Hayden Announces Canadian Tour Dates In Support Of New LP, Are We Good

1

Legendary and heavily influential indie-folk rock artist Hayden recently released Are We Good, his hotly anticipated first new album in 8 years, today on Arts & Crafts. Introduced by “East Coast”, “Miss Fort Erie”, and “On A Beach (feat Feist)”, which earned acclaim spanning Stereogum, SPIN, Cool Hunting, Under The Radar, The Line Of Best Fit, BrooklynVegan and more, Hayden’s triumphant ninth studio album is a crowning achievement in his well-deep catalog of carefully hewn indie rock, dating back to his debut album Everything I Long For in 1996.

“On A Beach (feat Feist)” was released alongside a cinematic, star-studded official video, also featuring the inimitable Leslie Feist with cameos by Matt Berninger of The National and beloved actor Steve Buscemi (who Hayden last worked with on the music for Trees Lounge, Buscemi’s 1997 directorial debut). Today, Hayden reveals the stirring love song and album title track “Are We Good” which was co-written with Berninger.

“This song was hanging around for a while with a bunch of mumbled lyrics I had as place-setters,” recalls Hayden. “The only line that stuck was the refrain ‘are we good.’ I sent it over to Matt [Berninger of The National] and he came up with the rest. When I read the lines ‘Are you worried about the past, coming back to you too fast, Are you worried about the sea, And what’s going on underneath,’ I knew I’d sent the song to the right guy.”

A meditative and electric tune, “Are We Good” is quintessential Hayden, with unabashed nods to the fluidity of Leonard Cohen and the buzz of Crazy Horse. As the album’s namesake, “Are We Good” posits Hayden Desser, peppered and grizzled (by the pandemic or parenting), in an attic studio stand-off with writer’s block during early lockdown. The album’s eleven songs were written, produced, and mixed predominantly by Hayden at Skyscraper National Park, the attic studio of his Toronto home. A perfect combination of complex family life – he and his wife are parents to a child with developmental disabilities – coupled with the grinding halt of creative inertia, Hayden found himself trying to balance the album on an unachievable ledge of perfection. Breaking from these confines – and a decades-long career defined by his staunchly DIY approach – Hayden made an album richly inspired by collaboration, including the likes of Feist, Aaron Dessner and Matt Berninger of The National, drummer James Krivchenia of Big Thief, and engineer Jonathan Low (Taylor Swift, Big Red Machine).

Eight years in the making, Are We Good is an album dedicated to relationships, and the deep personal entanglements that help define our sense of selves. On Are We Good – an evolutionary album, “the sound of an artist who’s been learning how to challenge an aesthetic they’ve been exploring for 30 years” (sometimes past the point of perfection) – Hayden opened up to new approaches to awaken his storytelling. A statement of permanence that chases the most fleeting of emotions, on Are We Good Hayden proves that reinvention is the greatest reminder of the essence of who you are.

On November 15, Hayden and his band will bring his new album out on the road for a string of Canadian dates that promise to be as magical as the album itself. =

Relive Eight Decades of Iconic Songs That Hit #2 On The Charts

0

Standing in the shadow of No. 1 are hundreds of songs that stopped just short of the top of the Billboard charts. Ed Sheeran’s “Bad Habits.” Madonna’s “Material Girl.” The Village People’s “YMCA.” They were all massive hits, but none of them ever made it to the top spot!

This month, in partnership with Billboard, SiriusXM is counting down the biggest hits that only got the silver medal. An exclusive limited-run channel, the Billboard #2 Countdown Channel plays songs that peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — from the chart’s start in August 1958 through today! Hear eight decades of No. 2 hits, including songs by Taylor Swift, Elton John, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Carpenters, Drake, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and hundreds more!

The Billboard #2 Countdown Channel will be available on the SiriusXM App and satellite channel 14 from September 7–20.

Canadian Proto-Punk Greats Teenage Head Release ‘Performance: Live At Heatwave’

0

In the summer of 1977 when the whole punk scene was blossoming in Toronto, word hit the street that some big-time manager was looking for the best punk band in Toronto. That guy turned out to be John Brower and he decided the best Toronto punk band was Teenage Headfrom Hamilton, Ontario, and the area’s answer to the Ramones, New York Dolls, and Stooges. And Brower’s decision was a wise one – Teenage Head (comprised of singer Frankie Venom, guitarist Gord Lewis, bassist Steve Mahon, and drummer Nick Stipanitz) quickly became the most popular Canadian punk band, on the strength of such classic studio efforts as 1979’s self-titled debut, 1980’s platinum-certified Frantic City, and 1982’s gold-certified Some Kinda Fun.

But it was on the concert stage that Teenage Head was best experienced. And now, fans will be able to hear a vastly sonically improved version of one of their most popular shows recorded in 1980, with the arrival of Performance: Live at Heatwave on September 5, 2023 via SINGMarket.

“Teenage Head was never booked to play the Heatwave Festival, that’s why our name never appeared on the poster or the ticket!,” remembers Mahon. “After our infamous sell out show at Ontario Place on June 2nd, 1980, we were set to headline a festival to be called the ‘Canadian Rock Festival’ on August 20th at Exhibition Stadium during the CNE (Toronto’s annual summer fair). Alice Cooper was set to play the same venue the night before, but when it turned out that Alice was not exactly in shape to get through the show, the thousands of fans in the Stadium expressed their unhappiness and ripped the place apart and did extensive damage to the sound system, as a result our show was cancelled. Our management team contacted our early supporter John Brower who was the promoter of Heatwave and of course he offered us a slot. Our set was recorded by Doug McClement on 8-track half-inch tape on his Comfort Sound truck.”

And according to the bassist, it turns out that the performance became one of the band’s best-known out of near-tragedy. “On September 7, 1980, a little after playing Heatwave we suffered a terrible accident traveling home from a gig in Palmerston, Ontario. Gord’s injuries were devastating, he was out of commission for the better part of a year. So, knowing we weren’t able to play the 3rd annual broadcast on Halloween, we quickly went into Amber Studios, also in Toronto. There, we mixed the Heatwave show, which Q107 did broadcast on Halloween 1980 (which explains all the not-so-great bootleg versions). It’s very possible that we may have never pulled that tape from the vaults had it not been for that accident. We are really lucky to have had these tapes. Now thanks to the wizardry of Peter Moore we finally have a great version that captures the power of the day. Doug Arrowsmith used two songs in the documentary Picture My Face: The Story of Teenage Head – and here are the rest.”

Live at Heatwave will be available as a killer deluxe package (see below for details), as well as less expensive offerings that focus solely on the 1980 performance. But either way, fans of Teenage Head are in for a special blast from the past, according to Mahon – “So kick back, crank it up, grab a cold one and transport back to Mosport Park, August 23, 1980, it’s a TEENAGE HEAD PERFORMANCE LIVE AT HEATWAVE.”

Beastie Boys Square Unveiling Happens In NYC On Saturday September 9

0

In commemoration of the unveiling of Beastie Boys Square and 50 years of Hip-Hop, Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Adrock), in association with The City of New York and Council Member Chris Marte, will be celebrating in the Lower East Side on September 9 beginning at 12:00 pm. on Rivington Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets. The celebration will go on until 2:00 p.m., and will feature a special guest DJ set by Jon Bless HiFi System, pop-up activations and more.

Diamond and Horovitz will be in attendance for the dedication of Beastie Boys Square, a renaming of the corner of Ludlow and Rivington Streets, the site where the iconic gatefold cover of the band’s sophomore album Paul’s Boutique was shot.

The christening of Beastie Boys Square marks another milestone in Beastie Boys’ decades-long relationship with New York City. Beastie Boys and NYC have been inextricably intertwined since the band was formed at the late Adam “MCA” Yauch’s 17th birthday in uptown Manhattan, quickly becoming a staple of the city’s hardcore punk underground. The relationship grew in depth and complexity as the trio’s debut album Licensed to Ill became the first rap record to hit #1 on the US album chart, reaching an early apex with the 1989 release of Paul’s Boutique. Sorely under-appreciated upon its original release, Paul’s Boutique has since grown dramatically in stature — often referred to as the “Sgt. Pepper’s of hip hop,” certified double platinum by the RIAA for sales of 2 million, and appearing on all-time best-of lists including TIME, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, SPIN, and many more.

Paul’s Boutique also carries the distinction of being arguably the Beastie Boys album most steeped in New York culture (despite being recorded in Los Angeles), with lyrical references including the Ramones, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, the Village, Chrystie Street, the D Train, Ed Koch, the Knicks, the Yankees, Shea Stadium, the Palladium, Phil Rizzuto, the Atlantic Antic, the New York Post, El Diario, Bernard Goetz, Broadway, Jazzy Jay, Bad Brains, and more.

Additionally, the ongoing celebration of the 50 years of Hip-Hop includes the cinema debut of the Apple Original Film Beastie Boys Story, directed by Beastie Boys collaborator and Academy Award winner Spike Jonze, at the IFC Center in Greenwich Village with showings on both Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9 at 11:30pm.

And last, but certainly not least, SiriusXM will be relaunching their exclusive Beastie Boys Channel this Thursday, September 7th. Tune in to channel 105 for classics, deep cuts, live recordings and more.

Erasure’s Vince Clarke Announces His Debut Solo Album ‘Songs of Silence’

0

Vince Clarke, the primary composer and musician in Erasure, and previous songwriter and member of Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and The Assembly, presents (unbelievably) his first ever solo album, Songs of Silence, available November 17th on heavy weight vinyl and CD.

As the album title suggests, Songs of Silence is a lyricless, instrumental album, and is hugely evocative for that. Unlike anything you’ve previously heard from Vince Clarke as an artisan of dynamic electropop, Songs of Silence has about it a more sober ambient electronic beauty, its unique characteristics put it in a category of its own.

For the creation of the record Vince set himself two rules – first that the sounds he himself generated for the album would come solely from Eurorack (a modular synthesizer format introduced in the mid-90s) and secondly that each track would be based around one note, maintaining a single key throughout. The resultant pieces, with the Eurorack sound clay then manipulated on Logic Pro, amount to wordless narratives, in which a sense of synthgenerated, cosmic remoteness is often jolted by stark interventions, reminders of the human hand at work amid this machinery.

This album sees Vince Clarke not content to rest on his considerable pop legacy, and instead open up for himself, and for the rest of us, exciting new electronic vistas in which the permutations and possibilities are limitless.

The Rolling Stones Unveil New Single “Angry” From Hackney Diamonds, Their First Studio Album Of New Material Since 2005

0

The Rolling Stones, come roaring out of the traps today with the release of their rocking single “Angry” (Listen Here.) It arrives alongside the announcement of their hugely anticipated new album, titled Hackney Diamonds and released on October 20th. The exciting news was shared today by Mick, Keith and Ronnie at a special media launch event at the historic Hackney Empire, East London’s epicentre of pioneering art for almost 125 years. The launch was hosted by American tv star Jimmy Fallon and streamed worldwide via YouTube.

The 12-track album, for which full track list information will be revealed in due course, was recorded in various locations around the world, including Henson Recording Studios, Los Angeles; Metropolis Studios, London; Sanctuary Studios, Nassau, Bahamas; Electric Lady Studios, New York; and The Hit Factory/Germano Studios, also in New York.

The album is their first studio set of new material since 2005’s A Bigger Bang, coincidently released on September 6, 18 years ago. Since then, the Stones have continued to smash box office records for fun on a series of global sellout tours and released 2016’s Grammy Award winning Blue & Lonesome, which featured their brilliant versions of many of the blues tracks that helped shape their sound, and topped album charts around the world. Last year, they thrilled European audiences totalling nearly a quarter of a million on the anniversary Sixty tour.

Hackney Diamonds marks The Stones (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood) first collaboration with New York-born producer and musician Andrew Watt, who was named Producer of the Year at the 2021 GRAMMY® Awards and has worked with Post Malone, Iggy Pop and Elton John. The exhilarating “Angry” is accompanied by a music video directed by Francois Rousselet, whose credits include work with Nike, Diesel, Pharrell Williams, and on the Stones’ “Ride ‘Em On Down,” from Blue & Lonesome. The new promo clip stars Emmy-nominated actress Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus, Euphoria, The Handmaid’s Tale). Watch Angry music video.

The bespoke artwork for Hackney Diamonds is by digital animator Paulina Almira.

Geffen/UMe will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Nirvana‘s third and ultimately final studio album, IN UTERO, originally released on 21 September 1993, with several multi-format reissues, arriving on 27 October 2023.

Configurations include a limited-edition 8LP Super Deluxe box set, 5CD Super Deluxe box set, 1 LP + 10” edition, 2CD Deluxe edition, and a Digital Super Deluxe edition.

IN UTERO went on to mark Nirvana’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified 6x platinum in the United States.

The three Super Deluxe Edition releases comprise a total of 72 tracks with 53 previously unreleased tracks. Among the unreleased material, two full In Utero-era concerts, namely Live In Los Angeles (1993) and the band’s final Seattle performance, Live In Seattle (1994), are included in addition to six bonus live tracks from Rome, Springfield, and New York.

Seattle producer and engineer Jack Endino—who helmed the band’s 1988 debut Bleach—reconstructed the live tracks from stereo soundboard tapes for this year’s reissue.

Additionally, IN UTERO’s original twelve songs, along with five bonus tracks and B-sides, have been newly remastered from the original analog master stereo tapes by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Services—who assisted Albini as the only other engineer at the original sessions.

The physical Super Deluxe Edition box sets also boast a removable front-cover acrylic panel with the album’s iconic Angel; a 48-page hardcover book with unreleased photos; a 20-page newly designed fanzine; a Los Angeles tour poster lithograph by hot rod artist Coop; replicas of the 1993 record store promo Angel mobile, three gig fliers, two ticket stubs for Los Angeles and Seattle, an All-Access tour laminate, and four cloth sticky tour backstage passes: Press, Photo, After Show, and Local Crew.

Available exclusively at online stores at uDiscovermusic.com and SoundofVinyl.com and limited to 3000 units worldwide, fans who buy either Super Deluxe Edition will receive a Nirvana acrylic stand to display their angel-on-acrylic panel included in both boxset configurations.
