Whether it’s hearing the layers of instruments move all around, catching the subtle breath a singer takes between lyrics, or being enveloped in a wave of melodies, nothing compares to hearing music live in Dolby Atmos.

In addition to their Las Vegas residency, the rock legends are also gearing up to release Aerosmith – 1971: The Road Starts Hear (UMe) on CD and digital formats on April 8.  This rare recording from 1971 was recently discovered in Aerosmith’s Vindaloo Vaults and was originally only available as a limited-edition cassette and vinyl release for Record Store Day in 2021.  The heavily sought-after RSD release quickly sold out and debuted on the Billboard 200, hitting No. 2 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, No. 12 on the Top Rock Albums chart, No. 13 on the Vinyl Albums chart, and No. 19 on the Top Album Sales chart.  The Road Starts Hear can now be preordered/presaved, HERE. In addition, the band’s official online store features a new 1971 collection of exclusive merchandise, available HERE.

Aerosmith – 1971: The Road Starts Hear includes previously unseen archived photos, images of the original tape box, and liner notes written by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke with new interviews and comments from the band about this long-forgotten recording. With seven extraordinary tracks, this historic document showcases the early, unbridled talent of the future Hall of Fame members including a nascent version of “Dream On,” which they would later record and release on their 1973 eponymous major label debut. The Road Starts Hear also features early recordings of gems such as “Somebody,” “Movin’ Out,” “Walkin’ The Dog,” and “Mama Kin” all of which would also later be recorded for their landmark debut. Other tracks include “Reefer Head Woman,” which would later be recorded for their 1979 album Night In The Ruts, and “Major Barbara,” a song that would be featured on their 1986 release Classics Live.

SiriusXM Launching ‘BASIC!,’ A New Original SXM Podcast Exploring Pop Culture During the Rise of Cable TV

0

SiriusXM announced today the upcoming launch of Basic!, an original SXM Podcast series, produced in conjunction with Pantheon Media. Hosted by media veteran Doug Herzog and TV critic Jen ChaneyBasic! explores the glory days of cable television, celebrating an era in pop culture when networks like MTV, Comedy Central, FX and ESPN changed the television landscape with groundbreaking, innovative programming.

The show will revisit cable’s low-budget, quirky beginnings all the way up to the Emmy Award-winning premium dramas of the modern era. Basic! will feature interviews with the stars, key players and creative visionaries that helped make cable TV the most important utility in any American home. The podcast will also zero in on unforgettable milestone moments in basic cable history, from Live-Aid to the Monday Night Wrestling Wars, from CNN’s game-changing 24-hour news coverage to the birth of reality TV.

Herzog and Chaney will anchor the conversations in this new podcast, creating an oral history as they go along. In each episode they will be joined by guests who thrived and starred on cable TV including Jimmy KimmelAmy Schumer, Fab Five Freddy, Cindy CrawfordNeal BrennanTim Gunn and many more. From the 80s to the present day, Basic! takes a closer look at the influence and impact that cable had on pop culture over the last 40 years.

“As a career cable weasel, I’m thrilled to bring the secret history of basic cable to ears everywhere,” said Doug Herzog. “It never had the same respect of network television, HBO or even the streamers who threatened to make it obsolete. But with a chip on its shoulder, it managed to change the TV landscape forever.”

“With streaming options proliferating by the minute — seriously, two new platforms were launched in the time it took me to say the beginning of this sentence — it seems like a perfect time to revisit the early years of basic cable and track its evolution and impact on the TV we watch today,” said Jen Chaney. “This podcast will be fun, conversational and, hopefully, educational. With Basic! in the world, hopefully no child will ever have to wonder again who Beavis or Butthead was.”

Beginning May 18, the Basic! podcast will be available on Stitcher, SiriusXM’s mobile app, Pandora, and all major podcast listening platforms. Episodes of Basic! will also begin airing on SiriusXM’s Volume (channel 106) this spring.

Doug Herzog is the former president of Viacom Music and Entertainment group where he oversaw MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, TVLand, Spike and Logo, among other cable channels.  Jen Chaney is a TV Critic for New York Magazine and Vulture. She is also an author and journalist who writes about movies, television and pop culture, and has written for numerous publications including The Washington PostNew York Times, Esquire and Salon.

SiriusXM is available to subscribers in their car, on their phone and connected devices at home with the SXM App. Streaming access is included for most subscribers. Go to www.siriusxm.com/ways-to-listen to learn more.

Jamal Joseph Remembers the Poetry of Tupac Shakur

In this video, Columbia University Professor Jamal Joseph recites and remembers the precocious poetry of his godson, the legendary hip-hop artist Tupac Shakur. He reads from a booklet of Haikus written by Tupac in support of Jamal and other black panthers imprisoned during the early 1980s at Leavenworth Penitentiary. This Haiku booklet, to be offered in Sotheby’s auction The Art and Influence of Hip Hop, is at once a powerful expression of love and solidarity as well as a window into the burgeoning genius of a future superstar.

Phoebe Bridgers Launches Exclusive SiriusXM Show ‘Saddest Factory Radio’ On SiriusXMU

0

GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter and Saddest Factory Records label CEO, Phoebe Bridgers and SiriusXM announced the launch of ‘Saddest Factory Radio with Phoebe Bridgers,’ a monthly show available on SiriusXMU (ch. 35). The show premieres Thursday, March 3 at 6 p.m. ET.

Saddest Factory Radio will fall in line with the label’s aesthetics and promises “outside-of-the-box thinking and audio trust falls.” Host Phoebe Bridgers will guide listeners through artist-to-artist conversations and, of course, play her favorite songs. The show will also showcase Saddest Factory Records artists such as MUNA, Claud and more.

“In my personal life, I have always had a radio show,” says Bridgers. “Punishing my friends on road trips with hours of dirges and ambient music, I can’t wait to do it professionally.”

Bridgers started Saddest Factory Records in October 2020 following the release of her critically acclaimed sophomore album Punisher. Since then Saddest Factory Records, a play on the word “satisfactory,” has championed a community of emerging talent.

Bridgers, herself, has garnered four GRAMMY® nominations for “Best New Artist”, “Best Alternative Album,” and “Best Rock Song” and “Best Rock Performance” for her single “Kyoto.” Punisher also earned Bridgers her first Billboard #1 on the Emerging Artist Chart.

Saddest Factory Radio will air the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. ET and PT with additional encores on the following Friday at 10 a.m. ET, Saturday at 3 p.m. ET, Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, and Tuesday at 12 a.m. ET.

Five Classic Uptown Records Albums From Jodeci, Guy, Heavy D & The Boyz, & Christopher Williams Are Available Again

0

Celebrating one of the most storied labels in R&B and hip-hop, Universal Music Enterprises reissues a suite of five classics from Uptown Records available now. The label proudly presents the definitive versions of these albums with unreleased tracks, remixes, and more. Guy’s The Future (Expanded Edition), Heavy D & The Boyz’s Big Tyme (Expanded Edition), Jodeci’s Forever My Lady, Jodeci’s Diary of a Mad Band (Expanded Edition), and Christopher Williams’s Changes (Expanded Edition) arrived at all DSPs today.

Embodying the spirit of the “New Jack Swing” movement, New York R&B phenomenon Guy—Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall, and Damion Hall—shined on their second full-length offering, The Future. After landing on November 13, 1990, it captured #1 on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart and scaled the Top 20 of the Top 200. It eventually went platinum and spawned the smash “Let’s Chill,” cracking the Billboard Hot 100 as well as ascending to #10 on the Hot Dance Single Sales Chart and #3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart. Meanwhile, “D-O-G Me Out” reached #8 on the Billboard US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks and #15 on the US Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. The Expanded Edition boasts a staggering 20 new tracks.

Meanwhile, New York hip-hop juggernaut Heavy D & The Boyz catapulted into the Top 20 of the Billboard Top 200 and seized #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart after hitting the streets on June 12, 1989. It went platinum off the strength of timeless East Coast bangers such as “We Got Our Own Thang,” “Somebody For Me,” and “Gyrlz, They Love Me.” It would be the swan song for late bandmate Trouble T Roy. The Expanded Edition touts 7 additional tracks.

Jodeci introduced themselves with their earth-shaking debut Forever My Lady on May 28, 1991. Upon release, it soared to #1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums Chart and Top 20 at Top 200 at #17. Out of three Hot 100 singles, “Come and Talk To Me” climbed into the Top 15. This iconic R&B opus went triple-platinum in the US with sales of over 3 million and a total of 8 million copies worldwide. The Expanded Edition houses 24 more tracks.

Diary of a Mad Band remains an American R&B classic from Jodeci. Uptown Records unveiled the record just before Christmas 1993 on December 21, and it gifted the world the historic first appearances from Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and Sista, while Redman also pulled up for a feature. Diary of a Mad Band notably marked the group’s second #1 on the R&B Album Chart. Plus, it would be highlighted by the #1 R&B smash “Cry For You,” #2 “Feenin’,” and Top 15 “What About Us.” Not to mention, “My Heart Belongs To U” charted for 20 weeks on the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart. It became quadruple-platinum in the United States, moving 6 million units worldwide. The Expanded Edition completes the vision with 15 extra tracks.

Christopher Williams first shared his second album, Changes, on December 29, 1992. Beyond peaking at #63 on the Billboard Top 200, it vaulted to #12 on the R&B Albums Chart. The single “I’m Dreamin” climbed to #1 on the Billboard US R&B Songs Chart and soundtracked the end credits of New Jack City. Plus, “Every Little Thing U Do” broke into the Top 10 of Billboard’s US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks chart at #7. The Expanded Edition features 11 more tracks!

These stand out as just a snapshot of Uptown Records’ legacy. Founded by the late Andre Harrell in 1986, the label served as the first home to everyone from Mary J. Blige, Father MC, and Soul for Real to The Notorious B.I.G. It invariably set the blueprint for nineties R&B and hip-hop, and its influence grows stronger with each decade as evidenced by these reissues.

Be on the lookout for more soon.

The Decemberists Announce Tour Dates Arise From The Bunkers! 2022 Tour

0

The Decemberists have announced a Summer 2022 North American tour ARISE FROM THE BUNKERS!

Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy described the upcoming tour in a note to fans:

“We’re wiping away the accumulated grime from windows and revealing, for the first time in a very long time, the glimmer of sunlight. We see the green dappled leaves, the soughing tree limbs, the pearly clouds dotting a wide sky. Is this re-emergence? Perhaps!

In celebration of such an event, we Decemberists felt a bit antsy to revisit the wide-open road, and do it sometime in the summer months, where we can sometimes be outside. Ergo: we are proud to announce The Decemberists’ first tour since — god, what was it — 2018, I think. ARISE FROM THE BUNKERS! TOUR 2022.

We’ll be applying our rusty fingers, feet, and vocal cords to songs from all across the width and breadth of our catalogue — and, should the muses oblige, we might try a few new ones out as well.”
