Sonic Reducers: The 2022 JUNO Award Nominees Are Out

0

Punch play to watch us run through this year’s top Juno nominees, talk about who got snubbed, discuss the increasing number of artists whose fame springs primarily from social media, and celebrate the fact that two albums up for awards this year have the F-word in their title. Sonic Reducers. One topic. Two music nerds. Five minutes. Everything you need to know.

And The 2022 JUNO Award Nominees Are…

0

The nominees for the 51st Annual JUNO Awards were announced today by The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) during a virtual presentation streamed on CBCMusic.ca/junos. This year’s winners will be revealed during the closing weekend of JUNO Week, at The JUNO Opening Night Awards Presented by Ontario Creates on Saturday May 14th and The JUNO Awards Broadcast on Sunday, May 15th.

Canada’s biggest night in music, hosted by international sensation Simu Liu will broadcast and stream live across the country from Budweiser Stage in Toronto at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages.

Montreal-born singer-songwriter Charlotte Cardin is this year’s top contender, leading with a total of six nominations including: TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year*, Artist of the Year*, Pop Album of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Justin Bieber and The Weeknd follow with five nominations each, a testament to the continuous global appeal of Canadian talent. Bieber has been nominated for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year*, Artist of the Year* and Pop Album of the Year; while The Weeknd is up for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Artist of the Year*, Songwriter of the Year* and Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year.

First-time nominees recognized with four nominations shine a light on the generation of talent emerging from TikTok, including Vancouver pop songstress JESSIA for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year* and Pop Album of the Year; and rising rapper Pressa for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Breakthrough Artist of the Year*, Rap Album/EP of the Year and Rap Single* of the Year. Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes also takes home four nominations for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice, Album of the Year*, Artist of the Year* and Pop Album of the Year. Artists with three nominations include world renowned vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Day Wilson for Songwriter of the Year*, Jack Richardson Producer of the Year* and Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year; and conductor and pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin for Classical Album of the Year (Solo Artist), along with two nominations in the Classical Album of the Year (Large Ensemble) category.

A collection of first-time nominees with two nominations include 347aidan for TikTok JUNO Fan Choice and Breakthrough Artist of the Year*; Allison Russell for Songwriter of the Year* and Contemporary Roots Album of the Year; Black Pistol Fire for Breakthrough Group of the Year* and Rock Album of the Year; Mustafa for Songwriter of the Year* and Alternative Album of the Year*; NorthSideBenji for Rap Album/EP of the Year and Rap Single* of the Year; and husband-wife duo Spiritbox for Breakthrough Group of the Year* and Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year.

In response to Canada’s evolving music landscape, CARAS announced the creation of new categories this year. Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year has been split into two awards: Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year* (2022 nominees include Adrian Sutherland, DJ Shub, Jayli Wolf, Shawnee Kish and Snotty Nose Rez Kids) and Traditional Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year (Fawn Wood, Joel Wood, Manitou Mkwa Singers II, NIMKII & THE NINIIS and Young Spirit).

Rap Recording of the Year has been broken into two categories: Rap Single* of the Year (anders and FRVRFRIDAY, bbno$, Charmaine, NorthSideBenji & Dj Charlie B and Pressa) and Rap Album/EP of the Year (Belly, Haviah Mighty, NAV, NorthSideBenji and Pressa).

Underground Dance Single of the Year has also been added to the list of categories, with BLOND:ISH, Carlo Lio ft. MC Flipside, HNTR, Jayda G and KOREA TOWN ACID each receiving a nomination.

TikTok returns as a Lead Sponsor of the JUNO Awards, as well as the title sponsor of TikTok JUNO Fan Choice and as the Official Voting Platform, where fans can discover and vote for their favourite nominees directly in-app, as often as they like. TikTok JUNO Fan Choice is the only fan voted award at the JUNOS, chosen by Canadian music fans who can vote as many times as they want. This year’s nominees include 347aidan, bbno$, Charlotte Cardin, Forest Blakk, JESSIA, Pressa, Justin Bieber, Loud Luxury, plus Shawn Mendes and The Weeknd who are nominated in the category for the seventh year in a row.

MusiCounts will recognize one Canadian music educator’s impact not only on students, but also their community and the music education field, through the MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award, presented by the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation. The 2022 nominees are Jewel Casselman (Lakewood School, Winnipeg, MB), Darren Hamilton (David Suzuki Secondary School, Brampton, ON), Sophie Jalbert (École Roy-Joly, Rivière-du-Loup, QC), Kelly Stronach (Mitchell Woods Public School, Guelph, ON) and Janell Toews (Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy, Canmore, AB).

Greta Van Fleet Announce North American Tour Dates

0

On the heels of their sold out Spring, 2022 Dreams in Gold arena tour Grammy-award winning rock band Greta Van Fleet announce new arena shows for this fall. Kicking off August 16 in Quebec City, QC the band will make stops in 42 cities across the U.S. and Canada; see below for a complete list of dates.

There will be a Fan Presale on March 2 and a Local Venue Presale on March 3, with general ticket on sale March 4 at 12 P.M. local time. The expansive new dates follow the band’s spring tour, which sold out over 100K tickets in just two days and kicks off coming up on March 10. Greta Van Fleet recently joined Metallica on February 25 in Las Vegas and announced two additional August dates with them recently.

Greta Van Fleet will be joined by a host of acclaimed artists on their fall tour, including The Pretty Reckless, Houndmouth, Durand Jones & The Indications, Fruit Bats, Robert Finley, Crown Lands, and Hannah Wicklund.

Earlier this year, the band’s Jake Kiszka partnered with Gibson to honor the SG, a seminal guitar in the rock ‘n’ roll revolution which celebrates its 61st anniversary this year. Watch his interview HERE.

The group is touring in support of their acclaimed sophomore album The Battle at Garden’s Gate, released last year to extensive chart and critical success. The album debuted at #1 Billboard Rock Album, #1 Billboard Hard Rock Album, #1 Billboard Vinyl Album, #2 Billboard Top Album Sales and in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. The album currently has 275K in sales with streaming numbers at 200 million and continuing to climb.

Forming in Frankenmuth, Michigan back in 2012, Greta Van Fleet consists of three brothers, vocalist Josh Kiszka, guitarist Jake Kiszka, bassist/keyboardist Sam Kiszka, as well as drummer Danny Wagner. Together they have performed across multiple continents, sold over two million albums worldwide, performed on late night television shows, topped the Billboard U.S. Mainstream Rock and Active Rock charts and won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2019.

Rocker ROBB NASH’s Story Supporting Teens With Mental Illness Continues With New “This Is War” Song

0

Robb Nash continues to be one of the leading musicians working, speaking out, and singing about mental illness.

Named an ‘Extraordinary Canadian,’ the award-winning Canadian rocker and Governor General of Canada Meritorious Service Medal recipient’s story is one for the ages. But one peek up the sleeve at the hundreds of names tattooed on his arm — plus his newly released single, “This Is War” — reveals so much more.

“The names are from over 900 suicide notes I’ve received from kids,” Nash explains. “Some of them have my lyrics as tattoos, too; it’s a mutual relationship of ‘go forth and conquer.’”

Alongside The Robb Nash Project’s new song, “This Is War,” and the forthcoming album of the same name, the skin-inked gesture is part of Nash’s long-held commitment to combat mental illness — a high-stakes conflict he personally endured.

Found with no pulse following a head-on collision, Robb Nash was resuscitated on the side of the icy road near his home in Winnipeg, MB. His skull was rebuilt with Titanium, and his lengthy recovery sparked a severe depression. “Frankly, I did not want to be alive,” he shares. “I was an athlete; my identity was lost, and that brought me to a very dark place for two-and-a-half years.

“Men in this society can feel like talking about our feelings or struggles is weak, so I kept it inside. One day, I picked up the guitar and started my entire journey into music to tell my story.”

While that journey included, at one point, a record deal on the table, it ultimately morphed into a motivational-meets-music tour telling his story, confronting stigmas, demonstrating purpose, and welcoming those most vulnerable to feel okay asking for help.

Now in its 11th year and counting, The Robb Nash Project has appeared before more than 500,000 people — mostly students across the country, as well as at maximum security prisons, and keynote speeches for the Psychiatric Association of Canada. He also works closely with Kids Help Phone, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and school counsellors to ensure students get the follow-up they need.

While the new album’s inspiration might have come from students coast to coast, the sound on This Is War is all Nash’s. Co-produced by Anthony Anderson and Steve Smith, the 13-track heavy rock release reveals the familiar full-throated rallying cry of anger, hope, and concern previously displayed across EPs Tell Me Why (2019), Live on Arrival (2020), and more. This is War marks the first release under Nash’s new partnership with Warner Music Canada.

“It all has the same goal: save lives,” Nash says of both his public health leadership and music — including This Is War. “I’ve realized you can have all the resources available, but if people aren’t ready to reach out for help, it’s no use.

“In that, I was trying to figure out what my role was,” he shares of both the album, and his ongoing ethos that’s earned him a rightful spot in Peter Mansbridge’s book, Extraordinary Canadians, as well the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

“I’m not a counsellor. I’m not a psychologist. I’m here to get the conversation started, and to let people know it’s okay to reach out for help.”

“This Is War” is available now. This Is War album is available June 10th, 2022.

Hip Hop Producer DJ VIEWS Taps Technical Wizardry of Arrested Development’s Speech & Dell-P with “Global Moves”

0

Australian producer DJ Views emerges from the lab harnessing the technical wizardry of rappers Speech and Dell-P as they deliver ‘90s inspired hip-hop track, “Global Moves.”

With the undeniable rap chemistry heard in sonic detail, DJ Views channels the hip-hop classics on the 1s and 2s. The beat is an ode to the iconic boom-bap style with heavy acoustic drums and hazy piano synths brimming with musical embellishments.

“Global Moves” is the latest example of DJ Views’ sophisticated and stylized approach to his craft. The artistic method of respecting the legends while having a firm grasp of what’s hot makes “Global Moves” a song with a timeless quality.

Standing on the shoulders of hip-hop giants, DJ Views knew he wanted to collaborate with artists he admired to create something meaningful. While working on his first project, “The Year After,” with UK producer Configa, he connected with the two artists who appear on “Global Moves.” He reached out to Dell-P, a rapper/songwriter out of Philadelphia who’s been steadily rising through the music industry after his award-winning debut album. The other incredible artist is Milwaukee hip-hop legend Speech (Arrested Development), whose rap cadence further contributes to the song’s timelessness.

Speech:

“Man I know that when my mouth opens
Another rap stereotype bout the south is broken
A total rebel on global levels – not bout the joking
Turn styles in the underground without a token”

Dell-P:

“Before the net I had a street buzz,
Been the trend before you knew what a tweet was,
I always give ‘em gems I don’t release duds,
The ones who make the most sense get the least love”

These efforts culminated in the recording of “Global Moves” during the lockdown in Sydney, Australia. DJ Views’ specific goal with his latest release is he “just wanted to send a positive message, show that real hip-hop is still alive and that tracks like this don’t need ego or curse words.”

DJ Views has been DJing and hosting parties for over 22 years. An executive chef by trade, he currently runs his independent outfit Gizmo Produktionz where he puts out music with some of the most exciting artists in the game. An emphasis on music production and beat-making began at the start of the pandemic, with numerous projects on the horizon.

The latest single produced by DJ Views featuring Speech and Dell-P, “Global Moves,” is available now on all music platforms.

Wet Leg Unveil New Single “Angelica” AND Announce “Chaise Longue” 7” repress AND Tour Dates

0

With the release of Wet Leg’s self-titled debut album just over a month away (due April 8th), the Isle of Wight duo (Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) are pleased to unveil their new single “Angelica”.

Named after Rhian’s oldest friend, “Angelica” was recorded in Hester’s living room, by bandmate Joshua Mobaraki. A mixture of the absurd (“She brought lasagne to the party”), the sardonic (“I don’t wanna listen to your band”) and social angst (“I look at my feet then I look for the door”), it’s a trippy, synth-kissed journey through parties and regrets. “It’s laced with disenchantment,” Rhian says. “Even though the chorus is ‘good times, all the time’. That’s just impossible, isn’t it?”

The video – self-directed by the band – was shot on the island and is an unbridled record of Rhian and Hester’s friendship complete with high-kicks, fisticuffs, kiss-and-make ups, vast amounts of hair and even more dancing.

Additionally, the sold out “Chaise Longue” 7” from last year is getting a repress and is available to buy here.

Pandora Launches “Digicore By SoundCloud” Station

0

Today, Pandora and SoundCloud team up to announce the launch of “Digicore by SoundCloud” – a new station surfacing pop’s next genre-bending evolution from a community of underground DIY artists that started on SoundCloud. Originating from SoundCloud’s award-winning music discovery series, “SCENES”, “Digicore by SoundCloud” is the first from a series of stations set to launch on Pandora to amplify the hottest rising music communities and culture-shifting collectives bubbling up on SoundCloud. Listen to “Digicore by SoundCloud” on Pandora here.

Following the successful launch of “The Lookout by SoundCloud” on Pandora last year, the “SCENES”-inspired stations provide a place for fans on Pandora to discover the latest underground communities shaping the future of music. Additional “SCENES” stations to be announced throughout the year.

“Digicore by SoundCloud” will spotlight music from a young, diverse, internet-inspired generation of innovative artists embracing boundless genre influences. Powered by fans and hand-picked by SoundCloud’s team of music experts, the station will feature artists like aldnangelusdltzkd0llywood1ericdoajuno, and midwxst, and more from SoundCloud’s original top 5 fan-favorite playlist “Pop’s Next Generation: Digicore” and “Digicore” short documentary.

midwxst says, “SoundCloud fostered a community that made me a lot of who I am today — both as an artist and a creative. It continues to be a breeding ground for experimentation and collaboration within niche communities of music makers as well as being the home for some of my most loyal fans. It’s a pivotal part of my music story and I am stoked to be part of its history.”

I appreciate SoundCloud for supporting the scene and really pushing us as a genre to the max,” says angelus. “It’s also exciting to see Digicore amplified with the help of Pandora and SoundCloud. Hopefully, it will open more doors for other artists and have them be inspired to start their own journey.”

Check out “Digicore by SoundCloud” now, and stay tuned for more “SCENES” stations to launch on Pandora in 2022.

My Next Read: “Eruption: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen” by Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill

0

Get a completely new look at guitar legend Eddie Van Halen with this groundbreaking oral history, composed of more than fifty hours of interviews with Eddie himself as well as his family, friends, and colleagues.

When rock legend Eddie Van Halen died of cancer on October 6, 2020, the entire world seemed to stop and grieve. Since his band Van Halen burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in 1978, Eddie had been hailed as an icon not only to fans of rock music and heavy metal, but to performers across all genres and around the world. Van Halen’s debut sounded unlike anything that listeners had heard before and remains a quintessential rock album of the era.

Over the course of more than four decades, Eddie gained renown for his innovative guitar playing, and particularly for popularizing the tapping guitar solo technique. Unfortunately for Eddie and his legions of fans, he died before he was ever able to put his life down to paper in his own words, and much of his compelling backstory has remained elusive—until now.

In Eruption, music journalists Brad Tolinski and Chris Gill share with fans, new and old alike, a candid, compulsively readable, and definitive oral history of the most influential rock guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. It is based on more than 50+ hours of unreleased interviews they recorded with Eddie Van Halen over the years, most of them conducted at the legendary 5150 studios at Ed’s home in Los Angeles. The heart of Eruption is drawn from these intimate and wide-ranging talks, as well as conversations with family, friends, and colleagues.

In addition to discussing his greatest triumphs as a groundbreaking musician, including an unprecedented dive into Van Halen’s masterpiece 1984, the book also takes an unflinching look at Edward’s early struggles as young Dutch immigrant unable to speak the English language, which resulted in lifelong issues with social anxiety and substance abuse. Eruption: Conversations with Eddie Van Halen also examines his brilliance as an inventor who changed the face of guitar manufacturing.

As entertaining as it is revealing, Eruption is the closest readers will ever get to hearing Eddie’s side of the story when it comes to his extraordinary life.
