Fiddle-Singer and Songwriter Aleksi Campagne Stuns On Debut Bilingual Single “Won’t Be Scared” From Upcoming ‘For The Giving’ Album

0

Aleksi Campagne, Montreal’s bilingual indie-folk fiddle-singer, is ready to captivate and comfort listeners with his debut single “Won’t Be Scared,” available in English and French on June 10th, with the full-length album, For The Giving released on July 13, 2023.

The lead single “Won’t Be Scared” from his highly anticipated debut album, For The Giving, was selected was selected as a finalist at Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious songwriting competition, where Aleksi was the only Canadian to compete. The song explores the courage required when leaving home and venturing to new places for the first time, echoing Campagne’s personal journey as an artist. Campagne began performing alongside his mother, Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor, at the age of five, and at nineteen moved to Paris to study under jazz violin legend Didier Lockwood. By twenty-five, Campagne’s musical odyssey has led him to grace the stages of Canada’s renowned folk festivals, including the Mariposa Folk Festival, the Regina Folk Festival, Canmore Folk festival, and the Northern Lights Festival, among others.

Given the emphasis on the violin in his music, it may surprise audiences that, “I sometimes wished that I had studied a harmonic instrument, like the guitar or piano, instead of the violin when I was younger because it would have made singing and playing–my two passions–much easier,” says Campagne regarding the difficult skill of fiddle-singing, “But having grown up at folk festivals, I got to see legends like April Verch or André Brunet sing while accompanying themselves on the fiddle, so I knew it was possible. It’s really thanks to their example that I now also fiddle-sing–but in my own indie-folk way.”

“Won’t Be Scared” is structured to be as comforting to the listener as possible, evident in its heartfelt lyrics, rich acoustic guitar, and the powerful unison of voices at the song’s peak. The choir of voices singing together at the halfway mark is made up of members of Aleksi’s musical family, reinforcing the importance of togetherness and community during difficult times. As a nod to his bilingual roots, Campagne is proud to release the single in both English and French.

For The Giving was made possible through grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and FACTOR, enabling Campagne to record the album in his childhood home during the COVID pandemic. Despite the challenges posed by the health restrictions, Campagne collaborated with his band remotely, creating intricate arrangements and incorporating elements such as vocal harmonies, strings, and a whistle solo. The final recording process took place with the producer and the band living together in Aleksi’s childhood home for a month, ensuring a safe and cohesive production.

Rockers HIGHWIND’s Latest Single “At What Cost” Reveals Love’s Price Tag: Nothing Comes Free

1

Nothing comes free in life, and love is no exception. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan rockers Highwind’s newest single, “At What Cost,” explains the price of humankind’s most precious emotion.

Rich with the apathy at punk’s core, vocalist Chase Rysavy unleashes his own tribulations onto the track.

“‘At What Cost’ is a song about being with someone that makes you feel alone,” the band explained. “No matter how hard you try to grasp onto them and fix things, it always seems to be wrong.”

The single fits neatly into the larger theme of Highwind’s latest EP, “Final Words.” Rysavy’s original idea for the project was to infuse the concept of grief being the cost of love. That displays itself openly in “At What Cost,” particularly in the track’s bridge, performed intensely by drummer and unclean vocalist Troy Waggoner:

“You’re breaking my heart
My meaning is lost
If love is the prize
Then grief is the cost”

Those who put themselves out there will be crushed. It is an inevitability that grief will follow after attaching oneself to someone or something, because it will one day be taken from you. This is the cost of love.

These are the harsh realities that Highwind explores in “Final Words.” In the band’s previous single from earlier this year, “Weighing You Down,” which describes the story of a hospitalized person who feels guilty for what their health is doing to their beloved partner.

“Final Words” is not Highwind’s first project – the band self-released “Cellar Door” in 2016, a full-length that was recorded live off the floor at Regina’s Blue Door Studios and went on to be chosen as one of Sask Music’s “Best Albums of 2016” – but it was its first with lead guitarist Ehren Pfeifer. Working entirely remote from Rysavy, Waggoner, and bassist and vocalist Eric Taylor, Pfeifer recorded all his parts in Toronto having never played with the band before.

But the chemistry shines through. “Weighing You Down” has become a regular on rock stations in Regina and Saskatoon, and “Finals Words” is gaining support from the Vancouver arts community.

It’s been a long time coming for the band whichbegan with Rysavy, Taylor, and Waggoner in 2014. The trio first collaborated long distance with some time together while on university breaks in their hometown of Moose Jaw. Their initial self-release, “We’re All Alone,” came in that year. It garnered praise from Vancouver-based magazine, Permanent Rain Press, which said that “Highwind might be the best thing by far to come out of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan … the band is capable of being more than just your average punk band.”

Now nine years later, the band is ready to break out onto the next level and make a national splash in Canada’s music scene. Check out Highwind’s latest piece of art, “At What Cost” – available now.

LGBTQIA+ Christian Artist DANAH-LEE Spreads Message of Acceptance With ‘Equal’

0

Ottawa, ON Contemporary Christian artist Danah-Lee channels her faith and musical spirit to deliver a powerful message of acceptance and belonging with her ambitious new single, “Equal.”

“Equal” was inspired by a melody that came to her while teaching a piano lesson. “I stopped the lesson and took two minutes to hum the melody into my phone’s recording app,” says Danah-Lee. “Later that evening, when I had an opportunity, the lyrics and melody flowed out of me so freely.”

A beacon of positivity and hope for the LGBTQIA+ community, Danah-Lee has been a champion for equal rights, challenging conventions within her faith. “As a Christian LGBTQIA+ artist, my vision and intended outcome for this recording was to examine and break down barriers between Queers and Christians,” says Danah-Lee. With faith and love in her heart, she would further her inclusive crusade by releasing two singles, ”Love Letter To A Friend” and “Home To Myself,” which would play a large role in her ascent as an artist.

The inspiration behind “Equal” is drawn from the very real threat of danger that members of the LGBTQIA+ community continue to face daily. “The song stems from years of Queer folks being treated as second-class citizens,” says Danah-Lee.

“As a member of this community, I have countless accounts and experiences of being treated with discrimination and anti-gay behaviour. Especially, but not limited to, within the Christian music industry. We need to change the conversation and be better.”

Accompanied by warm and melodic musicianship that feels like a welcoming embrace, Danah-Lee brings the potent message into the listener’s view and holds their attention so they can’t look away.

“Oh fear, why are you hiding here
On both sides of this petty war?
Some of us are scared to come out
And they are scared at findin’ out
We bleed the same kind of red.”

It was also crucial for Danah-Lee to accompany a visual with the release of “Equal.” “Making the lyric video was important to me because it highlights what our Queer community endured throughout the decades and still endures,” says Danah-Lee.

Danah-Lee is also a producer, award-winning music educator, church music director, entrepreneur, speaker, and author. Outside of her strong faith in Christ as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and outside of her career as an artist, Danah-Lee owns and operates a safe and inclusive music school. She was recently nominated for LouderThanTheMusic’s “Christian Album of the Year” (2020) and the “Impact Award” at Ottawa’s Capital Music Awards (2021). She has released four solo and two collaboration albums and has toured extensively throughout North America.

Carla Muller’s Reflective New Release “The Last Two Years” Shines Light on Children’s Strength

0

One of the unsung heroes of the COVID pandemic was undoubtedly the children of the world, who were asked to make tremendous sacrifices for the collective good. Woolwich, ON folk artist Carla Muller understands this deeply. In her new song “The Last Two Years,” she recognizes and pays tribute to the immense strength and resilience displayed by these young souls. More of her music will be available on her upcoming album In Between, the second installment in a six-part musical odyssey.

“During these years, our kids were affected by isolation, fear and anxiety,” says Muller. “This is for them, for all of the parents, like me, who watched their children’s world get smaller and smaller as the days wore on. And of course, this is for my own kids who stayed home to protect me because of my own health issues.”

In December, Muller delighted listeners with her single “Snow Came Falling” and an accompanying album of the same name. She will be releasing her next four albums, Paper Stars, Bees Are Humming, In Spite Of Me, and Stones, over the next two years.

“My health has taken a few hits since 2020, but I’m working to overcome all of that,” Muller recalls. “Still, I kept going to my friends at Canterbury and for each new obstacle, I’d learn how to sing around it, and since I wasn’t yet getting the sounds I wanted from my voice and so many wonderful musicians were available to record, we just kept laying down tracks for me to sing to later. What started as one album turned into six.”

In “The Last Two Years,” Muller pours her heart into a musical expression of love to all the children whose lives were significantly disrupted by COVID, as well as a special dedication to her own kids who selflessly stayed home to protect her. She also speaks to the agonizing decisions so many families had to make –

I thought that the once the April rain would come
We’d all be free to live again
I was the reason that you had to stay apart
I was the one who broke your heart

“I can never repay my kids, wouldn’t even know where to start, for I have seen first-hand just how deeply their time away from friends and their own lives has affected them,” Muller says. “It came to me one day, all in a rush after a particularly heart-wrenching time with one of my girls. I’d have done anything, given anything to erase the pain that all of this has caused.”

“The Last Two Years” is out now, and In Between will be out this summer. Join Carla Muller on August 12 as she takes the stage for the second year in a row at the South Coast Jazz festival, where she will perform original songs from her upcoming collections alongside Mark Kelso.
