commanding presence. Years later, when he was scheduled for a session where I was producing a commercial, he arrived 45 minutes late, was surly, and uninvolved. Someone else had taken over the Jim we knew and loved, and that was the last time I saw him. Based upon my interactions with Jim Gordon, author Joel Selvin accurately portrays Jim’s genius as well as his devolvement into the living hell he gradually occupied.”

Amir “Questlove” Thompson offered, “Jim Gordon is one of the most important drummers in American rock history — he kept the beat for everyone from Buffalo Springfield to the Beach Boys to Jackson Browne to John Denver to Randy Newman. He is also a tragic figure, a man whose mental illness and substance abuse sent him spiraling into tragedy. Joel Selvin’s biography, both painstaking and painful, brings Gordon’s darkness into the light.”

The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart commented, “Jim was one of the rare players who danced on the edge and knew the secrets. When you play with rhythms like hot coals, they will burn you. Deep drumming is different than just playing drums. Yes, Jim was healing himself when he drummed but when he stopped the voices started again no doubt. Drums can talk to you in voices known and unknown. I finished this book and stared slack-jawed out at space trying to come to grips with this amazing, tragic story.”

Pete Thomas, drummer for Elvis Costello & the Attractions, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his bandmates, wrote, “Joel’s book is a fascinating, well-written period piece describing the L.A. session scene in the ‘70s. When you play the drums ‘Jim Gordon’ is a place you can go. Like Charlie, Levon or Ringo, he invented his own style of playing rock. Up on the beat but then laying it back just a hair for the second verse. He made records sound both attractive and beautiful. He made hits!! Most drummers have gone a bit off the rails at some point in their careers but sadly things went very wrong for Jim. Joel describes this aspect of Jim’s life in a very thoughtful and sympathetic way.”

Producer/arranger/solo artist Van Dyke Parks notes that Jim Gordon played on his very first Warner Bros. single back in 1967 and commented, “Joel Selvin maintains a vise-like grip on decades of the music biz of the Counter-Culture that brings background musicians to the front-page, above the fold. Drums & Demons covers Gordon’s ascent as first-call studio musician status—to his tragic incarceration at Vacaville, from his delusional downfall into a psychotic, murderous collapse. I loved Jim like a brother, and am grateful for Selvin’s unstinting notice of Gordon’s luminescence. That adds great leavening to this heartbreaking work of staggering genius.”

Selvin’s riveting narrative follows the man who many consider the greatest rock drummer of all time, from his humble beginnings as a teenage touring musician, to his many landmark accomplishments in the studio and on the road, through his downward spiral into mental illness, matricide and incarceration. With the cooperation of the late rock legend’s family, and based on his trademark extensive, detailed research, Selvin uncovers one of the darkest stories in popular music, further cementing his reputation as a master of rock noir.

The subject of Joel Selvin’s latest book was raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and got his start as a professional drummer touring with the Everly Brothers in the mid-1960s. Jim Gordon’s penchant for creative and astonishingly accurate musicianship earned him regular session work, joining the community retroactively referred to as The Wrecking Crew. His preternatural intuition and perfect sense of time can be heard on more than 30 Top 10 singles including several #1 hits, such as the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher (he also supplied the literal beat for “The Beat Goes On” by the latter). He has been immortalized on albums by George Harrison, John Lennon and the Byrds, among dozens of other household name music acts. Gordon was notably the drummer for Derek and the Dominos and provided the piano coda for their evergreen anthem “Layla.” Joel Selvin details how Gordon didn’t merely keep time, but he was also instrumental in shaping compositions; whether it was his Latin-influenced rhythms on “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” by Steely Dan or his monumental drum break on the Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache” (a staple of hip-hop from the genre’s inception, having been sampled on over 750 other records), he wasn’t just a player on hits, he made them hits.
