Metallica Scholars Initiative Expands Into Eight New Schools

0

In a year fraught with uncertainty, the Metallica Scholars Initiative outpaced expectations, prompting a unanimous decision by the Board of Directors to expand the nationwide program from 15 community colleges to 23 in 2021. The Foundation plans to donate $1.6 Million in funding with the goal of reinvesting in communities that have supported the band over the last four decades.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative was created in 2019 through a partnership between the band’s All Within My Hands Foundation (AWMH) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), a Washington, D.C. based organization representing the country’s nearly 1,200 community colleges. Starting with 10 colleges located in communities that supported Metallica on tour, schools were selected via a competitive application process, each receiving $100,000 toward programs designed to support students training to enter the American workforce.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative has found success by connecting students to skill-building opportunities in their local communities, bridging the talent needs of the American workforce through the community college system. Kicking off the third year of the program, AWMH will be joined once again by Rockford, Michigan-based Wolverine Boots and Apparel, along with other notable partners to be announced, supplementing All Within My Hands’ cumulative $1.6 million contribution. Wolverine VP of Marketing Andrew Shripka commented, “Wolverine is dedicated to supporting the people who have the grit and work ethic it takes to pursue a career in the trades, and we are excited to join forces again with All Within My Hands to support the next class of Metallica Scholars.”

Final reports from all 15 schools in 2020 proved that, even with the obvious complications presented by a pandemic, each school selected for the Metallica Scholars grant successfully modified programming to provide students with industry-relevant applied learning programs based on local demands. Funding served over 1,000 students at community colleges across the US in career and technical training programs last year, and outcomes exceeded expectations.

From Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte: “97.6% of the Metallica Scholars scheduled to graduate in the spring or summer 2020 semesters were successful. Students across ten different academic health programs were supported by Metallica Scholars funds. Certification exam pass rates and employment rates of those who were eligible exceeded 90%.”

While high rates of achievement are certainly proof that the Metallica Scholars Initiative is accomplishing its goals, the Foundation finds inspiration from personal anecdotes shared by the students themselves. Emma-Lynn Ponds, a welding scholar from Valencia College, articulates how her training goes beyond establishing a career path when she says, “The whole reason I’m doing this is because I wanna be the first in my family to break the cycle of poverty.”

Jennifer Worth, Senior Vice President of Workforce and Economic Development at the American Association of Community Colleges, works closely with AWMH to connect students with employment opportunities. She speaks to the relationships between Metallica/AWMH and AACC as well as that between the scholars and the growing workforce in communities across the country saying, “AACC is honored to manage the All Within My Hands’ Metallica Scholars Initiative. As we engage more communities, we have the opportunity to connect with more industry partners, each of which affirms that high-quality, skilled trade jobs are available, and community colleges are the premier places to train and amass talent. We will not stop doing this work until that recognition is as awesomely global as the band’s trust in us, our colleges, and the students with whom we work.”

This announcement comes on the heels of a special Metallica Mondays concert, streamed on YouTube as a part of the Foundation’s Month of Giving supporting Direct Relief and Feeding America. The fundraising efforts throughout May have included specially designed merchandise, a fan fundraising contest, and an autographed guitar auction. Conceived within the restrictions of COVID-19 and designed to adhere to the Foundation’s mission dedicated to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and critical local services, this was All Within My Hands’ second Month of Giving.

My Next Read: “Stories to Tell – A Memoir” By Richard Marx

0

Legendary musician Richard Marx offers an enlightening, entertaining look at his life and career.

Richard Marx is one of the most accomplished singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. His self-titled 1987 album went triple platinum and made him the first male solo artist (and second solo artist overall after Whitney Houston) to have four singles from their debut crack the top three on the Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was an even bigger smash, going quadruple platinum and landing two singles at number one. He has written fourteen number one songs in total, shared a Song of the Year Grammy with Luther Vandross, and collaborated with a variety of artists including NSYNC, Josh Groban, Natalie Cole, and Keith Urban. Lately, he’s also become a Twitter celebrity thanks to his outspokenness on social issues and his ability to out-troll his trolls.

In Stories to Tell, Marx uses this same engaging, straight-talking style to look back on his life and career. He writes of how Kenny Rogers changed a single line of a song he’d written for him then asked for a 50% cut—which inspired Marx to write one of his biggest hits. He tells the uncanny story of how he wound up curled up on the couch of Olivia Newton-John, his childhood crush, watching Xanadu. He shares the tribulations of working with the all-female hair metal band Vixen and appearing in their video. Yet amid these entertaining celebrity encounters, Marx offers a more sobering assessment of the music business as he’s experienced it over four decades—the challenges of navigating greedy executives and grueling tour schedules, and the rewards of connecting with thousands of fans at sold-out shows that make all the drama worthwhile. He also provides an illuminating look at his songwriting process and talks honestly about how his personal life has inspired his work, including finding love with wife Daisy Fuentes and the mystery illness that recently struck him—and that doctors haven’t been able to solve.

Stories to Tell is a remarkably candid, wildly entertaining memoir about the art and business of music.

RAVENSCODE Set Speakers Ablaze with New Single “Fire”

0

When the smoke clears, you’ll be left reveling in the ash, having been burned up by the latest smash single from Canadian four-piece, Ravenscode; “Fire” is available now.

The latest from their recent album, Fire and Storm, the Windsor-based band releases an inferno off the opening note: heavy electrics, pulsating percussion, pounding bass and an explosion of melodic vox. The listener is drawn into a fury of emotion, and explosion.

Following up their debut album, District of Broken Hope, “Fire” serves as the lead single from the group’s sophomore effort — a project they call a “vivid picture of who Ravenscode is as a band”.

The track, as they say, starts as many of them do – from a riff. “That main riff you hear at the start of a song that hits you like a punch to the face was written by Justin (aka Journey) one night before bed,” the band explains. “He knew right away that it was something special and recognized the full throttle emotion that seemed to come with it.

“This feeling brought out one word ‘Fire’.”

The song actually serves as a promise during a breakup, where our hero assures he’s going to be just fine in light of the recent heartbreak because he is, in fact, fire. “And I’m here to burn this place down,” sears the lyrics. “You better back away and hide your eyes,” it continues to threaten, “as I burn brighter. Let the flames embrace me now ‘cause I am fire tonight.”

It’s the essence of energy that Ravenscode produces on the track that melts you into submission of its force. The chant “we want the fire, we need the fire, we breathe the fire” establishes an almost guttural Vincent Price-like pledge to darkness, illuminated only by flames.

The song is a flash forward into the future of Ravenscode as songwriters and musicians; a testament to their grueling touring, and dedication to honing their craft on stages across Canada.

“The reaction of crowds while on tour was a true affirmation that this is what (we) were born to do,” they say, adding the multitude of fan videos, and cover tracks has been the most endearing to them of all their interactions with their audience. “Watching someone take the time to learn your song and have the confidence to perform it and put it out into the world is one for the best feelings there is.”

Now with the heat of experience burning through them, Ravenscode is more confident than ever in their ability to unite crowds with their signature melodic hard rock sound, chemistry on and off stage, and commitment to providing a trip to their show will become the “best night of your life.”

“Fire” is a steady warning that these guys promise no prisoners, no holds barred, and simply no way you’re leaving one of their concerts without them being burned into your consciousness.

“Fire” and Fire and Storm are available now.

Country Artist J.C. BRAE Serves Up Some Weekend Vibes with “Savin’ It Up For Saturday Night”

0

Sudbury, ON’s country artist J.C. Brae will have you wishin’ it was the weekend already with this, their honky-tonk lovin’ new single, “Savin’ It Up For Saturday Night” — available now.

A self-described “country boy,” this Canuck took his guitar and his dream to Tennessee where he laid the tracks for his first eponymous album. An experience he recalls he’ll “never forget,” Brae leaves it all on the dance floor with this jukebox swingin’ anthem that’s everything you want in a fresh country cut, and more.

An instant country classic, “Savin’ It Up For Saturday Night” is an ode to a familiar sentiment — getting out from under a week of work and using up all you’ve got left to give yourself a right good time out that you’ve earned.

True grit, hillbilly guitars, and an unmistakable country twang, this song dares you to line dance with your sweetheart until you’ve worn the souls down on your Justins before you stumble back to sleep it off till next weekend.

“From sundown to the morning light,” Brae promises on the track, “We’re gonna find us a hardwood floor and dance like we’ve never danced before!”

From the get-go, J.C. Brae has become synonymous with country crowds, mic in hand; compared to industry greats like John Conlee and Conway Twitty, the Sudbury-based musician is no stranger to lighting up the stages and throwing a party en masse. Now with his first EP in hand, Brae has also dropped the mic on an adjacent podcast he utilizes to stay close to audiences of his work. With both projects signifying his dedication to his artistry, and his down-home likeability, Brae is focussed on getting the music out to fans.

“Savin’ It Up For Saturday Night” is available now.

Son Of Dave Spies the “End Of Days” with New Single

0

Renowned international bluesman Son Of Dave has written 11 golden songs on a hundred dollar piano for this, his upcoming album Call Me A Cab — available May 14th via Kartel Music Group.

His ninth album release, what first appears as fun loving, old-school, ‘New Orleans rhythm and blues’ turns out to be expertly crafted songs about doctors, death, refugees, gentrification, night-life depravity, hopelessness, and mean, mean women, of course.

Put Call Me A Cab proudly alongside Randy Newman, Tom Waits, and Dr John… Though fans who have been following the London, UK-based Winnipeg, MB-born for decades know there’s also unique blues harmonica, croon, and growl.

And the rhythm… It’s all about the rhythm.

First started before 2019, the worldwide shut-in gave Son Of Dave (Benjamin Darvill) time off from touring to perfect the album. Joined at home and in studio (Hoxa HQ, London) by expert musicians Jimmy Hogarth, ‘Budi’ Butenop, Martin Slattery, and ‘KC’ Zenker, this is an organic record… How they made ’em 1974.

With upwards of 50,000+ record sales to his credit, Son Of Dave has been making recordings since the early 90s, having crossed five continents with his famous one-man-band show. He’s appeared mainstage at festivals like The Big Chill, Bestival, Glastonbury, and more, and also supported huge names like Iggy & The Stooges, UB40, and Supergrass, to name a few.

With frequent radio play across England, France and Italy, his songs have also found their way into many soundtracks including Breaking Bad, True Blood, Preacher (AMC), and Licence To Wed (Robin Williams).

And before all this, he was a member of the rather famous Crash Test Dummies for 10 years.

Son of Dave started out in the blues and biker bars in Manitoba, Canada where he hopes one day to return. He has a program on Soho Radio in London where he’s been based for 25 years.
