 ‘Phaedra’ is one of Tangerine Dream’s most successful and acclaimed albums and this limited edition 5CD/Blu-ray box set is a deep-dive celebration of one of the most important and pioneering electronic albums of all time.

To be released on 18th April, ‘Phaedra 50th Anniversary Edition’ is a six-disc 50th anniversary boxed set featuring a remastered original album mix, along with two discs of out-takes from the recording sessions. The complete concert at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in June 1974 (the band’s debut live appearance in the UK) and a Blu-ray disc featuring Steven Wilson’s 5.1 Surround Sound mix. The box also features an illustrated book with a new essay by Tangerine Dream authority Wouter Bessels.

 Originally released by Virgin Records in February 1974, ‘Phaedra’ spent 15 weeks on the UK charts upon its release. Recorded at The Manor studios in November 1973, it was the band’s first album for Virgin and vitally, it was the first record in which they used a sequencer. This is seen as the moment the band created their signature sound, and this development in their music production would go on to have a huge impact and influence on electronic music to this day and had a fundamental effect on ‘Kosmische Musik’ – a term coined by Tangerine Dream founding member Edgar Froese which came into regular use before ‘krautrock’ and was preferred by some German artists. 

‘Phaedra’s groundbreaking use of synthesizers and sequencers created a lush and immersive soundscape that was unlike anything else at the time. Its success came from word-of-mouth and self discovery, despite the record receiving no radio play support upon its original release, it integrated itself into cultural society and helped to popularise the concept of electronic music as an art form and showed that it could be just as, if not more so, complex and sophisticated than any other forms of music.

Gibson Partners with Johnny Marr to Create 20 Gibson ’84 Les Paul Standard Guitars

In celebration of Gibson Garage Fest, a series of events commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Gibson Garage London, Gibson has partnered with the world-renowned musician Johnny Marr to release 20 hand-signed Gibson Les Paul guitars for charity, based on the iconic Les Paul Standard he played in The Smiths.

The Gibson ’84 Les Paul Standard with Bigsby signed by Johnny Marr will be available exclusively at the Gibson Garage London starting at 11 am on Friday, February 21, until they are sold out. All profits from the sale of the instruments will be donated by Johnny Marr and Gibson to support the Teenage Cancer Trust.

These Made to Measure guitars are inspired by Johnny Marr’s Les Paul Standard from 1984, first played by Marr during the recording of The Smiths’ iconic second album, Meat is Murder. The model became Johnny’s go-to guitar and was used extensively in both live performances and recording sessions with The Smiths, as well as during his time as a member of The The, The Pretenders, The Cribs, as well as his work with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Marr says: “These guitars are a faithful reproduction of my beloved 1984 Gibson Les Paul, bought in Manchester back in the day. It’s the guitar I’ve kept and used since that time on loads of different records, so I was beyond delighted to see it recreated in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. It’s an amazing organization that I’ve had an association with for about ten years. It’s a privilege to be involved in this good cause and I’m very glad to be affiliated with it, especially when it involves making a fantastic Les Paul.”

Alongside the hand-signed Johnny Marr guitars, an exclusive collaborative range of Teenage Cancer Trust and Gibson merchandise will also be available. Limited edition t-shirts, hoodies, and caps featuring a newly created design by Jamie Hewlett to celebrate the 25th year of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall will be available at the Gibson Garage London, Gibson.com, and shop.teenagecancertrust.org—with proceeds from each item sold donated directly to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Elvis Costello’s This Year’s Model released in 1978, was a battle cry of new wave, a manifesto of punk’s snarl, and a power-pop masterclass. But behind its manic energy and relentless hooks lie secrets that even the most devoted Costello fans may not know. Pump  it up, because we’re about to dive deep into five fascinating facts about this landmark album.

1. The Infamous Off-Center Album Cover Was a Deliberate Middle Finger

Most artists dream of a perfect album cover—crisp, aligned, and polished. Not Elvis Costello. The original UK pressing of This Year’s Model featured a deliberately off-center sleeve, making the title appear as “His Year’s Model” and cropping Costello’s name into “Lvis Costello.” It wasn’t a printing error—it was a calculated statement. Designed by the legendary Barney Bubbles, the cover was meant to disrupt expectations, forcing record buyers to do a double take. The misaligned print also symbolized the jagged, restless energy of the music itself. When the album was released in America, the artwork was realigned, but in true Costello fashion, the UK got the edgier, more provocative version.

2. “Pump It Up” Wasn’t an Anthem—It Was a Satire of Excess

At first listen, Pump It Up sounds like an adrenaline-fueled party song, with its relentless bassline and frantic energy. But Costello, ever the subversive storyteller, was making fun of that very lifestyle. Written during the infamous Stiffs Live Tour—where sex, drugs, and rock & roll ran wild—Pump It Up was Costello’s response to watching hedonism consume people around him. The song’s frenetic pace and tight groove only amplify its irony, capturing the sound of excess while mocking it at the same time. And the music video? A twitchy, manic Costello bouncing on his toes, as if physically embodying the song’s critique of overindulgence.

3. “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” Was Written in a Haunted Office

Costello wrote the scathing Chelsea while working as a computer programmer. Late one night, he sneaked his guitar into the office and penned the song in complete solitude—except for the eerie hum of computers and the distant flicker of a coffee machine. The inspiration? Childhood trips to London’s Chelsea district and the flood of Swinging Sixties nostalgia that followed. Musically, the song pulls from the Who’s I Can’t Explain and the Kinks’ All Day and All of the Night, but bassist Bruce Thomas’s hypnotic groove gave it a completely new dimension. Costello later admitted that he had no idea the song would become one of his defining anthems—it was just a way to pass time in a job he hated.

4. Steve Nieve’s Organ Sound Wasn’t Just Out of Tune—It Was Evil

Steve Nieve’s sinister organ playing on This Year’s Model wasn’t a happy accident. Costello specifically wanted the organ to sound “thin” and “evil.” Using a deliberately out-of-tune Vox Continental, Nieve crafted a sound that was sharp, unsettling, and unlike anything else in punk or new wave at the time. The eerie, jagged tones added a layer of paranoia and urgency to tracks like Pump It Up and Lipstick Vogue. That unmistakable keyboard sound became a signature of the Attractions and a defining element of the album’s claustrophobic tension.

5. The Album Almost Didn’t Include One of Its Best Songs

American fans of This Year’s Model might not realize they got a different version than the UK audience. The original UK release included the politically charged Night Rally and Chelsea, but when the album was issued in the U.S., Columbia Records insisted on swapping them out for Radio Radio, a song Costello famously performed on Saturday Night Live in 1977 in direct defiance of NBC’s producers. The move ultimately worked in Costello’s favor—Radio Radio became one of his most celebrated songs. However, die-hard fans argue that removing Night Rally altered the album’s dark undertones, making the American version just a little less sinister.

This Year’s Model is a snarling, spitting, meticulously crafted masterpiece that changed the landscape of music forever. With its off-kilter artwork, satirical songwriting, haunted origins, and groundbreaking sound, it continues to resonate decades later. Elvis Costello didn’t just make an album—he built a time bomb, and 46 years later, it’s still ticking.

Gearing up for what promises to be an unforgettable creative season, GRAMMY-nominated global Afrobeats popstar Ayra Starr shares a new single entitled “All The Love” out now. It notably marks her first release of 2025 and sets the stage for more to come soon.

Natural percussion sets the tempo for the track. Ayra Starr transfixes with a fluid cadence, alternately leaning into the beat and flaunting her range during the anthemic chorus. It culminates on a plea straight from the heart. Once again, the song illuminates her impressive penchant for genre fusion, merging Afrobeats, pop, and R&B all spiked with a sultry sense of soul.

In other big news, Ayra Starr just made history as “the first Nigerian female artist to receive a RIAA Latin Diamond certification” in recognition of her 2024 smash “Santa” with Rvssian and Rauw Alejandro.
