Elton John Partners With Jadu & Sweet To Raise Funds For Elton John Aids Foundation

0

Today, leading into NFT.NYC, global music legend Elton John announces his entrance into web3 by partnering with Jadu and Sweet to auction a one-of-a-kind Rocket Man Jadu Hoverboard NFT in addition to releasing a series of access tokens that give holders the opportunity to unlock a host of future fan experiences as part of the the Rocket NFT Club (nft.eltonjohn.com).

The Jadu Hoverboard auction begins at 10 am ET on Monday June 20 and will close on Wednesday Jun 22, 2022 at 6pm EST with all sales benefitting the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF).

Produced by Jadu, an Augmented Reality (AR) platform that puts web3 avatars at the center of gameplay mapped to the real world, the Rocket Man Hoverboard is the rarest of the 6,666 items within the Jadu Hoverboard collection. Designed by Voxel Bunny, who built Jadu’s iconic jetpacks and hoverboards, the design creatively references a keyboard pinball machine, paying homage to Elton John “Pinball Wizard” Video from 1975, built inside the chassis supported by classic Elton John features including iconic star glasses, piano keys and the actual musical notes from “Rocket Man.”

“As a fellow LGTBQ+ artist, it’s hard to put into words the pride I feel paying tribute to Elton John & his legacy which continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of so many,” said Voxel Bunny. “And knowing that my creation will play a role in helping to end the AIDS epidemic for the most vulnerable individuals and communities means the world to me,” said Voxel Bunny.

“Whilst I’m no metaverse expert (!) I wanted to make sure that my first NFT was something true to me, and collaborating with LGBTQ+ artist Voxel Bunny and Jadu on something so unique which benefits the Elton John AIDS Foundation for Pride month, was the perfect opportunity.” said Elton John “Web3 has the potential to bring people from across the world together like never before and I’m excited for the opportunities to connect with my fans in a vibrant and growing community.”

“Our team pours its heart into crafting virtual items that are expressive without constraint and allow collectors to develop a new relationship with their physical surroundings,” said Jadu founder and CEO Asad J. Malik. “It’s been a true delight to design our rarest Hoverboard with Elton John’s iconic body of work as an inspiration and we’re honored to play a small role in the Elton John AIDS Foundation fulfilling its mission to end the AIDS epidemic.”

Elton John has been on the frontline of innovation in music, fashion, and technology for over half a millenia. During his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, the release of these Elton John access tokens combines the innovative web3 world with Elton’s penchant for providing high-value opportunities accessible to his entire fanbase,” said Tom Mizzone, CEO of Sweet. “Together with Elton, we at Sweet look forward to continuing to reveal the additional benefits of the Yellow Brick Roadmap.”

The Elton John AIDS Foundation was established in 1992 and is one of the leading independent AIDS organisations in the world. The Foundation’s mission is simple: an end to the AIDS epidemic. The Elton John AIDS Foundation is committed to overcome the stigma, discrimination and neglect that keeps us from ending AIDS. With the mobilisation of our network of generous supporters and partners, we fund local experts across four continents to challenge discrimination, prevent infections and provide treatment as well as influencing governments to end AIDS. www.eltonjohnaidsfoundation.org

Jerry Garcia Foundation Announces August 1st Concert to Celebrate Jerry’s 80th Birthday

0

The Jerry Garcia Archive, a new community resource created to preserve the historical and artistic contributions of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest legends, will begin accepting community contributions this August and host a benefit concert to celebrate the launch.

The Jerry Garcia Foundation, in partnership with Starchive, announces a first-of-its-kind fan-enriched Jerry Garcia Archive Project.

The archive’s technology partner, Starchive, is the creation of Peter Agelasto, who serves as the lead archivist for the project. Agelasto, a former archeologist and music studio owner, originally developed the Starchive platform to organize and store digital content for his own artistic endeavors. He and Starchive co-founder Richard Averitt are providing their innovative software platform as a gift to the Jerry Garcia Foundation for the development and management of the archive.

“Building this collection with Jerry’s family and global fan base is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see how emerging web3 technologies influence and enrich the artist / fan / collaboration / experiment. No one has innovated more in this creative communal space than Jerry Garcia, and I’m grateful to help serve this culturally significant initiative around one of my favorite musicians and artists,” said Agelasto.

Agelasto and the Starchive team honed their software while working on the creation and curation of the Bob Dylan Archive. In 2021, Starchive was retooled to support any creator from day one for icons like Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia and everyone in between. Today Starchive supports more than 75,000 creators in every medium from around the world.

“It’s an honor and delight to work with Peter, Richard and the Starchive team. This creative integration will provide the community with a uniquely interactive and joyful experience of archival resources. We are grateful to the David Nelson Band for sharing their artistry on my father’s Birthday in support of the project,” said Keelin GarciaJerry Garcia’s daughter and co-founder of the Jerry Garcia Foundation.

A musical opening reception for the archive launch is scheduled to take place on the late Jerry Garcia’s 80th birthday, Aug. 1, 2022. In celebration, the David Nelson Band is scheduled to perform a benefit concert for the Jerry Garcia Foundation at the Blue Note venue, located in beautiful Sonoma County, Calif.

The David Nelson Band has been recording and performing around the country since the 1990’s. Its broad musical palette spans the “almost acoustic” style that Nelson played with Jerry Garcia to roots rock n’ roll and psychedelic country rock. The David Nelson Band performs Nelson’s compositions (and those co-written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter), select covers, and several Grateful Dead classics upon which Nelson appeared on the original album releases.

David Nelson (guitar/vocals) is known as the founding member of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Moreover, he was a longtime musical partner of Jerry Garcia, dating back to 1962 in the pre-Grateful Dead bluegrass band, the Wildwood Boys. Nelson was a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band (and appears on its 1988 album release Almost Acoustic and 2010 ‘s Ragged But Right). He performed on three Grateful Dead albums: AoxomoxoaWorkingman’s Dead, and American Beauty, playing the iconic electric guitar solo on “Box of Rain.”

U.S. Postal Service Honors Folk Singer Pete Seeger

0

The U.S. Postal Service will honor famed folk singer Pete Seeger with a stamp as part of the Music Icon series. Seeger celebrated the unifying power of singing together and promoting the role traditional music played in addressing social and political causes.

The first-day-of-issue ceremony will be held at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, RI.

Pete Seeger (1919-2014) promoted the unifying power of voices joined in song to address social issues. His adaptation of “We Shall Overcome” became a civil rights anthem. Led by his ringing tenor voice and emblematic five-string banjo, his sing-along concerts mixed traditional songs and Seeger originals like “If I Had a Hammer” and “Turn! Turn! Turn!” During his long career, the charismatic and idealistic performer became a folk hero to generations.

SiriusXM announces Top 16 communities in nationwide Music Town search

0

SiriusXM Canada announced the top 16 finalists in its coast-to-coast Music Town search, which began May 26. Voting is now open for the 16 communities competing at their chance to host headlining Canadian artists Arkells, Dallas Smith, Walk off the Earth, or 2Frères in their own backyard.

After receiving enthusiastic submissions from over 400 unique communities across the country, SiriusXM Canada narrowed down the entries to 16 finalist communities, across four different regions – Eastern Canada, Quebec, Ontario and Western Canada – based on heartfelt stories describing what makes each community special.

“The stories we received for SiriusXM Music Town are a testament to the true passion and pride Canadians have for their local communities and their love for live music,” said Paul Cunningham, SVP, Sales & Marketing, SiriusXM Canada. “Music Town is more than just a concert, it’s part of our ongoing mission to give Canadians greater access to local artists and deliver memorable moments you can only experience with SiriusXM.”

The shortlisted Music Town communities and featured artists are:

EASTERN CANADA (Arkells)

Corner Brook, NL

The most northern city in Atlantic Canada, the music-loving community of Corner Brook is a beautiful playground for sporting and outdoor enthusiasts. Throughout the pandemic, residents helped keep spirits up by sharing and creating music on social media.

Gander, NL

Known for its friendliness and hospitality, and made famous by the musical Come from Away, Gander became a safe place to land when all North American airspace was closed on 9/11.

Miramichi, NB

Situated between beautiful rivers and valleys on the east coast of New Brunswick, Miramichi residents know how to come together as a community to celebrate. The town is home to one of the country’s biggest cultural festivals, Canada’s Irish Festival.

Summerside, PE

This picturesque city by the sea has a big heart and loves to bring people together. Summerside attracts people to its community with its authentic Island experience and celebration of diverse cultural traditions.

QUEBEC (2Frères)

Blanc-Sablon

Named after the fine white sand of its eponymous bay, the lively yet tiny community of Blanc-Sablon serves as the gateway to the eastern end of Lower North Shore.

Mont-Saint-Hilaire

Located on the Richelieu River, Mont-Saint-Hilaire is an artists’ haven that sits in the mountainous Montérégie region of southern Quebec.

Rivière-du-Loup

Situated on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, Riviere-du-Loup charms with the salt tang of its sea air, its remarkable history, inviting nature, one-of-a-kind attractions, and colourful local festivals.

Sept-Îles

Nestled between land and sea, the stunning beauty and history of Sept-Îles has inspired local musicians for generations.

ONTARIO (Walk off the Earth)

Belleville

Located on the north shore of the Bay of Quinte, the beautiful community of Belleville is an underrated cultural destination in Southern Ontario. As a friendly community committed to supporting arts and culture, it would be huge thrill for Belleville to host its own big-name concert.

Orangeville

Located near Lake Ontario in Dufferin County, Orangeville has a thriving arts scene and an enormous love of music. Residents celebrate music at Orangeville’s own Jazz and Blues Festival, and the community loves to gather for a good time.

Timmins

Known as the “City with a Heart of Gold” Timmins is surrounded by untamed wilderness, rivers, and lakes, offering unlimited outdoor adventures. This small northern city also boasts a large Francophone community with more than 50 per cent of residents bilingual in French and English.

Uxbridge

Situated in the Oak Ridges Moraine, Uxbridge is a beautiful community currently rebuilding after a devastating tornado that struck the region earlier this spring. The town quickly rallied together to help friends, neighbours, and business owners, opening up their homes and offering support to those displaced by the tornado.

WESTERN CANADA (Dallas Smith)

Estevan, SK

Located in southeastern Saskatchewan close to the Souris River, Estevan is known as the sunshine capital of Canada, but recent plant closures have been challenging for the community. A local concert would help give the people of Estevan a bit of lightness and joy in this difficult time.

Lloydminster, SK/AB

Straddling Alberta and Saskatchewan, Lloydminster is Canada’s only border town with unparalleled community spirit. The past few years have been especially challenging due to the impact of the pandemic, but residents’ spirit and determination to help each other has not diminished.

Nanaimo, BC

Like the dessert bar after which it was named, this Vancouver Island port town offers much joy and sweetness to its residents, who enjoy a wonderful environment to live, work, and play. The city has a huge love of live music and a vibrant local music scene.

Sylvan Lake, AB

Located in central Alberta, Sylvan Lake is named after the 15 kilometre-long fresh-water lake that the town sits beside. This tight-knit community loves music and a good party, boasting a vibrant arts and cultural scene in support of local artists and musicians.

Time for Canada to Vote

Music fans across Canada are invited to cast their vote for their top town in each region from June 22, 2022, until July 11, 2022, at musictown.siriusxm.ca. Residents of the final 16 can increase the odds of their town winning by taking to social media using #SXMMusicTown to encourage additional votes and rally behind their community. On July 14, one town in each region will be declared a SiriusXM Music Town based on nomination stories and the total number of votes and rally points earned during the voting period.

“We’re energized by the incredible hometown stories and the country’s passion for live music,” said Sarah Blackwood, Walk off the Earth. “We can’t wait to hit the road with SiriusXM and celebrate with our fans!”

Arkells announce new album Blink Twice, share new song “Dance With You” ft. Cœur De Pirate and Aly & AJ

0

Arkells announce the official release date for their seventh studio record, Blink Twice, coming September 23rd via Virgin / Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company. The brand new companion album to the band’s current release, Blink Once, Blink Twice showcases a new collection of songs where Arkells continue to push their sound and creativity to a new level.

As Arkells stayed busy making music during the last two years, they always knew they would come out of the pandemic with two distinct records – Blink Once (47M+ streams) and Blink Twice. The first single “Reckoning” was released earlier this year and was followed by current radio single “Past Life” featuring Cold War Kids.

“Blink Twice is about going to new places and seeing the world with fresh eyes. You can either move through life and grow stubborn, or you can grow curious, says frontman Max Kerman. “We’ve never had an album with so many guest artists along for the ride. Everyone from Cold War Kids, to Aly & AJ, Tegan and Sara, Lights, Cœur De Pirate, Joel Plaskett and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. At our core we’ll always be a living, breathing soul band. But Blink Twice lets us be that and more.”

With no shortage of new music, the band has shared a brand new song “Dance With You” featuring Cœur De Pirate and Aly & AJ. Arkells premiered the song with a first spin of the track last weekend during Montreal’s F1 Festivities. The addictive dance track is accompanied by a glamorously retro music video, watch here.

“We’ve always loved French music. From 60s folk to modern electronic music, the sound of the language is unmistakably cool and romantic,” continues Kerman. “Once the song began to come together, we reached out to Beatrice (Cœur De Pirate) to pen the French verse. Our pals Aly & AJ sang on the choruses and the song immediately felt like nothing we’ve ever been part of before.”

“We are thrilled to be featured on this track,” said Aly & AJ. “And we’re happy to lend our vocals to this perfect summer jam to cut loose to”.

Béatrice Martin (Cœur De Pirate) said, “so happy I’m featured on this dance track fever dream of a song, with ROC legends Arkells and personal heroes of mine Aly & AJ. Max called me out of the blue and was like ‘write me a verse that sounds like we’re having a good time in a bar in Paris’ and as someone who had just given birth at the time of that call, I thought that was right up my alley.”

Arkells are gearing up this summer’s hometown extravaganza – THE RALLY – this Saturday, live at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, with support from Mt. Joy, K.Flay and Haviah Mighty. Due to overwhelming demand, the event will have an increased capacity, with last minute tickets available now. This will be the biggest show to ever hit Hamilton – the ultimate celebration of live music, friends and community, to over 25,000 people.

In celebration of The Rally, Arkells and the City of Hamilton have announced “The Rally Court” a brand-new basketball court refurbishment at Woodlands Park, set for a celebratory open tomorrow at 1:00 PM. “Beautiful shared public spaces are what build community,” says Kerman. “When Arkells are on tour, we love to be urban tourists – finding the best parks and neighborhoods that every city has to offer.”

You might know Alfonso Spears from the sitcom Silver Spoons, or Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, or even the Pepsi/Michael Jackson commerical running in the mid 1980s, but did you know he also did a marvelous video for sale teaching how to break and pop like he did? I’d buy this right now.

TURNSTILE Announces North American Tour

0

TURNSTILE have announced a fall headline tour of North America which will see the Baltimore band continuing their wildly successful “TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION TOUR” ALONGSIDE special guests and hometown acts Snail Mail and JPEGMAFIA. The upcoming tour kicks off on October 3rd at NYC’s Brooklyn Mirage and includes stops in Asbury Park, Orlando, St. Louis, Louisville, Chicago and more [tour itinerary below].

TURNSTILE have also shared an official music video for “NEW HEART DESIGN,” which is featured on their widely celebrated album GLOW ON. Shot on 16mm film during the sold-out first leg of “THE TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION TOUR,” the clip is directed by TURNSTILE’s own Brendan Yates and frequent collaborator Ian Hurdle.

TURNSTILE made their return to network TV last month performing “BLACKOUT” on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon – Watch it HERE. The performance follows TURNSTILE’s recent appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Series.

Recorded with producer Mike Elizondo and co-produced by TURNSTILE vocalist Brendan Yates, GLOW ON which staked its claim as one of 2021’s top releases, earning “Best of” honors from: NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Billboard, Stereogum, SPIN, Vulture, The FADER, The Ringer, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Esquire, FLOOD, Uproxx, Consequence, Paste, Revolver and more. It found TURNSTILE once again charting new ground for hardcore, expanding stylistic boundaries and celebrating new possibilities. 15 tracks devoid of borders, boundaries, or entry obstacles, only abundant imagination, heart, and grooves plucked from all corners of the musical spectrum.

GLOW ON features “MYSTERY”- which reached Top 5 at Alternative Radio – “HOLIDAY,” “NO SURPRISE,” and “T.L.C. (TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION),” all four of which appear on TURNSTILE’s TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION EP and companion short film. GLOW ON also includes guest features from Blood Orange on “ALIEN LOVE CALL,” and “LONELY DEZIRES,” with additional vocal contributions on “ENDLESS.”

Selected as Stereogum’s Album Of The Week, Senior Editor Tom Breihan wrote “Before GLOW ON, TURNSTILE were already a truly special band, a ray of exploding energy. With this album, they’ve hit dizzy new heights…They’ve made a classic. I can’t even imagine what they’ll do next.” Pitchfork awarded the album ‘Best New Music’ attesting “The Baltimore band’s spectacular fourth record is all groove, riffs, and passion,” with The Recording Academy noting “The through line of all this is a lack of fear—of pushback, of resistance, of excommunication—that defines TURNSTILE.” NPR observed, “TURNSTILE has the ability to lure even the most poptimistic listener with spectacular hooks,” and Vulture hailed GLOW ON as “one of the best rock albums of the year.” Billboard affirmed “Ready or not, TURNSTILE is breaking through,” with FLOOD hailing the album as “An unforgettable magnum Opus.”

Comprised of Brendan Yates (Vocals), Franz Lyons (Bass/Vocals), Brady Ebert (Guitars), Pat McCrory (Guitars), and Daniel Fang (Drums), TURNSTILE’s brand of youth-minded, youth-driven hardcore punk is intent on breaking down barriers, sonically and ideologically.
