Ed Sheeran To Release His New Album ‘Autumn Variations’ On September 29 And Produced By Aaron Dessner

0

Exciting news for Ed Sheeran and The National fans as Ed unveils his highly anticipated album, ‘Autumn Variations,’ scheduled for release on September 29. Adding to the anticipation is the album’s production, skillfully helmed by Aaron Dessner, of The National. As the release date approaches, this promises to be an album that resonates deeply with the autumn season’s introspective vibes.

“Last autumn, I found that my friends and I were going through so many life changes. After the heat of the summer, everything either calmed, settled, fell apart, came to a head or imploded,” says Ed Sheeran.

“When I went through a difficult time at the start of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was going on, and when I learned about my friend’s different situations, I wrote songs, some from their perspectives, some from mine, to capture how they and I viewed the world at that time. There were highs of falling in love and new friendships among lows of heartbreak, depression, loneliness and confusion.”

“My dad and brother told me about a composer called Elgar, who composed ‘Enigma Variations’, where each of the 14 compositions were about a different one of his friends. This is what inspired me to make this album. When I recorded Subtract with Aaron Dessner, we clicked immediately. We wrote and recorded non-stop and this album was born out of that partnership. I feel he has captured the feeling of autumn so wonderfully in his sonics and I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.”

Autumn Variations will be released on  September 29,  2023 through Gingerbread Man Records.

5x Grammy winner and one of the most notable hip hop, R&B, and fashion/style icons of all time, Ms. Lauryn Hill, has announced The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th AnniversaryTour to commemorate her massively influential 1998 debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill an album that was released 25 years a go to the day this coming Friday. MLH will be performing the album, revisiting the musical sentiment and nostalgia that caused it to resonate with so many fans. The 17 date tour will hit arenas around the world, including Brooklyn’s Barclays, Chicago’s United Center, The Kia Forum in Los Angeles as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and more (full dates below). The Fugees will reunite for their first tour in years to co-headline the tour on all US and Canadian dates. Ms. Hill explains her thoughts on the album and it’s lasting impact:

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator. I wrote love songs and protest songs— (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.” She continues “I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity and LOVE leading the way.”

Over the past few months, Ms. Lauryn Hill has been seen in dazzling looks while making select appearances at events across the country in celebration of the anniversary year of the album. Wearing a bright pink blazer, Hill made a surprise appearance at Hip-Hop 50th Anniversary in New York City, performing a medley of her and Fugees’ hits with legendary collaborator Nas. In June, Hill headlined the Roots Picnic festival, reuniting with the Fugees for the firsr time since 2021. The impact that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had on music, fashion, and American and world culture is immeasurable and continues to influence the world’s biggest artists. Entered into the Library of Congress in 2015, Ms. Hill and her Diamond-certified album achieved numerous firsts including being the first ever Hip Hop album to receive an Album Of The Year Grammy Award, being the first woman to be nominated for 10 Grammy awards in one year and being the first woman to win 5 Grammys in one night.

Ringo Starr Announces New EP “Rewind Forward”

0

Today Ringo Starr announced details for his 4th EP, Rewind Forward, ahead of its release on October 13, 2023 on digital, cassette, CD, and 10” vinyl. The title track will be available to stream or purchase everywhere this Friday August 25, 2023 HERE.

The EP features 4 new songs, Shadows On The Wall, Feeling The Sunlight, Rewind Forward, and Miss Jean.

“Rewind Forward was something I said out of the blue – it’s just one of those lines like a Hard Days Night. It just came to me. But it doesn’t really make sense,” Ringo said with a laugh about the title. “I was trying to explain it to myself and the best I can tell you about what it means is: sometimes when you want to go forward you have to go back first.”

“Rewind Forward” was written with his engineer and oft co-writer Bruce Sugar. “We’ve been writing a song now for every EP,” said Ringo. The other tracks find Starr collaborating with old and new friends – including longtime All Starr Steve Lukather and his Toto bandmate Joe Williams who wrote the opening track “Shadows on the Wall;” Paul McCartney, who wrote “Feeling the Sunlight;” and for the final track, “Miss Jean,” Heartbreaker’s Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell, who wrote the song and who also enlisted Ian Hunter, a former All Starr. In addition the EP features contributions from Joe Walsh, Steve Dudas, Lance Morrison, as well as Matt Bissonnette, Torrance Klein, Weston Wilson, Kip Lennon, Marky Lennon.

All songs were recorded at Ringo’s home studio in Los Angeles (except for “Feeling the Sunlight” which was largely recorded in the UK).

Ringo and his All Starr band will begin their Fall tour on September 17, 2023 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA playing shows in the Southwest, Midwest and Southeast before ending on October 13, 2023 in Thackerville, OK.

2023 has already seen Ringo and his All Starr Band complete a Spring tour. Ringo recently celebrated his birthday on July 7 with his annual Peace & Love celebration in Beverly Hills where he was joined by family, friends and fans and a musical tribute by Silversun Pickups, Blake Mills and King Tuff as well as peace & love celebrations in 25 countries around the globe and into the universe via NASA who spread the message from Barstow California based station in the Deep Space Network. Last year Ringo released EP3 on September 16, 2022 and on November 18, 2022 EP3 was issued on 10” vinyl and blue cassette and accompanied with a new music video, “Everyone and Everything.” On November 25, 2022 Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band Live at the Greek 2019 (Roccabella via BFD/The Orchard) was released on Blu Ray, DVD, CD and a special yellow double vinyl. Ringo also toured with his All Starr Band with both Spring and Fall tour dates. Additionally, Ringo created 500 life sized “Peace and Love” sculptures of his iconic hand symbol. These were sold exclusively throughJulien’s Auctions to benefit the Lotus Foundation.

My Next Read: “Playin’ Possum: My Memories of George Jones” by Nancy Jones

0

Ask anyone who knows country music, “Who was the GOAT—the greatest of all time?” and the answers will inevitably lead to George Jones.

Millions of people know the name of the iconic country music artist, George Jones, but few people know that behind the man and his golden voice was a strong, feisty woman who not only saved his life from cocaine addiction, alcoholism, and other abusive and self-destructive behaviors, but also was instrumental in saving his soul.

Legends, half-truths, and downright lies abound about the iconic singer, but what secrets do people not know about him? What was it like to live with him through the darkest shadows and in the brightest of lights?

Married for more than thirty years to the greatest country music singer who ever lived, the man Frank Sinatra had whimsically referred to as “the second-greatest singer in America,” Nancy Jones knew George Jones better than anyone else on earth—the good George and the bad George, the horrendous, and the hilarious. George and Nancy married March 4, 1983, and with her help and encouragement, he quit his wild and wicked ways—for a while. Nancy soon learned, however, that the demons held a strong grip on the man she loved, and they were not about to release him without a fight. But Nancy Jones is a tenacious fighter, and most people who knew “the Possum,” credit Nancy with saving his life and rebuilding his career.

For the first time, in Playin’ Possum, Nancy Jones reveals the true “insider” perspectives and little known poignant and as well as humorous stories about the country music icon—his battles with cocaine, alcohol, abusive behavior toward her and others, his battles with himself, and most of all, his battles against the demons that sought to control him and ultimately destroy him.

Nancy knew there was a good man inside George Jones, and she felt strongly that God had given her the assignment to help him, even if he hurt her. She refused to give up on Jones. Although Tammy Wynette sang “Stand By Your Man,” it was actually Nancy Jones who stood by George for more than thirty years, and helped bring him to the Light. Together, they brought joy and light to millions of people.

Warner Music Canada and Warner Music India Create 91 North Records To Support Artists Of South Asian Heritage

0

Warner Music Canada and Warner Music India have come together to launch a new joint venture, 91 NORTH RECORDS, aimed at supporting artists of South Asian heritage.  The new entity will be guided by renowned artist and producer Ikwinder “Ikky” Singh, who has come onboard as Creative Director.

Ikky has already made huge waves across the industry, racking up more than two billion streams worldwide with songs such as Shubh’s “Baller”, Diljit Dosanjh’s “Chauffeur” and Sidhu Moose Wala’s “Bambiha Bole”.  He launched his own label, 4N Records, in partnership with Warner Music and Coalition Music in 2021.

91 NORTH RECORDS’ first signings are Canadian-based Punjabi stars Karan Aujla and Jonita Gandhi. Both artists will work closely with Ikky as well as A&R Director, Charlie B.

Karan released his new album Making Memories last Friday and over the last five years has become one of the scenes biggest artists. Since his first major hit “Don’t Worry” in 2018, he’s received almost three billion views on YouTube, has garnered over one billion audio streams and eight million followers across his social media channels.

The name 91 NORTH RECORDS references both countries with a nod to India’s country code and Canada’s geographical location and the logo is inspired by India’s national flower the lotus.

The label held a launch event at Warner Music Canada’s offices in Toronto on Tuesday, August 22.

Ikky, Creative Director, 91 NORTH RECORDS, says “I’ve always been fascinated by the blending of Indian and Western sounds into culturally impactful, innovative music. 91 NORTH RECORDS exists to elevate artists pursuing this fusion. Punjabi and South Asian music already competes worldwide, and I’m thrilled to collaborate with emerging talents, showcasing and amplifying what they have to offer. This is no experiment; it’s the future.”

Jay Mehta, Managing Director, Warner Music India, says: “We’re so excited by the launch of 91 NORTH RECORDS. This venture not only celebrates the musical styles of artists with South Asian heritage but also leverages the market potential of uniting two distinct fan bases to bring this music to the global stage. This is certainly going to be a gamechanger initiative for artists who will now have global support from A&R, marketing, collaborations and more.”

Kristen Burke, President, Warner Music Canada, adds: “91 NORTH RECORDS is dedicated to celebrating and amplifying Indian culture. There is an incredible new generation of talent rising, influenced by their South Asian heritage, and we want to make sure these artists are represented both here and around the world. This new venture allows artists to be truly authentic, and our global network gives us the opportunity to showcase their culture on a global stage.”

Alfonso Perez-Soto, President, Emerging Markets, Warner Music, concludes: “Punjabi music is currently going through a vibrant evolution, having been supported by multicultural Canada, it is now transforming from a regional and diaspora-based genre into a global force. This growth is thanks to exceptional production and artistry from the likes of Ikky and the ambition and understanding from Jay, Kristen and the teams at WM India and WM Canada. 91 NORTH RECORDS will act as the vital bridge between East and West – uniting talent, cultures, and ideas, and cementing a movement that is here to stay. At Warner Music we will continue to champion initiatives like this for the love of music, artists, and fans alike.”

There are almost 2.6 million people of South Asian heritage living in Canada and a new generation of artists from these communities are starting to have a massive impact in the country and internationally. There is also a strong musical connection between the South Asian diaspora in Canada and the subcontinent.  Three of the Top 10 tracks in India in 2022 were by Punjabi-Canadian artists according to IFPI figures.
