The Replacements Announce ‘Tim: Let It Bleed Edition’ Out September 22

0

Released in the fall of 1985, The Replacements’ major label debut, Tim peaked at #192 on the Billboard charts, selling just 75,000 copies. Over time, however, the record would find a mass audience among successive generations thanks to the enduring appeal of anthems like “Bastards of Young” and “Left of the Dial” and ballads like “Swingin Party” and “Here Comes a Regular.”

Even with Tim’s evolving status as an all-time classic, The Replacements remained unsatisfied with the sound of the record, largely centered on the mix done by the album’s producer, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Tommy Erdelyi, aka Tommy Ramone. Now, after four decades, the LP has finally been given a long overdue sonic overhaul as part of TIM: LET IT BLEED EDITION.

The 4CD/1LP deluxe boxed set is built around a stunning new mix of Tim by legendary producer/engineer Ed Stasium (Ramones, Talking Heads) and features a collection of previously unheard tracks (Sons of No One: Rare & Unreleased) and a classic concert from 1986 (Not Ready For Prime Time). TIM: LET IT BLEED EDITION will be available from Rhino on September 22 for $89.98.

Stasium, who was a close friend and longtime production partner of the late Erdelyi (who died in 2014), has fashioned the definitive mix of the 11-track Tim. Also included is a new and improved mastering of Erdelyi’s original 1985 mix of the album. This deluxe edition also includes a disc of unreleased recordings (among them, unearthed material from the band’s January 1985 session produced by Big Star legend Alex Chilton); as well as The Replacements’ entire January 11, 1986, show at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. In total, the box includes 65 tracks–50 of which have never been heard before.

The fans that purchase TIM: LET IT BLEED EDITION at Rhino.com will also receive a limited edition 7” vinyl single featuring two songs from the Chilton sessions: the rollicking road song “Nowhere is My Home” b/w the previously unreleased “Cello Version” of “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Those who purchase directly from Rhino will also have access to exclusive merch bundles.

Presented in a 12 x 12 hardcover book – loaded with dozens of previously unseen photos – the set features a detailed history of the Tim era written by Bob Mehr, who produced the box with Rhino’s Jason Jones. Mehr, author of The New York Times bestseller Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements, won a Grammy® award for his album notes to the band’s 2019 release, Dead Man’s Pop.

Mehr writes: “After nearly 40 years, Tim remains a charmed collision of intention and accident, a balance of deliberate anthems and tossed-off gems, of raucous release and refined beauty—and a record that perfectly captures the band’s fraught but always compelling ascent on the ladder of success.”

In addition to the revelatory new mix, the TIM: LET IT BLEED EDITION also boasts a fresh cover, featuring an instantly iconic 1985 image of the band in its Minneapolis rehearsal space, taken by noted photographer Moshe Brakha. Coincidentally, Brakha shot the cover of The Ramones’ 1977 album Leave Home, a record which marked the first collaboration between Tommy Erdelyi and Ed Stasium.

Stasium – who was originally considered to co-produce Tim with Erdelyi back in 1985 – was entrusted with the remix in 2022 and went back to the original multi-tracks, spending several months creating a fuller, deeply detailed and ultimately more satisfying version of the record, which finally captures the band’s raw power. Stasium also completed work on several previously unreleased Tim songs and alternates and did mixes of the Alex Chilton session material.

“I really loved working on this project,” noted Stasium. “It’s a great record, and now you can hear even better what’s great about it. But the best thing for me was that, in a funny and really beautiful way, I got to work with my dear friend Tommy Erdelyi once again.”

Even before signing with Sire/Warner Bros. in early 1985, The Replacements – singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Chris Mars and lead guitarist Bob Stinson – began recording new material with their musical/spiritual godfather Alex Chilton that January in their hometown of Minneapolis. They followed up by cutting initial demos with Erdelyi in April, then starting the Tim sessons in earnest that summer. Sons of No One: Rare & Unreleased collects all that material, including illuminating alternate versions of songs like “Can’t Hardly Wait,” “Bastards of Young,” and “Hold My Life” – plus a unique and previously unheard original, “Havin Fun,” written by Tommy Stinson, and sung by Westerberg.

The final disc, Not Rady For Prime Time, captures the band performing live at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro in January 1986. A soundboard recording made by the band’s live mixer, the late Monty Lee Wilkes, the show was one-off date that came just a week before the group’s infamous appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which ultimately saw them banned from the network. The 28-song Metro performance fins the original lineup of the band at its final peak, with incendiary versions of Replacements classics (“Color Me Impressed,” “Answering Machine”), rarely played deep cuts (“Mr. Whirly,” “Go”), as well covers of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Sham 69, plus a rare lead vocal turn from Bob Stinson on The Novas’ Minnesota garage rock classic “The Crusher.”

Additionally, TIM: LET IT BLEED EDITON will include Stasium’s new mix of the record on 180-gram vinyl, cut by Chris Bellman of Bernie Grundman mastering.

DJ Khaled Announces Blockbuster New Album ‘Til Next Time’

0

Back with the kind of blockbuster announcement only he can deliver, DJ Khaled is set to return with his anxiously awaited 14th full-length LP and the most anticipated hip-hop event of 2023, TIL NEXT TIME, the first offering from his newly minted partnership We The Best Music Group/Def Jam Recordings.

“SUPPOSED TO BE LOVED,” the massive first single from TIL NEXT TIME featuring superstar collaborators Lil Baby, Future and Lil Uzi Vert, is streaming everywhere this Friday.

Khaled personally broke the news (and the internet) by sharing a powerhouse trailer co-starring his sons Asahd and Aalam Tuck Khaled as well as his Queen Nicole Tuck Khaled. The clip opens with Khaled on the golf course where he starts his day. He sinks a seemingly impossible shot as the video intersperses vignettes from his life at the beach, on a yacht, on a horse, on the basketball court, a soccer field, back on the golf course, and in the studio. Khaled attacks blasting golf balls through the galaxy symbolizing how extra-planetary his reach is, followed by his sons Asahd and Aalam who chant “Let’s Go Golfing!”

Unveiled at the end of the trailer, “SUPPOSED TO BE LOVED,” is an explosive anthem accompanied by the game’s heaviest hitters and icons. Stay tuned for the premiere of cinematic music video for the track.

Khaled’s cultural imprint only continues to magnify. Last week he personally opened the We The Best x SNIPES store on Collins Avenue in Miami solidifying a one-of-a kind partnership like no other. This innovative retail destination ushered Miami to the forefront of sneaker & streetwear culture while embodying SNIPES’ commitment to the communities they serve. The We The Best x SNIPES store delivers an unparalleled shopping experience, combining the essence of South Florida’s vibrant sneaker and streetwear culture with the latest SNIPES apparel and exclusive co-branded We The Best merchandise.

In a dizzying flurry of high-profile activity, Khaled also recently hosted the inaugural 2023 WE THE BEST FOUNDATION X JORDAN BRAND GOLF CLASSIC at the MIAMI BEACH GOLF CLUB in Miami. The star-studded charity event included Sean “Diddy” Combs, who donated $150,000 from the Sean Combs Foundation, as well as Serena Williams, Odell Beckham Jr, Quavo, Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Bubba Watson, Bubba Wallace, Cedric the Entertainer, Jalen Rose, The Dream, Mina Harigae, Shannon Sharpe, Cris Carter, Terrell Owens, Pat Perez, Marcus Jordan, Jeffrey Jordan, Hassan Whiteside, and more. Khaled and event partner Snipes presented a check for $20,000 in donation to FORE Life, a non-profit that utilizes the game of golf and its character building skills to empower vulnerable youth to help them survive and succeed, as well as a $10,000 check to Circle of Brotherhood, a Miami organization of primarily Black men from all walks of life dedicated to community service, economic development, crime prevention, conflict resolution and mediation, educational services, and youth mentorship.

Nearly 2 Billion Music Discoveries Happen on Spotify Every Day

0

rom personalized Niche Mixes to our AI-powered DJ, Spotify is constantly helping listeners discover new music to add to their queues. In fact, what fans love most about Spotify is our array of features that are specifically curated for each person’s audio taste.

We took a journey of our own to understand how Spotify listeners explore new music. What we found spanned listeners across generations, and music across decades.

“As humans, we are wired to explore, to seek the new and the unexpected, and to learn and expand and deepen our understanding of the world,” said Dr. Dacher Keltner, professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Greater Good Science Center. “This quest for discovery is one of our greatest species-defining strengths.”

When we looked into new discoveries across generations, our data found that Gen Z and Gen Alpha are discovering music at different rates than baby boomers. While baby boomers actually discover music more often than Gen Z in the U.S., globally, Gen Z and Gen Alpha take the lead.

“It doesn’t surprise me that Gen Z leads music discovery in the rest of the world since younger people are actively seeking new musical forms to change society and the status quo,” explained Dr. Keltner.

We were curious what Dr. Keltner thought of discoveries among Gen Z listeners. “Today young people face many challenges,” he said. “The science of music speaks to how deeply listening and discovering music can counter this for young people. There’s the awe of finding something new; how music can lead young people to feel calmer, both in mind and body; and how music surfaces what we most care about in life.”

Baby boomers are still interested in discovering new songs. Dr. Keltner thinks this could be a product of their feeling more lonely, stressed, connected, and curious. “But discovering new music can bring us a sense of connection and contentment rather than stress, a sense of identity within a community, and awe and curiosity.”

And some generations are offering the music of their youth to younger listeners. Well, the music of Gen X’s youth, specifically. Gen Z is dipping their toes into more nostalgic songs.

Music fans looking to discover more nostalgic tracks or feel connected to past generations can check out some of our Niche Mixes like Old School Rap MixThrowback R&B Mix, and 70s Disco Mix.

“In many parts of the world we lack intergenerational contact. It is increasingly hard to understand and share in the emotions and thoughts of people in different groups than our own,” reasoned Dr. Keltner. “The kinds of music discoveries you found—of boomers discovering new music and Gen Z and Gen Alpha exploring music more from the past—suggests that music can be a powerful way to enhance intergenerational understanding and, more generally, foster empathy across differences.”

We also know that other factors drive music discovery on Spotify, including, of course, cultural moments like television showsmoviesvideo game competitions, and much more.

But discovery is also driven by less-obvious moments. In our research, we found that people tend to stream happier music (measured by the average valence of music streamed, which describes the musical “positiveness” conveyed by a track) more on Mondays than on the rest of the week. Dr. Keltner had an explanation for this, too.

“We listen to music for many reasons: to find peace and contentment, insights into the struggles of life, inspiration, and a sense of identity. Mondays often present challenges as we move from the weekend to the work week: stress, questions about what will inspire us that week, and why we are doing the work we are doing. Music on Mondays provides windows into answers to these aspects of shifting to Monday.

Mondays are also when Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist, a weekly dose of recommended songs from Spotify, is refreshed. Though the playlist is personalized to each listener, songs most frequently discovered on Discover Weekly include “Glass Jaw” by chokecherry and “Heart of Gold (with Bon Iver)” by Ilsey.

Many podcasts have also become favorites to start the week. The meditation-focused The Sleep Zone Podcast is one of the most popular podcasts streamed first thing Monday mornings, giving Spotify fans some zen as they face the week ahead.

Artists like KAROL GShakira, and Miley Cyrus are distinctive to Mondays, when we may need an energy boost, but we found different artists and playlists trending on Sundays. Lana Del ReyBillie Eilish, and SZA help us get into our feels, while “Sad Country Mix” is the most streamed Niche Mix on Sunday nights. And it’s all about that good night’s sleep before the rush of a new week kicks off: “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” by Adelmar Borrego is the most distinctive track streamed on Sunday evenings globally.

From activating Smart Shuffle in your playlists to going on a ride with your personalized AI DJ, there are countless ways for Spotify to lead you to new music. Give them a try on your next listen.
