Fog Blues & Brass Band Delivers A Melodic Dose With ’12 Bar Prescription’

1

Fog Blues & Brass Band, the dynamic 7-piece ensemble from Kitchener, Ontario, known for their electrifying live performances, is thrilled to announce the release of their latest single, “12 Bar Prescription”, featured on the bluesy rock band’s latest EP. It captures the essence of their journey during the unprecedented challenges of the COVID pandemic and showcases their unyielding spirit and musical prowess.

“Ironically, the only tune we had pre-pandemic was this song we co-wrote with Grant Heywood (Major Hoople’s Boarding House). However, we were locked down before we could record it. “12 Bar Prescription” was one we solidified in Memphis, TN during the International Blues Challenge and playing that song live at The Rum Boogie Cafe and Alfred’s was surreal! It’s become our opening song on every show we play, so it only seemed fitting it be the title track.”

The other songs featured on Fog’s latest EP are a testament to their ability to create and collaborate through adversity due to the pandemic’s restrictions and limitations. The band members had to resort to utilizing email and file transfer services to share and exchange musical concepts, crafting demos and recording tracks individually. Some band members taught themselves recording software to keep the creative process alive as this remote collaboration continued for several months until they finally gathered again.

For this EP, the multi-talented and versatile 7-piece band from western Ontario sought to capture the raw energy and immersive experience of their live performances. To achieve this vision, they enlisted the expertise of renowned engineer Robi Banergi, whose distinguished portfolio includes working with legendary artists such as The Rolling Stones, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Etta James.

“Robi is amazing to work with! It’s a very chill environment filled with good vibes, creative ideas, and a few studio stories from the past, very interesting to say the least! We also hired Steve Skingley (Rick Emmett, Molly Johnson) to do the mastering and he’s a great guy to work with!”

FOG Blues & Brass Band burst onto the music scene with their debut album, “Into The Fog!” in 2018, which garnered much fanfare as each track from the album enjoyed extensive airplay on live radio locally and abroad. Comprised of a group of seasoned musicians, FOG’s live performances are nothing short of spectacular as their signature blend of Classic Blues, R&B, and Rock creates a captivating and invigorating experience for all audiences.

Acclaimed Toronto-Based Jazz Vocalist, Fuat Tuaç Releases His Fittingly Titled Second Album, Immigrant

0

Acclaimed Toronto-based jazz vocalist Fuat Tuaç releases his fittingly titled second album, Immigrant, out now, reflecting on his experiences as an immigrant living in the city. Fuat sings in three languages — English, French, and his native Turkish — while curating a potpourri of jazz styles that, like the artist, traverse the globe.

“Immigration is a very hot issue in the world now. People move around the world for one reason or another, even COVID could not stop them. I wanted to share my story in Canada as an immigrant,” says Fuat. “I wanted to talk about my journey in Canada. I wanted to talk about the people I’ve met along the way; my experience inside and outside the jazz world; what I anticipated from Canada and what I’ve found; how people see me and how I see them. I wanted to talk about all of this and inspire people.”

“I’d like the songs on Immigrant to speak to every person regardless of their country of origin,” Fuat says. “I think the eclectic nature of the album lends itself to that.”

I wanted to talk about my experiences as a single man dating online looking for love and intimacy in a humorous way. Online dating now has an international vernacular and its own ground rules, infraction of which will come with grave circumstances. In today’s world, post-COVID, meeting someone organically, outside internet, is almost impossible so this song speaks to most of us.

I also wanted to talk as well about how social media rules our lives in this era. We use it for so many different purposes. Apart from trying to give the impression that our lives are perfect, many people use it for purposes of spying on others. “Who’s That Man?” tells the story of a dumped lover who becomes the stalker of his ex on social media.

The English language songs also include the wistful, melancholic, but inspiring title song, “Immigrant,” and the groovy “Moss Park,” a reflection on the homelessness in a Toronto Park.

These songs were written in lockdown and recorded recently, so they are also reflective of that period. I›ve also included some songs in French and a traditional Turkish song that I revisit in the jazz style.” Fuat says.

Globetrotting and time travel through the history of jazz are fused with hip, up-to-the-minute Canadian urban poetry which is in turn inflected with Turkish street flavor in Fuat’s album. The international feel of the album, like Fuat, is expansive, taking flight and soaring, seemingly intent on visiting more destinations than an airport departure lounge.

Underpinning the entire endeavor is some rock-solid musicianship provided by Eric St-Laurent on guitar, Kevin Turcotte on trumpet, Eric West on drums, and Jordan O’Connor on double bass. Celebrated vocalist Kim Richardson duets with Fuat on “Chez Moi” and the renowned vocalist from Istanbul, Yesim Akin joins Fuat on the traditional Turkish song, echoing hymns from the Asia Minor across the ocean. The album was recorded at Kensington Studios in Toronto, but Fuat traveled to Montreal and Istanbul to record the duets.

My guitar player, Eric told me, when I first told him that I wanted to record the album with him: “You are such a natural singer, you improvise a lot on the stage and your album must be reflective of your live performances on stage. Nothing more than that. If you ever lose your voice when you are old and you can’t sing anymore, we will bring in a huge, big band to accompany you so that no one will understand that you can’t sing anymore”. Fuat says.

Fuat plays regularly around town with the same band that he has recorded the album with, so it only came naturally to him to record the album with them to capture the existing natural sound of live concerts.

Fuat has a unique pedigree, partly because the cosmopolitan singer/songwriter used to be a qualified lawyer, practicing law in Istanbul, France, and the UK before the calling to pursue jazz full time became too strong. He relocated to Montreal in 2011 to study jazz at Concordia University where he earned a degree, plying his craft in the local bars and clubs of the city. In 2017, he released his first critically acclaimed album, Late Bloomer.

BECK, BOGERT & APPICE Live In Japan 1973, Live In London 1974 Available September 15

0

Before his death in January, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck revisited concert recordings made by Beck, Bogert & Appice, the power trio he formed in 1972 with drummer/singer Carmine Appice and bassist/singer Tim Bogert. The live music captures the band at the beginning and end of its short-but-influential partnership, with two shows in Japan in 1973 and one of the group’s final performances in London a year later.

In honor of what would have been Beck’s 79th birthday this Saturday, ATCO/Rhino announces the upcoming release of the new BBA boxed set, LIVE IN JAPAN 1973, LIVE IN LONDON 1974. The collection will be available on September 15 on 4 CDs or 4 LPs. Also, a purple-vinyl version will be released the same day, available to pre-order HERE. Additionally, the music will be available from digital and streaming services. The 1974 live version of “Superstition” recorded in London is available today digitally. Listen HERE.

All three band members were involved in creating LIVE IN JAPAN 1973, LIVE IN LONDON 1974, and the collection is dedicated to Beck and Bogert, who died in 2023 and 2021, respectively. The set includes an expansive booklet with extended liner notes detailing the group’s history by music journalist/manager Bruce Pilato, along with memorabilia, archival photos, and a replica poster.

Beck and Appice mixed all the concerts in this set from the original multi-tracks that had been in Beck’s archive for almost 50 years, thus knocking the many bootleg quality releases, that Beck hated, out of the park! The two performances at Koseinenkin Hall in Osaka, Japan (recorded May 18 and 19, 1973) were released exclusively in Japan a few months after the shows, but never in the U.S. The complete concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London, England (recorded January 26, 1974) has never been released anywhere.

In the booklet, Pilato explores the short existence and lasting legacy of Beck, Bogert & Appice, a supergroup that critics once hailed as “the first successor to Cream” (Melody Maker) and an “ensemble of virtually unparalleled magnificence” (NME).

He writes: “The potential was obvious to all from the minute the three began talking about forming a group. In 1967 Beck emerged from The Yardbirds (along with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page) having launched his own critically and commercially successful band. Bogert and Appice were the lava-hot rhythm section that propelled both Vanilla Fudge and the blues-rock quartet Cactus. There had been a couple of false starts in 1969, but when Jeff recruited Tim and Carmine to help him finish off the ’72 Jeff Beck Group tour, the music community rejoiced with anticipation.”

In a 1972 interview, Beck said seeing Vanilla Fudge live impressed him. “I saw the Fudge’s potential as a group, but I didn’t see anything in common with my playing. It’s just when they were jamming, I found that Carmine had some other things going aside from the Fudge stuff, and Tim did as well. Tim is a Martian-type bass player. He plays like a Martian from Motown!”

LIVE IN JAPAN 1973 was recorded only a few weeks after Beck, Bogert & Appice’s self-titled debut came out. The music ripples with raw energy as the group delivers exhilarating live versions of nearly every song on the album, including “Superstition,” “Lady,” and “Livin’ Alone.” The trio also played songs by the Yardbirds (“Jeff’s Boogie”) and the Jeff Beck Group (“Morning Dew” and “Going Down.”)

After the band’s 1973 tour supporting its debut, Bogert told the British music press that some fans weren’t prepared for BBA’s high-energy approach. “We surprised a lot of people who were expecting laid-back music…Mainly we appeal to people who like loud, raunchy, good-time music. We’re a raunchy band and we aim to get people turned on.”

The concert on LIVE IN LONDON 1974 was recorded eight months after the shows in Japan and right before the trio disbanded. The performance introduces several songs the group planned to record for BBA’s never-completed second studio album, including “Satisfied,” “Jizz Wizz,” and “Solid Lifter.”

Half a century after the trio formed, Appice says the experience was over too soon. “It was artistically fulfilling at the time, but it was too quick…the fact that we got to play together was great. Jeff, Tim and I did play great together, but before we knew it, it had ended.”

David Sylvian Announces Samadhisound 2003–2014 Do You Know Me Now? Limited Edition 10″X10″ Box Set Featuring New Notes And Unseen Artwork

0

samadhisound and UMR are proud to announce the release of samadhisound 2003–2014 DO YOU KNOW ME NOW?, a limited edition deluxe 10”x10’ 10 CD boxset. The box is presented in a stunning slipcase and features a 100-page hardback book with previously unseen artwork and contextual essays by David Sylvian and renowned graphic designer and author Adrian Shaughnessy on the visual aesthetic of the samadhisound label.

In early 2003, having already parted ways with the Virgin label after a record 21 years, there followed a sense of both autonomy and having worked on retrospectives and remixes for the past few years, a change in direction was needed. As a result, that year Sylvian created the samadhisound label for which he claims he created his most liberated, personal and substantial work of his creative life. This newly collected 10-CD set contains the entirety of the work Sylvian produced, both solo and in collaboration, over the 11 years of the label’s existence.

The boxset has been beautifully art directed and designed by Sylvian and his partner on all the label’s projects, Chris Bigg. The slipcase features a stunning photograph by Manafon cover artist Ruud Van Empel. There is also a collaboration with artist/musician Lance Austin Olsen for the three of the CD sleeves. The production values of this release are on par with all those that Sylvian & Bigg created for the samadhisound label itself.

samadhisound 2003–2014 DO YOU KNOW ME NOW? contains all of David Sylvian’s solo albums released on his independent label, samadhisound, between 2003 and 2014, plus the albums recorded with Nine Horses, Jan Bang & Erik Honoré and Franz Wright & Christian Fennesz. The set also contains an exclusive compilation CD, “Do You Know Me Now?” featuring non-album tracks recorded with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Nine Horses.

Speaking of his time releasing music via samadhisound, Sylvian says “Although I personally maintain samadhisound is the home of my best work it was produced during a very turbulent period that precipitated some devastating changes in my life. I can’t gloss over this fact as it’s incorporated into, and informs the material in many ways. Maybe that’s why, after all this time, outside of any possible musical innovation, it remains so important to me.”

Demi Lovato Releases “Swine”

0

Demi Lovato has released “SWINE” – listen HERE – a powerful song inspired by the millions of people in the reproductive justice movement who have protested and continue to fight for the right to choose.

The song arrives ahead of the 1-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to end the constitutional right to abortion in the United States. Demi’s net profits from “SWINE” for a period of one year will be donated to the Reproductive Justice Fund at the Demi Lovato Foundation, which will in turn be directed to three non-profit organizations: NARAL Pro-Choice America, Plan C, and The National Network of Abortion Funds.

“It’s been one year since the Supreme Court’s decision to dismantle the constitutional right to a safe abortion, and although the path forward will be challenging, we must continue to be united in our fight for reproductive justice. I created ‘SWINE’ to amplify the voices of those who advocate for choice and bodily autonomy. I want this song to empower not only the birthing people of this country, but everyone who stands up for equality, to embrace their agency and fight for a world where every person’s right to make decisions about their own body is honored,” states Demi.

A resource center has been created on Demi’s website. This site includes a map in collaboration with The 19th that displays the status of abortion rights in each state at this moment, as the legal landscape is constantly changing. There are resources from Planned Parenthood – the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care for all people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education – and on topics such as how to access an abortion in your area, a hotline to dial if you need immediate support, what funds may be available for you, and how to access abortion pills. There is a space for others to tell their story, which will then be amplified by Demi or the non-profits she is working with. Lastly, there is a donate widget where all proceeds will go to the Reproductive Justice Fund at the Demi Lovato Foundation, which will in turn be directed to the aforementioned non-profits.

“Art and activism are intertwined and present a unique opportunity to challenge social norms and injustices — and inspire people to believe that a better world is possible. Artists shape the zeitgeist of our culture, so it matters when they speak up about issues such as abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and more. Planned Parenthood is most grateful to artists, like Demi Lovato, who is bold, courageous, and not afraid to speak out through their art against attacks to bodily autonomy. Demi using their platform to amplify the need for reproductive rights for all is very powerful during such a crucial time.”

– Caren Spruch, National Director, Arts & Entertainment Engagement, Planned Parenthood Federation of America

“We at Plan C believe in the power of art to help shape reality in ways that data cannot – we love to see artists channeling their outrage and passion into new creative works, and we are honored to be a part of ‘SWINE.’ Proceeds from the song will help us continue to widely share information on abortion pills by mail.”

– Amy Merrill, digital director and co-founder, Plan C

“It’s been a year since the Supreme Court took away our right to abortion, and we are still mad as hell about it. Every day, we read new horror stories about what these bans are doing to pregnant people—and every day, anti-abortion extremists try even harder to ban abortion in every state. We are fighting back, and we won’t stop until our rights are restored. And now, we have a true anthem that meets the moment of crisis we are in. There has never been a more important time to mobilize, and we’re proud to stand with allies and advocates like Demi.”

– Angela Vasquez-Giroux, Vice President of Communications and Research, NARAL Pro-Choice America
