Carrellee Releases Video For ‘Morning Sun’ ; New Album ‘Scale Of Dreams’ Out November 18

0

Carrellee releases the video for ‘Morning Sun’ today. The track is the first single taken from her forthcoming album Scale of Dreams out on November 18 (Negative Gain Productions.) Carrellee overlays delicately sensual vocals about divorce and desire over a wall of scorched synths and processed tapes. She had some help crafting her noir synth-pop sound from producer Brett Bullion (Low, Poliça.)

While writing new songs for this record, Carrellee started posting weekly demo videos, titled ‘The Official Unofficial Synth Series’ on social media amassing nearly one million streams on Facebook in 2021. ‘Scale Of Dreams’ conjures crushed artifacts of desire, with each instrument processed through crumpled and fried analog tape drawing inspiration from 80’s new wave icons Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush, as well as a wide variety of Italo disco and synthwave artists. The inspiration for ‘Morning Sun’ came to Carrellee in a dream during her divorce. In the morning she quickly transcribed it from her home studio, and shared the demo video on Facebook where it has received 379K views.

About Carrellee: Carrellee (aka Sarah Pray) grew up in a musical household in Wisconsin. Her dad taught her piano and by age five was learning jazz chords and music theory. She worked at recording studios in Madison and Minneapolis as an intern and then started creating her own music. She had a few releases under Sarah Pray and also has a folk duo album with her ex-husband Thomas Kivi performing as Kivi & Pray touring through Europe, and much of the US in the style of Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons. During the pandemic and divorce, she wanted to both experiment and return to her roots. “I am a big fan of female artists like Bjork, Angel Olsen, Fiona Apple, and PJ Harvey, who constantly evolve. I feel more in touch with myself more than ever since the divorce.” For her new sound Carrellee enlisted producer Brett Bullion (Low, Bad Bad Hats, Now, Now) to fine tune her songs.

About Negative Gain Productions: The label originally started in 1997 delivering classic industrial, EBM, darkwave, coldwave, post-punk, and goth music to the masses. In early 2011, Roger Jarvis (of KDC and HexRx) joined Micah Skaritka (of Cruciform Injection) to reboot the label. This reboot included rebranding and restructuring of the stable of bands on the label. The first three bands on the reboot were: HexRx, Kevorkian Death Cycle, and Alter Der Ruine. Since then, the label has released over 1200 songs, through 60 different bands and projects. Negative Gain’s approach to label curation is to find music that is just south of Mass Market. Music that would appeal to fans of 80’s and 90’s electronic and post-punk but has a sharper edge that might not be family room safe.

Artists, Industry Leaders, Legal Experts Join Together To Protect Black Art

0

Artists, industry leaders, and legal experts have joined together in a call to “Protect Black Art,” publishing an open letter in The New York Times and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution urging legislators across America to limit how creative expression can be used against defendants on trial. Specifically, it calls for an end to the racially discriminatory practice of treating rap lyrics as confessions.

The lengthy list of diverse signatories includes companies such as Warner Music Group, Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group, BMG, Kobalt, and Atlanta-based LVRN and Quality Control, AEG Presents, Audiomack, Deezer, Live Nation Entertainment, SiriusXM, SoundCloud, Spotify, TIDAL, TikTok, and YouTube Music; organizations like the American Association of Independent Music, the American Civil Liberties Union, Artist Rights Alliance, Black Music Action Coalition, Black Women’s Roundtable, BLD PWR, Color Of Change, Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, NYU Center on Race, Inequality, and the Law, People For the American Way, PEN America, Rap Coalition, the Recording Academy, the Recording Industry Association of America, Red Hot, Sankofa.org, Songwriters of North America, Sony Music Group’s Global Social Justice Fund, Warner Music Group / the Blavatnik Family Foundation’s Social Justice Fund, Woke Vote, and Universal Music Group’s Taskforce for Meaningful Change; legal and humanities scholars from elite universities including Columbia, Harvard, Howard, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale; and artists and songwriters such as 2 Chainz, 21 Savage, 50 Cent, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Alicia Keys, Amy Allen, Baby Tate, Benson Boone, Big Sean, Black Eyed Peas, Breland, Brothers Osborne, Bryce Vine, Busta Rhymes, Camila Cabello, Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, Cordae, D-Nice, Dave East, DJ Drama, DJ Khaled, Drake, Erica Banks, Fat Joe, Fredo Bang, Future, Giveon, grandson, Highly Suspect, Hit-Boy, Ice-T, IDK, Isaiah Rashad, J. Cole, Jack Harlow, Jadakiss, Jay Electronica, Jeezy, Joey Bada$$, John Legend, KayCyy, Killer Mike, Lainey Wilson, Lil Baby, Lil Jairmy, Lil Tjay, Lil Uzi Vert, Mac Phipps, Mary J. Blige, Meek Mill, Megan Thee Stallion, Michelle Branch, Miguel, Moneybagg Yo, Morgan Wallen, NAV, Nessa Barrett, NLE Choppa, Normani, Omar Apollo, Pheelz, Polo G, Post Malone, Quavo, Questlove, Regina Spektor, Robin Thicke, Roddy Ricch, Shordie Shordie, Shy Carter, T.I., Takeoff, Tanna Leone, Teddy Swims, Tee Grizzley, Theo Croker, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla $ign, WILLOW, YBN Nahmir, and Yo Gotti.

Drafted and published by Warner Music Group (WMG), the letter reads in part:

Beyond the obvious disregard for free speech and creative expression protected by the First Amendment, this racially targeted practice punishes already marginalized communities and their stories of family, struggle, survival, and triumph.

Kevin Liles, Chairman & CEO of WMG’s 300 Elektra Entertainment, said: “For decades, a racial double-standard has been employed against Black and Brown hip-hop artists by turning their creative visions against them in courts of law. Enough is enough. If prosecutors are unwilling to end this practice on their own, then laws need to be passed that end this flagrant abuse. On behalf of WMG, I want to thank the extraordinary group of people across our industry and the legal community who are joining us in this critical fight.”

Julie Greenwald, Chairman & CEO of WMG’s Atlantic Music Group, said: “Throughout history, artists have created characters and forged narratives that reflect the culture around them. That freedom of expression is essential to the creative process and the role of art in society. The harsh reality is that Black artistic creativity is being threatened at an unprecedented level, and we must make every effort to stop this unethical, discriminatory approach to prosecution.”

Experts have found more than 500 cases involving rap as evidence in public records, and they note this number is just the tip of the iceberg. For the most part, this does not account for indictment proceedings, juvenile cases, or cases that end in a plea bargain, and plea bargains are an overwhelming majority of outcomes in criminal prosecutions. Meanwhile, researchers have found only four instances (link below) since the 1950s of non-rap lyrics being submitted as evidence – three of those cases were thrown out, and the fourth was overturned after conviction.

Legislators at the state and federal level are already taking action. Governor Newsom recently signed a bill into law in California, and there are bills currently under consideration in New York and New Jersey, as well as the RAP (Restoring Artistic Protection) Act introduced by Rep. Hank Johnson and Rep. Jamaal Bowman in the U.S. Congress.

The #ProtectBlackArt movement began earlier this year when Liles and Greenwald launched a change.org petition, which today has nearly 65,000 signatures.

Comprised of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, Lisa —all immensely charismatic vocalists, dancers, and fast-rising fashion icons—BLACKPINK began their meteoric rise with their 2016 debut “SQUARE ONE” and further proved their crossover power with “SQUARE UP” (a 2018 release that quickly cracked the Billboard 200).
Soon after signing with Interscope Records through a global partnership with YG Entertainment, the group made their full-length debut with 2020’s immediately iconic THE ALBUM. THE ALBUM shot to #2 on the Billboard 200 and landed three singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “How You Like That” (the iconic single that shattered several YouTube records, including fastest video to cross 150 million views), “Ice Cream” (a collaboration with Selena Gomez that broke the record for highest-charting female K-pop group on the Hot 100), and “Lovesick Girls” (a track that’s sold over 1.4 million copies worldwide, making BLACKPINK the first K-pop girl group to sell over a million units). Through the years, BLACKPINK have also garnered a number of major awards (including an MTV Video Music Award for Song of the Summer as well as three E! People’s Choice Awards), collaborated with superstars like Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga, performed on “The Tonight Show,” and starred in BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky (a 2020 film hailed by the New York Times as an “endearing documentary that emphasizes each member’s individuality”). With over 6.3 billion career Spotify streams to date, BLACKPINK have released their wildly anticipated sophomore album BORN PINK. The group are currently on the road for their 2022/2023 world tour which kicked off on October 15 in Seoul, South Korea.

Singer-Songwriter Kàsh Mojo Mourns the Life and Death of Townes Van Zandt in “Galveston Gone”

0

Sometimes legendary talent can play tug of war with a person’s demons, and that was the case of the late, great Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Albuquerque-based singer-songwriter Kàsh Mojo offers up a ballad of the hopeless idealist, reckless drunk, and universally-admired star for his debut single “Galveston Gone.”

Named after the location of Townes’ notorious psychiatric ward stay, Mojo’s booming baritone croons soulfully about the love, opportunities, and memories lost in Townes’ tumultuous life, accompanied by a catchy bassline, baritone sax, and guitar that builds up to a gorgeously fuzzed-out and wailing lament. A mournful chorus of “Slow down, please, slow down” contrasts with mounting and breaking waves of sound, frayed at the edges with Mojo’s palpable empathy, as he tries to undo what’s already been done:

If you keep drowning your spirit with spirits
Don’t you know it will always haunt you
Like the shadow that does not depart
Revealed in the light of the sun

For this single, Mojo is backed by an all-star crew from Austin, Texas, including members of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. The song was produced by Bryan Ray (Lonely Child) and Grammy Award winning engineer Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, The White Stripes, Modest Mouse).

When he’s not making music, Kàsh Mojo works as an attorney in Albuquerque – yes, you read that right. He’s not the famous television attorney you’re probably thinking of, but a real person who, when not donning a suit and tie, sports an acoustic guitar and a vintage Western shirt. A stranger-in-a-strange land storyteller like Lee Hazelwood, Jim Sullivan, or even Neil Diamond before him, Mojo plaintively speaks and sings while his band serves up dynamics that alternate between big and bombastic, and relaxed and pastoral. Mojo’s baritone lends a signature, almost Pavarotti-like theatricality that pairs beautifully with his band’s deft instrumentation. His debut LP, Buried or Replaced, drops in 2023.

His single “Galveston Gone” is available now.

After 11-Year Hiatus, Niagara, ON’s A Sea of Gold and Burgundy Shares ‘Ghosts In These Walls’ EP

0

After an 11-year hiatus, Niagara Falls, Ontario favorites A Sea of Gold and Burgundy returns with the new EP Ghosts In These Walls, a four-song testament to friendship, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of music. While founding members Carl David Onofrio, Aaron Berger (Blue Stars, BBG, Perpetual Peace Project), and Nathanial Goold (Blackflies, BBG, Electric Wildlife) never stopped writing and performing as members of different bands, the pandemic, along with the sudden death of their former manager, led the group to realize their unique musical chemistry anew. With nearly twenty album credits between them, Ghosts In These Walls is the group’s first release in eleven years.

When traditional venues shut down amid the COVID pandemic, the seasoned multi-instrumentalists re-met at a mutual friend’s house and began to jam together, quickly rekindling the creative sparks that fueled their earlier 2000 incarnation. Soon after, they were tapped to perform at a memorial for their former manager Robin Morse. They officially reunited as A Sea of Gold and Burgundy in March of 2022, performing their first public show in more than a decade.

Buoyed by fan requests and recognizing how special such musical bonds can be, it wasn’t long before the trio went back into the studio. Produced by Pete Haverkamp and financed by the Niagara Falls Cultural Development Fund, the resulting four-song EP finds the trio older, wiser, and reenergized.

“Ghosts In These Walls,” a strummed ode to the healing power of solid friendship, shimmers with Berger, Goold and Onofrio’s seasoned harmonies and unrushed playing. “Palace of Fates” expresses a more secular view on the mystical, informed by Goold’s growing up — and out of — performing faith-based music. “Lady” is at once upbeat and plaintive, uplifted by piano and tambourine as the trio stretches out the chorus in tight harmony. “Midnight Rain,” the song that Morse once requested to be played at his memorial and which ultimately brought the group back together, plumbs the heart of a late-night thinker as they move toward a state of acceptance.

A Sea Of Gold and Burgundy are back for good. Tell your family, friends, and even the ghosts in these walls.

The Frost Duo Lead Us To Seduction with ’70s/’80s-Influenced “To Be With You”

0

Sometimes you just want to be taken on an unhurried, mellow journey of seduction, and Scranton, PA-based The Frost Duo deliver with their ‘70s/’80s-influenced smooth-jazz ballad “To Be With You” off their new LP Play Nice – available now.

Singer LeahBeth Evans’ voice slinks and shimmies through the backdrop of warm analog keyboards and velvety jazz guitar as she boldly inquires, “Can you tell me what you’re doing tonight/ Can you tell me what you’re doing next year/ Cuz I need to be with you.” And it’s hard not to melt, and succumb completely to the song’s charms, when she starts to sing about fearlessly taking a leap of faith – “Well, you know I’m not afraid to pursue/ A love greater than imagined and true.”

“To Be With You” is included on the duo’s five-song EP Play Nice, a sonic rollercoaster of emotion. From a lyrical aspect, Play Nice takes the listener not only through the consciousness of the composers LeahBeth Evans and Christian Gratz themselves, but it also introduces us to the friends and acquaintances who have filled Evans’ and Gratz’s ears with their own experiences of finding love and experiencing loss, anger, and even impending doom from the recent global crisis we’ve all experienced. From a sonic aspect, Play Nice is a celebration of the duo’s love of smooth jazz, traditional compositions, and even rock music. They will be embarking on a small tri-state tour in support of the EP, and dates are as follows:

October 29, 2022 The Hotel Hershey Hershey, PA
October 30, 2022 Ad Lib inside Hilton Harrisburg Harrisburg, PA
November 19, 2022 Crystal Springs Resort Hamburg, NJ
December 3, 2022 Lackawanna Winterfest Scranton, PA
December 31, 2022 Skytop Lodge Skytop, PA

The Frost Duo consists of multi-instrumentalist and composer Christian Gratz and lead vocalist/songwriter LeahBeth Evans. In 2015, LeahBeth and Christian met through mutual Facebook friends and began corresponding about their love of music. Soon, they began casually dating, and after about a month, Christian invited LeahBeth to sing a few songs at a gig he booked in Dunmore, PA, at an Italian restaurant called Russell’s. After the night was finished, the owner requested that the two perform twice a week for the rest of the summer, and they agreed. After that regular gig, the two lovers decided that the sky was the limit, and that they would continue to make beautiful music together.

Throughout the years, the duo has performed at some prestigious and renowned American venues, including Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, Club Macanudo in New York City, and the Crystal Springs Resort. After years of traveling, The Frost Duo decided that they wanted to dive deeper into their love for smooth jazz, and so they began writing and recording. Since then, they have had recordings land on the iTunes jazz charts and the BDS/Neilson Smooth Jazz “Most Added” listings.

Their new single “To Be With You” is available now.
