Songwriters Hall of Fame Unveils “The Power of Song: A Songwriters Hall of Fame Exhibit”

0

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has unveiled its expanded traveling exhibit “The Power of Song: A Songwriters Hall of Fame Exhibit,” which will be on display at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles now through September 4, 2023.

Curated by the museum in partnership with SHOF, the exhibit illuminates the art of songwriting, celebrating the creative work and legacy of inductees into the Hall of Fame, and other renowned songwriters who have received the esteemed Johnny Mercer Award and Hal David Starlight Award presented to gifted young songwriters.

The exhibit marked its debut in June 2022 at CUNY Graduate Center in New York, where it was on display for a month. Due to its success and a mass of support from across the music industry, the Songwriters Hall of Fame Board of Directors greenlit the continued collaboration to significantly broaden the scope for the launch in Los Angeles at the GRAMMY Museum.

Expansive wall murals and educational panels showcase a songwriting history timeline from 1828 to the present, as well as explain the business of songwriting and showcase all the Hall of Fame inductees and special award winners. A SHOF Original Film and several interactive displays examine the creative process in interviews with inductees Jimmy Jam, Toby Keith, Carole King, Alan Menken, Smokey Robinson, Carole Bayer Sager, Don Schlitz, and Diane Warren.

Visitors to “The Power of Song: A Songwriters Hall of Fame Exhibit” can get a rare glimpse at hundreds of never-before-seen artifacts related to popular songs that make up the American music treasury. Although there are far too many items to detail, highlights include the following:

The exhibit features masterworks created by some of the world’s most prolific songwriters, including the original handwritten lyrics, scores, or sheet music for Diane Warren’s song “How Do I Live,” Mariah Carey’s “Fly Like A Bird,” Steve Miller’s “Fly Like An Eagle,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel’s “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” Steve Dorff’s “Murphy Brown TV Theme” and “Cowboys and Clowns,” Desmond Child’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “Born To Be My Baby,” Will Jennings and Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven,” Annie Lennox’s “Sweet Dreams [Are Made of This],” Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Walk On By,“ and Jimmy Webb’s “Wichita Lineman.” It also includes: Alan Menken’s production notes for “Little Shop of Horrors” and spotting notes with musical cues for the “The Little Mermaid”; Billy Steinberg’s lyrics for “True Colors,” “Like A Virgin,” and “Eternal Flame”; Tom Petty’s lyrics for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “Into the Great White Open”; Alan and Marilyn Bergman’s lyrics for “Papa Can You Hear Me”; and a multitude of other items from the iconic Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, Jackie DeShannon, Lamont Dozier, Gerry Goffin, Holly Knight, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, Carole Bayer Sager, James Taylor, Allee Willis, Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds, and Taylor Swift among many others.

Instruments on display include legendary lyricist Sammy Cahn’s typewriter, Irving Berlin’s transposing upright piano, Stevie Wonder’s harmonica, Bill Wither’s acoustic guitar, Jimmy Jam’s keytar and Terry Lewis’ bass guitar and drum machine, John Mellencamp and Tom Petty’s acoustic guitars, Allee Willis’ Casio keyboard, Benny Blanco’s keyboard, Halsey’s acoustic guitar, Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White And Blue” guitar, and more.

Historic photos of hitmakers from decades of SHOF induction and awards galas are on display, along with many of their personal artifacts, such as: an extensive array of SHOF founder Johnny Mercer’s memorabilia; Paul Williams’ Best Original Song Academy Award for “Evergreen (Love Theme from ‘A Star Is Born’)”; Jimmy Webb’s cherished copy of “The Complete Rhyming Dictionary”; Billy Steinberg’s cassette demo of “True Colors”; a number of Henry Mancini’s GRAMMYs, including the award for Song of the Year for “Moon River” (which he co-wrote with Johnny Mercer for Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and many more. There are also notable red-carpet outfits and signature clothing items featured that have been worn by SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers, Annie Lennox, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, Allee Willis, John Legend, Ne-Yo, and others.

The GRAMMY Museum is open from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (Monday, Tues., Wed., Thurs, Fri., and Sunday), and 10:00 am – 6 pm on Saturdays. It is closed on Tuesdays. Wanna Watch Kate Bush and David Gilmour Perform ‘Running Up That Hill’ Back In 1987? Of Course You Do!

1

In 1987, Kate Bush released a charity single called “Don’t Give Up” in support of the UK charity Crisis. The song was originally recorded by Peter Gabriel and Kate, but for the single release, David Gilmour replaced Peter’s vocals. David provided backing vocals and played guitar on the track, which featured Kate as the lead vocalist.

That same year, during The Secret Policeman’s Third Ball Live in 1987, Kate performed her hit song song “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” with the David on guitar and backing vocals.

Nigerian-Born, Ottawa, ON-Based Hip-Hop Artist Banggz Medicates His Pain With “Placebo Effect”

1

Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for dealing with their personal pain. Even if they aren’t necessarily considered healthy to some people, you can’t blame someone for wanting to feel something other than pain for a little while. Lagos, Nigeria-born, Ottawa, ON-based hip-hop artist Banggz puts his vices on full display in his new single “Placebo Effect”.

The song opens with an electronic sounding hip-hop beat before Banggz comes in with the song’s witty chorus, which describes leaning on a lover to make his pain easier to deal with.

“Okay okay the Gemini Gem just Began again
Okay okay tryna find balance in between the pain
Okay okay she hit my line just to show me love again
Okay she took things just to open up again
I feel great already”

Although the song’s chorus makes it seem like the lover is an actual person, the lover could also be interpreted as Banggz’ passion for music. Music artists, especially music artists of color, are often expected to mine their personal pain in order to make it in the music industry. This is emphasized through the song’s music video.

As the music video progresses, Banggz performs the song, and his t-shirt gradually becomes soaked in blood. Through the collaborative vision of Banggz and filmmaker Tani Olorunyomi, this music video represents a remarkable response to the human condition and the industry’s insatiable thirst for exploiting artists for their commercial value.

In fact, it would be all too easy to pass off this song as generic due to the suggestive lyrics. However, the commercialism of the song’s lyrics and a hint of electric guitar at the song’s end belies a depth that is explored in the song’s accompanying music video.

With a great appreciation for hip-hop, Banggz draws influence from genres and styles from his birthplace, resulting in a diverse and relatable sound. A natural storyteller, Banggz has the ability to paint scenes through his lyrics, conveying emotions and experiences that his listeners can connect with.

In a past single, “What A Day”, he explores comradery and celebration, while another single “telephone” features a message to his future self. His most recent project is “ttyl”, a 9-track project that explores anxiety.

Folk-Rocker Kele Fleming Serves Up Futuristic Film Noir in Remastered Single “Carrier Hotel”

1

Victoria, BC-based folk-rocker Kele Fleming connects two separate concepts with the same name to examine humans’ relationships to technology in her newly remastered, cyberpunk-tinged single “Carrier Hotel.”

But first: a ‘carrier hotel’ is a facility where servers and other computing equipment owned by multiple enterprises share space (although each company’s equipment is physically secured in its own space). The concept, obviously, takes its name from the long-established model of a hotel. And, of course, hotels are often places of secrets and intrigue, a break from the humdrum of everyday – a place for one-night stands, affairs, being on the lam, or simply cloaking oneself in a shroud of incognito and anonymity.

In “Carrier Hotel,” which blends traditional folk-pop with synthwave, darkwave, and cyberpunk all in the same song, Fleming imagines the carrier hotel as a setting in a hard-boiled detective story. “It’s about shifting identity in the ‘cloud’ and becoming someone else for convenience and fantasy,” she explains. In other words, the sort of stuff people do on the Internet every day, but Fleming makes it sexy and futuristic film-noir:

from streetlight to streetlight
wind your way down Front Street
you dodge the net sweepers
squeeze through a choke point
you carry a message close to your heart
you carry a message close to your heart

The juxtaposition of the folk elements with the electronic elements allows for a further marrying of the two concepts, and Fleming serves up dark, swirling atmosphere overlaid by a cleverly deceptive sunniness. “At the carrier hotel/ You can kiss but we won’t tell,” she sings. “At the carrier hotel/ We’re all a little closer to hell/ At the carrier hotel.”

Cowritten with longtime collaborator Ron Yamauchi, “Carrier Hotel” initially appeared on Fleming’s 2016 album No Static, and this version is the 2023 remaster. A corresponding music video with John Flatman as videographer depicts a lone, anonymous female backpacker getting into an Uber and wandering a city, finally settling on a hotel for the night.

The song is meant to explore the realities of reality itself, as well as anonymity and image management on the Internet. “We have no secrets in the networked world,” Fleming observes. “There is a data echo for every move you make. A digital artifact for every facet of your identity, every crumb, that you leave in the fibre optic pathways.”

She provides further food for thought: “Identity and how the Internet and social media give people the ability to become shapeshifters and become someone else – if you’re shaping your identity through a make-believe world, are you really connected to, and present in, your real world?”

Since the pandemic, Victoria’s folk-rock artist Kele Fleming has been collaborating with DJs and, as a result, her music has taken an unexpected change in direction. Her original songs are intelligent, conscious, and often challenging, documenting her thoughts on the environment, society, and politics. With Neko Case’s tenacity and Lucinda Williams’ grit, Kele Fleming’s songs are now fused with electronic beats for an extremely unique sound. A proud member of the LGBTQ2A community as well as an older woman in the music industry, Fleming’s presence in today’s music scene is an important one in making it a more diverse and inclusive space.

Alternative R&B Super Producer/Artist Chin Injeti Celebrates Love In New Single “Expensive” feat. Jarrel The Young

0

They say that loving someone romantically comes with a cost, but most of the time that cost can be worth it. When you really love your partner, you are willing to spare almost anything to make them happy. Chin Injeti embodies this feeling in his new alternative R&B single, “Expensive” feat. Jarrel The Young.

Synth pop guitar grooves open the song and give it an almost trippy vibe. It channels the feel-good vibes of Grace Jones’ 1987 song “Crush”, which has a somewhat similar feeling of relishing the thrill of love. After Injeti’s sonorous vocals sing the first verse, the song’s pre-chorus kicks in and pushes the song to an exciting height.

“It’s expensive
But I’m obsessive
Oh when push comes to shove
I deserve it.”

Of the song’s inspiration, Injeti states, “Expensive is a song that was inspired by 80s synth pop and forward-thinking artists from this era, that weren’t necessarily in the mainstream. The main inspirations were David Bowie, Ultravox and Grace Jones and is about celebrating the decadence of Love and all it comes with.”

In fact, the pattern of the verse, pre-chorus, and hook combined with Injeti’s vocals, and the production encourages the listener to lose themselves in the music. Like Grace Jones’ “Crush”, it knows that love can give you an epic rush and wants the listener to savor this feeling.

Injeti states that this drunk sappy feeling shared in that song is intentional in the production. “The visuals and song were created in my studio using real hardware and analog tape and drum machines to recreate the same feeling of a record from 1984.”

Born in Hyderabad, India and having to survive polio from birth, music therapy treatments helped facilitate his motor skills — ultimately changing his life. His path towards the craft became clearer when Injeti teamed up with then-partner DJ Khalil with whom he made multi-GRAMMY and JUNO Award-winning music with and for the likes of Dr Dre, Eminem, Drake, Pink, Aloe Blacc, The Clipse, Lecrae, K’Naan, and more.

Getting his official start in an in-home studio built by his father and brother, he also fronted the JUNO and Much Music Video Award-winning band Bass is Base, won SOCAN’s Songwriter of the Year Award, and enjoyed years of creating, touring and performing with the likes of The Fugees, The Roots, Jamiroquai, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and more.

“Expensive” is the newest release in a slew of singles that have included “Yuh”, “For The Love of Life”, and “Sparrow”, among others.
