Alex Lifeson Is Auctioning Off Some Amazing Guitars And Rush Items

0

Part of Julien’s “Music Icons” auction happening on May 20th, 21st and 22nd, “Property From The Archives of Alex Lifeson” will feature over 60 vintage guitars and other career memorabilia from the personal collection Alex Lifeson, the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist and co-founder of Rush. One of the greatest rock groups of all time, selling more than 40 million records worldwide during the band’s four-decade history. You can check it out here.

Highlights from the collection include…
– A 1976 custom-built Gibson ES-355TD, aka “Whitey, played by Lifeson throughout most of his career with Rush. “Whitey” is featured on all albums from “A Farewell to Kings” to “Test for Echo,” and can be seen played by Lifeson on stage during all Rush tours from 1977 to 2015 as well as in many of the band’s music videos. This splendid guitar was part of Rush’s most explosive era of creativity. Alex Lifeson: “I purchased this guitar in 1976, it was custom-built in Kalamazoo just for me. It has been my main guitar and is the iconic Alex Lifeson guitar.”
– A 1970 Gibson Les Paul acquired by Lifeson during Rush’s inaugural tour and played extensively on all Rush albums and tours from “Fly By Night” and “2112” to “Hemispheres.”
– A 1971 Jose Ramirez acoustic guitar used by Lifeson to record all classical-style tracks on the album “Hemispheres,” including “The Trees” and “La Villa Strangiato.”
– A 1976 Gibson Dove acoustic guitar played on numerous tours and used by Lifeson to write “Closer to the Heart” and other songs from the 1977 Rush album “A Farewell to Kings.”
– A 1976 Gibson J-55 acoustic guitar used by Lifeson to compose Rush’s platinum-selling album “2112” as well as “A Farewell to Kings” and served as the main acoustic guitar on “Natural Science” and “Camera Eye” from “Permanent Waves” and “Moving Pictures.”
– A 1980 custom Hentor Sportscaster played by Lifeson on most Rush albums since “Moving Pictures,” and was the main guitar used on the recording of the album “Grace Under Pressure.” This guitar was favored by Lifeson as his primary instrument for soloing – in particular the solo for the band’s hit single “Limelight,” and can be seen in the music videos for “Vital Signs,” “Countdown,” and “Enemy Within.” The Sportscaster’s heavy yet versatile sound embodies Rush’s bold sonic explorations of the 1980s and Lifeson’s growth as a soloist during this time.
– A 1981 Gibson Howard Roberts fusion guitar that served as Lifeson’s main guitar during the “Moving Pictures” tour.
Additional items on offer will include concert and tour ephemera, passes, and photographs as well as original lyric sheets.

Born as Aleksandar Živojinovic, August 27th, 1953 in Fernie, British Columbia and raised in Toronto, Canada, Alex Lifeson received his first guitar for Christmas at the age of thirteen and never looked back, forging his own path towards rock and roll greatness. In the summer of 1968, Lifeson co-founded a band called The Projection with John Rutsey and Jeff Jomes who were later replaced by Geddy Lee and Neal Peart in 1974. With Lee on vocals, bass, and keyboards, Peart on drums, and Lifeson on guitar, the band would soon be known to the world as Rush.

After hitting the Toronto rock music scene and releasing their first single, a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away,” the band released their self-titled debut album which contained their first hit single “Working Man” featuring Lifeson’s guitar work – hailed by Guitar World as having one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The popular fan favorite brought them to the U.S. and helped secure a recording contract from Mercury Records who released their next two albums, “Fly by Night” and “Caress of Steel.”

But it was in 1976 that the band would have their biggest breakthrough and worldwide recognition with the release of the album “2112,” considered Rush’s masterpiece, and a rock music landmark with a 20-minute title track divided into seven sections. The platinum selling album began Rush’s streak of sold-out arena tours in the U.S. and Canada and the phenomenon of its worldwide cult fan base. The group also released their first live album that same year, “All the World’s a Stage,” a two-disc LP recorded during a three-night stand at Massey Hall in Toronto.

The group’s next two albums, “A Farewell to Kings” and “Hemispheres” represent a further evolution in the direction of progressive rock and produced the hit single, “Closer to The Heart.”

Following the 1980 release of their top five charting album “Permanent Waves,” which featured the smash hit song “The Spirt of Radio,” Rush became one of the most successful bands in the world.

Their popularity soared to even greater heights with the release of 1981’s “Moving Pictures.” The blockbuster album featured their biggest and most revered classics, “Limelight,” “Red Barchetta,” “YYZ,” and “Tom Sawyer,” and became the band’s best-selling and most commercially successful album in the U.S. hitting number three on the Billboard Charts and selling four million copies.

Lifeson’s penchant for musical experimentation can be heard in the band’s 1982 album, Signals, featuring their U.S. Top 40 hit “New World Man” which included synthesizers and mixed elements of ska, reggae, and funk.

Rush transitioned back to the band’s classic rock sound of guitar, bass, and drums with Lifeson’s acclaimed work on the 1989 album Presto, 1993’s Counterparts featuring their Grammy nominated song “Leave That Thing Alone,” the 1996 album Test for Echo, and the 2002 album Vapor Trails – the first Rush album since the 1970s without keyboards and synthesizer where Lifeson used over 50 different guitars and was hailed by Guitar Player as “his most rabid and experimental playing ever.”

In 1996, Lifeson released his first solo project, Victor, named for the title track from the W. H. Auden poem, with both his son Adrian and wife Charlene also contributing to the album.

His dynamic body of work includes numerous instrumental contributions and guest appearances, such as the guitar solos of “Crying Over You” and “Holy Water” on Platinum Blonde’s 1985 album Alien Shores; Lawrence Gowan’s 1990 album Lost Brotherhood; guests tracks on Tom Cochrane’s 1995 album Ragged Ass Road, “Like a Girl” from I Mother Earth’s Scenery and Fish album; “The Little Drummer Boy” on the 1997 album Merry Axemas: A Guitar Christmas; “Anesthetize” on Porcupine Tree’s 2007 album Fear of a Blank Planet and “Sacred and Mundane” on the Tiles’ 2008 album Fly Paper.

In 2006, Lifeson founded the Big Dirty Band which provided the original soundtrack material for the popular Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, where he would later guest appear in the franchise’s later films as well as voice the character Big Chunk in the animated series.

Lifeson is also a composer and producer whose credits include the theme for the science-fiction TV series Andromedia; songs on the 3 Doors Down album Away from the Sun; Keram Malicki-Sanchez’s 2014 album Come to Life – playing guitar on the songs “Mary Magdalene”, “Moving Dark Circles” and “The Devil Knows Me Well,” and on Keram’s subsequent singles “Artificial Intelligence,” “That Light,” and “Rukh” as well as being featured on Marco Minneman’s 2017 release Borrego, Fu Manchu’s 2018 Clone of the Universe album and more.

Subsequent Rush recordings and tours include their 30th anniversary 2004 EP Feedback which featured their covers of Cream, The Who, and the Yardbirds’ songs; 2007’s Snakes & Arrows; the 2011 live album Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland; and 2012’s Clockwork Angels.

Rush ranks fifth for most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums, after the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kiss, and Aerosmith.

Lifeson’s awards and recognitions include induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013; ranking third in the Guitar World Readers poll of 100 greatest guitarists, and listing on Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time; as well as being made an Officer of the Order of Canada on May 9, 1996, along with Rush bandmates Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, and receiving the Governor General’s Award in 2012–the highest artistic honor in Canada. Additionally, Lifeson is a painter, golfer, aircraft pilot and part-owner of The Orbit Room in Toronto, Canada.

In 2021, Lifeson released two new instrumental songs, “Kabul Blues” and “Spy House,” and recently made headlines with the news of his self-titled debut LP from new band Envy of None, featuring bassist Andy Curran, singer-songwriter Maiah Wynne, and producer Alfio Annibalini, to be released on April 18, featuring a song dedicated to late Rush band mate and drum legend Neil Peart.

If you can’t make it out to Beverly Hills to bid in person, you can still watch all the action as well as bid online at Julien’s Live.

THE DIRTY BEAT Separates Scorched Earth Beneath Audience’s Feet with Heavy Folk “Birds”

0

Canada’s The Dirty Beat walks through hellfire and brimstone, separating scorched earth beneath the audience’s feet with the release of the supersonic new single, “Birds.”

Landing alongside The Dirty Beat’s self-titled new album, “Birds” is a song unlike any other with its unique instrumentation and compositional depth that rival the most prominent music production houses. As the brainchild and sole member of The Dirty Beat, Warren G. Funk channels the energy of the greatest hard rock legends while telling soul-wrenching tales of triumph and despair. Bone-crushing vocal harmonies and planet-shifting percussion take center stage as heavy-folk melodies fill listeners’ ears and open minds.

The release has been a long time coming for the Winnipeg-based artist who began his artistic journey singing and playing multiple instruments in Mennonite church congregations through his early years.

Eventually leaning on his love of bass guitar under the tutelage of numerous accomplished bassists, Funk would later graduate from the Contemporary Music & Technology program at Selkirk College on Canada’s west coast with a major in music composition.

The fiery self-titled debut album found in The Dirty Beat is the culmination of years of blood, sweat, and tears dedicated to all dreamers; after receiving a Canada Council grant in 2007, the first attempt at Funk’s debut album fell apart after several personal and logistical factors halted production.

A decade of self-imposed creative and public isolation passed throughout which the ghosts of unfulfilled dreams haunted Funk. Ultimately, the hopeful warmth of his wife and daughter was the jolt of electricity needed to push Warren G. Funk towards his artistic aspirations.

“Ultimately this album is about resilience and resurrection through love and the unbridled drive of creation,” he shares.

Funk’s commitment and sheer will to contribute meaningful art to the world is matched only by a seemingly endless palette of original sounds that distinguish The Dirty Beat from any other musical act out there. Taking a similar approach to legendary musician Jack White, Funk harnesses his skills as a multi-instrumentalist on an ever-expanding list of uniquely tuned instruments to create something wholly new.

Accordions replace electric guitars in this dazzling sonic showcase of the senses. The hybrid analog/digital studio setup also contributes a grittiness that compliments the overall recording.

And the heart-stopping “Birds” represents the latest effort by The Dirty Beat to reach listeners on multiple levels through the love of art and music.

0

2022 is the year that Montreal goes completely country, with the very first edition of LASSO presented by Bell in collaboration with Coors Original hitting town August 12 and 13, along with LASSO in the City on August 11, 2022. The world class modern country music festival, taking place on beautiful Île Sainte-Hélène at Parc Jean-Drapeau (one of the top festival sites in North America) is sure to thrill country fans, old and new, with some of the most inspiring artists of the entire genre coming together for a multi-day high energy hoedown.

LASSO is an opportunity for fans to live an exceptional experience, watching their favourite country acts play on an island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, overlooking the skyline of one of the greatest cities in the world, and the hotly anticipated lineup of artists booked for the festival’s first edition is here!

The inaugural lineup of LASSO will feature performances from some of the greats, including platinum-selling American singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley, who has a 10th album on the horizon and who’s excited to feel that fire from the festival crowd. Joining him on Friday is Nashville’s Old Dominion, playing in Montreal for the first time, who won big at the 2020 ACMA’s and CMT awards for the song One Man Band – they’ll be playing old material as well as hits from their brand new album, Time, Tequila and Therapy. Ashley McBryde, nominated for several Grammys over her illustrious career, will be adding a dose of badass Southern girl power to the lineup. Tenille Townes will represent the sound of Canadian country – something she is very comfortable doing, considering she won four awards at the 2019 Canadian Country Music Association Awards, including Female Artist of the Year, and three for the song Somebody’s Daughter which won Single, Song and Video of the Year.

The following day will be a boot bustin’ good time, with performances from the likes of already announced headliner, Luke Bryan, one of the hottest country artists in the world, as well as Kelsea Ballerini, the Tennessee native who won Best New Country Artist at the 2017 iHeartRadio Awards and who has already reshaped the sound of country music with her heartfelt songs. Riley Green, who is currently on tour with Luke Bryan, will be on hand as well – the former football-player-turned-country-star was a contestant on the CMT reality show Redneck Island, and he’s fixin’ for a good time at LASSO, along with Breland, an American singer/songwriter/producer who is definitely one of the country music figures pushing the genre in new directions with the addition of rap, R&B, and soul into his sound.

The local country scene will be well-represented throughout the weekend, with talented artists such as Matt Lang, Sara Dufour, Five Roses, Brittany Kennell and Léa Jarry. Stay tuned as more amazing acts will be announced in the coming weeks!

Hip-Hop Artist Rawmny Wildcat Unleashes Triumphant New Powerhouse Anthem in “Fearless”

0

Toronto hip hop artist Rawmny Wildcat channels energy and heart into an anthemic, hard-hitting production around the tropes and techniques that reinforced early 2000’s rap with his newest single, “Fearless (feat. CHXXX).”

The freshly cut single is set to be featured on his forthcoming album, WILDCAT — a release that will be “composed of songs that are personal and relatable, as I delve deep into my journey as a child born and raised in Ethiopia and moved to Canada as a young teen,” Rawmny reveals. “My life has been full of adventure and many challenges I had to overcome to get where I am today.”

Harkening back to the radio bangers that nothing short of defined the early aughts, “Fearless” is an amalgamation of Ludacris and Lil Wayne’s production styles — with a splash of Rick Ross for flavor.

Couple that with a feature from Rawmny (pronounced Raw Money) Wildcat’s close collaborator and friend, CHXXX, and you’ve got a recipe for success.

Finding himself quarantined during lockdown, as much of the world did, it was after being exposed to COVID and not sure what to do, or how to kill two weeks in solitary, that “Fearless” was written and recorded.

“While I was home, I was talking with CHXXX, who is a frequent collaborator and friend,” he recalls. “We got amped over a beat I was playing that was sent to me by my producer-friend from Chicago, Clark Make Hits. Chxxx really liked the hook, and he wrote his verse on the spot during that call.”

Turning a somber time in quarantine into a productive and empowering moment, the two got to work recording their verses. With seemingly all the time in the world, Rawmny Wildcat collected the takes and sent them over to producer and hitmaker, Clark Make Hits.

“I was glad I had my mic with me. I was able to record the song and make good use of the time. We both recorded our parts and sent the files over for mixing soon after.”

The spirit of triumph is deeply rooted in the production process of “Fearless”; the story of overcoming tribulation and creating a full-scale production during the heart of the quarantine isn’t lost on listeners looking for deeper meaning in the song.

In fact, it speaks to the character traits of both Rawmny and CHXXX to get something like this done without the assurances of meeting your collaborators and feeling their cadence out when creating a track together.

Working with a handful of bands and collaborators to hone his craft, Rawmny eventually teamed up with Toronto-based indie label, Motive Music Canada. The team worked together to release Rawmny’s 2020 album, Once Upon A Life.

Toronto Alt-Rockers The High Loves Bask in Warm Feelings of Trust in Sunny “Sure of It”

0

Being able to relax completely in another person’s presence is often rare and underrated. alt-rockers The High Loves crystallize the essence of that warm, light-hearted feeling in their mellow, melodic, and summery new single, “Sure Of It.”

The song begins with a shimmering tone over the sound of raindrops, and then two guitar countermelodies fuse to create a gentle, rolling, lo-fi super melody that evokes roller skating on the beach at the golden hour. Add an easy but energetic beat, and you’re in an afternoon where the sun’s putting a halo in your hair and shadows are long and graceful on the boardwalk.

The video for “Sure Of It” reflects this laid-back, sunny vibe, and makes use of slightly grainy ’70s-style film to capture the band playing their instruments on the beach.

The simplicity of the song was, ironically, hard-won. When the Toronto-based band sat down to write it, they kept making it more and more complex, and then ultimately decided to strip it back down.

“We kept trying to add more to the song, but it was always better without,” keyboardist Jeremy Urgo shares. “Simple is almost always more effective.”

Perhaps that’s because “Sure Of It” deals with deeper, more complicated issues of human trust.

“Trust is a lot of things,” the band expands. “It’s earned in drops and lost in buckets, hard to come by but easy to break; a doorway to sorrow in the wrong hands, and the only real key to the fullness of human experience when reciprocated. ‘Sure Of It’ is a reflection on that feeling, the one you get when you are brave enough to trust someone and reap the reward of genuine connection.”

“Sunshine, your eyes, make me feel so sure of it
Feel so sure of it
If you, want to, we can be so sure of it
Be so sure of it”

“It speaks to the almost religious experience of having faith in another person,” the band continues, “and the relief of finding a home in their ideas and safety in their arms.”

Formed in 2018, the group is composed of lead singer and guitarist Noah Monckton, lead guitarist Marko Stojanovic, keyboardist Jeremy Ugro, bassist Jake St. Jean, and drummer Jaden Spanier. Culling inspiration from ‘80s pop and early-aughts alternative rock, the band’s ethos is one of both serious fun and addictive music tugging on your consciousness, demanding to be played again (and again).

The band had their first show and debuted their first single in January 2018. Their Serotonin EP followed that same year. They toured Ontario the following summer and had a big win in November 2019 in the rock category of The John Lennon Songwriting Contest. January 2020 saw them performing at GRAMMY Week in LA, right before the pandemic. Lineup changes followed, with former bassist Matt Bawtinheimer and guitarist Mathieu Landry leaving the band. Lockdown was a fruitful time for the new lineup, and The High Loves released their Too Much Of A Good Thing EP this past fall.

A Plea to the Three Global Major Labels from Jack White

0

Jack White has called upon major labels to build their own vinyl record pressing plants in light of recent supply chain issues and manufacturing bottlenecks.

“At least once a week, without fail, someone will reach out asking me to help expedite their vinyl record manufacturing. It’s a natural thought… knowing that I own a pressing plant and have my own record label, “if anyone could help, it’s this guy!”

With industry-wide turnaround times for vinyl currently leaning towards the length of a human pregnancy, it’s obvious, in a world so contingent on being of-the-moment and timed just right (a single, an album, a tour etc.), these timelines are the killers of momentum, soul, artistic expression, and far too often, livelihoods.

I’ve done everything within my power to help. Third Man Records began a concentrated focus on vinyl in 2009 with hopes of exposing its wider potential to the farthest reaches of the music industry. In 2017 I furthered my commitment by opening Third Man Pressing… a plant which has always been open to anyone and everyone who walks in the door and wants to press a record, from bedroom hip hop artists to field recording documentarians. And in the last year, I’ve doubled down and invested in even more record presses, more employees to run them, and more shifts to try and accommodate the insane growing demand for vinyl product.

There are people who will say – isn’t this good for Third Man? More demand than you can handle? To which I say, even though Third Man benefits in the short term, in the long term it ultimately hurts everyone involved in the vinyl ecosystem given the bottlenecks and delays. Something needs to be done.

While the entirety of vinyl investment and framework in the past decade has originated from independent companies and investors, the bigger problems we now see require major solutions.

In this spirit, I turn to our collegial big brothers in the music world, Sony, Universal, and Warner, and politely implore them to help alleviate this unfortunate backlog and start dedicating resources to build pressing plants themselves.

To be clear, the issue is not big labels versus small labels, it’s not independent versus mainstream, it’s not even punk versus pop. The issue is, simply, we have ALL created an environment where the unprecedented demand for vinyl records cannot keep up with the rudimentary supply of them.

Across the globe, there are now a handful of NEW companies, building both automated and manual vinyl presses. It’s easier to purchase a vinyl press now than it has been in four decades. And with more ancillary innovators popping up every day helping advance every facet of the industry, this isn’t a difficult decision to make. It’s a no-brainer.

We’re all on the same team with the same goals. I truly believe that with a good faith investment in the infrastructure that got us here, we can continue on this upward trajectory and further inspire the worlds around us. Now is the time. Thank you.

JUNO Award Winning Singer-Songwriter Barney Bentall To Release New Album ‘Cosmic Dreamer’ On April 22

0

Soaring with sentiments of hope, love, longing, and loss, multi-Platinum selling, and JUNO Award-winning artist Barney Bentall plots a sonic constellation of Americana to traditional Folk with the upcoming release of his new album, Cosmic Dreamer.

Set for release April 22, 2022 via True North Records, the album includes the title track, “Cosmic Dreamer” — available now.

With special guests Ruth Moody, Valentino Trapani, and Adrian Dolan joining on three songs, the 11-track LP features nine new all-originals from the prolific artist alongside two covers — Bob Dylan’s “You Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” and Gordon Lightfoot’s “Shadows.”

Cosmic Dreamer marks the seventh solo release for Bentall and now numbers over 20 overall when including his JUNO Award-winning band, The Legendary Hearts, and his other releases with The High Bar Gang, Bentall Taylor Ulrich and The Cariboo Express.

“I wanted to experiment with other things and everybody, bless their hearts, was very good about it,” he shared in an interview of his ever-broadening range of roots, country, bluegrass — and even instrumental, as heard in his recent album RanchWriters, written and released with long-time friend, Spirit of the West’s Geoffrey Kelly. “It’s important for me to write songs and try different music styles. Why limit myself? To me, it’s just good music.”

COVID-19 caused Bentall to spend less time with other songwriters and musicians than he would have in the past, so Cosmic Dreamer has fewer co-writes than previous efforts.

Bentall co-produced the album with multi-instrumentalist Dolan, and much of it was recorded and mixed at Dolan’s Track + Trestle studio in Ladysmith, B.C. The album-closing “Cody Road” was recorded by The Drifter & The Preacher producer John Raham at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios.

Bentall wrote Cosmic Dreamer’s title track at Yellowpoint Lodge on Vancouver Island in late February 2020 while he was taking a course at Ladysmith Marine Institute to receive a new certification to allow him to continue to drive rigid-hulled inflatable Zodiac boats on Arctic expeditions for a travel company called Adventure Canada.

Cosmic Dreamer is available April 22, 2022 via True North Records.
