Verve Records & UME Launch Yearlong Celebration Of Nina Simone’s 90th Birthday

0

Commemorating a milestone year for one of music’s most revered trailblazers, today Verve Records/UMe/Universal Music Canada announce a yearlong celebration of Nina Simone on what would have been her 90th birthday. The “Happy Birthday, Miss Simone” campaign invites the world to celebrate Simone’s renowned career and lasting impact across music, fashion, and more. Highlights of the campaign include the first-ever official video for her timeless classic, “I Put a Spell on You,” a new greatest hits album, stunning, immersive Dolby Atmos mixes of her entire UMG catalog, an audiophile grade vinyl pressing of Wild Is The Wind, and much more to be announced throughout 2023.

“Happy Birthday, Miss Simone” launches with the release of Great Women of Song: Nina Simone, a collection of Simone’s most beloved hits. From “Feeling Good” to “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” the 12-track album features the very best of Simone’s catalog, and is an essential curation for both her newest fans and most devoted listeners. The set is the first release of Verve’s “Great Women of Song” series, which will highlight the works of storied musicians in Verve’s catalog including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and more. Great Women of Song: Nina Simone is now available digitally and on CD and will be released on vinyl May 12.

Accompanying the campaign launch is the first official music video for Simone’s classic “I Put A Spell on You.” Throughout her career, the pioneer utilized fashion as a tool of self expression, favoring bold looks for both the stage and her everyday life. Celebrating some of the culturally significant looks worn by Miss Simone, the video serves as a visual reminder that her personal style was as fearless and uncompromising as her music.

This June, Verve/Universal will release You’ve Got to Learn, a previously unreleased live album recorded at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. Across a six-song set, including the title song and “Mississippi Goddam,” Simone leaves the listener as entranced as the festival audience, whose fervent applause was rewarded with a show-stopping encore. The Newport Jazz Festival was a special place for Simone, and this previously-unknown recording is a tremendous showcase of her commanding power onstage.

The “Happy Birthday, Miss Simone” campaign will allow listeners to experience Simone’s work like never before. Beginning today, Simone’s entire UMG catalog is available to stream in immersive Dolby Atmos spatial audio. For the superfan, a Mastercut Edition of I Put a Spell on You is now available, in a very limited run. In August, Verve/UMe/Universal Music Canada’s acclaimed audiophile vinyl reissues series, Acoustic Sounds, will celebrate Simone’s 90th with an audiophile grade pressing of her 1966 studio album, Wild Is The Wind. One of the most exceptional albums of her career, Wild is The Wind, like all Acoustic Sounds titles, will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and mastered from the original analog tapes.

In October, all seven of Simone’s 1960’s Philips albums will be brought together in one LP collection. Four Women: The Nina Simone Complete Recordings 1964-1967 includes the seven albums Simone recorded for the Philips label between 1964 and 1967 in one of the most significant periods of her career.

BMG is proud to announce a new catalogue recordings agreement bringing the acclaimed solo recorded works of George Harrison to Dark Horse Records/BMG together with his music publishing catalogue for the first time ever, under one roof, solely at BMG. In celebration of Harrison’s 80th birthday, Dark Horse/BMG have released his entire catalogue in Dolby Atmos surround sound exclusively on Apple Music.

Harrison’s recorded catalogue features 12 studio albums of solo works including his debut Wonderwall Music (soundtrack to the film Wonderwall), the US and UK chart-topping critically acclaimed, 7x Platinum-certified triple album All Things Must Pass featuring the Number One single ‘My Sweet Lord’, ‘What Is Life’, ‘Isn’t It A Pity’, ‘All Things Must Pass’; and the US Number One Living In The Material World featuring the Number One single ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’, through the Platinum-certified Cloud Nine featuring his Number One charting cover of ‘Got My Mind Set On You’, to his final studio album Brainwashed featuring the Grammy award-winning ‘Marwa Blues’.

The catalogue also includes the live double album Live In Japan, featuring Eric Clapton; four compilations Let It Roll – Songs by George Harrison, Early Takes Vol 1, The Apple Years 1968-1975, and The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992.

Previously in 2022, BMG announced it had entered into a global publishing agreement with the George Harrison Estate to administer the Harrisongs catalog comprising more than 200 songs written with the Beatles, the Traveling Wilburys and Harrison’s solo career.

The partnership expands on the relationship with Harrison’s legendary Dark Horse Records as the boutique music company with BMG serving as its global partner and infrastructure across recorded music, music publishing, and merchandise, while developing further areas of business.

Harrisongs Limited, the music publishing entity created by Harrison, contains his nearly two dozen songs written with the Beatles including the band’s most popular song on streaming services, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, as well as ‘I Me Mine’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, and the US Number One single ‘Something’, his songs from the two albums recorded by supergroup The Traveling Wilburys featuring ‘End of the Line’, ‘Handle with Care’, ‘She’s My Baby’, and ‘Inside Out’, as well as the 12 studio albums of solo works.

Dhani Harrison said, “22 years since his passing, for what would have been his 80th birthday, I am overjoyed to announce that we are bringing my father’s music catalogue back home to Dark Horse Records, the company he started back in 1974. We look forward to releasing only the finest of packages and hope the fans join us on the deepest of dives into our archives as we continue to grow his legacy through our partnership with BMG, starting with the release of his entire back catalog in Spatial Audio, for the first time, on Apple Music. We also will be using this opportunity to make all the custom limited vinyl that we can get away with. Happy 80th Dad!!! We love you always.”

BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said, “This is a banner day for BMG, bringing together for the first time the song and recorded rights of one of the greatest musicians in popular music history under one roof. Only BMG can do this. We look forward to working with the George Harrison Estate and Dark Horse Records to promote George’s peerless music to generations old and new.”

Thomas Scherer, BMG President, Repertoire & Marketing, New York and Los Angeles, said, “For years we have had an amazing partnership with Dhani and David that continues to grow to this day. What began as working with Dhani on his own albums and publishing, to the re-launch and expansion of the Dark Horse Records business, together we believe in providing white glove service for artists, globally, with enormous opportunities to grow. We are proud to bring all of George Harrison’s music together, under one roof, and are very grateful for Olivia and Dhani’s trust in BMG.”

In 2020, BMG announced it had entered into a multi-faceted global partnership with Dark Horse Records, which was founded by George Harrison in 1974 as a place for his solo work and a home for supporting other artists, and now led by Dhani Harrison and David Zonshine.

The agreement initially brought catalogue releases from the acclaimed record label and Harrison’s Indian label imprint HariSongs, as well as Joe Strummer’s solo works, including The Mescaleros. Recent Dark Horse Records releases include the newest recordings from Billy Idol Cage, The Roadside and Happy Holidays with upcoming releases including, Benmont Tench’s much-anticipated new studio album, 16 albums from Leon Russell’s recorded catalogue spanning 1984 – 2013, Deep Purple’s Jon Lord, and a global publishing administration deal for Joe Strummer’s solo publishing catalogue featuring hundreds of songs including all three Mescaleros albums, his scoring contributions, as well as the sixth and final Clash album Cut The Crap.

Dark Horse and BMG’s partnership has expanded to include DH Merchandise, a one stop-shop offering creative design through fulfilment, including the launch of new merchandise stores for George Harrison, Joe Strummer, Johnny Ramone, and additional partnerships with Traveling Wilburys, Elizabeth Taylor, Leon Russell and Buddy Holly; as well as the introduction of the Dark Horse Sounds wellness music series.

While Dark Horse Records/BMG administers the music publishing of George Harrison, it will now also serve as his label home.

Jack Johnson Announces In Between Dub Remix Album To Release On June 2

0

Multi-platinum musician Jack Johnson announces new album, In Between Dub, featuring a remix collection of some of Johnson’s most beloved recordings from his over two decade long career, but with a dub twist. In Between Dub will be available on all streaming platforms and select retailers on June 2, 2023 through Brushfire/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada. Lead track, “Traffic In The Sky”, one of two new Lee “Scratch” Perry dub remixes, is out today on all streaming platforms.

In Between Dub, a three-year creation, began after Jack reached out to famed reggae pioneer Lee “Scratch” Perry in early 2020 to produce a dub remix album. After a year-long pandemic pause, Lee “Scratch” Perry began working on several tracks, crafting original music and mixes from his studio in Jamaica. Lee “Scratch” Perry sent the sketches over to Jack in Hawaii and together they connected to collaborate on a direction.

“Growing up in Hawai’i with reggae music always on the radio, Lee “Scratch” Perry was a living Legend. When I found out he was up for remixing a few of my songs I was blown away. The remixes evolved and he ended up adding his voice to my songs. It was like he had done a magic trick to the music. I will be forever grateful for the time, love, and energy that Lee “Scratch” Perry put into this project.”

On August 29, 2021, the project was suddenly brought to another halt as Lee “Scratch” Perry departed this physical world. In 2022 Jack and Subatomic Sound System, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s band of the last decade, connected directly and discovered they had all the pieces to bring Lee “Scratch” Perry’s creation to completion.

In Between Dub features two new Lee “Scratch” Perry dubs, plus a Subatomic Sound System dub with vocals from Lee “Scratch” Perry, along with dub remixes by Scientist, Dennis Bovell, Nightmares On Wax, Mad Professor, Yaadcore and Monk.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s creativity has resulted in some of the most startling and original sounds ever to emerge from Jamaica, and the uniqueness of his vision has found resonance in music forms around the world. He was involved in every style on the island from the pre-ska era to the “golden age” of reggae at the end of the 70s, until a personal metamorphosis saw him shifting focus from a record producer to a recording and performing artist engaging with the spoken word, collaborating with a range of practitioners, and developing a practice as a painter, sculptor and performance artist. Later projects continued to be marked by the individualism that always set his material apart, and his trajectory was motivated by a burning desire to create unique and inspiring music and art in a ceaseless effort to venerate the Almighty, a savior Perry perpetually sought to serve through his art. Bob Marley, Max Romeo, The Clash, Beastie Boys are a few of the noteworthy to benefit from his magic. ~David Katz

Multi-platinum GRAMMY-nominated musician and environmentalist, Jack Johnson has released eight studio albums and two live albums that have sold over 25 million copies worldwide. His Brushfire Records label and touring crew have been leaders in the greening of the music industry and his All At Once social action network connects fans with local non-profits at each tour stop. Jack, with his wife Kim, founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support environmental education in Hawaii’s schools and communities, as well as the Johnson Ohana Foundation to support environmental, art and music education worldwide. Proceeds from these albums and tour profits, along with Johnson’s personal charitable activities, have resulted in over $37 million donated to charity since 2001.

IN BETWEEN DUB TRACK LISTING:
“Traffic In The Sky” (Lee “Scratch” Perry)
“Wasting Time” (Subatomic Sound System)
“No Other Way” (Dennis Bovell)
“Times Like These” (Lee “Scratch” Perry)
“Calm Down” (Dennis Bovell)
“Better Together” (Nightmares On Wax)
“One Step Ahead” (Scientist)
“Breakdown” (Nightmares On Wax)
“Turn Your Love” (Mad Professor)
“You Can’t Control It” (Yaadcore)
“It’s All Underground” (Monk)

Melanie Martinez Is Reborn With Enigmatic Trailer Heralding Long-awaited New Album, Portals

0

With over 12 billion global streams, 4 billion official YouTube views, more than 53 million followers across social media platforms, and 27 million videos posted on socials using her music, Melanie Martinez reemerges with a spellbinding new trailer heralding the arrival of her hugely anticipated new album, PORTALS, arriving via Atlantic Records on Friday, March 31st. Pre-orders are available now HERE.

Martinez lifted the curtain on PORTALS earlier this week with an instantly viral TikTok video confirming the death of her notorious alter-ego “Cry Baby,” last seen considering whether to walk into the light at the beguiling conclusion of 2019’s internationally acclaimed full-length film, K-12. Today’s exclusive trailer – directed by Martinez now sees the appearance of a mysterious egg from which an enigmatic figure emerges.

PORTALS marks the 27-year-old NYC-born singer-songwriter-filmmaker’s first full-length release in nearly four years following her 2 billion-streaming, RIAA Gold-certified second album, K-12, which proved a sensation upon its September 2019 release, entering the Billboard 200 at #3 – Martinez’s highest chart placement thus far – with further debuts at #1 on the Alternative album chart, and #1 on the Soundtrack album chart.

Hailed by Forbes as “a perfect conceptual album in the streaming age,” K-12 also serves as a soundtrack companion to an eerily enchanting musical film. written, directed, and starring Martinez, now with over 104M views to date via YouTube alone HERE. Praised by Billboard as “a visual dream world of the 24-year-old’s own making… a whimsical, highly dramatized version of school life, filled with pastels, magic, oversized hair bows and baby doll dresses,” K-12 was the 6th highest grossing film in the US on the day of its September 3, 2019 theatrical release, with one-night-only screenings in over 425 cinemas in 32 countries.

Named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30 2021,” Martinez has brought her idiosyncratic vision to an array of diverse enterprises, including last year’s instantly sold-out collaboration with footwear brand Koi. In addition to her myriad musical and visual efforts, Martinez has also shown herself to be an unforgettable live performer via sold-out headline shows and festival performances around the planet. A number of hugely anticipated festival appearances are currently set though the next month, including Lollapalooza Argentina (March 18), Lollapalooza Chile (March 19), Bogota, Columbia’s Estéreo Picnic (March 23), and Lollapalooza Brazil (March 25). A wide-ranging international live schedule will be announced soon.

Martinez truly set forth on what has proven a remarkable creative journey with her 2015 debut album, CRY BABY. An unforgettable collection of provocative alt-pop framed as a modern fairy tale, complete with storybook illustrations and a dramatic structure that takes listeners through the life of its title character, the album instantly affirmed the multi-talented Martinez as an irrefutable artistic icon, thanks in part to a phenomenally popular series of hit singles and imaginative self-directed visuals that have amassed 6 billion total streams and 1.5 billion video views.

Named by SPIN as one of 2015’s top albums, CRY BABY made its Billboard 200 debut at #6 upon its initial release while also entering the “Top Alternative Albums” chart at #1. In addition to its own 2x RIAA Platinum certification, all of the album’s 13 original tracks – as well as three further songs featured on the CRY BABY (DELUXE EDITION) – have now been certified Gold or Platinum by the RIAA.

CRY BABY took on a stunning second life in 2020 when the longtime fan-favorite “Play Date“ – featured on the album’s Deluxe Edition – exploded into a true alt-pop sensation with millions of user-generated videos across TikTok. Now boasting over 1B worldwide streams along with 2x RIAA Platinum certification, “Play Date” propelled CRY BABY back onto the upper half of the Billboard 200 more than five years after its initial release. Billboard honored Martinez’s historic achievement, hailing her “committed aesthetic” while noting, “Instead of relying on hooks designed for Top 40, Martinez has found an audience by combining dark alt-pop, vulnerable storytelling and a penchant for striking audio-visual ideas…The fact that (CRY BABY) has persisted on the albums chart following its August 2015 release is a testament to the connection Martinez has developed with her listeners.”

Formed under K-pop powerhouse JYP Entertainment in 2015, TWICE – comprised of members Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, Tzuyu – is one of the best-selling K-pop girl groups of all time. Since their debut, the group has sold over 10 million albums, received nearly 6 billion streams on Spotify, performed on programs such as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and GMA3, and has been nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards. In March 2023, they will be honored with the “Breakthrough Artist” award at the Billboard Women in Music Awards.

The group first rose to prominence with their debut title song “Like OOH-AHH” and 2016 breakthrough single “CHEER UP,” which went on to top multiple Korean pop charts and won ‘Song of the Year’ at the Melon Music Awards and Mnet Asian Music Awards. From 2016 to 2019, the group releases a slew of mini albums and hit singles, as well as their first full-length album, Twicetagram, and successfully completed their first world tour, TWICELIGHTS. In 2020, TWICE made their first ranking on the Artist 100 and Billboard 200 lists with their mini album MORE & MORE, and their second full-length album, Eyes wide open, debuted at #8 on Billboard’s World Albums chart.

The momentum continued through 2021 where they kicked off the year with a performance on TIME100 Talks followed by their first U.S. broadcast debut on The Kelly Clarkson Show. That June, they released their 10th mini album, Taste of Love, and followed this up with the release of their first full English-language single, “The Feels,” which earned the group their first career entry on The Billboard Hot 100 (#83) and multiple top 10 placements across various charts. TWICE closed out the year with the release of their third full-length album Formula of Love: O+T=<3, which hit #3 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for eight consecutive weeks.

Last year, TWICE completed their sold-out 4TH WORLD TOUR Ⅲ arena tour and back-to-back, sold-out encore performances at Los Angeles’ Banc of California Stadium. These performances were a major milestone for the group, as made TWICE the first female K-Pop group to sell out two North American arena tours, as well as the first female K-Pop group to play a North American stadium. In August, they released their 11th EP, BETWEEN 1&2, which entered the Billboard 200 Album Chart at #3 and holds the biggest pure sales week for an album by a female K-Pop act in the US, further extending TWICE’s record for the most top 10 debuts on the chart among all K-Pop female acts. BETWEEN 1&2’s lead single “Talk that Talk” reached the top 20 on Billboard’s Global 200 chart, and top 10 on Billboard’s Global Excl. US chart, tying with “The Feels” as their highest charting single on the latter chart. They ended the year as the most-stream female K-Pop group on Spotify.

Most recently, TWICE released their second full English-language single, “MOONLIGHT SUNRISE” off their forthcoming EP READY TO BE. The track debuted at #84 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned TWICE career high-placements on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart (#3) and both Spotify’s US Chart (#39) and Global Chart (#60).
