Despite The Success, Alexis Lynn Still Has “Something To Prove” In New Single

0

As a proud feminist and mental health advocate, Vancouver/Surrey, BC’s First Nation singer-songwriter Alexis Lynn knows too well that no matter how strong, empowered, and aware one may be, it’s still difficult to fight against entrenched systemic pressure – especially in the form of internalized insecurities. Sometimes, though, acknowledging that battle is the first step toward winning it.

In her new single, “Something to Prove,” the rising-star pop artist explores the personal struggle she’s experienced as a bisexual woman, one who’s very open and accepting of her sexuality outwardly but on the inside, still suffering from the biases of the mainstream, especially when it comes to the male gaze.

“Patriarchal society holds this value that the validation of a woman, being it attractiveness, worth, whatever, can often only come from a man,” Alexis explains.

In the achingly open, stripped-back single, Alexis’ lyrics discuss engaging in a romance with a woman who checks every box for what she knows she wants in a relationship yet still feeling the need for male approval to prove she’s “enough” (even though the man she’s involved with is falling far short of meeting her needs).

“I know that she sees me. He’s just willingly blind … I just need him to want me, like there’s something to prove,” she sings, highlighting her internal conflict and unhappiness at her own inability to shake off this male-validation complex.

“It’s messed up, really, but I think it shines a light on what a lot of bisexual women have struggled with,” she says of the song, and of the experience no doubt shared by many longing to break through toxic patterns and processes to find and accept the healthy relationships they deserve.

As the lyrics state, “There’s so much left to unlearn, ‘cause I thought love was something you should earn.”

The British Columbia, First Nations artist has become known in recent years for her ability to combine her distinctive, honey-sweet vocals and pop production with authentic and sometimes raw storytelling. She takes inspiration from her family’s cultural roots, along with icons including Amy Winehouse and Rihanna, and the worlds of R&B and hip-hop. Her debut album, Real Talk, centered around her personal mental health journey and experiences processing trauma, was released in September, 2022.

With “Something to Prove,” Alexis delivers another dose of frank, relatable truth-telling in a radio-ready package.

Folk/Roots Group Rusty Creek Dedicate New Single and Video “Bombs Away” To Ukraine

0

Music has always been a form of artistic expression. It can also be used as a tool to bring focus to events that can impact us and the world we live in. Rusty Creek’s newly released single – “Bombs Away” which is available now, does exactly that.

You can hear the smooth country blues vocals of lead singer Alex Deeth narrating a story of what it’s like for the innocent people who have been affected by the evils of war. “This song was originally written back in the 1980s”, Deeth explains. “I was writing about the bombing of Britain during WWII. But eventually, the Vietnam War, The Iraq War, Afghanistan War and then Syria and now the disgusting Russian War against the Ukraine. So, the song unfortunately becomes a song for the ages. The song is an anti-war song.”

Through his powerful yet melodic tone, the Victoria, BC native narrates the chorus:

“So what did the kid say to his Sister.
Why did the man say Bombs Away.
And can you remember why the whole thing started.
Why did the man say Bombs Away…Bombs away.”

In their newly released single, “Bombs Away”, the band begins by telling us a story of the harsh reality of what the emotional state is like for the innocent people dealing with the aftermath of war by saying, “Sifting through the ruins of a burned-out town. Looks like they’ve levelled it down. There was a store and there was a steeple. Looks like they took all the people.”

You can find “Bombs Away” on Rusty Creek’s latest album, “The Road of Life,” released in June of 2022.

The band was formed in 2015 with Alex Deeth (vocals/songwriter) and Peter Callaway (guitar/banjo/vocals) but later turned into a four-piece band after adding Lee Stephens (bassist) and Leonard Saidman (drummer). They describe their music as “a mixture of bluegrass, country blues, western swing, Cajun, and anything else we can think of.” The talented foursome draws from a wide range of influences that, in their hands, sound completely original and yet warmly familiar.

The “Happy Birthday, Miss Simone” campaign invites the world to celebrate Simone’s renowned career and lasting impact across music, fashion, and more. Highlights of the campaign include the first-ever official video for her timeless classic, “I Put a Spell on You,” a new greatest hits album, stunning, immersive Dolby Atmos mixes of her entire UMG catalog, an audiophile grade vinyl pressing of Wild Is The Wind, and much more to be announced throughout 2023.

“Happy Birthday, Miss Simone” launches with the release of Great Women of Song: Nina Simone, a collection of Simone’s most beloved hits. From “Feeling Good” to “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” the 12-track album features the very best of Simone’s catalog, and is an essential curation for both her newest fans and most devoted listeners. The set is the first release of Verve’s “Great Women of Song” series, which will highlight the works of storied musicians in Verve’s catalog including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and more. Great Women of Song: Nina Simone is now available digitally and on CD and will be released on vinyl May 12.

Accompanying the campaign launch is the first official music video for Simone’s classic “I Put A Spell on You.” Throughout her career, the pioneer utilized fashion as a tool of self expression, favoring bold looks for both the stage and her everyday life. Celebrating some of the culturally significant looks worn by Miss Simone, the video serves as a visual reminder that her personal style was as fearless and uncompromising as her music.

This June, Verve/Universal will release You’ve Got to Learn, a previously unreleased live album recorded at the 1966 Newport Jazz Festival. Across a six-song set, including the title song and “Mississippi Goddam,” Simone leaves the listener as entranced as the festival audience, whose fervent applause was rewarded with a show-stopping encore. In October, all seven of Simone’s 1960’s Philips albums will be brought together in one LP collection. Harrison’s recorded catalogue features 12 studio albums of solo works including his debut Wonderwall Music (soundtrack to the film Wonderwall), the US and UK chart-topping critically acclaimed, 7x Platinum-certified triple album All Things Must Pass featuring the Number One single ‘My Sweet Lord’, ‘What Is Life’, ‘Isn’t It A Pity’, ‘All Things Must Pass’; and the US Number One Living In The Material World featuring the Number One single ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’, through the Platinum-certified Cloud Nine featuring his Number One charting cover of ‘Got My Mind Set On You’, to his final studio album Brainwashed featuring the Grammy award-winning ‘Marwa Blues’.

Previously in 2022, BMG announced it had entered into a global publishing agreement with the George Harrison Estate to administer the Harrisongs catalog comprising more than 200 songs written with the Beatles, the Traveling Wilburys and Harrison’s solo career.

The partnership expands on the relationship with Harrison’s legendary Dark Horse Records as the boutique music company with BMG serving as its global partner and infrastructure across recorded music, music publishing, and merchandise, while developing further areas of business.

Harrisongs Limited, the music publishing entity created by Harrison, contains his nearly two dozen songs written with the Beatles including the band’s most popular song on streaming services, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, as well as ‘I Me Mine’, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, and the US Number One single ‘Something’, his songs from the two albums recorded by supergroup The Traveling Wilburys featuring ‘End of the Line’, ‘Handle with Care’, ‘She’s My Baby’, and ‘Inside Out’, as well as the 12 studio albums of solo works.

Dhani Harrison said, “22 years since his passing, for what would have been his 80th birthday, I am overjoyed to announce that we are bringing my father’s music catalogue back home to Dark Horse Records, the company he started back in 1974. We look forward to releasing only the finest of packages and hope the fans join us on the deepest of dives into our archives as we continue to grow his legacy through our partnership with BMG, starting with the release of his entire back catalog in Spatial Audio, for the first time, on Apple Music. We also will be using this opportunity to make all the custom limited vinyl that we can get away with. Happy 80th Dad!!! We love you always.”

BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said, “This is a banner day for BMG, bringing together for the first time the song and recorded rights of one of the greatest musicians in popular music history under one roof. Only BMG can do this. We look forward to working with the George Harrison Estate and Dark Horse Records to promote George’s peerless music to generations old and new.”

Thomas Scherer, BMG President, Repertoire & Marketing, New York and Los Angeles, said, “For years we have had an amazing partnership with Dhani and David that continues to grow to this day. What began as working with Dhani on his own albums and publishing, to the re-launch and expansion of the Dark Horse Records business, together we believe in providing white glove service for artists, globally, with enormous opportunities to grow. We are proud to bring all of George Harrison’s music together, under one roof, and are very grateful for Olivia and Dhani’s trust in BMG.”

In 2020, BMG announced it had entered into a multi-faceted global partnership with Dark Horse Records, which was founded by George Harrison in 1974 as a place for his solo work and a home for supporting other artists, and now led by Dhani Harrison and David Zonshine.

The agreement initially brought catalogue releases from the acclaimed record label and Harrison’s Indian label imprint HariSongs, as well as Joe Strummer’s solo works, including The Mescaleros. Recent Dark Horse Records releases include the newest recordings from Billy Idol Cage, The Roadside and Happy Holidays with upcoming releases including, Benmont Tench’s much-anticipated new studio album, 16 albums from Leon Russell’s recorded catalogue spanning 1984 – 2013, Deep Purple’s Jon Lord, and a global publishing administration deal for Joe Strummer’s solo publishing catalogue featuring hundreds of songs including all three Mescaleros albums, his scoring contributions, as well as the sixth and final Clash album Cut The Crap.

Dark Horse and BMG’s partnership has expanded to include DH Merchandise, a one stop-shop offering creative design through fulfilment, including the launch of new merchandise stores for George Harrison, Joe Strummer, Johnny Ramone, and additional partnerships with Traveling Wilburys, Elizabeth Taylor, Leon Russell and Buddy Holly; as well as the introduction of the Dark Horse Sounds wellness music series.
