Paul McCartney Tells the Story of His Post-Beatles Journey In “Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run” Book

0

As the Sixties came to a close, Paul McCartney was faced with the daunting prospect of being a solo artist for the first time. Wings’ ascension to the top of the charts with classic albums including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At the Speed of Sound, along with the band’s stadium-filling live shows would prove to critics and fans that not all great acts are impossible to follow. Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is a rousing, stereophonic celebration of the songs, collaborations and performances that would shape the soundtrack of the late 20th century.

Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run by Paul McCartney, edited by Ted Widmer, arrives Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Drawn from over 500,000 words, based on dozens of hours of interviews with McCartney and numerous key players in the band’s orbit, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run weaves together the improbable trajectory of Paul McCartney and his newly formed band (featuring co-founding members Linda McCartney and Denny Laine) across the technicolor 1970s until their dissolution in 1981.

“I’m so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book. Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better I thought, ‘OK this is really good.’ We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way The Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz,” says McCartney.

Edited by the prize-winning historian Ted Widmer and organized around nine Wings albums, the oral history sheds new light on the immediate aftermath of the seismic global impact of The Beatles’ break-up, as the musical landscape and tastes began to splinter and diverge along with societal views. The narrative follows the various incarnations of the band as they survive a mugging in Nigeria, appear unannounced at UK university halls, tour in a sheared-off school bus with their children, while producing some of the most indelible and acclaimed music of the decade, including: “Mull of Kintyre,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “My Love,” “Jet,” “With a Little Luck,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Let ‘Em in,” “Junior’s Farm” and more.

With more than 100 black-and-white and color photographs, many never seen before, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is part of a larger reexamination and appreciation of the group and their catalog, including the 2024 theatrical release of the rare Wings live-in-studio performance film One Hand Clapping and its accompanying album; 50th anniversary editions of the Wings albums Band on the Run (released February 2024) and Venus and Mars (releasing March 2025); and a forthcoming documentary on Paul McCartney’s solo and Wings-related musical work of the 1970s from Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Morgan Neville.

“Did We Actually Book Them?” Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra Bring Black Sunday to Life

0

Cypress Hill celebrates the highest of high honors of its storied career with Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a three-day theatrical event and live album both immortalizing the hip hop icons’ now legendary once in a lifetime collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Arriving at U.S. and Canadian theaters March 30, 31 and April 2 (U.S. only) via Mercury Studios in partnership with Iconic Events Releasing, Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall brings the unprecedented collision of the trio’s 1993 masterpiece with one of the world’s most renowned orchestral ensembles to the eyes and ears of music lovers everywhere. A historic spectacle previously witnessed only by the thousands of Cypress devotees who packed Royal Albert Hall on July 10, 2024, the theatrical premiere and album release of Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall will allow the world at large to witness the intoxicating dark magic conjured when Cypress Hill and the 70-strong LSO bring this triple-platinum opus to life together.

The film and its accompanying album find B-Real, Sen Dog, Eric Bobo and co. in top form, performing nimbly atop monolithic arrangements running the gamut from ominous to sublime. The majestic classical embellishments to Black Sunday — as well as an assortment of cuts spanning the Cypress catalog — are the masterful work of conductor and arranger Troy Miller, who comments,”I’ve always been excited by the idea of merging genres, and to do it with the most prolific hip hop group of all time and the most exquisite symphony orchestra in the world was an honor! The band gave me free rein on the arrangements and we made something truly unique and mesmerizing – what a sublime collaboration!”

What began as a joke on a 1996 episode of The Simpsons has now become a true multi-cultural milestone. Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, the feature-length concert film, will be in cinemas for a special theatrical event March 30, 31 and April 2. For further information, go to https://www.iconicreleasing.com/events/cypress-hill/. Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, the full length live album, will be released June 6 via Mercury Studios.

Naming themselves after a local street in Los Angeles, Cypress Hill burst on the scene in 1991 with the release of their self-titled debut album. The singles “How I Could Just Kill a Man” and “The Phuncky Feel One” became underground hits, and the group’s public pro-marijuana stance earned them many fans among the alternative rock community. Cypress Hill followed their debut with Black Sunday in the summer of 1993, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200, garnered three GRAMMY® Award nominations, and went triple platinum in the U.S. Featuring timeless anthems “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That,” “Insane In The Brain,” “When The Shit Goes Down,” and “Hits From The Bong,” Black Sunday made Cypress Hill the first rap group to have two simultaneous Top 10 albums, and the first Latino-American hip-hop group to achieve multi-platinum success—a momentum that continued to mine platinum and gold during a succession of albums including III: Temples of Boom (1995), IV (1998), Skull & Bones(2000), Stoned Raiders (2001), Til Death Do Us Part (2004), Rise Up (2010), Elephants on Acid (2018) and certified bangers “Throw Your Set In The Air,” “Dr. Greenthumb,” “(Rap) Superstar,” “(Rock) Superstar,” “Champion Sound” and many more.

Cypress Hill made history once again in 2019 when the group was honored with their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, the band released its 10th album Back In Black to critical acclaim, with Kerrang declaring it “solidifies their status as a collective still expanding upon their legacy.” That same year, Cypress Hill released their “Insane in the Brain” documentary, via Mass Appeal’s “Hip Hop 50” franchise in partnership with Showtime. The New York Times praised the documentary as “an often-engaging chronicle of the group”, while Variety declared “the Cypress Hill documentary should put into perspective their pervasive influence and groundbreaking, Latin-tinged hip-hop crossed with booming metallic rock.” On July 10, 2024, Cypress Hill once again made pop culture history, performing a historic show with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Initially predicted by an episode of The Simpsons 28 years prior, the collaboration was brought to life in a sold-out, one-night-only event that showcased the revered Black Sunday in its entirety, with an unforgettable classical crossover hailed by several publications as a milestone of “hip hop history.”

Douglas Is Cancelled: BritBox’s Bold New Comedy Drama Tackles Cancel Culture

0

What happens when a respected journalist’s reputation is shattered by a single tweet? That’s the provocative premise behind Douglas Is Cancelled, the four-episode BritBox Original premiering on March 6, 2025. Created by Steven Moffat (Sherlock), the series stars Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) as Douglas Bellowes, a middle-aged broadcaster whose life spirals out of control after an accusation of sexism spreads like wildfire online. With the support of his editor (Nick Mohammed, Ted Lasso), his wife (Karen Gillan, Guardians of the Galaxy), and his agent (Simon Russell Beale, House of the Dragon), Douglas scrambles to salvage his career while grappling with the blurred lines of guilt, perception, and public outrage.

Directed by Ben Palmer (The Inbetweeners Movie) and produced by Lawrence Till, the series delves into the power dynamics of gender politics and trial by social media. As the drama unfolds, viewers will question whether Douglas is a relic of an outdated era or a scapegoat of modern hypersensitivity. With biting wit and sharp performances, Douglas Is Cancelled promises to spark conversation while keeping audiences riveted. Catch the premiere on BritBox and decide for yourself: Is Douglas truly guilty, or just another victim of cancel culture?

Pink Floyd’s Iconic “Live at Pompeii” Returns in 4K With Remastered Sound and First-Ever Full-Length Album Release

0

Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII, the groundbreaking 1972 film directed by Adrian Maben, returns to cinemas in Spring 2025. Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision will release the concert film in select cinemas and IMAX worldwide from 24 April and tickets are on sale from 5 March here.

Digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm footage, with enhanced audio newly mixed by Steven Wilson, the upcoming theatrical release presents the definitive version of this pioneering film.

Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII is accompanied by the live album, set for release by Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music, on CD, Digital Audio, and for the very first time in Dolby Atmos and on vinyl, from 2 May. Presenting a stunning first look at the newly restored footage and audio, a performance video clip of ‘Echoes’ at Pompeii is released today.

Pink Floyd At Pompeii pre-dates the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon. The film documents what Pink Floyd did before they became giants of the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic – where their music remains celebrated to this day. Set in the hauntingly beautiful ruins of the ancient Roman Amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy, this unique and immersive film captures Pink Floyd performing an intimate concert without an audience. Filmed in October 1971, the performance marked the very first live concert to take place at Pompeii, and features the vital ‘Echoes,’ ‘A Saucerful of Secrets,’ and ‘One of These Days.’ The breathtaking visuals of the amphitheatre, captured both day and night, amplify the magic of the performance. Additionally, the film includes rare behind-the-scenes footage of the band beginning work on The Dark Side of the Moon at Abbey Road Studios.

Nick Mason said “Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii is a rare and unique document of the band performing live in the period prior to The Dark Side Of The Moon.”

The film has been meticulously hand restored, frame-by-frame, from the original 35mm cut negative – discovered in five dubiously labelled cans within Pink Floyd’s own archives. This momentous breakthrough unearthed the very film that rolled through the cameras during those sweltering days amidst the ruins of Pompeii over 50 years ago.

Led by Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd, the team’s mission was to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original picture. The film was scanned in 4K using advanced techniques to ensure the finest, sharpest detail. Colors were enhanced, and every frame was meticulously reviewed and repaired, maintaining a natural and vivid appearance with minimal grain adjustments.

“Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment. The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after,” said Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd.

The film also features stunning sound quality with a new theatrical and home entertainment mix by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos that enhances the film’s depth and clarity, preserving the authenticity and spirit of the original 1972 release. Wilson’s aim was to remain faithful to how the band would have sounded on those scorching hot days in 1971.

Wilson added, “Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band. They are my “Beatles”, deeply ingrained in my musical DNA. I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool. It was an honour to remix the soundtrack to accompany Lana Topham’s incredible restoration of the film, which looks like it could’ve been filmed yesterday.”

The accompanying album release Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII will see the performance presented as a full-length live record for the very first time. The 2025 remix by Steven Wilson is newly available on CD/LP/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Audio/Dolby Atmos from 2 May.

Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII is presented by RM Productions and directed by Adrian Maben. It is executive produced by Reiner Moritz and Michelle Arnaud. Sony Music Vision is the distributor.

Tickets will go on sale from Wednesday, March 5 at 6am PT / 9am ET / 2pm GMT at www.pinkfloyd.film. Visit the event website for more information and ticketing details for IMAX and standard format cinemas.

Bono’s One-Man Show Comes to Life in “Bono: Stories of Surrender” on Apple TV+ and Apple Vision Pro

0

Today, Apple Original Films announced the groundbreaking new documentary event “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” a bold and lyrical visual exploration of Bono’s one-man show by the same name, to premiere globally on Friday, May 30, 2025 on Apple TV+. Based on his celebrated memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story,” and the accompanying book/theatre tour, the film hails from RadicalMedia and Plan B Entertainment, with award-winning filmmaker Andrew Dominik (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Blonde”) directing.

“Bono: Stories of Surrender” is a vivid reimagining of Bono’s critically acclaimed one-man stage show, “Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief…” As he pulls back the curtain on a remarkable life and the family, friends and faith that have challenged and sustained him, he also reveals personal stories about his journey as a son, father, husband, activist and rock star. Along with never-before-seen, exclusive footage from the Beacon Theatre shows, the film features Bono performing many of the iconic U2 songs that have shaped his life and legacy.

Also set to premiere on May 30, 2025 on Apple Vision Pro, “Bono: Stories of Surrender (Immersive)” will be the first feature-length film available in Apple Immersive Video, a remarkable media format recorded in 8K with Spatial Audio to produce a 180-degree video that places viewers onstage with Bono and in the center of his story. With this special edition of the film available only on Vision Pro, viewers will feel completely immersed in the music and storytelling. Releasing an immersive version of the film for Vision Pro alongside its debut on Apple TV+ is the latest example of Bono’s enduring commitment to innovation. Since U2’s earliest days, Bono and the band have consistently pushed boundaries and embraced new technologies to forge deeper and unexpected connections with their audience.

Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning RadicalMedia’s Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick (“Summer of Soul,” “Hamilton,” “David Byrne’s American Utopia”) produce alongside Academy Award-winning Plan B Entertainment’s Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (upcoming “F1,” “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave”). Bono executive produces with Jennifer Pitcher (“Kiss the Future”) and Kelly McNamara (“V-U2 an Immersive Concert Film at Sphere Las Vegas”).

“Bono: Stories of Surrender,” an abridged and updated paperback edition of Bono’s bestselling memoir, will be released concurrently with the documentary film. Introspective, intimate and irreverent in equal measure, this version has been refined to mirror the arc of his one-man show and features a film tie-in book cover and new introduction by the author.

Born Paul David Hewson, Bono has been headlining stadiums around the world with U2 for more than four decades. The band has sold over 175 million records and won 22 Grammy Awards. A longtime activist in the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty, Bono is also the co-founder of ONE and (RED). For his music and activism, he has been awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, France’s Legion of Honor and an honorary British knighthood.

“Bono: Stories of Surrender” joins the award-winning slate of Apple Original documentary films, including the recently announced untitled feature on legendary rock icons Fleetwood Mac; Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim’s “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which swept the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards with five wins, alongside four Emmy Award wins; Emmy Award-nominated “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” a uniquely raw and intimate documentary spanning her six-year journey into a new light; Emmy Award-nominated and PGA Award-winning “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces,” featuring legendary writer, producer, director, actor and comedian Steve Martin; and Emmy Award-nominated “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry,” among many others.

Apple TV+ offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all of a user’s favorite screens. After its launch on November 1, 2019, Apple TV+ became the first all-original streaming service to launch around the world, and has premiered more original hits and received more award recognitions faster than any other streaming service in its debut. To date, Apple Original films, documentaries and series have earned 553 wins and 2,557 award nominations and counting, including multi-Emmy Award-winning comedy “Ted Lasso” and historic Oscar Best Picture winner “CODA.”
