John Fluevog Shoes Joins Forces With Jimi Hendrix

0

Noted footwear designer John Fluevog whose creations for more than half a century have elegantly and stylishly shod the feet of notables including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Jack White has announced a new collection created in conjunction with Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. the family-owned company that manages and safeguards the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. The designs exude a decidedly retro rock and roll aura as befits a collection of shoes and accessories inspired by the art, life and music of the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Drawing from Jimi’s lyrics, legacy and distinct fashion sense, Fluevog and his design team worked closely with the Hendrix family to pay tribute to the late music icon.

In announcing the launch, Fluevog commented, “I feel such a sense of privilege to be connected to a cultural icon at the level of Jimi Hendrix. We went deep into Jimi’s clothes, style and overall journey; one can envision him swinging down the streets of London in this collection looking perfect. We’re so proud of it and we’d like to think Jimi would be delighted with our collective efforts.” He went on to say, “It was truly a pleasure to connect and work with [Experience Hendrix President and C.E.O.] Janie Hendrix on this project.”

The venture was coordinated with Authentic Hendrix, LLC, the licensing arm of Experience Hendrix. Janie Hendrix was effusive in her praise for the endeavor. ““If ever a product line has drawn from the very essence of the Hendrix experience, this one has. Fluevog has truly grasped the signature style and energy of Jimi and created pieces that could very well have come out of his closet. The “wow effect” that Jimi unveiled every time he appeared is definitely there! Each intricate detail is a bold expression of his sense of fashion. I’ve long been a fan of John Fluevog’s designs, and I’m absolutely smitten with what we have worked together to create. I think the world will be equally dazzled!”

Among the highlights of the new line are The Tudor Jimi, a square-toed ankle boot with braided appliqué and The Stand Up Electric Lady, a tall platform boot with silk scarf lacing. Both styles will be coming in gold embroidery and custom devoré velvet variations. Jimi’s own handwriting is immortalized into the velvet used within the collection.

ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus Launches ‘Björn from ABBA and Friends’ Radio Show on Apple Music Hits

0

Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer and ABBA founding member Björn Ulvaeus today launches ‘Björn from ABBA and Friends’ on the Apple Music Hits global radio station. Björn is the latest artist to join the award-winning Apple Music radio lineup which includes shows hosted by The Weeknd, Elton John, Shania Twain, Mark Hoppus, J Balvin, and many more. This new four-part series features conversations with friends, collaborators, and artists about all things ABBA.

The inaugural episode of ‘Björn from ABBA and Friends’ features special guest Nile Rodgers, who joins Björn to share stories and discuss songwriting secrets, ABBA’s enduring influence, and the keys to their success and undeniable catalog. Additional guests include playwright Catherine Johnson, who penned the book of the stage musical and first film adaptation ‘Mama Mia!’, and creative director for the forthcoming ABBA Voyage concerts, Johan Renck.

“I’m excited to be bringing the show to Apple Music Hits because I have long wanted to ask some emotionally intelligent as well as intellectual people who know about ABBA about why they think our songs have lasted for such a long time — almost 40 years — because I don’t understand it myself,” said Björn. “Sometimes when I see the number of albums we’ve sold — which they say is around almost 400 million — I can intellectually grasp that, but emotionally I never have been able to because I don’t know why all this happened. I just know that we wrote our songs as best we could, and then recorded them as best as we could, and that was it. What happened afterwards was a phenomenon that I never quite understood. But maybe my guests here on this series will help me to understand it. Maybe they have some input that that I’ve waited for for so long. I’ve talked to several people about this already of course, but no one has come up with a really good answer, so I think that is in essence is what this this series is about. It’s about finally getting some questions that I’ve had for a long time answered”.

Listen to Björn from ABBA and Friends every day this week at 12:00p PST on Apple Music Hits or binge the full series anytime on-demand with an Apple Music subscription at apple.co/_ABBARadio.

BreakOut West: Home Edition 2.0 kicked off on February 2nd. Originally scheduled to take place in Winnipeg, MB from February 2-6, the event switched to an online format due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees can continue to register for BreakOut West here, to take part in the conference running until February 6th.

Born in 1940, Ray St. Germain grew up playing music and singing in St. Vital, a suburb of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He started out playing accordion but switched to guitar as a teenager because he thought he looked silly jumping all over the stage with an accordion. As a teenager, he performed all over Canada, travelling with Hal Lone Pine, Betty Cody and their son, jazz legend Lenny Breau. During that time, he performed on the bill with such greats as Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, and Johnny Horton. Since then, his music has taken him all around the world to places like Germany, Israel and Cyprus, as well as all across Canada. Throughout his career, Ray has participated in over 500 television shows, including a 13-year run of Big Sky Country. He’s done an Armed Forces tour and toured through 34 Indigenous communities. He won the Can-Pro Gold Award for the Best Variety Television Show in 1978, he’s a recipient of the Métis Order of the Sash from several Métis communities, he has won many awards from the Manitoba Academy of Country Music Arts Inc. including Top Recording Artist (1978), Entertainer of the Year (1978 and 1980), Best Male Vocalist and Best Song (1989), and he even received an Award of Excellence in 1986. Ray is well known for giving freely of his time and his talent to many charitable causes and their telethons. He has earned countless awards for his music throughout his career. In 1985, Ray received the Aboriginal Order of Canada, and in 2013 he received the Order of Manitoba and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Aboriginal Peoples’ Choice Awards. In 2010, he was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Ray was also the radio host/program manager at NCI FM on The Road Show and The Métis Hour x2. Ray is an icon of the Canadian music scene, but he’s never turned his back on his Métis heritage. He’s built a legacy that continues not only to enrich the musical culture of Manitoba, but the culture of one of the province’s founding peoples, the Métis. Ray earned the honour of singing the national anthem at the Winnipeg Jets game on April 24, 2021, to officially open their WASAC night (Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre night). The night is designed to celebrate Indigenous culture in Manitoba, which is why it was so fitting that Ray was involved, as yet another step on his journey, that has seen him share and promote his Métis and Indigenous culture.

Carole Vivier is a trailblazer of the Manitoba music industry. Serving as the CEO and Film Commissioner of Manitoba Film and Music for the past 26 years, she has played a role in the success of countless artist and industry careers. Carole was inducted into the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame in 2012, and was a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, which is awarded to Canadians who have made significant contributions to their community and country at large. In 2014, Carole was a recipient of the Order of Manitoba, the highest honour awarded for service to one’s province. In 2019, she was honoured with the creation of the Carole Vivier Scholarship for Women in Film. Since 1992, the Manitoba film and music sector has grown from an industry valued at $12 million to an estimated $270 million. A large part of this growth is related to the Manitoba Tax Credit, which Carole has been integral in policy for. She was advised that if she really wanted people to come to Manitoba, an incentive would be needed. She took this advice to heart and worked to get the attention of senior members of the provincial government. Every time an artist or film was recognized in a newspaper article, she would send it over to them. One day, someone said, “ok, you’ve got our attention.” With the help of these senior officials and industry alike, the incentive was officially introduced in 1997 to create more opportunities for the province’s talent, offering a 35% tax credit on all Manitoba labour. The Manitoba Film and Video Tax Credit Program is the most competitive tax credit in the country. In addition to her past work at Manitoba Film and Music, Carole was the co-chair of the 2014 Host Committees for both the JUNOS and BreakOut West Winnipeg. Carole is known around the world as an ambassador for Manitoba filmmakers, musicians, producers, creators and crew. Carole is a champion of independent artists in their earliest efforts, including Guy Maddin, The Weakerthans, Doc Walker, The Crash Test Dummies, Norma Bailey, Tanya Tagaq, and many others. Today, it is not uncommon, from Berlin to LA to Cannes, to meet people who have not only heard of Winnipeg, but are planning to shoot there, or know musicians there. That’s all due to Carole’s tenacity, dedication and talent.

The Watchmen (Daniel Greaves, Ken Tizzard, Joey Serlin, Sammy Kohn) are a four-piece rock and roll band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band was discovered by producer, Chris Wardman, while playing at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern. Wardman offered to produce the band, and they released their debut album, McLaren Furnace Room, in 1992. The single, Cracked, garnered the band significant airplay on rock stations, but was quickly eclipsed by the anti-spousal abuse anthem, Run and Hide, which became the band’s breakthrough hit. The band’s second album, In The Trees, was released in 1994. The record was a major success, confirming their place in Canadian rock with the hit singles Boneyard Tree, All Uncovered and Lusitana. The album was certified Platinum in Canada after selling over 100,000 copies. Their 1996 album, Brand New Day, included singles Zoom, Incarnate and Shut Up, which provided the band with their second JUNO nomination in 1997, for North Star Rock Album of the Year. 1998’s Silent Radar was the band’s return to commercial success, with the hit singles Stereo, Any Day Now, Brighter Hell and Say Something. That autumn, they won a MuchMusic award for Best Use of New Technology, owing to the inclusion of innovative web- and CD-ROM-based features on the Silent Radar CD. In November 2003 the band decided to go their separate ways. However, they decided that before they did so, they would perform one last short tour across Canada as a “Thank You” to their fans. The farewell tour included nine concerts in six Canadian cities and one American city. In the fall of 2008, the “classic” lineup of Greaves, Serlin, Kohn and Tizzard announced a small reunion tour. In 2009, the band released two new songs on their website: Trampoline and Miss Monday Morning. These quickly became popular with fans during shows performed that spring and summer. The band is active with their fans through social media, sharing rare photos and even a full-length live show download from a performance in Australia. With all the excitement that still surrounds them, The Watchmen continue to sell out shows across Canada year after year.

In 1999, 13-Year-Old Riot Grrrls Did A Doc About Them Being “Dirty Girls” And It’s Fascinating

Shot in 1996 and edited in 2000, this is a short documentary about a group of 13-year-old riot grrrls in Los Angeles who were socially ostracized at their school by their peers and upperclassmen. Everyone in the schoolyard held strong opinions about these so-called “dirty girls,” and meanwhile the “dirty girls” themselves aimed to get their message across by distributing their zine across campus. Liam Gallagher Debuts Single “Everything’s Electric”

0

Liam Gallagher continues to amplify anticipation for the May 27th release of his third studio album C’MON YOU KNOW with its larger-than-life first single “Everything’s Electric,” co-written by Dave Grohl, who also performs drums on the track, and produced by multi-GRAMMY Award winner Greg Kurstin [Adele, Harry Styles, Foo Fighters].

Liam Gallagher and Dave Grohl first met many years ago when Foo Fighters played with Oasis on tour. They’ve maintained a mutual admiration ever since, while speculation about a possible collaboration between the pair has risen in recent years. To craft the song, they melded the thunderous dynamics of Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” with the spiralling tension and danger of The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” With raw, rhythmic phrasing, this is as close as Liam’s iconic snarl comes to rapping and that punk-meets-hip-hop attack is underlined by boisterous bass. Meanwhile, slide guitar, piano flourishes and Liam’s haunting backing vocals pay tribute to arguably The Stones’ finest moment.

C’MON YOU KNOW follows the huge success of Liam’s previous studio albums As You Were (2017) and Why Me? Why Not. (2019), which established his iconic status for a whole new generation. Between his triumphs as a solo artist and his phenomenal success with Oasis, Liam has spent a combined total of almost six months at #1 across eleven chart-topping albums. Next week, Liam is set to give “Everything’s Electric” its live debut at the BRIT Awards, a striking first statement of the year ahead, which also features Liam’s biggest ever solo shows this summer including his two rapidly sold-out gigs at the UK’s Knebworth Park.

Today also brings news of a range of exciting new formats for the C’MON YOU KNOW album, all of which are now available to pre-order here. Liam’s official store offers a limited-edition cassette, while three new vinyl formats are available exclusively via specific retailers. Amazon and HMV both stock their own colored vinyl editions, while a clear vinyl is also available via select independent stores.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Return With 12th Studio Album ‘Unlimited Love’ On April 1

0

Red Hot Chili Peppers will unveil their new album and twelfth full-length offering, Unlimited Love, on April 1, 2022. It notably marks their first recording with guitarist John Frusciante since 2006 and first with producer and longtime collaborator Rick Rubin since 2011. To herald Unlimited Love, the Los Angeles band just shared the first single and music video “Black Summer.”

“Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.

We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album UNLIMITED LOVE, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it.”

Added Frusciante, “When we started writing material, we began by playing old songs by people like Johnny “Guitar” Watson, The Kinks, The New York Dolls, Richard Barrett and others. Ever so gradually, we started bringing in new ideas, and turning jams into songs, and after a couple of months the new stuff was all we were playing. The feeling of effortless fun we had when we were playing songs by other people, stayed with us the whole time we were writing. For me, this record represents our love for, and faith in each other.”

On lead track “Black Summer,” ethereal guitar underlines introspective lyrics as the rhythm unlocks a hypnotic drum groove highlighted by evocative bass. It quietly inhales only to exhale with a massive refrain, “It’s been a long time since I made a new friend, waiting on another black summer to end,” before a guitar solo echoes to the heavens and back. For the music video, the group teamed up with acclaimed director Deborah Chow [Disney+’s The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi]. The result continues a tradition of captivating cinematic visuals—with a twist.

Unlimited Love resumes a three-decade partnership with Rick Rubin [Johnny Cash, Adele]. Their creative collaboration spans legendary albums, including the diamond-selling Blood Sugar Sex Magik [1991], Californication [1999], By The Way [2002], and Stadium Arcadium [2006].

The interplay between the band borders on intergalactic once again—yet elevated to another stratosphere altogether. Unlimited Love represents the united spirit of four individual souls still fearlessly exploring the future of their eternal friendship and musical congregation.

“Here Ever After ”follows a staccato bassline down a rhythmic wormhole as the hook promises, “She’s the kinda girl that make you wanna go faster now.” And whether it be wrangling wild horns and boisterous bass on “Aquatic Mouth Dance” or the poetic dreamscape of confessional ballad “Not The One,” the album twists and turns with gleeful unpredictability On “Poster Child,” a funky riff spiked with wah pedal magic wobbles in tandem with the delivery as a blissful chorus takes hold. “The Great Apes” charges forward towards a primal clarion call. For nearly six minutes, “It’s Only Natural” slips in and out of hypnotic harmonies and magnetic grooves. The slinky funk of “She’s A Lover” bleeds into a chantable gang vocal and dancefloor-ready refrain, while “These Are The Ways” sees a soft melody give way to guitar and vocal catharsis.

“Whatchu Thinkin’” leans on head-nodding percussion as the vocals flutter with the tempo only for guitar to ignite the chorus. An analog synth choir colors the intro of “Bastards of Light,” while a heavenly crescendo elevates “White Braids & Pillow Chair” beyond the clouds. Hitting the highways, “One Way Traffic” revs up funk at an intersection of airy bass and drums. “Veronica” trades the band’s sunny Los Angeles for the South Side of Chicago and a near-cinematic story about the title character. Then, there’s “Let ‘Em Cry” where trumpet punctuates the momentum before peaking on an emotionally charged guitar solo. “The Heavy Wing” takes flight on a climactic burst of distortion and vocal conjurations. The ride culminates on “Tangelo.” Threaded together with delicate guitar and emotionally charged vocals, this otherworldly lullaby leaves off on a vibrant, vulnerable, and vital final note as it slips into the arms of feedback. Check out the full track listing below.
This summer, Red Hot Chili Peppers will launch their first tour in support of Unlimited Love. They’ve invited a dynamic cohort of guests along for the ride at select dates, including Anderson.Paak & The Free Nationals, A$AP Rocky, Beck, HAIM, King Princess, St. Vincent, The Strokes, and Thundercat.
