SON OF JAMES Rush Releases New Single “Mama Never Told Me” Against Alarming Rise of Asian-Canadian Hate Crimes

0

Canadian band Son of James harnesses a fusion of musical influence to highlight the rise in discriminatory attacks against Asian-Canadians during the Covid-19 pandemic, with his heart-stopping new single, “Mama Never Told Me.”

Dripping with heart and soul, “Mama Never Told Me” is a sonically smooth experience filled with soulful guitar playing and stellar saxophone work. Rich embellishments reveal themselves in the form of brilliant piano playing and soaring vocal performances. “Mama Never Told Me” tells a relatable tale about the most important woman in our life with all of the rhythmic complexity that Son of James is known for.

“Mama Never Told Me” finds its origin when Son of James founder Shon Wong noticed the alarming increase in Asian hate crimes as the pandemic raged on. “The vigilante in me prayed that an attack on an Asian woman would happen right in front of me so I could exact vengeance for that woman right then and there.”

As if the world had stopped for that moment, the sudden realization of his mother’s own experience came flooding into view. “Knowing what my mom and many other immigrant Asian mothers sacrificed and endured to make a life in a foreign country. It made me think of all things my mom never told me about her struggle until my father passed when I was 20.”

Fast forward to the month before Mother’s Day, and all of the elements seemed to fall into place for a musical tribute worthy of all mothers. The lyrics practically poured out through the tears and onto the page.

“When the time has come
I will carry you
When you’re all alone
I will comfort you

For the rest of your days
Don’t you ever be afraid
I owe it all to you.”

With the pandemic affecting the rest of the world, the recording process for “Mama Never Told Me” had to be re-strategized. A talented group of musicians brought the recording to life from the get-go, including guitarist/bassist/pianist Adam Richards, accomplished cellist Michelle Kwan, and percussionist Jason Overy. Jonathan Reichert’s slick guitar fills, and Eric Tsang’s hypnotic saxophone work hits you right as Jackie Nguyen breaks your heart with her enchanting vocal work. These elements are brought together to create a rhythmic synthesis between art and life previously inexperienced by audiences.

Son of James founder Shon Wong was bitten by the artistic bug from a young age through his grandfather’s career as a professional Chinese opera actor. Wong’s early life was spent practicing martial arts and physically training himself to deal with the bullies that plagued him. When faced with the tragic loss of his father, James Wong, Shon found solace and comfort in music. While in China, his drum and guitar lessons would be the catalyst to managing grief and reclaiming his life. A long and winding road littered with more tragedy would lead Shon Wong to form Son of James and proudly represent his heritage through a combination of Asian instrumentation and rock n’ roll, developing his signature Chynatruckerfunk sound in the process.

Super Producer CHRIS BIRKETT Puts Two Years of COVID, Climate Change & Crass Excess in the Rear View with “2022”

0

When we reached the end of 2020, it could certainly be said that “never has there ever been a year like this.” Then, 2021 came along and upped the ante with more chaotic uncertainty. Now, with just one-third of another year behind us, British-Canadian singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-award-winning producer Chris Birkett is musically posing the question that’s on everyone’s minds: ‘What about you, 20-2-2? in this, his new single “2022” — available now.

New Year’s Eve makes most of us reflective of the year that was and anticipatory of what’s to come but, for Chris Birkett, it also generated a creative spark.

On “New Year’s Eve 2021, I was reflecting on the events of the previous year and wondering if we would have a year like the last two years,” recalls Birkett. “Climate change issues, space stations for the super-rich, conspiracy theories, and of course, the COVID restrictions all had a major effect on society.”

‘Isn’t it the year COVID’s gone? Isn’t this why we’re holding on? Now, we’re in the year 20-2-2’

In addition to the devastating effect the pandemic has had on public health, there have been equally devastating side effects for small businesses and those who make their living in the arts — like Birkett does.

“COVID-19 personally affected me and other musicians in a big way,” he notes. “Most of the venues that I had been playing in had shut down. We were all struggling to survive and rely on government aid.”

Is 2022 a recovery year or a rehash of the previous two miserable years with unwelcome new crises like the Russia-Ukraine War? That’s the main question that Birkett poses among other burning questions in his new, rhythmic pop-rock anthem. With an insistent and infectious riff and groove that underlines the urgency of putting distance between us and the years gone by, “2022” even gives a new, pandemic-inspired purpose to a classic hit by The Police when Birkett pays vocal homage to it at the end of the bridge: ‘The Brave New World is now the scared new world Everyone can sing the song – “Don’t Stand So Close To Me”’

A producer, arranger, and sound engineer on a slew of international, award-winning projects, Chris Birkett is also an accomplished guitarist and a prolific songwriter, and creator of six albums of his own music; two were recorded and released in the UK with the band Omaha Sheriff and produced by the legendary Tony Visconti (David Bowie, The Moody Blues), and four solo albums. Two were released while Birkett lived and worked in France from 1993 to 2011. Making his home in Canada since 2012, Birkett has also released Be Creative featuring contributions from Glenn Milchem (Blue Rodeo) and Rik Emmett, and 11:11 as the band The Free Spirits. In February 2021, he released the one-off single “Precious Love” for his documentary filmmaker wife Joan Prowse.

Birkett’s diverse music reflects a wide range of sources from which he draws inspiration. “My ideas for songs come from observing society, humanity, and life on earth,” he says. “I have been a truth seeker all my life and when I discover a new truth I like to share it using the Universal language of music.”

His love for sharing that creative passion has led Chris Birkett to some of the biggest successes of his varied and inspiring career, which began as a guitarist and background vocalist for the 1960s UK pop band The Love Affair and touring their hit “Everlasting Love”. An expansion into sound engineering and producing while in the UK and beyond has led him to collaborate with an eye-popping A-list of international artists including Talking Heads, Dexys Midnight Runners, Alison Moyet, The Pogues, Bob Geldof, Quincy Jones, Mel Brooks, and Steve Earle, as well as to produce Sinéad O’Connor’s massive #1 hit, “Nothing Compares 2 U”. All told, these and other collaborations have sold over 100 million records and earned four Canadian JUNOs, a GRAMMY, a Polaris Music Prize and three international AMPEX Golden Reel Awards for excellence in the music business.

Birkett’s longest and most fruitful collaborative relationship has been with the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie. He has played guitar with Sainte-Marie since 1993, and co-produced five albums with her — including Running For the Drum (2009), Power in the Blood (2016), and Medicine Songs (2017). Birkett is also producing and co-writing with a number of up-and-coming Indigenous artists including Inuit singer-songwriter Angela Amarualik for the Ottawa-based label Hitmakerz.

In addition to currently co-producing Buffy Sainte-Marie’s new album project, Birkett plans to release a new solo album, Songs from the Kauai Hotel Room, as well as a collection of fun-loving songs with his new collective The Happy Campers in the coming months.

2022 Prism Prize Special Award Honourees Announced

0

The Prism Prize, an annual awards event that recognizes outstanding artistry in music video production, announced today the four multi-talented artists selected as the 2022 Special Awards recipients. These Special Awards honour Canadian creatives for their achievements and contributions to the music video industry in Canada and internationally, and will be presented at a live screening and awards presentation at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Thursday, July 7, 2022 in Toronto.

“The level of musical and artistic talent that exists in our country is second-to-none,” said Louis Calabro, Interim CEO at the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and the Founder of Prism Prize. “In our tenth year of the Prism Prize, we continue to discover talent at a higher rate than ever before. Not only are these artists making some of the best music in the world, but they are serving to elevate our country’s incredible arts scene through music videos. It is very rewarding to recognize these creatives who are giving back to our industry in a major way, and we look forward to celebrating them on July 7.”

The 2022 Prism Prize Special Awards honourees are:

The Hi-Fidelity Award (supported by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters) recognizes recording artists who utilize music video in innovative ways; with previous recipients including Crack Cloud in 2021, Daniela Andrade in 2020, Clairmont The Second in 2019, and Grimes in 2018. The 2022 award is presented to Chiiild.

  • From Montreal, Canada, Chiiild has spent years honing a unique blend of pop, R&B, soul and jazz behind closed doors and just released their debut project, “Synthetic Soul.” Chiiild uses music to tell stories about diversity, ask questions about humanity, and unify people over shared personal experiences. Taking influence from music as diverse as D’Angelo, Tame Impala, Pink Floyd and Marvin Gaye, they’ve created an expansive timeless sound that is uniquely genre-bending yet still somehow reminiscent of something you’ve heard, or felt, before.

Established to celebrate a unique approach to music video art, The Lipsett Award is presented to Iris Kim. Previous recipients include Gennelle Cruz in 2021, Tranquilo in 2020, Soleil Denault in 2019, and Karena Evans in 2018.

  • Iris Kim is a Toronto-based director who appreciates the dramatics of a swooping dolly-in, a tight edit and juicy visuals. Her attraction to storytelling is driven by honest conversations, quiet and loud personalities and vivid moments, which is ultimately, the formula she exclaims, makes for one interesting film.

Recognizing an exceptional contribution to music video art on the world stage, the Special Achievement Award (supported by The Slaight Family Foundation) is presented to Sammy Rawal. Previous recipients include Jordan Oram in 2021, Bardia Zeinali in 2020, Lacey Duke in 2019, and Cherie Sinclair in 2018.

  • Director/Digital Artist Sammy Rawal has earned international attention for his original, hyper-stylized approach to image-making featuring bold colour, choreography, and innovative VFX. Sammy’s work is informed by a mashup of culturally diverse influences, fashion and hip-hop. He has brought his signature quick-fire style to commercial campaigns, music videos, 3D inspired video portraits, and digital installations for clients such as Cardi B, Lizzo, Kelis, Elton John, Reebok, Twitter, Axe, and Chanel. His work has been shown at the BFI Southbank, Art Gallery of Ontario, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Montréal, and nominated at the UK Music Video Awards, the Berlin Music Video Awards, and the Juno Awards. Sammy’s passion for LGBTQ+ rights flourish through his work and commercial projects; most recently, Sammy directed the social campaign for Dan Levy’s “See with Love ” eyewear which assists small businesses, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and entrepreneurs located in historically disadvantaged communities.

Presented to a Canadian trailblazer who has demonstrated excellence within the music, music video and/or film production communities, in the lead-up to the presentation, the Willie Dunn Award (supported by Telefilm Canada) is presented to Mustafa. As the recipient of this award, Mustafa will receive a $2,500 honorarium and will be asked to select an emerging Canadian creative to spotlight during the live screening and awards presentation and to be the beneficiary of $2,500. Previous recipients include Leanne Betasamosake Simpson in 2021 and Laurieann Gibson in 2020.

  • Twenty-five year old singer/songwriter Mustafa Ahmed grew up fighting. He would do so firstly as a child growing up in Toronto’s Regent Park community, matching up with other children his age at the behest of the older kids from around the way. Somehow, it did not harden him. He would continue fighting, though now against stereotypes, as an adolescent poet dispelling notions of who Black Muslims from Regent Park were with every stanza of his continuously celebrated poetry. He would attempt to fight again, this time on behalf of his immediate community, as a member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Youth Advisory Council, an effort that helped him realize his mission would be better served by amplifying the stories he’d collected over the years through song. And that is how we got Mustafa, child of Sudanese Muslim immigrants, one time Pan American Games Poet Laureate, cherished collaborator of acts like Majid Jordan, The Weeknd, and Khalid, and the artist whose debut project When Smoke Rises aims to exalt the Regent Park MC whose legacy Mustafa fights for now, Jahvante “Smoke Dawg” Smart.

Assets for all 2022 Special Award recipients are available here.
