Now, the Extended Cut featuring six previously unreleased performances will be available exclusively in cinemas to audiences worldwide.

With the release of her sophomore album Happier Than Ever debuting at No. 1 in the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and in 19 countries across the globe, the 20-year-old Los Angeles native remains one of the biggest stars to emerge in the 21st century. Since the release of her debut single “ocean eyes” in 2015, Eilish continues to shatter the ceiling of music with her genre-defying sound. Fast forward from her humble breakout, her album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in the U.S as well as 17 additional countries around the world upon release in 2019 and was the most streamed album of that year. Both albums were critically acclaimed worldwide and were written, produced and recorded entirely by Billie Eilish and brother FINNEAS. Billie Eilish has made history as the youngest artist to receive nominations and win in all the major categories at the 62nd GRAMMY® Awards, receiving an award for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Album, and is also the youngest artist to write and record an official James Bond theme song, “No Time To Die,” which won an Academy Award for Best Song this year. Billie Eilish is currently on her sold-out arena world tour.

Moore Ave’s Cover Of Sublime’s “Santeria” Out Now

0

It’s difficult to make a cover sound like a unique production that does justice to its origins, but Moore Ave have done just that with “Santeria.”

The 1997 Sublime hit has transcended generations and continued as a valuable tune in the cultural zeitgeist. Aylmer, Ontario’s Moore Ave put their own indie punk spin on the track as part of its upcoming debut album, “Turn Around.”

Bringing another level of energy and intensity to a track that’s traditionally performed in a more laid back, campfire-y sort of tone adds another layer to the lyrics of the song, which center around a man’s feelings toward his lover and the man she’s cheating on him with.

The idea to put this cover on the album came while Moore Ave were sitting around a fire, a very appropriate setting to discuss “Santeria.” The success of the band’s singles “Beanies And Plaid Jackets” and “6 Feet” had its members – brothers Josh, Joe, and Jack Gaudette and brother-in-punk Shawn MacDonald – excited to take the next step. But what should it be?

“At that time, all the songs we were playing together were released, and Josh had a solid collection of partially written tunes just waiting around for us to tackle,” the band said. “As the night went on and Josh was showing everyone demos of some new tunes, Shawn stopped the conversation and suggested we write and release our first full-length album.

“This was never something we would have ever entertained before for whatever reason,” the band continued. “We thought the single game was what we were playing now just being an indie punk band from a small farm town in Ontario.”

That night, the band decided an album was in its future. The musicians elected to include one cover on the project, and “Santeria” was the quick favorite.

Moore Ave’s cover of the Sublime creation kicks off the countdown for the release of the band’s debut album and provides a taste of what’s to come from its original music. In this take on “Santeria,” Moore Ave pushes the tempo and blends the words of the legendary band with the aura of an early-2000s pop punk aesthetic. Considering the band’s named influences of NOFX, Alexisonfire, Rancid, Sum 41, and Blink-182, plus their reputation for high-octane live performances, it only makes sense. In fact, Alexisonfire has had a direct impact on the production of this project.

During the pandemic, Josh Gaudette took the liberty of sending some demos to Wade McNeil of Alexisonfire on a whim, taking a shot in the dark at his favorite band might find his work to be interesting. Shortly after, McNeil got back to him with positive comments, and the relationship began.

Over the summer of 2021, McNeil set Moore Ave up with a studio and an engineer, and now more than two years and plenty of mixing and mastering later, it’s nearly time for the album’s release.

Keep an eye out for Moore Ave.’s album “Turn Around” in the spring of 2023 and enjoy the band’s cover of Sublime’s “Santeria” – available now.

Lady Charles Channels The ‘70s In Stripped-Down Cover of Sparklesaurus’ “Flower Boy”

0

Synth explorer, producer extraordinaire, and versatile vocalist Lady Charles, revisited “Flower Boy,” a retro ode from the retired band, Sparklesaurus. “Flower Boy” falls into listeners’ laps roughly a month after Lady Charles’ single release, “Noella (Can’t Get Enough of You),” an artsy descent into internal fondness.

Lady Charles noted they produced the original “Flower Boy,” along with close friend Fliss, or Felicity DeCarle, who composed and concocted the wistful lyrics.

“I was bored one night and decided to check out a local showcase because one of the artists, Sparklesaurus, had an intriguing name. I was instantly impressed with their retro-flavoured musicality and the songwriter Fliss’ compositions,” they said.

Blown away with initial impressions, Lady Charles asked Sparklesaurus for permission to produce their debut album. The band responded with an enthusiastic yes, and although the troupe no longer remains intact, Lady Charles and Fliss kept in contact.

A few years later, Lady Charles decided to revisit life-altering tunes from musical acts, drawing inspiration from Sparklesaurus’ “Flower Boy” resting in the top spot.

“Flower boy, what are you dancing to?
I hear nothing, no rhythm, no blues
Ride me high, I crave the thrill
In a couple of days I’ll be down, you know I will.”

Lady Charles’ voice floats into the first verse as opposed to Sparklesaurus’ deep, driving, synth-rippled vocals. Lady Charles allows the vocals to meander through the song, building up toward a satisfying electric guitar and drum riff, paying off in the second quarter of the track.

“I decided to strip the verses back to their barest form and then have the verses burst forth into a full-band arrangement. I decided to draw from a bunch of different classic rock influences,” Lady Charles beamed.

They shared that some of the most influential sonics sprouted from Elton John’s booming symphonics, Kate Bush’s otherworldly orchestral arrangements, and Pink Floyd’s ethereal synth dances.

“I wanted to take the 1970’s influences already present in the song and push them to their extreme,” Lady Charles shared. From the distinct guitars to the jacket Lady Charles’ wears in the accompanying music video, they drive home fleeting atmosphere of the soundscapes.

Along with a drive to attain an immaculate vibe, a cryptic undercurrent weaves throughout Flower Boy as an allusion to a plant lovers’ paradise.

“This is a vacation from everything we hated
Flower boy, flower boy, flower boy
Now I hear your music, the song we’re dancing to
Flower boy, flower boy, flower boy.”

“I find there’s a dark sensuality to Flower Boy that recalls poppies or devil’s trumpet – beautiful yet dangerous. I kept those plants in the back of my head while working on the arrangement and I think the dark, distant synths really grew from that floral undertone,” Lady Charles mentioned.

Lady Charles’ reimagined “Flower Boy” is out now.

JUNO Award Winner / Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductee Shirley Eikhard Passes Away At Age 67

0

Shirley Eikhard, writer of the Grammy-Award winning “Something To Talk About” as well as a two-time JUNO and multi-BMI Award winner and inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame, has died. She passed away at the Orangeville Hospital surrounded by wonderfully caring staff and dear friends at age 67.

Born in Sackville, New Brunswick, Eikhard loved her Canadian roots and over the past 43 years, has travelled the world both as a performer and writer.

Eikhard’s songs have been covered by the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Cher, Anne Murray, and Ginette Reno to name but a few of the incredible artists who have enjoyed success with Eikhard’s writing and she had written well over 500 songs to date.

Raitt’s recording of Eikhard’s composition “Something to Talk About” proved a spectacular success. The single, off Raitt’s Luck of the Draw album, peaked on Billboard’s Hot 100 and adult contemporary charts at #5 in October 1991, and at No. 8 on Cashbox. It placed even higher in Canada, at #3 on the RPM Top 100 chart and #4 adult contemporary and made the top 20 on RPM’s 1991 year-end chart.

At home in Canada, “Something to Talk About” also earned Eikhard a JUNO nomination as songwriter of the year, and later SOCAN Classics and BMI awards for its status as a radio favourite heard still to this day.

Shirley was a veteran musician who plays various instruments including guitar, piano, bass, drums, percussion, chromatic harmonica and sax. Over the past decade, she added dobro, banjo, and mandolin to the mix. She loved a challenge and picking up a new instrument helps shape her songwriting skills and kept her inspiration flowing. Her last nine CDs, including her most recent On My Way To You from 2021, were completely performed and sung by Shirley in her home studio.

Shirley’s songs have appeared in numerous international films and television shows and among them, she sung theme songs for two movies, “The Domino Principle” and “The Passion Of Ayn Rand” featuring Oscar-award winning Helen Mirren.

My Next Read: “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” by Rick Rubin

0

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, as he has thought deeply about where creativity comes from and where it doesn’t, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world. Creativity has a place in everyone’s life, and everyone can make that place larger. In fact, there are few more important responsibilities.

From the legendary music producer, a master at helping people connect with the wellsprings of their creativity, comes a beautifully crafted book many years in the making that offers that same deep wisdom to all of us.

I set out to write a book about what to do to make a great work of art. Instead, it revealed itself to be a book on how to be,” says Rick Rubin.

The Creative Act is a beautiful and generous course of study that illuminates the path of the artist as a road we all can follow. It distills the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime’s work into a luminous reading experience that puts the power to create moments—and lifetimes—of exhilaration and transcendence within closer reach for all of us.

Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Rüfüs Du Sol to Headline Osheaga

0

The 16th edition of the OSHEAGA Music and Arts Festival presented by Bell in collaboration with Coors Light is set to be a massive celebration with some of the top performers in music. From August 4 to 6, Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau on Île Sainte-Hélène will be the epicentre of live music bliss, as the headliners of Canada’s favourite music festival take the stage on a gorgeous island located in the middle of the mighty St. Lawrence River for 3 days of excitement, discovery and delight.

The OSHEAGA team is thrilled to unveil the headliners for the summer of 2023: Australian visionaries RÜFÜS DU SOL, global superstar Billie Eilish, and rap royalty Kendrick Lamar.

RÜFÜS DU SOL are no strangers to Montreal, having built a deep and meaningful relationship with fans in this city over the years – notably in 2019, when their set on OSHEAGA’s Green Stage was one of the most talked-about performances of the entire festival. This Australian group is known for their incredibly rich live show, which is lush with sonic layers, over-the-top trippy visuals, and undeniable underlying big beats. The trio absolutely blew audiences away with their concerts in Montreal and Toronto this past summer, and they are nominated for two Grammys at next year’s ceremony: Best Dance/Electronic Recording (for their single “On My Knees”) and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album (for last year’s “Surrender”). Anyone who hasn’t seen them before should make it an absolute priority this summer, and those that know, know. We’ll see you there on Friday!

Billie Eilish returns to OSHEAGA after a breakthrough performance at the Valley Stage in 2018 that was a total revelation for everyone in attendance. She has one of those rare voices that can literally stop people in their tracks, regardless of age or generation. She is timeless and yet completely of the moment, and OSHEAGA has been supporting her since the early days, when she performed as a newcomer at the fest in 2018. Since then, Billie’s arresting vocals, intimate lyrics, and forward-leaning sonic production have made her one of the most popular and enigmatic artists of her generation; she’s the youngest performer in history to have won the top four Grammy Awards (Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year in 2020). She also left a huge impact on Montreal when she sold out the Corona Theatre in 2018 and Place Bell in June 2019. Fans eagerly await her next visit to our city… and she will finally return this summer to totally enrapture her legion of admirers on Saturday night.

Having headlined the festival in 2015 to an adoring crowd, in what is largely considered one of the most amazing headline sets OSHEAGA has ever seen, hip-hop legend Kendrick Lamar is known worldwide as one of the most brilliant rappers of all time. Possessing razor-sharp lyrical prowess, and an acrobatic ability to deliver them with spitfire precision, he stuns audiences every time he performs, either solo or backed by his super tight band of musicians. The rap god was recently honoured with 8 nominations for the 2023 Grammy Awards for his critically acclaimed album, Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, and he will certainly blow fans away when he hits the stage to close out the festival on Sunday!

Umbe B Captivates Listeners With Chilling Storytelling In Cut-Throat “Confiesale”

0

An all too familiar tale, Umbe B delivers a fiery retelling of a toxic love triangle, battling with internal impulses while trying to act with self-preservation. Dramatic storytelling is paired perfectly with hard-hitting string swells and perfectly timed breakdowns to create an all-encompassing visual novella, “Confiesale.”

Named by several publications throughout Latin and North America as the Latin King Of The North, Umbe B upholds his record of dropping absolute bangers with the release of “Confiesale.” In addition to a seemingly perfect track record, Umbe B’s doubles down on his ability to allure listeners with infectious breakbeat Latin drums and enticing melodic movements.

“Confiesale” describes the ups and downs of a heated love affair – from the swelling feelings of passionate love to the dread associated with getting caught and worse, losing a partner forever despite never really having them. This dichotomy is represented perfectly within lines such as “when I pull your hair that brings the devil out of me” stood next to “I am packing a 40 in case he is spying on us.”

A trailblazer in his own right, Umbe B has been producing Latin bangers since 2013, right around the time that the American embargo on Cuba was lifted. Mainstream artists started leaning more into the Latin genre, looking for Cuban and Spanish features to accentuate a borrowed style. More honorable efforts were made by J Balvin and Rosalia, capturing what it meant to be a proud Latin musician instead of producing one-offs to appeal to a demographic within a listening base.

Latin music has had a tremendous impact on pop culture for decades – baseball, television, music, and cuisine. There is hardly a facet of pop culture that Cuban tradition and culture have not had an impact on. While some may accredit this to the American embargo and the “taboo acceptance” of “illegal goods,” most would chalk this up to whitewashing.

Latin music has hardly changed through the years, and while production efforts may have progressed with the advancement of production equipment, Cuban music has maintained an elegant air of old-fashioned quality and talent, and Umbe B is a prime example of this vintage eloquence.

Umbe B is a Latin artist born in Alamar, Cuba. Faced with the hardships of growing up during an embargo, Umbe B found the value of family very early on. Despite growing up in areas with high levels of crime, Umbe B never strayed from the importance of family and friends, using that to bolster him as he worked his way into a better situation.

Despite migrating to Canada in October 2019, Umbe B’s music career has been progressing steadily since 2013, when he founded an urban Cuban music group named Los Extraterrestres. Focusing on creating subgenres of urban music while innovating around the dance scene in Cuba, the group found great success across the island.

In 2016, Los Extraterrestres were nominated for one of Cuba’s most renowned music shows, Los Lucas, where they were spotted and hired by a European show and promotion company to perform in 3 venues during the summer festival in Ibiza and Majorca.

From there, things slowed down a bit for Umbe B until 2018 when he began his solo career, focusing his music more on the trap and hip-hop genres, which sparked some controversy among a handful of top artists and directors in Cuba. After his bandmates migrated to Europe and the rising controversy surrounding Umbe B’s productions, he decided to move to Canada.

Umbe B’s music can most accurately be summed up as a mix of Latin reggaeton, dembow, and dancehall sounds – all perfectly intertwined with trap elements made popular in Western music. Umbe B uses his passion for these genres as a springboard for his love for Cuba to tell stories based on personal experiences – both in Canada and Cuba.

Umbe B is set to release his first solo studio album in 2023.

Alt-Country Outfit Gregory Childs And Heart Lung Make A Powerful Musical Plea “From the Chest”

0

Traditional-leaning country and folk music often dance along the sharp and rough edges of life – loss, heartbreak, yearning and the desire for salvation. It connects heart-first, goes deep and then, gets into your bones. Toronto-based alt-country quintet Gregory Childs and Heart Lung are aiming straight for what’s under your ribs with their raw and driving new single, “From the Chest.”

Following up the band’s two-song debut “Baby Blue EP”, released in late 2020 and a one-off single “Lonesome” released last May, “From the Chest” delivers a train-chugging emotional wallop and carries the band’s stylistic and songwriting evolution another several steps further along the track. The sweet and savory counterpoint of songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist Gregory Childs and his wife, Tyrah, vocalist and tambourine player for the group, illustrates the duality of the song’s story of a man both grieving the death of his wife and pleading for his own salvation.

“It details the desperate pleas he makes to God as he asks to be allowed into heaven despite living a life of less-than-Christian ideals and shortfalls,” explains Gregory Childs. “It’s about praying your own way and being a good person without necessarily following all the ‘rules’ laid out by organized religion.”

I sing this song just to ensure that at that Holy hour
you’ll let me through your front gate though the devil may be sour
cause I may have promised him just a thing or two
but Lord I swear I’ll make it up to you

It turns out that the impetus to write “From the Chest” came from a very personal place of loss for Childs.

“I wrote this song out of inspiration and through a dedication to my own lost friend, a drummer who passed away too young,” he explains. “He was a devout Christian but struggled to keep up with the church-going ideals requested in the bible. A good heart that stumbled, fell and ultimately pleaded ‘take me home’ through his own song writing. He left a legacy that continues to breathe in the whole band.”

Take me back sweet Jesus
I want to go home tonight
Lord take me home
I’ve said my goodbyes

“Spun up with outlaw country and Cobain grease”, reads a descriptor from Gregory Childs and Heart Lung’s bio and it paints a vivid picture of this strum and thump group of storytellers who like to tinge the traditional with a dash or two of rock ‘n’ roll rebellion. Formed in 2019, the group also includes Nick Cousins on harmonica, Brent Kervin on bass and Zachary Moloci on drums and vocals.

“From the Chest” was recorded last winter at Pineship Sound in Toronto, which is owned by the band Zeus. Two members of Zeus lent a hand in the process, Carlin Nicholson and Mike O’Brien, who played organ on “From the Chest”. Childs and his cohorts rocked their way through a series of back-to-back shows before sequestering into Pineship to lay down the tracks, the bones live off the floor first followed by overdubs.

Just prior to the pandemic and since live music has revved up again, Gregory Childs & Heart Lung have been tearing up legendary stages around Toronto including The Horseshoe and The Dakota Tavern. With at least two more singles planned for release in the coming months, they’ll undoubtedly be expanding their roots and roll beyond the GTA.

When they get back under the lights on those hallowed Toronto stages and beyond, Gregory Childs & Heart Lung will be reaching deep into the audience’s own hearts with their revealing, very personal alt-country anthems coming right “From the Chest”.

“This song was catalyzed by my owns fears, fearing loss, fearing being split apart from passed-on loved ones,” adds Childs. “It’s a message to higher powers, a request to look beyond the superficial when casting final judgment on mortals and to give us a break for all our earthly shortcomings.”

America’s Got Talent Finalist Roberta Battaglia Releases Soaring “Truce”

0

Roberta Battaglia is a coveted Golden Buzzer winner and fourth-place finalist on Season 15 of America’s Got Talent, whereby 90 million people worldwide watched her masterful performances. Also excitingly, in 2021 Roberta filmed her first TV series Three Pines, with director of The Crown Sam Donovan. The show will air on Amazon Prime Video in December.

A dynamic up-and-coming young vocalist from Toronto, Canada, Roberta was born in 2009 into a musical family. She began her singing career at the astonishing age of three alongside her father, Alessandro Battaglia, and together the duo has graced many stages, from local community performances to galas and noted charity events. A second-generation Italian Canadian, Roberta is fluent in both English and Italian and performs a diverse repertoire of music in both languages ranging from ballads and Top 40 hits to high-octane pop.

Even though it can be hard to let go, it’s often the mature decision to end something that’s not working rather than to keep forcing it forward, even if that something is just a fight. That’s the message of “Truce,” the soaring first single – available now – by wise-beyond-her-years Battaglia.

Amid cascading piano and infectious beats, Battaglia’s voice captures both the melancholy and intense liberation of choosing to call a ceasefire, whether it’s in a friendship or a romantic relationship or among family members. The music video explores the act of truce in a variety of relationships, with Battaglia walking through various scenes among people arguing. It culminates in a particularly poignant scene in a diner where a waitress quits after a fight with her boss, while Battaglia quietly cheers her on.

So I wave a white flag, cuz I’m not bulletproof
The only way my heart wins, is by losing you
Go on and waste your apologies
You say you’ll change but you’ll just repeat
And so I wave a white flag, cause I can’t keep fighting you
Let’s call a truce

There’s also a scene where, after witnessing several arguments, Battaglia walks through a greenhouse and is suddenly surrounded by butterflies, illustrating the beautiful relief of choosing peace. The idea came about one day while Battaglia was enjoying lunch with her parents and her creative team, including her videographer Alex Gayoso. “I wanted a scene that was really dark and sad, and then it just all comes to life halfway through the video with the butterfly scenes,” Battaglia said. “I love the idea of ‘truce’ putting an end to anything upsetting or painful in our past by putting out positive energy.”
Battaglia’s inspiration in writing the song was some of the pain and hurt from her school years and trying to transcend it. “I want other people to realize that you’re not alone and you just need to call a truce with it,” she said.
