Live Wire of a Rock & Electro-Popster JACK WEST Laments Long-Distance Love with “Montreal”

0

Nothing warms the heart and moves the feet more than well-done electronic pop music, and Jack West is no stranger to that. Available now, this acute awareness is what makes his newest single “Montreal” a welcome earworm.

Best described as Tame Impala meets Gary Numan, “Montreal” is the first track and single from the Rochester, NY-based artist’s forthcoming album, Numb. A classic love story about relationships hitting the fan as distance takes its toll on our lovers, the song pulls inspiration from West’s bicoastal experience at the time years ago living in San Francisco while his hometown love lived in Montreal — and the nuances of love lost in the miles between them.

The turmoil of COVID-19 not making things any easier, especially with the travel restrictions between their respective countries, “Montreal” is the touchy in-between of cutting your losses or repairing a heart you broke. While the upbeat modern take on 80’s Brit synthpop is enough to give this song its own happy ending, the lyrics aren’t lost on West’s listeners; with an almost apologetic timbre, the prolific live wire of an artist offers condolences to his lost love while seemingly looking for forgiveness.

“That’s just personally the way I’ve been feeling the last two years,” West admits, “and I know a lot of other people feel the same way…

“We’ve all lost something during this time — either loved ones, jobs, or relationships.”

Where there was loss, West did his best to harness what he could within any silver lining of gain; while the pandemic swept the world in multiple waves, West spent his time writing and recording Numb, an up-and-coming nine-track album that includes “Montreal” as well as a handful more songs.

“The album is like a book, with each song a different chapter,” West reveals. “I like to write about real things; I’ll sit in my room for hours, record all night, and go to school with no sleep the next day.”

It’s West’s prowess, combined with the emotional rollercoaster that is adolescent life during COVID-19, that’s led to the creation of his evocative brand of genre-bending rock meets electronic pop music with a well-earned reputation behind it.

As a 17-year-old singer/songwriter facing his junior year in high school, West has been on more tours and recorded more studio albums than most breakthrough musicians see in their first 10 years at it.

Best summed up as a teenage rock ‘n’ roll veteran, and tucking a nationwide tour under his belt, he performed with the distinguished Eddie Vedder at the age of 12, and has already recorded two albums, an EP, and a series of singles – including “Missing Out,” which featured a solo by legendary Pearl Jam guitarist, Mike McCready.

This young legend’s resume doesn’t stop there; Jack West has performed at The BottleRock Festival in Napa, CA, Danny Clinch’s Transparent Gallery in Ashbury Park, NJ, at the 50th Woodstock Celebration in Bethel, NY, and more.

Toronto-based charity Chai Lifeline Canada is pleased to announce that Grammy-winning and music legend Kenny G (and Friends) will headline their annual concert at the Roy Thomson Hall on June 20, 2022. Tickets are now available here.

Chai Lifeline Canada youth Ambassador Jess Rosenbloom will also be on stage, sharing her story of strength and bravery in the face of pediatric cancer. The evening will also include silent and live auctions and awards to celebrate extraordinary community service in support of Chai Lifeline Canada.

With the release of his self-titled debut album in 1982, Kenny G became the top instrumental musician of the modern era and one of the best-selling artists of all time, with global sales totaling more than 75 million records. His first new album in 6 years, New Standards, features 11 original compositions inspired by the jazz ballads of the ’50s and ’60s.

Kenny is the subject of the new Netflix documentary, “Listening To Kenny G,” directed by Penny Lane. The doc takes a humorous, but incisive, look at the best-selling instrumentalist of all time – and quite possibly one of the most famous living musicians. The fourth installment in the Music Box series investigates the artist born Kenny Gorelick exploring his talent for playing jazz so smoothly that a whole new genre, “Smooth Jazz,” formed around him. Kenny G speaks candidly about his musical background, his stringent work ethic, and his controversial standing in the jazz canon.

It’s been three years since Chai Lifeline Canada brought the community together for an evening in support of the non-profit charitable organization. While the pandemic has been extremely challenging for everyone, for families living with life-threatening and chronic illness, it has been harder in so many ways. “We are so grateful for the resilience of our team, the commitment of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors who made it possible to restore hope throughout the pandemic. We look forward to gathering together to show our support to our entire community says Chai Lifeline Canada Executive Director, Mordechai Rothman.

Chai Lifeline Canada is a non-profit organization that provides support to children and families who are facing life-threatening and chronic illness. When a child is born with or develops a serious illness, every member of the family and every aspect of every day is impacted. The Von Bondies, Blasternaut Members Form Stereobabe; Release New “Tumbleweed” Single & Video

0

With handclaps, rock and roll, electric riffs, and a sonic breeze sending you into an audio oasis, Canadian / U.S. rockers Stereobabe are rolling through town like a “Tumbleweed” with the release of their new single and video.

The song is the call and answer for good vibes, classic music, and, as the video shows, quite literally the soundtrack for having the windows rolled down and the radio cranked up.

“While in pandemic lockdown, we started jamming a riff together,” says Stereobabe — aka the magic duo that is Leann Banks (The Von Bondies) and Ted Lamont (Blasternaut). “We ultimately thought the word ‘Tumbleweed’ fit really well, and gave us a lyrical direction to take the song.

“It also gave us a direction to drive!” they continue. “So, we finished writing the song and started planning a road trip to the American southwest to film the video.

“Ultimately, this desert road trip song is about life, love, and adventure.”

Birthed amidst the pandemic’s lockdown, with each musician looking for creative outlets to continue cultivating their craft, Stereobabe’s masterfully combined forces lead to a slew of singles, media attention, and ultimately, love. Now united, the pair began dating during their shared passion for recording music while connecting from opposite sides of the border — Banks from Detroit, Michigan, and Lamont from Windsor, Ontario.

Influenced by an eclectic myriad of musicians, Stereobabe lists everyone from Sloan to the Pixies to the Beatles to the New Pornographers among their inspirations. The duo nestles neatly inside power pop, upbeat dance beats married to catchy hooks and earworm melodies. Their first single, “Pandemic Love,” chronicled their border-preventing budding relationship, and their mash of exciting covers and originals have garnished them hundreds of thousands of views on social media.

Alongside the single, “Tumbleweed” also boasts a visual component documenting their epic road trip across the United States. Taking Stereobabe to national historic sites and tourist attractions, the pair make their way from Michigan to California, and everywhere in between, crossing a variety of States on their open highway journey.

Stereobabe tumbles out the speakers with this audioscape anthem about spanning the deserts in search of ‘one true love’ and the title captures it perfectly.

Perhaps a tumbleweed may seem like a lowly, abandoned spruce of a mirage in the dirt, but beyond the borders is a chase to catch what could be blowing in the wind just beyond your fingertips.

And once you’ve caught a “Tumbleweed,” you’ll be hooked on Stereobabe.

Folk-Rockers Village Manor Talk About Finding That “Special One” in Catchy New Single

0

Canadian folk-rock group Village Manor tells a musical tale of being lucky enough to find that unique someone in our lives with their catchy new single, “Special One.”

The latest Village Manor song is a heartfelt story that naturally fits the uplifting instrumental arrangement and speaks to the rhythmic chemistry of the band. Bright guitars and splashy drum fills are seamlessly interwoven with warm vocals to create a sound that is recognizable yet distinctly different.

In tandem with the smooth vocal work, the lyrics convey the trials and tribulations that come with keeping the “Special One” in our lives happy.

“Don’t know if I made a mistake
I’m wondering if you’re sleeping or you’re wild and awake
And I know
You go left, I go right and I think it’s alright now
Don’t know but I’m hoping you’ll stay
I wanna hold you close but you’re miles away”

While Village Manor’s robust musical style blends well in any setting, the origin story of this collection of musicians is anything but ordinary.

Village Manor started in Toronto in 2018 before founding members Sam Kay and John Weinberg would meet the other bandmates through a series of chance and cosmic encounters. Village Manor acquired singer Dr. Mike Levine, a Veterinarian with Wychwood Veterinarian Hospital — as well as a gifted and amazing singer and stage man — as he was performing with his Tragically Hip tribute band. The group quickly rounded out with the artistic talents of bassist/sound engineer Mike Grundy (Wychwood Sound) and renowned Toronto percussionist Corey Weinberg (Numb Tongues).

Starting as an open mic/cover band, Village Manor tackled important subject matter right out the gate with their debut single “Gunsaway” earlier this year about the prevalence of gun violence in society today. They are currently writing and recording the rest of their debut album.

Singer/Songwriter jsin Says “I Choose Love” in Uplifting New Single

0

Alongside its gripping and story-rich new music video, Canadian singer/songwriter jsin tells an uplifting story of positivity and self-acceptance with an up-tempo edge on his latest single, “I Choose Love.”

Groovy from the get-go, “I Choose Love” is the rocking new release from the Toronto-based artist’s eclectic new album, Surrender (2022). The close-out track to the six-song EP, it draws on the pop-rocker’s emotional complexity and compositional strength to construct an anthemic sound embedded with deeply personal ideas.

Reflecting on his own experiences, jsin conveys his unique perspective through his silky-smooth vocal stylings and a multi-rhythmic approach to instrumentation that fills the ears with delight; rich melodies and a catchy hook are the vehicle for his ideas of self-reflection and the journey toward self-forgiveness.

“There’s so much anger left in me
There’s a lot of rage I hope I never see
But it’s alive in me and a part I’ll never lose
So I’ll forgive myself and learn how it can be used”

Authenticity and compassion drive the hopeful lyrics to make a genuine connection with the listener and inspire self-love, and jsin’s artistic vision is further realized through the expert visual craftsmanship and dedication toward the music video; shot, directed, and edited by German Prieto, the music video acts more like a professionally produced short film with incredible cinematography to emphasize social situations where a more loving approach is necessary.

“I Choose Love” and Surrender came together under the guidance of jsin’s mentor and longtime collaborator, Adrian Andres. “Every song is me expressing that I have to let myself be, let myself exist, not just let my thought processes or my ego drive my actions,” jsin says of the project’s status as a musical manifestation around his own personal journey.

Raised in a home that did not prioritize music, jsin’s life was changed forever with the rise of MuchMusic and the popularity of general music culture. After releasing his 2009 debut album Born, jsin began acting in television, landing roles in shows such as The Strain and Designated Survivor.

With a renewed fire for music and the emotional growth that came along with breaking out as an actor, jsin uses his platform as an artist to inspire hope in others. “We all have struggles,” he shares. “We all question things…

“But we can’t let those things drive what we do.”

In fact, we can choose love, just as jsin says to do.

Jazz-Rock Fusion Artist Dominic Mancuso Reveals “Her Simple Truth” in New Single

0

It takes a deep reserve of courage, conviction, and self-love to leave everything you know to start a new life in a new country when you feel trapped in the one you’ve been living. JUNO and CFMA winning jazz-rock fusion artist Dominic Mancuso has a dear friend who successfully did just that, and is the inspiration behind this, his powerful new single “Her Simple Truth.”

“Her Simple Truth” is the lead single from Dominic Mancuso’s new release, Dances in My Mind — his fourth album, and one celebrating his 25-year career in music and his symbiotic relationship with Italy. This new project has this consummate storyteller with a passion for collaboration teaming up with renowned Italian pianist/arranger Vittorio Mezza — who plays piano, celeste, and Rhodes throughout.

“Her Simple Truth” rides on a sophisticated musical landscape anchored by a heavy groove that smoothly navigates between piano and horn section-driven, smoky soul and virtuosic jazz solo interludes. Mancuso’s strong and worldly-wise voice with its slight whiskey rasp positions him as the perfect narrator to tribute his friend’s triumphant story.

“Her battle with an abusive relationship saw her leave South Africa with her two children under the age of four and emigrate to Canada, where she became a professional massage therapist” explains Mancuso.

That kind of radical change to better both her life and her children’s lives would have taken a lot of guts, self-love, and faith in the future. That resonated with Mancuso enough to want to honour it in song.

“And she loves herself
She opens the doors to others
It’s this love of self,
It’s all the gold she’ll ever want, she’ll ever need”

While taking inspiration from his friend’s courageous story, “Her Simple Truth” travels its own narrative path to create a fictional story and character in the song that goes beyond actualities.

“Her daily interactions with pompous clients, who felt she was a commodity with a price on it, inspired the fictional character Mr. Gold,” explains Mancuso.

Mr. Gold appears in the song described as “Mr. Ruthless, Mr. Silky and sly” as an antithesis to the female character’s honest, hardworking, and down-to-earth personality and intrinsic self-worth.

“She knew every inch of this man.
Raw as a scream. Cracked at the seams.”

“I used her narratives to inspire a totally fictional story based on the idea of possessing a love for oneself,” says Mancuso. “I am BIG on the idea that one cannot love another if one cannot love themselves first.”

To flesh out this self-love-based story, Mancuso collaborated with poet and novelist Antonio D’Alfonso on the lyrics for “Her Simple Truth.” On the music side, “Her Simple Truth” is one of the new album’s tracks that signifies that Mancuso worked with his longtime band, Dominic Mancuso Group (DMG), on it. Besides Mancuso, the other three main members of the “core four” are guitarist Tony Zorzi, percussionist Rosendo “Chendy” Leon, bassist Francisco “Paco” Luviano. Complementing the core four are John “JJ” Johnson on sax and woodwinds and Jerry “Poppa Bear” Caringi on B3 organ, accordion, piano, and vocals – some of Canada’s most forward-thinking musicians.

Rich and cinematic in scope, the ten tracks on Dances in My Mind take Dominic Mancuso Group and a chamber ensemble through a soulful blend of singer-songwriter meets classical and jazz. Dances in My Mind also features string work from a quartet headed up by GRAMMY Award-nominated violinist and arranger Drew Jurecka (Dua Lipa, Donovan Woods, Ron Sexsmith).

Of Dances in My Mind, Jazz Global Media’s Raul da Gama says, “This is a performance for the ages, one that bodes well for whatever new music is to come from the extraordinary mind – and vocalastics – of Mr. Mancuso.”

The new album follows up Mancuso’s solo debut Calling Out (2000), 2010’s Comfortably Mine, which netted him a JUNO Award for World Music Album of the Year, which was a first for an album sung entirely in Italian, Sicilian, and various Italian dialects. Later that year, Mancuso also took home the Canadian Folk Music Award for World Music Artist of the Year. In 2014, Mancuso released the internationally acclaimed Sub Urban Gypsy.

Celebrated Canadian Quintet Ensemble Vivant Release Groundbreaking New Album, iFugue ~ A World of Fugues

0

Ensemble Vivant channels their rich stylistic diversity and innovative programming to create a classical fusion track that’s one-of-a-kind with their latest single, “iFugue,” and album, iFugue ~ A World of Fugues.

A sonic expedition of musical discovery, and harnessing all the brilliance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Sinfonia in E minor for strings and continuo, RV 134, Ensemble Vivant puts their own spin on an old compositional technique for the new offering.

The full album is a highly unique collection of 15 fugues (some with preludes), classic and modern, international works, standards, and three Canadian world premieres — all under the brilliant musicianship of pianist/artistic director Catherine Wilson, violinist Corey Gemmel, violist Norman Hathaway, cellist Tom Mueller, and bassist George Koller teaming up with renowned drummer/percussionist Adrian Bent (Drake, Eminem, Stevie Wonder).

Fugues, a repeated musical theme carried by several voices that seemingly chase each other, have been found in music since the Italian renaissance about 500 years ago. iFugue ~ A World of Fugues is a tribute to the greatest fugue composer of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach, with several other masterful fugue composers and their respective countries represented — including Antonio Vivaldi (Italy), Heitor Villa-Lobos (Brazil), Aldemaro Romero (Venezuela), Astor Piazzolla (Argentina), John Burke and Michael Coghlan (Canada), Dmitri Shostakovich (Russia), Cesar Franck (France), and, of course, J.S. Bach (Germany).

The inspiration for “iFugue” came as Ensemble Vivant was preparing to record an homage to Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla; a series of wonderfully constructed fugues by Piazzolla was discovered and inspired the unearthing of the masterful fugues written worldwide. The title “iFugue” was coined by its arranger, the great John Burke, whose dream was for the song to prosper before his passing in January 2020.

Along with the deep musical history of fugue, Ensemble Vivant has dedicated itself to the celebration and preservation of many Classical and Jazz-related styles of music that have proven to be enjoyed by all ages and backgrounds. Hathaway describes fugue as “an example of the universal appeal and the boundless adaptability of music across time and geography.” The song was also notably mastered by Andy Walter at legendary Abbey Road Studios in London.

Ensemble Vivant is the flagship group of a larger group of musicians who are part of the registered not-for-profit charity Euterpe: Music is the Key.

Named after the Greek Muse of Music, Euterpe has provided the highest quality music education/performance programs to children in underserved Canadian communities for over 15 years. With virtual sessions to accommodate during the pandemic, Euterpe has mainly dedicated itself to the idea of music as a developmental tool in early childcare, and primarily refers to science that demonstrates enrichment and life-enhancing benefits in children with early exposure to music education.

Fugues are among the many styles of music that children of diverse cultural backgrounds experiencing Euterpe’s programs continue to respond incredibly favourably to.

Ensemble Vivant’s rhythmically compelling new single “iFugue” and iFugue ~ A World of Fugues are available now.

Roy Woods Is Back With Passionate New Single “Insecure” On OVO Sound

0

Gearing up for a momentous next chapter, multi-platinum Toronto R&B auteur Roy Woods unveils a new single and music video entitled “Insecure” on OVO Sound today. Produced by Harv (Justin Bieber’s “Peaches” [feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon]), it marks his first solo single of 2022.

The track’s lightly plucked guitar ebbs and flows with the romantic rise and fall of his falsetto. His dynamic vocals provide the perfect soundtrack to the accompanying music video; a nod to the Robert Rodriguez-directed nineties cult classic feature film Desperado. Roy pays homage to the iconic Antonio Banderas antihero with his trick guitar case and thirst for vengeance.

“Insecure” heralds the arrival of Roy’s anxiously awaited forthcoming album Mixed Emotions—due out this summer. The song also arrives as the follow-up to last year’s “Touch You,” which amassed over 10 million Spotify streams and 1.3 million YouTube views on the music video.

Roy Woods continues to level up on his own terms. He has impressively generated a staggering 2 billion total global streams and 1.2 billion total US streams. His 2018 album, Say Less, notably bowed at #11 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Chart. Along the way, he has packed houses on headline tours and supported the likes of Drake, Future, and Migos in arenas and amphitheaters.

Eric Clapton’s “Nothing But The Blues” Documentary & Soundtrack To Be Released June 24

0

Eric Clapton’s lifelong passion for the blues burns brightly in Nothing But The Blues. The film – which was broadcasted once in the U.S. on PBS in 1995 and nominated for an Emmy Award – has been upgraded to 4K for its long-awaited official release. In addition to the film, Reprise will release a new soundtrack with more than an hour of previously unreleased live performances recorded in 1994 during the legendary guitarist’s tour supporting From The Cradle, his Grammy-winning, multi-platinum blues album.

The documentary and soundtrack will be released in multiple formats, including a super deluxe limited edition boxed set, CD, Blu-rRay, DVD, and digitally, on June 24.

Written and produced by Scooter Weintraub and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the documentary includes an in-depth interview with Clapton conducted by Scorsese. Throughout the interview, Clapton discusses his love for the blues and the profound impact bluesmen like Muddy Waters and B.B. King had on his music. Many of those artists (Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Walker) appear in the film through vintage performances, interviews, and photographs.

At the heart of the film and audio formats are Clapton’s performances of blues standards and lesser-known blues songs. The CD features 17 songs; the double LP 18, and the DVD and Blu-ray each contain 20 songs. Two nights at the Fillmore in San Francisco (November 8 & 9, 1994) were filmed and recorded during his acclaimed From The Cradle tour, and the highlights from the two shows were selected for this release. Likewise, Clapton’s longtime co-producer, Simon Climie, has remixed the audio from those performances from the original multi-tracking recordings.

NOTHING BUT THE BLUES and the accompanying soundtrack will be released on June 24 in multiple formats. The Super Deluxe Edition comes with the documentary on Blu-ray, the soundtrack on both 2-LP vinyl and CD, a bonus CD with four extra tracks “Driftin’,” County Jail Blues,” “Kid Man Blues,” and “It’s Too Bad,” and an exclusive hardcover book with memorabilia, including a numbered lithograph, 12×24 poster, Clapton guitar string set, custom guitar picks, and an exclusive bandana.

The documentary will be available separately on Blu-ray and DVD. Additionally, the soundtrack will be released as a standalone on 2-LP vinyl and CD. The music will also be available from digital and streaming services on the same day. Those who pre-order will have instant access to Clapton’s unreleased live performance of Freddie King’s “Have You Ever Loved A Woman.”

The previously unreleased live performances on NOTHING BUT THE BLUES serve as a vital counterpart to From The Cradle, which was recorded in the studio. While several songs appear on both (“Motherless Child,” “Standing ’Round Crying,” and “I’m Tore Down”), the performances are entirely different. A live performance of “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” remixed and upgraded to 4K is available now.

The upcoming soundtrack also includes songs that did not appear on From the Cradle, including Jimmy Rogers’ “Blues All Day Long” and Robert Johnson’s “Malted Milk,” as well as the standards “Every Day I Have The Blues” and “Forty-Four.”

Initially released in 1994 by Warner Bros. Records, From The Cradle was certified triple-platinum in the U.S., where it topped the Billboard 200. The album was certified gold and topped the charts to become certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in many countries.
