“Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.”

“We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album Unlimited Love, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it and tune in to our new SiriusXM channel Whole Lotta Red Hot,” says the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Mick Jagger To Release Theme Tune For Brand-New Apple Original Espionage Series “Slow Horses”

0

Mick Jagger has co-written, recorded and performed the theme tune for the highly anticipated Apple Original series “Slow Horses,” with Academy Award-nominated film composer Daniel Pemberton. The brand-new track, titled Strange Game, will be released on Friday, 1 April 2022 via Polydor Records / Universal Music to coincide with the series premiere of “Slow Horses,” which will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on Friday, April 1.

Based on a series of acclaimed books by Mick Herron and starring Academy-Award winner Gary Oldman, “Slow Horses” follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5 – Slough House on the outskirts of London. Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the brilliant but irascible leader of the spies who end up in Slough House due to their career ending mistakes. The six-part series also stars Kristen Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Olivia Cook and Jack Lowden.

The atmospheric and infectious title track Strange Game captures the series’ dark and mischievous premise, and the surreal world of espionage and exclusion the main characters find themselves in. Underpinned by Jagger’s powerful and eery vocals, the poignant, moodily strutting theme tune, which references elements of the show’s original score, encompasses both contemporary off-kilter sound design and delicate piano arrangements, highlighting the narrative of yearning for the days to “dance with the big boys again”. Jagger and Pemberton have created a title theme that not only feels instantly iconic but one that also cleverly references many aspects of the show’s multiple storylines.

Track producer and co-writer Daniel Pemberton, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2021 for his work with the singer Celeste on the song Hear My Voice and recently nominated for a BAFTA for his score to “Being The Ricardos”, is best known for his work as a film composer, where his credits include “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse”, “The Trial Of The Chicago 7” “Oceans 8” and “Yesterday”. He is also responsible for creating the original score and soundtrack of “Slow Horses” to be released soon via Universal Music. The sync of the series’ title track Strange Game was secured by BMG.

Over the past four decades, Rick Springfield has worn many hats as an entertainer and performer. The creator of some of the finest power-pop of the ’80s, a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician who has sold 25 million albums and scored 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including “Jessie’s Girl,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody,” and “Human Touch.”

He’s an accomplished actor who starred opposite Meryl Streep in the feature film Ricki and the Flash and gave a chameleonic performance as the creepy Dr. Irving Pitlor in HBO’s prestige drama True Detective, earned great reviews for his portrayal of Lucifer on the CW hit Supernatural and most recently played the insane Pastor Charles on FX’s worldwide hit series American Horror Story.

In 2019, Springfield, released his seventeenth studio album, “Orchestrating My Life.” It has been a long and fruitful affair, and one that has gifted him with a powerful connection to his legions of devoted fans, who pack his annual fan getaway events, as well as the nearly 100 shows a year he performs both with his band and solo in an intimate “storyteller” setting that he captured on the 2015 CD/DVD and concert film Stripped Down.

The tour also marks the first time in over 20 years that lead singer Colin Hay has put a band together as Men At Work, dedicating the setlist to the seminal band’s repertoire.

John Waite, another giant MTV-era star, has enjoyed massive success not only as a solo artist with the hits “Missing You” (No. 1) and “Change “ (Top 10) but also as the lead singer of the highly influential power pop band The Babys and the supergroup Bad English. The Babys are best known for the hit songs “Isn’t It Time” and “Every time I Think Of You,” while Bad English scored a No. 1 hit with “When I See You Smile.”

Kitchener, ON Alt-Rockers THE BOYS & I Light Up a Lead-Off Single That’s “White Hot”

0

Rock ‘n’ Roll will certainly never die as long as there are new talented and exciting artists fueling the flames. Enter alt-rock outfit The Boys & I, poised to add some serious combustibility to the Canadian hard rockers club with their new single, “White Hot.”

As the first riff of “White Hot” hits with a wallop, it’s immediately apparent that this Kitchener, Ontario-based four-piece means big rock business. Then, when lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Blacktop digs into “You’ve got the passion, you’ve got the fire”, it’s signed, sealed, and delivered, baby.

What’s this song about? What a lot of fast and furious rock songs are about — and rightfully so.

“It’s always about a girl, isn’t it?” muses Blacktop. “Though there is the odd short story with a melody, the vast majority of our songs come from my hardships, insecurities, triumphs, and well… Trying to impress a girl.”

You’re white-hot, baby
And I’m a moth to the flame
You’re driving me crazy
But I don’t mind being insane

“White Hot” is the attention-grabbing lead single introducing a five-song debut that the boys have put the final touches on for a Spring 2022 release. Recorded last fall at notable Uxbridge, Ontario’s Chalet Studio where the band could soak up the ambiance left there by Rush, Crown Lands, and Platinum Blonde to name a few, the all-original EP pulls from a sizable self-written cache of songs.

“Two of the songs were co-written with lead guitarist, Marc Reilly,” explains Blacktop. “Two of the other songs, however, got their beginnings lyrically as far back as 2008 and 2009. With around 30 original songs we rotate through during live shows, we got to pick the best of the best from our repertoire.”

In addition to Blacktop and Reilly, the other boys in this powerhouse band are bassist Adom Postma and drummer Nathan Bonassin. Prior to the pandemic, The Boys & I built up a burgeoning local following, stage by stage, that helped them mount a successful Kickstarter campaign to send them into the studio just in time to hit the ground of the impending re-opening of 2022 running and rocking.

In 2019, The Boys & I headlined the King St. Food Truck Festival in Kitchener and opened for JUNO Award-nominated local heroes, Courage My Love. In September 2020, they released their debut single “That Ain’t Me Anymore”, which has racked up well over 50,000+ streams to date and received regular airplay on various local and college radio stations.

Consequently, the group made the shortlist of nominees for Best Local Band in both 2020 and 2021 with The Record’s Reader’s Choice Awards. To help thank their local following, The Boys & I debuted “White Hot” on Kitchener/Waterloo’s CKMS 102.7 FM on release day, February 18, and hit the stage for a celebratory set at Descendants Beer & Beverage Co. that evening.

Now, it’s time for The Boys & I to break out beyond the Ontario breadbasket and scorch the rest of the country with their unique, firebrand rock ‘n’ roll.

Toronto Tabla Ensemble + Bif Naked Release New Single “Prayer for the Mother”

0

Ground-breaking musical collective Toronto Tabla Ensemble and legendary Indian-born Canadian artist Bif Naked mystify with cutting-edge sonics and sophisticated grooves on their latest jaw-dropping single, “Prayer for the Mother.”

Celebrating their 30th anniversary, the song lands alongside Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s blistering new album, For the Love of Tabla — an 11-song LP that dazzles listeners start to finish with some of the best tabla playing in the world.

Their eighth studio release, TTE’s enchanting founder and artistic director Ritesh Das continues to put the tabla, a twin-hand drum popularized in northern India during the 18th century, in the spotlight. “Normally the tabla gets lost or buried under all the other instruments in a song so, for this album, I mixed each track to bring the tabla up so you can hear it prominently within all the other sounds,” Das explains.

While the entire album defies expectations, a distinctive energy radiates from their latest release. “Prayer for the Mother” is a technically brilliant composition that draws on unique instrumental configurations that continue to assert TTE as a musical tour de force and one of Canada’s most prestigious and creative exports. The effortless fusion of rhythmic tabla percussion and rock n’ roll sensibilities serve as a sonic mechanism to communicate the tremendous power of woman and motherhood, and Canadian icon Bif Naked’s hypnotic lyrics accompany Das’s lightning-fast vocalizations to elevate “Prayer for the Mother” into the music stratosphere.

Beyond “Prayer for the Mother,” For the Love of Tabla is bursting with a worldly charm reflective of the diversity found in every musical moment, and an all-star cast of renowned artists assembles to bring TTE’s latest musical masterpiece to life.

“For The Love of Tabla” features a cacophony of musical talent that has shared a harmonious relationship with TTE over their storied career — including longtime collaborator and Taiko master Kiyoshi Nagata, violinist/composer Miamon Miller, drummer Dale Anne Brendon, and sitarist George Koller, to name a few.

Recording TTE’s latest album during a global pandemic was not easy, and all of the sensational artists featured on the release played remotely all across the globe to bring the album to fruition.

Thankfully, however, the collective of passionate artists found a way to make it work. As Das says, “I think members and performers took advantage of the situation and turned it into something positive.”

While Das acknowledges traditional Indian sounds are featured on the album, he emphasizes, “I don’t do traditional Indian music.” To Das and TTE, music has no geographical boundaries, declaring, “I take the essence of North Indian classical music and blend it with other styles.”

Over the last three decades, TTE has wowed audiences playing some of the biggest stages around the world. As they’ve brought their intricate music to the masses, TTE has won and been nominated for numerous creative awards including the Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement in composition, the Independent Music Award for Best World Traditional Song, and a JUNO Award nomination for their enigmatic record, Firedance. With a myriad of accolades under their belt, Das and TTE continue to push their art as a way of uniting and educating listeners. As Das suggests, “if you can educate people about the culture, I think you can eliminate a lot of racism.”

All are welcome to commemorate Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s For the Love of Tabla, a CD release party is set to take place on March 19th at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre Theater. Soul-stirring performances from TTE will be captured in-person and live-streamed beginning at 7 PM. Head to TorontoTabla.com/events for more information.

Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s exceptional single “Prayer for the Mother” from their jaw-dropping album For the Love of Tabla is available on CD and digital platforms now.

Folk Songstress JACKIE K Celebrates Gratitude in Hopeful ‘70s-Inspired “Dandelions Everywhere”

0

Sometimes the longing for Spring, whether literal or metaphorical, is so palpable as to be an ache. That’s how Canadian alt-folk songstress Jackie K was feeling in the middle of an online workshop in the middle of the pandemic when she wrote her new single, “Dandelions Everywhere.”

Fresh from her recently released EP, Look for the Little Things, the song arrives as simultaneously hopeful, wistful, and full of melancholy cheer as Jackie K sings about nostalgia for something she doesn’t yet have.

Backed by a full band — piano, ukulele, strings, guitar, and sax — “Dandelions Everywhere” has the glorious, innocent ’70s feel of the Carpenters or the 5th Dimension (think “Wedding Bell Blues”). The song breaks into a chorus of ‘Dandelions everywhere/Now the snow has gone’ and we’re right there with Jackie in those early, sunny, anticipatory days of Spring that make life worth living.

Dandelions, of course, aren’t the most beautiful or glamorous flower; in fact, they’re technically a weed — but that’s the point, the North Battleford, SK artist muses. “This song was written during a Songstudio workshop in February of 2021, sitting in my basement on an online meeting app,” Jackie recalls. “Being ‘sick of winter,’ ‘sick of Covid,’ and ‘waiting for Spring’ was the general feeling. My co-writer Evelyn Saungikar and I knew the season was coming — sooner for her in Toronto, than me in Sask, and that we would even be excited about dandelions!”

Finding joy and hope in even the tiniest things is what the album, recorded at Riverdale Recorders in Edmonton, AB is all about. “It’s important to always remember to look for the little things,” Jackie says. “During stressful times, it’s even more important to find moments of gratitude.”

Look for the Little Things also includes the track “Green Heals Me,” another song about the transformative power of Spring. “I did have several people ask me if it was a song about pot,” Jackie considers. “I hadn’t been thinking that, but it would work!”

The four-track RP also plays host to the song “Night at the Opry,” a tune inspired by a field trip to Memphis and Nashville Jackie took with her music students in 2020 right before Covid shut everything down. Rounding out the release is “In My Oasis,” a high-energy track also inspired by nature and the little things, and written about a teacup full of purple flowers.

Jackie K’s musical endeavors are mainly a family affair; her husband, Tom Kroczynski, is her bass player, while her son Connor Newton is her sax player, and her son Sean Davis Newton, on guitar and percussion, also engineered, produced, and mastered her album. The rest of the band is rounded out by Phil Rodda, a drummer from Edmonton, and Patrick Whelan on fiddle.

When she isn’t writing or performing, Jackie teaches band and guitar to high school students at North Battleford Comprehensive High School. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Art, and is a member of SaskMusic, SOCAN, AFM#553, BMI, SAC, and the Americana Music Association.
