0

Today the SOCAN Foundation, part of the SOCAN Group of companies, in partnership with Bandzoogle, is thrilled to announce the second annual Her Music Awards.

The Her Music Awards is a program designed to celebrate and support female-identified, mid-career Canadian music creators who are on the verge of taking their creative careers to the next level. The Awards are administered by the SOCAN Foundation, with financial contributions made by SOCAN Foundation and Bandzoogle.

“Even before the pandemic, women in music were underpaid, underrepresented, and faced additional barriers and harassment,” said Charlie Wall-Andrews, Executive Director of SOCAN Foundation. “The Her Music Awards create an opportunity to help overcome the obstacles and to celebrate and empower female-identified music creators that are building momentum towards their career trajectory.”

Renowned Canadian artist and jury committee chair, Shakura S’Aida will host the award show on February 25th through the virtual world meeting space Aire Ouverte via the SOCAN Foundation office. Award recipients will be selected to receive two grand prizes of $5k each. New to this year are five honourable mentions of $1k each also to be awarded.

In addition to this, the Songwriters Association of Canada (SAC) and Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec (SPACQ) are offering a 1 year complimentary membership to their organization for the grand prize winners

“One of our goals as a company is to help raise the voices of the many talented women in music,” says Stacey Bedford, Bandzoogle’s CEO. “And as a Canadian music company, we’re especially proud to partner with the SOCAN Foundation on this great initiative to help support Canadian female-identified music creators.”

Legacy Recordings To Release First-Ever Daryl Hall Solo Retrospective ‘BeforeAfter’ On April 1

0

Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release BeforeAfter, the first-ever solo retrospective from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall, as a two-disc set and across all digital platforms, on Friday, April 1. On the same date, Hall will also embark on his first solo tour in a decade, performing on historic stages like NYC’s Carnegie Hall and Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, with special guest and fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Todd Rundgren supporting.

Daryl Hall’s 2022 Live Nation tour will launch on April 1st in Chicago at the Auditorium Theatre and will continue through April 16th with stops at iconic venues such as Ryman Theater in Nashville on April 3rd and Carnegie Hall in New York on April 14th. He will play a hometown show at The Met Philadelphia on April 9th. Todd Rundgren will be a special guest on all dates.

Compiled and sequenced by Hall, BeforeAfter features thirty tracks spanning all five of his solo albums, from the 1980’s Robert Fripp-produced Sacred Songs through 2011’s Laughing Down Crying, which was co-produced with longtime Hall compatriot T-Bone Wolk, who sadly passed before the album was released. Additionally, the collection features six never-released performances from the pathbreaking web and television series Live From Daryl’s House, which Hall launched in 2007 with the then-novel idea of “playing with my friends and putting it up on the internet.” Special guests on the Live From Daryl’s House tracks include Rundgren, Dave Stewart, and Monte Montgomery. Taken as a whole, BeforeAfter draws unexpected and satisfying connections between the esoteric and accessible sides of Daryl Hall’s creativity.

“I picked this collection of songs from my solo albums because I feel they encapsulate certain periods of my career.” says Hall. “It also shows the diversity of working with collaborators like Robert Fripp or Dave Stewart. And, having some tracks from LFDH on it, really makes the compilation complete.”

As Jeremy Holiday writes in the accompanying BeforeAfter liner notes, “How paradoxical that Daryl Hall is most associated in the public imagination with a long-term musical partner. Because few artists are as individualistic, and individually complete … Yet Daryl Hall is also a brilliant collaborator, and, perhaps ironically, that quality is equally if not more apparent within his solo work. More than a chance to work ‘alone,’ Hall’s individual pursuits have granted him license to be more eclectic in his choice of collaborators and to push further outside the expected bounds.”

Those collaborators include not only Fripp and Wolk, but Stewart, who co-produced Hall’s 1986 album Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine and co-wrote a number of its tracks, and even Mariah Carey who contributed vocals to 1993’s Soul Alone.

That spirit of collaboration has also guided Live From Daryl’s House from its inception, with Hall welcoming multiple generations of artists – from Smokey Robinson and Cheap Trick to Aloe Blacc and Grace Potter – over the show’s fifteen year history.

Cyndi Lauper’s Iconic Music Video “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” Surpasses 1 Billion Views On YouTube

0

Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and activist Cyndi Lauper’s music video “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” has officially crossed 1 billion views on YouTube. The achievement marks the icon’s first music video to join YouTube’s Billion Views club.

Cyndi Lauper’s recording of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” was released in 1983 on her historic debut album She’s So Unusual, becoming a breakthrough hit and a feminist anthem. The accompanying music video has been recognized as one of the greatest music videos of its era. The video made its YouTube debut in October of 2009.

About the hit song and video, Lauper said,

“A lot of people don’t realize this but ‘Girls’ is really a political song. When I got my feminist hands on it, I knew I wanted to make it into an anthem for all women. Sonically, I wanted the song to be uplifting and joyful. When it came time to make the video it was really important to me to make sure we included women from every walk of life. I wanted every little girl watching the video to have the joyful experience of seeing herself on that screen. I wanted us to be a community. Years later, at the Women’s March I saw that community in action. I saw all types of women and girls carrying signs saying ‘Girls Just Want to Have Fun-damental Rights.’ And now here we are at a Billion views. Back when we made the video there was no YouTube, so when you think about it it’s really extraordinary. The reach that this song has. The longevity. That people still purposely seek this video out and press play. Wow. I’m really grateful. Thank you.”

Cyndi Lauper has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and is a GRAMMY, Emmy and Tony-winning artist. She became the first woman in history to have four top-five singles from a debut album, has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2016. Additional honors include Billboard’s Women In Music Icon Award, the 2019 High Note Global Prize issued by United Nations Human Rights, the American Music Awards, Billboard Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and beyond. Lauper is also dedicated to advocacy, co-founding True Colors United in 2008 to fight and end homelessness amongst LGBTQ youth.

Cassandra Jenkins Dives into Vast Smithsonian Folkways Catalog for “People’s Picks” Series

0

American singer-songwriter Cassandra Jenkins is the latest artist to dive into the legendarily deep and historic Smithsonian Folkways Records catalog for the label’s “People’s Picks” series, where notable musicians assemble their own personal playlist, hand-picked from Folkways’ musically dizzying 60,000+ song collection.

Jenkins’ latest album, An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, was described by Stereogum as “one of 2021’s most extraordinary albums” and was featured on year-end lists from Pitchfork, The Guardian, and many more. Going into the new year, she is headed on a cross-country tour before going abroad to Europe this summer. More info here, with tour dates below: https://cassandrajenkins.com/#shows

Inspired by the different ways humans understand and interact with nature, Jenkins’ playlist seeks to connect and inspire others through sound.

The Smithsonian Folkways catalog includes a broad range of historical and modern works that showcase global culture and challenge mainstream history. Over the past 70 years, Smithsonian Folkways has cultivated a “world of sound” that brings unique perspectives to the kaleidoscopic vision of music. For the “People’s Picks” series, artists are brought in to browse the expansive catalog and construct a narrative that speaks to them.

In the following passage, Jenkins delves into her thought process behind assembling her playlist, including the inspiration she drew from nature, particularly the Lyre Bird:

Grasping the Lyrebird’s Tail

Voices mimicking instruments mimicking animals mimicking instruments mimicking voices. Transmutation, Cloud relaxation, heart beat, beat poet, bird songs, cow boys.

I immersed myself in the World of Sound Catalog and gravitated towards the scientific, sacred, psychological, and spoken word corners of the collection. What emerged from my wanderings is a string of recordings that speak to our need to interpret, interact with, and immerse ourselves in nature, and occasionally aim to empower the listener with their innate inclination towards healing. Once I began listening, I found myself following one recording to the next, curious about each character I met along the way. The experience felt like a walk through a museum of natural history, because the individuals capturing the world around them became just as fascinating as the subjects they aim to put on display. The whole experience led me to the question, why do we sing?

My chosen mascot for this collection revealed themselves when I came across an album of recordings of the Lyre Bird, a large peacock-like ground-dweller from Australia, known for it’s uncanny ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment. We have come to understand the calls to be part of an elaborate mating ritual (during which they sing for up to four hours a day), and the scientist suggests that there remains much mystery around the bird’s behaviors, likening their reception of another’s call to telepathy. So while we struggle to understand the world around us, perhaps nature too is seeking the songs, sounds, and language that allow us to connect with one another as well as the worlds that extend just beyond our grasp.
