Norah Jones To Release Record Store Day Exclusive LP Of Songs From Her Podcast ‘Norah Jones Is Playing Along’

0

On Nov. 24, Norah Jones will release a Black Friday Record Store Day exclusive LP featuring songs from her podcast Norah Jones Is Playing Along. Available exclusively at indie record stores on color vinyl, the collection presents a selection of her collaborations with a diverse range of artists including Jeff TweedyTarriona “Tank” BallMavis StaplesMarc RebilletChris ThileValerie JuneLogicBrian BladeRodrigo AmaranteSasha DobsonLukas Nelson, and Bedouine.

Each episode of Norah Jones Is Playing Along features the 9-time GRAMMY Award winning singer, songwriter, and pianist sitting down with one of her favourite musicians for candid conversation and impromptu musical collaborations. Recent episodes have featured Questlove, Christian McBride, and Margaret Glaspy with upcoming guests to include The National (Oct. 10), Dave Grohl (Oct. 24), and Rufus Wainwright (Nov. 7). Watch video of Jones performing live in the studio with each guest HERE.

“I love playing music with people and this seemed like a fun way for me to do it, especially with musicians who I don’t normally cross paths with,” Norah says. “I’m open to all kinds of music and pushing myself out of my comfort zone as well as reconnecting with past collaborators in a new way. I remember listening to Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz program from NPR on old bootleg tapes in high school and it was my honor to be one of her guests when I first started making records. This show has a similar spirit, with all the casualness of just getting together to play songs and chat with no parameters or formal expectations. The podcast format is perfect for this kind of connection between musicians and the audience. Collaboration is one of the best ways to stay inspired, it widens the mind to infinite possibilities.”

Norah Jones first emerged on the world stage with the 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self-described “moody little record” that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 GRAMMY Awards including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Since then, Jones has become a nine-time GRAMMY-winner, sold more than 52 million albums, and her songs have been streamed ten billion times worldwide. She has released a series of critically acclaimed and commercially successful solo albums—Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), The Fall (2009), Little Broken Hearts (2012), Day Breaks (2016), Pick Me Up Off The Floor (2020), the live album ‘Til We Meet Again (2021), and her holiday album I Dream Of Christmas (2021)—as well as albums with her collective bands The Little Willies, El Madmo, and Puss N Boots featuring Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper. The 2010 compilation …Featuring Norah Jones showcased her incredible versatility by collecting her collaborations with artists as diverse as Willie Nelson, Foo Fighters, Outkast, and Herbie Hancock. In 2022, Jones launched her podcast Norah Jones Is Playing Along which features candid conversations and impromptu musical collaborations with some her favourite musicians.

The new dates follow the first leg of Childers’ “Mule Pull ’24 Tour,” which sold-out instantly when tickets went on-sale last month. The extensive tour kicks off in February and includes stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden (two nights), Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena (two nights), Inglewood’s Kia Forum, Austin’s Moody Center, Fort Worth’s Dickies Arena and London’s Eventim Apollo (two nights) as well as shows in Ireland, Germany, Sweden, Norway and more.

The upcoming performances celebrate Childers’ acclaimed new album, Rustin’ In The Rain (Hickman Holler Records/RCA Records), which recently debuted at #10 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart with 38,500 equivalent units sold—a career-high sales week for Childers. Stream/purchase here.

In celebration of the new record, Childers recently spoke with The New York Times, who praises, “His songs with roots in bluegrass, Southern rock and Appalachian tradition have pushed the boundaries of country music and even his own fan base, while cementing him as one of the most successful touring and streaming artists in his field—without the aid of radio,” and continues, “when he sings live, his eyes burn with the ferocity of a preacher, and fans hang on to every word.”

Recorded at Dragline Studios, the album was produced by Childers and his longtime band, The Food Stamps—James Barker (pedal steel), Craig Burletic (bass), CJ Cain (guitar), Rodney Elkins (drums), Chase Lewis (keyboards) and Jesse Wells (guitar, fiddle).

The new album follows last year’s triple album, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?, which featured eight songs presented in three distinct sonic perspectives—Hallelujah, Jubilee and Joyful Noise. Released to widespread acclaim, Esquire praised, “Who’s doing it better than Childers in roots music these days? No one,” while the Associated Press declared, “fearless exuberance…one of country music’s most compelling and unpredictable artists” and NPR Music asserted, “eight songs so good he had to record them thrice.” Before Hounds, Childers released 2020’s Grammy-nominated surprise album, Long Violent History, which NPR Music called an “explicit and remarkable stand in solidarity.” His two previous releases, 2019’s #1 Country Squire as well 2017’s RIAA Platinum debut, Purgatory, were released to overwhelming critical and commercial acclaim. In the years since his debut, Childers has earned two Grammy nominations and has been featured on “CBS This Morning,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series and “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.”

YES’s ‘The Yes Album’ Box Set To Include Rarities And New Dolby Atmos Mix By Steven Wilson

0

Rhino takes a deep dive into Yes’ third studio album with an upcoming boxed set that presents a newly remastered version of The Yes Album expanded with rarities, two previously unreleased concerts, and fresh mixes by Steven Wilson, including an immersive Dolby Atmos Mix.

THE YES ALBUM (SUPER DELUXE EDITION) contains 4 CDs, a Blu-ray disc, and an LP arriving on November 24. Pre-order HERE. The music will also be available from digital and streaming platforms on the same day. As a preview, an early take of “I’ve Seen All Good People” is out digitally today.

THE YES ALBUM (SUPER DELUXE EDITION) includes Steven Wilson’s newly remastered version of the original album on both CD and LP. Two previously unreleased concerts from 1971 will debut in the set as well. The first was recorded just a few weeks before The Yes Album was released, while the second was recorded six months later during the band’s U.S. tour. These remarkable performances include live versions of songs from the album, such as “Yours Is No Disgrace” and “Perpetual Change,” as well as “Astral Traveller” and “Everydays” from the previous album, Time and a Word (1970).

“The Yes Album represents to me the invention of 70’s Yes. This was aided by leaving outside material off the record and heavily investing in the influences we brought together, particularly the arrangement skills and utilizing the available best technology.

Our adventurism shows in the originality of the music and lyrics, as none of us had done anything quite like this before. ” – Steve Howe

Wilson features the 2014 remixed The Yes Album and instrumental versions of all six album tracks in the upcoming Super Deluxe Edition. In addition, the Blu-ray disc offers four new mixes of The Yes Album, including two versions in 5.1 Surround Sound, the 2023 Remaster, and the Dolby Atmos Mix.

Wilson shares his insights into the new mixes in the set’s liner notes: “For the Atmos Mix, I used my 5.1 as a starting point but found myself taking quite a different approach on some parts of the music, partly by virtue of now having the extra speakers to place the sounds in, but also because I’ve learned a few things in the nearly ten years since I first remixed the album…I hope you enjoy The Yes Album in its new, fully spatialized form. To me, it still sounds as fresh as the day it was recorded.”

“The Yes Album welcomed new guitarist, Steve Howe, into the band and Yes ascended to new heights.” – Tony Kaye

Initially released in the U.K. on February 19, 1971, it was the group’s – Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye, Bill Bruford, and Steve Howe – first album to feature all-original material and introduced signature epics like “Starship Trooper” and “I’ve Seen All Good People.” The album peaked at No.4 in the U.K. and was the group’s first to crack the Top 40 in the U.S., where it would eventually be certified platinum.

Today, Yes is the most enduring, ambitious, and virtuosic progressive band in history, with a discography spanning over five decades. The Grammy Award-winning band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 and has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

“It’s wonderful to know that 50 years later our music is still appreciated.  It was a “make or break” time for the band on many levels. The harmony within the band was really special at that time, and it came through in the music.” – Jon Anderson

Canadian Punk Pioneer Eugene Ripper Drops New Single “Battle of the Punks and Pushers” Ahead of Fall Tour

0

Eugene Ripper, the trailblazing fast folk rocker and Canadian punk pioneer, delivers us a raucous bang of dirty guitars and stomping boots as he releases his latest digital single, “Battle of the Punks and Pushers.” This electrifying release coincides with his upcoming CA/EU/UK tour, which kicks off in Toronto in September 2023.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Har0dmDscY8

Ripper, a seasoned veteran and undeniable talent of the Canadian punk scene, cut his rock and roll teeth as a founding guitarist in the first-wave Canadian surf punkabilly rockers Stark Naked & The Fleshtones. Ripper’s musical journey has been nothing short of remarkable. After his time with the Fleshtones, he embarked on a solo career that has spanned decades, characterized by a unique synthesis of punk, folk, roots, and rock. This mixing bowl of tonal expressions allowed Ripper to forge his own path to dirty musical heaven.

His raw and understated music spans a broad spectrum, from the barbed fast ‘n’ furious acoustic punk folk to rock n’ roll, sonic atmospherics, lyrical dark ballads, and beat-driven spoken word. Ripper has consistently pushed boundaries, wrapping it all up in a post-modern stance and punk rock ethos that has earned him a dedicated fan base worldwide.

Ripper’s latest offering, “Battle of the Punks and Pushers,” is a companion to his previously released “Folk Song 3000,” which arrived earlier in the summer. This new single is more than just a song; it’s a sonic journey through the gritty streets of urban life. All thanks to a stalk offering of magical words, handed to us in Ripper’s style of dirty delivery.

‘I climb so high
I climb so high
I climb so high
There’s only one way I’m coming down.’

“Battle of the Punks and Pushers” is a stylistic mashup that showcases Ripper’s versatile musical talents and thought process. Produced with sonic strokes of fuzzy-grungy blues-infused punk folk rock, the track is supercharged with a stomping beat, looping harmonica, and bouncing percussion, all surrounding Ripper’s signature acoustic guitar, edgy vocals and gritty lyrical stance.

The inspiration for this song came from the writings of American journalist Gay Talese, whose musings about late 20th-century urban life in New York City, particularly the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, became the kernel of inspiration for Ripper. Speaking about the story behind the song, Ripper commented:

“I’ve always been a fan of Talese’s non-fiction work and particularly his detailed observations concerning daily life in a massive metropolis like New York City. So, of course, his story about the building of The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in the early ’60s captured my imagination: The enormity of the challenge, the sheer volume of material, the courage of the workers, and the dangers and the risks they endured – to get the job done…to make a living. Once I got into it – it was the idea of the humanity inside the machine that intrigued me the most.”

Catch Eugene Ripper’s electrifying new single, “Battle of the Punks and Pushers,” as he takes you on a musical journey through the urban jungle. Get ready to be captivated by the raw energy and storytelling prowess of this punk folk legend.

“Battle of the Punks and Pushers” is available now on all major digital music platforms. For fans looking for an extra special treat, the track can also be found as a bonus on the limited edition “Folk Song 3000″ 7” vinyl, exclusively available at Ripper’s upcoming tour dates.

Singer-Songwriter Gerry Jack Macks Takes Listeners on a Gritty Musical Journey with ‘Too Many Times Down That Road’

0

Singer-songwriter Gerry Jack Macks is back with a brand-new single that promises to take listeners on a bumpy journey down the rough road ahead. The release of his new single “Too Many Times Down That Road” showcases Macks’s unique musical style, which defies genre boundaries and features an impressive collaboration with two-time JUNO Award winner Al Lerman and talented young drummer Sara Varro.

Macks’s latest single was born out of a chance encounter over a cup of coffee with his friend Al Lomas. The longtime trucker had just navigated a treacherous backroad filled with potholes and ruts. Inspired by Lomas’ description of the rough journey, Macks penned the song’s lyrics right there in the diner, capturing the essence of a challenging path with a catchy tune.

“Too Many Times Down That Road” is set to be a high-energy, genre-blending track that continues Macks’s tradition of pushing musical boundaries. The single is part of Macks’s ongoing effort to create music that defies categorization and appeals to a wide range of music enthusiasts.

Macks is not your typical artist. A multi-instrumentalist, he plays most of the instruments on his recordings, and his music effortlessly crosses the lines of various genres, including outlaw country, country rock, and southern rock. His work draws inspiration from rhythm and blues, pop, and Canadiana.

“I never really have any idea exactly what genre or genres a recording is when I release it,” Macks confesses. “The distributors force artists to choose from a strict list of genres before the artist can release recordings, and I always struggle with great angst when forced to pigeon-hole my music.”

Macks has a long and storied musical career that began in the early 1970s. With the support of legendary Edmonton musician Tommy Banks’ wife, Ida Banks, Macks quickly rose from a beginner on the music circuits of Alberta, BC, NWT, and the Yukon to a full-time music career.

Over the years, his music has evolved to encompass Jazz, Blues, Easy Listening, Country, Folk, Pop, Rock, and more. Macks’s upcoming projects include the highly anticipated Sleepy Time Sessions album, inspired by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, and Nat King Cole, as well as several other roots-based albums.

“I have always had deep appreciation for the people who follow my music, and I take every opportunity to remain in personal contact with them,” says Macks.

Be prepared to join Macks on the rough road ahead as he continues to captivate audiences with his unique musical journey.

Geddy Lee Announces ‘My Effin’ Life’ In Conversation With Special Guest Interviewer + Fan Q&A Tour

0

Today, award-winning Canadian musician Geddy Lee announced My Effin’ Life In Conversation. The tour will see the Rush singer/bassist bring to life his forthcoming memoir My Effin’ Life, due for release on November 14th on Harper Collins. Produced by Live Nation, the 14-city tour kicks off on November 13th at The Beacon Theatre in New York, making stops across North America in Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and more before wrapping up in Toronto at Massey Hall on December 7th.

The evening promises to be a once-in-a-life-time event. After the curtain rises, Geddy Lee will give his fans a peek into the very fabric of his life: from a deep reflection of his family and childhood, to a dive into the history of Rush; from the determined pursuit of music, to the personal memories with his life-long friends and band-mates, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. Joined on stage by a special guest interviewer, Geddy Lee will be reading key passages from his forthcoming book My Effin’ Life; he will then share thoughts and stories taken from his experience. Furthermore, fans will then have the chance to participate in a special Q&A, with Geddy Lee answering their questions directly.

“Writing this book has meant spending so much time living in the past”. Lee continues: “I’ve never lived my life looking anywhere but forward, which is why I resisted doing this kind of thing for so long. Being in a band all those years was reassuring because it was an ongoing thing. It felt like it was forever. There was always unfinished business: the next record, the next set design, the next tour. It’s been the theme of my life. But you need a lot more determination to proceed in the world of music without the comfort of your bandmates, and I can only hope that finishing this book will release me to return to what I do and love best”.

General on sale beginning Friday, October 6th at 10am local time at Ticketmaster.com. Every ticket purchased includes a copy of Geddy Lee My Effin’ Life which will be provided to ticket holder upon entry into the venue. There is a 4 ticket limit per person.
