Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s Isolated Vocals From “It Takes Two”
I wanna rock right now, and you do, too. “There are many critics and listeners who claim that Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock’s ‘It Takes Two’ is the greatest hip-hop single ever cut,” noted Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine of All Music Guide. “It’s hard to disagree with them.”
Singer/Songwriter Mike Vitale Comes “Home” with New Single & Album
Singer/Songwriter Mike Vitale is here to usher you “Home” with the release of his new single, and album — ϕ — both available now.
When it comes to the album, you don’t have to try and say ϕ, you just need to listen to it. In case you’re wondering, though, it means “Phi” — and it’s a beautiful lullaby that leaves you lingering on each hook.
It’s an LP the roots indie musician from LA has been in the process of creating for nearly a decade; a labour of love that began four years ago in Long Beach, Vitale fuses heart and love and musings on a 12-track full-length that finds him yodeling, to enchanting us with wanderlust — inviting us to spin starry circles in lovers lengths.
“The album is called PHI as this is the Greek letter representing the Golden Ratio,” Vitale explains. “It is an irrational number that goes on forever, just like Pi.
“But Pi deals with the circumference of circles,” he continues, “whereas Phi deals with spirals, and can be found in much of life we see around us. The way leaves organize the spread of their leaves for maximum sunlight to accomplish photosynthesis, for example, or the layout of a pinecone or a pineapple, which are also spirals, if you look closely. The Fibonacci sequence is directly related to Phi, as well as platonic solids.
“It is a mystery, written in math, and I adore concepts such as this.”
ϕ follows Mike Vitale’s first full-length acoustic, Idiosyncrasies, which dropped in 2007, and his six-track self-titled album — the latter featuring a full band in 2012 and Vitale taking the show on the road along the West Coast, playing wineries, venues, bars, and colleges. Vitale says the album began from a love story and grew into a collection of chapters of life teachings. While he pursued an Americana vibe on the album, truth be told, he fell in love with simply songwriting and putting out an album that didn’t specify a certain genre.
Self-produced, Vitale’s fingers touched every inch of the songs that wrapped ϕ into the collective it became. “I’ve been teaching myself how to produce music for the past 10 or 12 years,” he explains. “I studied music theory and composition in college, so I am an astute student of music and instrumentation.
“I also have many talented friends who played on this album,” he continues. “And, as a friend of mine said, ‘your songs are only as good as the people playing on them,’ which I believe to be true; I feel that a good producer tries to utilize their strengths in order to highlight the song. The song is king.”
One such example is “Home.” An alternative roots ditty with a subsequent music video that hears Vitale promising, offering, and providing, the song finds our protagonist prepared to be there for ‘her.’
“Somewhat embarrassingly, or probably more accurately, just in time, I wrote the chorus of this song well over ten years ago,” Vitale explains. “However, that is where the song stopped.
“For the life of me, I had nothing more to provide to the contents of its possession,” he continues. “It had no walls, or interior in which to stretch one’s legs, or to relax comfortably on the couch and admire its inner being. It had no kitchen to create soul food. It had no bedroom to make love, and to rest a weary head — let alone two — and so it sat in my creative nexus, forgotten and alone, looking for a mate… No verses. No Pre-chorus. No body. No arms or hands to softly caress the listener. No legs to dance on.”
Even after changing his surroundings, moving from Fullerton, to Anaheim, to Long Beach, he reveals. “Nothing,” he says. “Finally, I moved to Los Angeles, and met a girl who became its muse. She provided inspiration that manifested several verses, and the verses reverberated — not off walls, or roof, or floor, but off of a person.
“People; they are home — more so than any bed in a room, in a floor plan, in a wooden house, on a block, in a neighborhood, in a town or city — could ever be.”
The subsequent music video for “Home” was directed and edited by Vitale, as well; he taught himself how to video edit by watching instructional Youtube videos during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It became an exercise in seeing if I could tell a story with a small amount of footage,” he says. “I had approximately 1.5 minutes worth. Could I make a four-minute music video out of such little footage? I tried my best.”
Beyond the welcome mat of “Home,” each song on ϕ has its own specific story — bookended by these two in particular: “Kathy’s Song,” a love letter to a friend’s mother who lost her battle to ALS, and “Younger Days,” what Vitale refers to as ‘a love letter’ to his life.
“It’s to my friends I have made throughout the years that lead parallel lives to my own,” he shares. “We grow together — yet, sometimes we also grow apart — and our perpendicular intersections of life experience are special. However, nothing is more sacred than the present moment. Now is when we choose to be the best version of ourselves.”
From there, “Time Machine” triumphantly proclaims that we are travelers through time and space, fragile in our bodies, and strong in our ability to move freely within our own memories and to create and abstract our own future, while trakcs “Empty Circle,” “No Vacancy,” and “Gone” all ruminate on the loss of love and confidence at the hands of an aborted relationship.
Also featured is “Running Away From Home,” an anecdote of a second grade Vitale, running away from home to become a Werewolf like his hero, Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf. The song was originally released in 2015, exclusively on Bandcamp, with proceeds donated to Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Research Foundation as a one-year-long campaign to raise money for Parkinson’s Research.
Despite the setback in sheer length of time the album took from start to completion, what Vitale provides is an entire book-ended storyboard of life experiences, mashed over beautiful melodies and cozy harmonies. From adorable yodels, to asking life’s most perilous questions and seeking answers, Mike Vitale invites us to push play on an album that lands like a gentle hug to each of us, simply chronicling the simplicity of life.
And it really can be as simple as ϕ.
“Home” and ϕ are available now.
2021 Canada’s Walk Of Fame Inductee BRUCE COCKBURN Releases Career-Spanning GREATEST HITS (1970-2020) On December 3
With 34 previous releases, 13 JUNO wins, two Hall of Fame inductions, countless honorary Doctorates, Officer of The Order of Canada — and new inductee into Canada’s Walk of Fame this year — all spanning a 50+ year career — it’s no small task to encapsulate Bruce Cockburn’s inimitable imprint when it comes to Canadian music and culture. But his newly announced double-album release, Bruce Cockburn Greatest Hits (1970 – 2020), is a good place to start.
Curated by Bruce Cockburn and set for release December 3rd, 2021 via True North Records, this definitive collection meticulously corrals the acclaimed singer/songwriter’s most favoured tracks — from songs that shot to the top of the charts upon release, to long-lauded fan-favourites requested on tour, time and time again.
Expect to settle in for a chronological journey from the legendary artist’s earliest offerings, to today; curated by Cockburn himself, the hand-picked selection of 30 songs revisit works from 1970 to 2020, and are accompanied by exclusive notes from the artist.
“In 1969, when I was feeling the need to record an album of the songs I’d been writing, I had no concept of what that might lead to,” Cockburn shares. “Not unusual for a young person, I guess…
“In some organic way, it felt like it was ‘time.’ The future wasn’t really an issue. It still isn’t. For each of us, there’s a future or there isn’t.
“But looking back over the arc of fifty years of recording, performing, and travel — not to mention, relationships and personal challenges — I can only shake my head and mutter a word of thanks for all of it. Even if I’d been a planner by nature, I doubt I could have predicted how things have gone.
“And they’re still going!”
The release lands ahead of Cockburn’s “2nd Attempt” North American tour for his 50th Anniversary Concert, previously stymied by Covid restrictions.
Bruce Cockburn’s Greatest Hits (1970 – 2020) is available December 3rd, 2021 via True North Records.

Jazz Songstress FIONA ROSS Sings Across Life’s Emotional Spectrum with ‘Red Flags and High Heels’ Album
The black and white keys on a piano. Heads and tails on a coin. Yin and yang. Just like these opposing halves that create a whole, life would not be complete without both its highs and lows. Multi-award winning contemporary jazz artist Fiona Ross reflects the full emotional spectrum of this thing called life with her highly anticipated new album, Red Flags and High Heels, and its satisfyingly scathing lead single, “You Are Like Poison” — both available now.
With her fifth studio album landing after Ross being named among the 100 Alternative Power Music List for 2020 by shesaid.so, the internationally acclaimed, London-based vocalist, pianist, composer, producer and journalist has garnered experience and expertise to cast a wide net to capture the dark, light and much of what lies between in this personal and very relatable new collection.
“The ‘Red Flags’ represent those things that just don’t sit right with you,” Ross explains. “Although you are not always sure why and you don’t always know what to do about it.” For example, she adds, “The constant analysis. People’s ignorance. Those things you shouldn’t do but do anyway and you have no idea why you did them until after it has all gone wrong.”
Of course, those excruciating lows in life co-exist with and can give way to exhilarating highs, the opposite touchstone, or ‘high heels’, on Ross’s new album. “The ‘High Heels’ represent fun, sex and strength,” she notes. “For many, high heels bring to mind something sexy and playful, while for others they represent power, strength and freedom.”
“You Are Like Poison”, the first single released concurrently with the new album, highlights that duality of life’s highs and lows with Ross’s rapid fire, vocal kiss-off to a painful memory of a bad love playing off of lightning volleys of brass. The seemingly indelible memories of a relationship that went so wrong are ferociously wiped off the table with the empowerment Ross conveys, especially in the soulful, imploring chorus, “Get out of my mind! You are like poison.”
In conjunction with Red Flags and High Heels’ two-sides-of-life theme, rich, powerful brass arrangements and Ross’s expressive piano travel hand in hand throughout the album. “I went to town with brass for this album and fell in love with Dave Boa’s muted trumpet,” recalls Ross. The album also features stellar contributions from saxophonist Loren Hignell, bassist Derek Daley, percussionists Marley Drummond, Warren Woodcraft, Simon Todd, guitarist Gibbi Bettini, backing vocalist, and saxophonist Ashaine White, as well as mastering engineer Nick Watson, with mixing engineered by Warren Woodcraft and Elliot Richardson.
Ross’s other professional pursuit as a journalist and editor also found its way into her new music. “I had also been spending a lot of time researching the history of jazz for my journalism work, and found myself writing a couple of tracks that are inspired by the legacy of jazz, such as ‘More Time’ which is Be Bop inspired,” she says.
Other key tracks include a personal reflection on the good and bad sides of never feeling “Good Enough”, a tribute to Ross’s female role models who’ve grown in grace as they grew older with “When I Get Old” and “The Apple Trees Won’t Grow Anymore”, a deeply moving song inspired by a dream about Ross’s mum, who was a published poet.
“I had this weird dream where there were very grey fields and my Mum kept saying the apple trees won’t grow anymore and there was a weird cheerful melody playing throughout my dream,” Ross remembers. “I didn’t understand it at the time at all. She passed away not long afterwards, during Covid lockdown. In my last album, I wrote a song for my Dad, but for this album, I wrote one not for my Mum but about her and it felt right to reference the apple trees.”
Jazz-packed with major bang for your buck, the 10 studio tracks on Red Flags and High Heels are expanded on with 4 bonus, live recordings that showcase Ross’s character-filled voice and expressive piano alongside her band’s whipcrack tight accompaniment.
“I recorded a few live sessions during the lockdown period but only released them as videos, so I wanted to include them on my new album,” Ross explains, adding, “It’s nice to share some new arrangements of some of my early songs, which I always perform live and always go down well with the crowd!”
Those videos Ross refers to come from The Live Sessions video album she released in September 2020, which highlighted some of her favourite tracks from her four previous studio albums Fierce and Non-Compliant, Black, White and a Little Bit of Grey, Just Me (and sometimes someone else), and A Twist of Blue.
Ross is also a champion for women in the music industry, founding the ground breaking organisation, Women in Jazz Media, which develops and supports initiatives for mentoring and promoting women in jazz music around the world. To that end, Ross has asked women who have inspired her to write her album sleeve notes.
“My last album featured sleeve notes with the legend that is Maxine Gordon – she is a role model and a mentor to me,” notes Ross. “When I was thinking about this album, I thought it would be really incredible to have strong, fierce, and inspirational women who have inspired me, write the sleeve notes for each of my albums from now onwards, with Maxine leading the way. Celine Peterson instantly came to mind and I am absolutely thrilled that she agreed.”
“Being able to connect with a singer and songwriter who can find the strength to share such deeply personal words with us in such a way that makes us feel safe, is rare,” Peterson pens in the accompanying notes. “Red Flags and High Heels is a time capsule in musical creation.”
Red Flags and High Heels is landing in the wake of a plethora of honours for Ross’s previous album Fierce and Non-Compliant. These include Best Jazz Song from the World Songwriting Awards for her song ‘For My Dad’, Outstanding achievement awarded by the Global Music Awards and most recently International female songwriter of the year from the International Singer Songwriters Association.
Additionally, Ross has been featured in a number of publications including Tinnitist, Jazziz, Record World Magazine, Jazz Corner, Ink 19 and Jazz Quarterly and was thrilled to be in the top ten of most played videos recently in Tinnitist. Ross’s song ‘Mistress’ which was recorded live in a stairwell, was selected to be included in the British Library archives for prosperity.
Now, with Red Flags and High Heels, Fiona Ross has opened the door to a deeper dimension of herself and her artistry. As Jazz in Europe says, “To honestly know Fiona Ross is simply, listen to her latest new album ‘Red Flags & High Heels’.”
Red Flags and High Heels, and the lead single “You Are Like Poison,” are both available now.
The Manic Boys and Girls Club are In Session: Toronto Rockers Release “Blacked Out”
Wait, is that a screeching halt to the sonic vibe of 2021? Or have we just “Blacked Out”? Maybe it’s a bit of both, or at least seems that way when you blare the speakers on the debut drop from Canadian Rockers The Manic Boys and Girls Club — available now.
“’Blacked Out’ is a cry for help disguised as an upbeat dance floor banger,” The Manic Boys and Girls Club admits. “We’re lost, overmedicated, depressed and hiding behind bathroom selfies, late nights, and lip gloss.
“Raised strict Catholics, children of immigrant parents, and sent away to live in rural Portugal with their grandmother — who had previously been a nun — The Manic Boys and Girls Club is more than a band,” co-fronts Bela and Fernando Ferrieira explain. “It is an escape from the submissive existence that was reality, an escape from the disposable music packaged for the masses, and an escape for any misfit looking to join the club.”
“Blacked Out” rages out of the gates, unrelenting in its pulsating bass and ineffable synth. The song doesn’t dare you to move; it demands it. It’s the track you find yourself spinning inside under a kaleidoscope of disco ball diamonds. The song you crank to eleven, while you’re dancing with your headphones. It’s the jam that gives you permission to disappear from reality for a moment. To slide into a soundscape far removed from the daily drab of everyday life. The beauty is in its escapism.
A myriad of synth, hammering percussion, catchy riffs and melodic hooks, “Blacked Out” is equally a dance bop as it is an homage to all that worked for the OG indie artists of the early 2ks. Should Dragonette have asked Mother Mother on a date, perhaps they’d spend the back seat of the car producing “Blacked Out,” the super-charged single putting this sibling duo on the map.
As for The Manic Boys and Girls Club’s co-fronts, the pair share equal responsibility to the group: Bela’s haunting vox, balanced with Fernando’s savoury harmony, their dual talent snagged the attention of producer Gavin Brown (Glorious Sons, Billy Talent, Mother Mother), who would go on to produce their EP. “We are pretty stubborn and very opinionated when we work, so the fact that an award-winning producer like Gavin Brown put up with us, and actually saw eye to eye with us on various ideas, feels like a miracle,” the band explains.
The result is a collection of five songs recounting the two loners’ experience touring in a van, as well as relationships, and bad habits. “Every song starts with a lyric and a melody,” they say. “No matter how it is produced, every one of our songs can be a lullaby.
“When we play as a duo, our music is heard as it was initially written.”
For Bela and Fernando, the essence of songwriting comes from growth in the studio. Eternally tweaking, ever adjusting, the songs they bring to the recording session can continue to shapeshift and morph entirely. “The two of us have always agreed that a song is never finished,” they say. “You just choose to stop and record it at a certain point.
“So as we play music, perform, whatever… We continue the development of these songs. Everything keeps growing. A song we recorded months ago may continue to evolve in our rehearsal room, and be performed now sounding pretty different.”
“The obvious limitations of an indie band create a demand for higher creativity in everything we produce,” they continue. “There is nothing to hide behind. Our ideas have to translate in their simplest, low-budget form. Everyone involved is there because they believe in what we are creating. There is a sense of ‘nothing to lose’ when you are an indie band. So, we kind of go for whatever we feel even if an idea seems crazy when we say it out loud.”
It’s the fearlessness of their ideas, and their shared love of risk-taking that lands The Manic Boys and Girls Club in a lane all their own. Traveling down a rock highway and picking up pop and dance hitchhikers along the way encapsulates a sound they’re equally rediscovering, and reimagining.
For those who fell hard for the earliest rock/synth crossovers of the early 2000s, join the club. The Manic Girls and Boys Club. There’s always room for one more misfit.
“Blacked Out” is available now.
