Allison Russell Announces New Album “The Returner” And Shares New Video For Title Track

Four time GRAMMY-nominated singer, songwriter, poet, activist, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell has announced her new album, The Returner. The record will be released on September 8th, 2023 via Fantasy Records. Today, she has shared the title-track from the album. The Returner was written and co-produced by Allison along with dim star (her partner JT Nero and Drew Lindsay) and was recorded over Solstice week in December 2022 at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, CA. It features Russell’s “Rainbow Coalition” band of all female musicians along with special guest appearances from the legendary Wendy & Lisa, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and Hozier.

Allison Russell on The Returner: “My goal with The Returner – sonically, poetically, and spiritually – is a radical reclamation of the present tense, a real time union of body, mind, and soul. This album is a much deeper articulation of rhythm, groove, and syncopation. Groove as it heralds the self back into the body, groove as it celebrates sensual and sexual agency and flowering, groove as an urgent call to action and political activism.

“In just a word, it’s funkier. But as is the history of anything funky, it’s never just a party. It is a multiverse of energies that merges the celebration and the battle cry. For while an embrace of the present tense is a celebration, it is equally an unquestioning leap into battle – cultural, political, environmental.”

Since the release of her debut solo LP two years ago Outside Child, Russell’s often devastating, deeply moving, cathartic celebration of survivor’s joy has become one of the most acclaimed albums of the past 10 years. Now comes the second chapter in herstory, The Returner, a body-shaking, mind-expanding, soulful expression of liberation, love, and self-respect that serves as a fierce declaration of joy for all survivors that have made it to the other side. Allison, JT, and Drew built The Returner from the bottom up with a rhythm-first, genre-fluid approach. The improvisational energy of great female artists sparked the album’s fierce joy, and provided a wider canvas for Allison’s immense, unlimited talent. In all, the new album doesn’t just deliver on the promise of the last two years, it exceeds all reasonable (and unreasonable) expectations and affirms Allison Russell’s place among music’s most vital artists⎯and The Returner, as one of 2023’s most essential recordings.

Allison Russell has spent her career in multiple bands, including Po’ Girl, Our Native Daughters, and Birds of Chicago. After a career spent as a gifted multi-instrumentalist, backing numerous other artists, she finally dared to release her solo project in 2021. “It’s an album of strength and affirmation, not victimization,” said The New York Times in their profile on Russell and Outside Child. Following the album’s release, Russell performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ellen, Late Night With Stephen Colbert, CBS Saturday Morning, Austin City Limits, The Kelly Clarkson Show made her Opry debut and appeared at the Country Music Hall of Fame and performed at the 2022 GRAMMY’s Premiere Ceremony.

The accolades for Russell have been immense. In addition to her four GRAMMY nominations, she has earned three 2022 Americana Award nominations and a win for Album of the Year, two International Folk Music Award wins, a 2022 JUNO Award nomination for ‘Songwriter of the Year,’ and her first-ever JUNO Award win for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Russell received two 2021 Americana Awards nominations, won three Canadian Folk Music Awards, two UK Americana Music Awards, and more. She was recently nominated for Song of the Year and Artist of the Year for the 2023 Americana Awards. In addition, Russell has consistently used her newfound platform to elevate, educate and inspire; curating the history making Once And Future Sounds: Roots and Revolution set for the Newport Folk Festival in 2021 and mobilizing this year’s triumphant Love Rising All-Star benefit concert in support of LGBTQIA+ causes in Nashville – raising over $550,000 and calling national attention to Tennessee’s dangerous anti/trans and anti/drag laws. Russell has also announced a book deal with Flatiron/MacMillan for her debut novel, a memoir based on her life and the material that inspired Outside Child and The Returner.

Allison Russell will be on tour throughout the summer and fall in support of The Returner including two nights next week spent at The Gorge Amphitheatre supporting Joni Mitchell’s performance. She was also a part of the band for Mitchell’s historic Newport Folk Festival 2022 return. Queens Of The Stone Age Announce ‘The End Is Nero’ North American Tour

After a triumphant return on the battlegrounds of Boston Calling and Sonic Temple, Queens of the Stone Age have announced the details of their North American tour, which will kick off on August 3rd in Sterling Heights, MI. General on-sale begins Friday June 9th, 10am local time. The east coast leg of the tour will feature support from Phantogram and The Armed. Viagra Boys and Jehnny Beth will support on the mid-west and west coast dates.

The End Is Nero tour is an invitation from Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Michael Shuman, Dean Fertita and Jon Theodore to come celebrate the end of the world, which we hear is “in a month or two.” They would like to encourage the obscene and the clean, the outcasts and the weirdos, and anyone and everyone in between to attend, this is where you belong. Leave your judgment at the door, bring anything and everything else.

In Times New Roman… will be available digitally and physically on June 16th via Matador Records. On the eve of release fans are invited to ring in the long awaited album at MIDNIGHT CLUB parties taking place at record shops and pubs across 23 countries. The MIDNIGHT CLUB starts at 11pm June 15th and will feature giveaways, exclusive merch including limited edition colored vinyl, and—in a few select locations—signed merchandise and ticket giveaways. Tool Announce North American Tour

TOOL return to the road this Fall, expanding on their recently announced festival appearances (Power Trip, Aftershock and Louder Than Life) with a six-week, North American tour.

The newly announced dates mark TOOL’s first Canadian shows since 2019, with multiple cities seeing their first concerts from the Los Angeles-based band in several years.

Tickets are on-sale this Friday, June 9 at 10 am local. Pre-sale tickets are available exclusively via TOOL’s fan club, TOOL Army, on June 8 at 10 am local. A limited number of VIP packages, including premium tickets, soundcheck access, exclusive merchandise and more, will be offered to TOOL Army members simultaneously, with remaining options available to the general public as the on-sale begins on June 9.

Since the 2019 release of the TOOL’s critically-acclaimed album, Fear Inoculum, the band has won a GRAMMY Award® (Best Metal Performance for “7empest”), completed sold-out tours of both the U.S. and Europe, and headlined Bonnaroo, Welcome to Rockville and the Sonic Temple Arts & Music Festival. TOOL marked the 30th anniversary of the Opiate EP with the 2022 release of “Opiate2,” a re-imagining of the EP’s title track, released in tandem with a breathtaking 10-minute short film crafted by Adam Jones and visual artist Dominic Hailstone (“Alien: Covenant”, “The Eel”).

City and Colour Announces Fall US Tour In Support Of Critically Acclaimed ‘The Love Still Held Me Near’ Album

City and Colour — celebrated singer/songwriter Dallas Green — has announced a fall US tour in support of his critically acclaimed new album The Love Still Held Me Near (Still Records, an imprint of Dine Alone Records). Following the highly successful Northeast/Midwest run in May that included multiple sold-out performances, City and Colour will hit the West Coast and Southern states in late August and September. The tour will kick off on August 29th in Denver, CO, with stops that include Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles, Austin, Memphis, Charleston, SC and Atlanta. See full list of tour dates below.

Produced by Green and longtime band member and collaborator Matt Kelly, The Love Still Held Me Near was met with high praise from the press following its release in March. Features and positive coverage ran in a wide range of US outlets, such as Alternative Press, New York Magazine, American Songwriter, No Depression, Relix, Magnet and much more, including a story at Rolling Stone.

The Love Still Held Me Near was born out of the most difficult period in Green’s life, including the tragic loss of his best friend in 2019. Green explains, “It’s about digging deep down into yourself and attempting to unearth hope and light in the things that can comfort you through those times. For me that has always been writing and recording music, so that’s exactly what I did.” The depth of Green’s emotions are thoughtfully articulated through these songs in ways that make them so relatable. He continues to solidify the connection with his audience on his seventh album. When you experience a City and Colour performance, that feeling is palpable as fans sing along through the set, including the new songs.

Halsey And Suga Of BTS Join Forces For “Lilith (Diablo IV Anthem)”

Today, GRAMMY-nominated, multi-platinum, genre-bending artist Halsey and SUGA of 21st century pop icons BTS unleashed the official music video for “Lilith (Diablo IV Anthem)” in collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo IV. Directed by Henry Hobson, the video was shot in multiple locations including inside Chapelle des Jésuites (Jesuits’ Chapel) in Cambrai, France, where Blizzard had filled the ceiling with paintings and a 160-foot mural inspired by the game.

Like the High Heavens and Burning Hells, Halsey needed a counterpart to accompany them on the fiery track and help tame their commanding power. Cue SUGA, a longtime collaborator and friend, who makes his way through the haze and effortlessly spits bars at the halfway mark.

“I’m thrilled that I got to collab with SUGA of BTS on a reimagined version of “Lilith” for the Diablo IV anthem! Having spent countless hours in Sanctuary with my family, I’m here as both a fan and a collaborator,” said Halsey. “Plus, I’ve always wanted to do a concept with SUGA with this type of dark mythology, Hopefully, fans of Diablo, SUGA and myself will love Lilith’s embrace.”

The first 20 seconds of the music video premiered at the epic Diablo IV launch event at Vibiana in Downtown Los Angeles on May 31. All hell broke loose as attendees, including fellow Diablo IV collaborators like Gottmik (RuPaul’s Drag Race) and special guests Offset (Rapper), Tinashe (Singer), David Harbour (Actor, Stranger Things), Khleo Thomas (Actor and Gamer), and others danced the night away to a DJ set by Zedd while themed visuals were cast on the walls inside the landmark cathedral.

ASIA Issues 2 LP Vinyl Re-Release Edition Of 2008’s ‘Phoenix’ Reunion Album

BMG Music has released the legendary ASIA studio album Phoenix with a highly collectible double vinyl edition, available today, May 26th. Asia are the multi-platinum selling English rock band who formed in 1981 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2021. Their 1982 self-titled debut album reached number one in several countries, including nine weeks topping the US charts, with lead single ‘Heat Of The Moment’ making the top 40 in over a dozen, including US #4.

Pooling the talents of John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes and Steve Howe, ASIA immediately became the epitome of a supergroup of rock aristocracy and the natural heir to its members’ legendary bands of the 70s – King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Buggles and Yes.

Leaving behind their progressive roots, ASIA embraced the commercial FM rock sound and took the new MTV video channel, by storm. Heat Of The Moment was a world-wide monster smash and their 1982 debut album spent 9 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. Asia became the biggest selling album of the year and world tour dates sold out.  A second album, Alpha, was released in 1983, when the band began a period of personnel changes before eventually breaking up.

Twenty three years later, the four original members reconvened in 2006 for a sold out world tour. In 2008, the album Phoenix followed to critical acclaim and the delight of its still very loyal fan base. Phoenix album (previously unreleased on LP) was the band’s first studio album with its original line-up. In terms of sound, this emotionally compelling comeback album saw Asia continue the very high standards from where they left off in 1985. As in the past, it displays suppleness stretching out into multi-part suites while retaining a knack for big, arena pop hooks.

The members came together again to record Omega in 2010 and XXX in 2012. Steve Howe stepped back from ASIA to concentrate on his work with YES and was absent for 2014’s Gravitas. Following this tour came the news of John Wetton’s treatment for cancer, a fight he sadly lost in 2017.

Wolfie’s Blended Scotch Whisky (40% ABV) is wonderfully balanced with flavours of warming cinnamon, fresh vanilla and baked apple. The whisky has a delicate taste of sweet peat and pears in syrup before finishing with candied citrus peels and a gentle oak spice.

Referencing the opening track from Rod’s 1991 album Vagabond Heart, the lyrics ‘Rhythm of My Heart’ are emblazoned on the base of the bottle. Rod’s recording of the song was a nod to his own Scottish heritage having adapted the melody from the traditional folk song, Loch Lomond.

Wolfie’s will be available to buy online for £35 from Monday 19 June and in the meantime fans are encouraged to sign up at www.wolfiesiscoming.com to gain access to an exclusive presale from Friday 16 June. They’ll also be in with the chance of finding one of 1,000 bottles of Wolfie’s that have been signed by Rod.

With the initial limited run of bottles marked as first releases, Wolfie’s will initially be available to buy online across the UK and in Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. It will also launch in America in July as Rod embarks on his North American tour.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, The Beach Boys’ magnum opus, Pet Sounds, changed the notion of what an album could be when released in May 1966, forever altering the course of popular music. Breaking away from the surf rock that made them global stars, The Beach Boys’ 11th album in just four years couldn’t have been more different than what came before, especially the acoustic rave-up, Beach Boys’ Party!, featuring their smash hit “Barbara Ann,” that preceded it by only a few months. Influenced by The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound production, creative visionary Brian Wilson took a left turn from their standard formula of upbeat songs about girls, surfing and the Southern California lifestyle and sought to create what he called “a complete statement.” In turn he produced an album like nothing before, one that revolutionized modern music by venturing into uncharted musical territory, both in composition and production, employing innovative recording techniques and pioneering the use of the studio as an instrument. Across 13 exquisite tracks, Pet Sounds pushed the boundaries of sonic experimentation, introducing a rich tapestry of complex, orchestral arrangements, unconventional instrumentation like Theremin and Coca-Cola bottles for percussion, flawless, trademark harmonies by Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and new addition Bruce Johnston, and deep, introspective lyrics that went beyond anything the group had ever sung about. The record influenced The Beatles and their longtime producer George Martin to push the creative envelope when making their groundbreaking album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts, and paved the path for countless generations of musicians and producers. Today it remains one of the most pivotal and beloved albums ever made.

Now, for the very first time, fans can experience this iconic album like never before as Pet Sounds has received a revelatory new mix in Dolby Atmos®, an immersive sound experience, by renowned, multiple GRAMMY®-winning producer Giles Martin. Martin, the son of famed Beatles producer George Martin, has led the way in this pioneering audio technology, having helmed critically acclaimed Dolby Atmos mixes for the recent spate of Beatles special edition and anniversary releases, including 2022’s universally hailed Revolver. In order to create this new listening experience, Martin, who was personally asked by The Beach Boys to mix Pet Sounds, was given access to the original analog tapes and built the enveloping and enthralling new mix from the ground up using Brian Wilson’s original 1966 mono mix and Mark Linett’s subsequent 1997 stereo mix as guides. The new Dolby Atmos mix retains the feel of the classic album but offers a fresh perspective, putting  listeners  in the center of the music while revealing details with unparalleled clarity and depth. Pet Sounds is available to stream on Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, and Tidal via Capitol/UMe as of today, June 2.

Nearly six decades since its original May 16, 1966 release, Pet Sounds remains a masterpiece of modern music that has reigned at the top of countless critic and fan polls, maintaining its timeless rank as one of popular music’s most-cited influences. More than 100 domestic and international publications and journalists have lauded Pet Sounds as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. In 1995, Pet Sounds topped MOJO magazine’s list of “The Greatest Albums of All Time” at No. 1, and in 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it at No. 2 on the magazine’s oft-cited list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time,” exclaiming, “With its vivid orchestration, lyrical ambition, elegant pacing, and thematic coherence, Pet Sounds invented — and in several senses, perfected — the notion that an album could be more than the sum of its parts.

With the new Dolby Atmos mix, longtime fans, as well as those just discovering the genius of The Beach Boys, are invited to revisit Pet Sounds and experience this sonic masterwork with a new level of immersion, clarity and detail, connecting listeners more deeply to the music they love.
