Deborah Cox to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame

0

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and CBC announced today that award-winning recording artist and world-renowned Broadway, television, film and fashion icon, Deborah Cox, will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at The 2022 JUNO Awards. Cox will be the first Black woman to receive the national honour. With a career spanning almost three decades, Cox has released six critically-acclaimed albums and has scaled the R&B and pop charts with six Top 20 Billboard Magazine R&B singles and thirteen number one hits on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play Chart. To celebrate her induction during The 51st Annual JUNO Awards on Sunday, May 15, 2022, Cox will perform live from Toronto’s Budweiser Stage. The induction and performance are presented by longtime JUNO sponsor, TD Bank Group. The 2022 JUNO Awards will be broadcast and streamed live across Canada, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages.

The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was established by CARAS in 1978 to acknowledge artists that have made an outstanding contribution to the international recognition of Canadian music. Cox will join the ranks of Canadian music icons including Alanis Morisette, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden, Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Oscar Peterson, RUSH, The Guess Who, The Tragically Hip, Sarah McLachlan and Shania Twain. In 2016 the Canadian Music Hall of Fame found a permanent home with the opening of Calgary’s Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. A new exhibition celebrating the career of Cox will open at Studio Bell on May 14. More details will be announced soon.

“I feel incredibly grateful to experience this true milestone moment,” said Deborah Cox. “Music has always been about community for me, and I am so thankful to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and CARAS for not only recognizing myself, but my family, friends and loving fans who have supported me and helped make my dream possible for the past 25+ years. As the first Black woman to become an inductee, I am honoured to have the chance to show our younger generations that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to with hard work, dedication and passion. I hope that my music can continue to bring peace, happiness and comfort to anyone who might need it, and empower people of all ages to follow their dreams and believe in themselves.”

“Deborah is a multi-dimensional artist who has been entertaining and captivating audiences around the world for over 25 years,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards. ”Her resounding voice and powerful performances have made her an international icon. We are so privileged to celebrate her talent and can’t wait to see her inspire audiences this spring in her hometown of Toronto.”

Born in Toronto, Cox grew up in a musical household and showed an early interest in music with influences including Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston, whom she calls her truest inspiration. She began performing professionally and recorded television commercials at age 12, and entered various talent shows in her teenage years before becoming a professional backup vocalist for Céline Dion. In 1994, Cox was signed to Arista Records by Clive Davis, releasing her self-titled debut album the following year. Her second studio album, One Wish, was certified platinum in the United States and had two Number 1 singles, “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here,” which became an instant hit and held the record for the longest running Number 1 R&B single of all time. After 14 weeks at the top of the charts, Cox earned a Billboard Music Award nomination for R&B Single of the Year, a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Award nomination, a Soul Train Award, a Lady of Soul Award and three JUNO Awards.

In addition to her reputation as an established recording artist, Cox has been recognized and awarded for her undying commitment to various social justice initiatives, including advocacy for LGBTQ2S+ rights, support for those living with HIV/AIDS, and the fight for human rights and equality for all. Cox was honoured with Black Music Honors’ Entertainer Icon Award in 2020, in recognition of her 25 ground-breaking years in the music industry.

Over the last few years, Cox has been expanding her identity as an artist, actress, creator and was appointed Executive Director for Alpha Magazines, a publication that strives to empower women worldwide. On top of her illustrious musical catalog, she has graced screens and stages with theatrical performances in Aida and The Bodyguard. Cox also attracted rave reviews for her role as Regina on BET’s First Wives Club and starring in the critically acclaimed HBO MAX series Station Eleven.

Cox was also honoured alongside Martin Luther King’s daughter, Dr. Bernice King and other change-making women at the 2021 Black Women in Media Awards for her impact on the entertainment industry. Following the success of her hit 2019 single “Easy Way,” Cox has new music on the way and is working toward the release of her seventh career studio album due out in 2022.

The 51st annual JUNO Awards, produced by Insight Productions (a Boat Rocker company), will make history on Sunday, May 15 as it broadcasts and streams for the first time from an outdoor venue at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, live across Canada at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos. Remy Shand Releases 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Of ‘The Way I Feel’ On April 22

0

Remy Shand’s influential debut, and only, album, ‘The Way I Feel’, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a deluxe edition with the addition of six rare tracks that are brand-new to streaming services, including four tracks that have never been released before in Canada and the U.S. The deluxe will be available April 22 on all digital and streaming platforms, and in the meantime, you can download or stream one of the rare tracks “A Day in the Shade.”

“A Day in the Shade” followed “The Way I Feel” as a single exclusive to Canada’s PureTracks, an early streaming service; the other bonus tracks, “Mai” and “Ripened and Consumed,” were previously available only on international editions of the album. Additional instrumental versions of the album’s three biggest tracks highlight Shand’s studio prowess, especially the extended instrumental version of “Take A Message.”

“My vision was to push through and create a solid platform for musical autonomy – the bedroom musician, the one-person band,” says Shand. “Twenty years later it’s the norm. Universal Music Canada and UMe/Motown understood the mission and the authenticity within. The album, music and statement will always be ahead of its time… and the message of love, eternal. It’s the way I feel.”

First released by UMC and Motown on March 12, 2002, ‘The Way I Feel’ was written, arranged and produced by Shand; he also performed all instruments.

In addition, music videos for “Take A Message,” “The Way I Feel” and “Rocksteady” will be officially available at all partners for the first time.

‘The Way I Feel’ received rave reviews, accolades and awards, including four GRAMMY® nominations; a JUNO Award winner for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year and nominations for Artist of the Year, Producer of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year; hit No. 1 for six consecutive weeks in Canada, where it is certified platinum; Top 40 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart; #15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart; and a top 5 chart success for the single, “Take a Message,” on the U.S. Adult R&B chart.

Remy Shand is a songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and self-producer, and his work is at once accomplished and deeply rooted, yet original. He is an artist who attacks the boundaries of R&B, pop and alternative with his own timeless fusion, as undeniable as it is unconventional.

Remy credits his musical education, in his hometown of Winnipeg, MB to a crate of classic albums salvaged by his dad from a club his construction crew was remodeling. Home-schooled through 10th grade, Remy enrolled at the local high school (mainly to play in the jazz band, whose teacher Remy would later hire for a recording session) but left after just one year. He’d started on acoustic guitar and bass around age 12, and his record collection provided his benchmarks. Here, My Dear, Marvin Gaye’s searingly honest chronicle of his divorce, became Remy’s favourite album and a musical bible: “I look at it as being taught by the masters — the geniuses will take you all the way.” Albums like Ann Peebles’ I Can’t Stand the Rain; the Isley Brothers’ 3+3; Marvin Gaye’s I Want You, Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life and the works of Rufus, Sly Stone and Steely Dan, among others, all became Remy’s sources as a musician, songwriter and producer.

Rolling Stones Announce ‘Live At The El Mocambo’ Album To Be Released On May 13

0

A legendary event in the incredible 60-year history of the Rolling Stones is being released in full for the first time on Friday, May 13th. Live At The El Mocambo marks the first official appearance of the group’s two famous secret concerts at the 300-capacity Toronto club in March 1977.

The album will be available on double CD, 4 LP black vinyl, 4 LP neon vinyl and digitally. It features the Stones’ full set from the March 5 show, plus three bonus tracks from the March 4 gig, newly mixed by Bob Clearmountain. Only four of the performances found their way onto the Love You Live album that followed in September 1977, which was dominated by tracks captured on the band’s 1975 and ’76 tours, with the full set having never been heard before.

As the Rolling Stones gear up for their 60th anniversary celebrations, Live At The El Mocambo is available for pre-order now. It is previewed by the release of two powerful tracks from the shows, “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll” and “Rip This Joint,” available on all digital services today. Listen to the tracks and pre-order Live At The El Mocambo here.

As the Stones took to the stage of the “El Mo,” a fixture of the Toronto music scene since the 1940s, punk and disco were both rearing into full view, supposedly ready to see off a band who had already been at the top of their game for 15 years. Over two nights, in an intimate space in one of their favourite cities, they were about to make that prognosis look foolish indeed.

The gigs became reality after the El Mocambo was identified as the potential home for a secret booking. A radio contest was organized in which the prize was tickets to see Canadian rock heroes April Wine, supported by an unknown band called the Cockroaches. Guess who they turned out to be…

On the nights, naturally, April Wine were themselves the opening act, and so it was that the Stones rolled back the years to the exhilarating club incarnation of their early years. Against all the odds, the band produced two nights of exhilarating music that they still talk about in Toronto, and in Rolling Stones legend, to this day.

It was a setlist for all seasons, from Muddy Waters’ “Mannish Boy” and Bo Diddley’s “Crackin’ Up” to staples such as “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and “Tumbling Dice,” and back to the blues with Big Maceo’s “Worried Life Blues” and Willie Dixon’s “Little Red Rooster.” There was the live debut of “Worried About You,” not heard in studio form until 1981’s Tattoo You, and more highlights from “Honky Tonk Women” to “Hot Stuff.” Forty-five years on, this is a trip back to the intensity of the Crawdaddy Club in the Stones’ earliest days, as revisited by the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.

J Balvin And Ed Sheeran Together For The First Time With A Revolutionary 2-song EP: “Sigue” & “Forever My Love”

0

Global superstars and cultural icons, J Balvin and Ed Sheeran, have teamed up to combine their unparalleled talent and musical prowess to deliver an unprecedented musical collaboration with a 2-song EP, featuring titles “SIGUE” and “FOREVER MY LOVE”, releasing today at 8pm EST.

The project was born out of an organic friendship between the two music legends when Sheeran overheard Balvin talking in the gym one morning and recognized his voice. What began as a conversation blossomed into a genuine friendship and, almost immediately, a collaboration was born.

“Sigue,” an upbeat reggaeton dance song, and “Forever My Love,” a beautiful love ballad, show Balvin and Sheeran’s unique ability to not only cross over between genres, but also demonstrate their expertise in diversifying the type of music they write and perform. The two have proven that when it comes to the language of music, there is no barrier. By combining the pop and reggaeton genres, this partnership promises to revolutionize and unite the world of music as we know it.

“Everything good takes time. Six months ago I was at the gym and told myself, “this guy looks like Ed Sheeran.” Well it was. We had a coffee and spoke about life and we there was a dope vibe. We bonded over simple things creating a genuine friendship – we even spoke about what it’s like to be a dad hehe. In NY we made plans to have a studio day and well you guys will see the outcome hehehe. The first two songs that we made were “Sigue” and “Forever my Love” and now they are coming to light. I wanted him to come to the world of Reggaeton and he invited me to his world as well. It was really cool hearing him in Spanish and we hope that you all love the songs as much as we do. Much peace and love.”–  J BALVIN

“I met J in a gym in New York last year – it was just me and him very early in the morning. I recognised his voice when he was on the phone so I just went up and said hi. We chatted so long, we ended up having lunch and then afternoon tea. Then just went to being mates who chatted nonstop. I was in New York at Christmas for shows and we decided to have one day in the studio that led to so so much more. The first two songs we wrote were ‘Sigue’ and ‘Forever My Love’ and I absolutely love them. He wanted to bring me into his world, and I wanted to bring him into mine. It was a proper challenge learning Spanish for this and I had so much fun doing it. Hope you love it as much as I do and look out for more to come.”–  ED SHEERAN

The two decorated and chart-topping artists collectively reach a total of 281 million people worldwide.
