My Next Read: “Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer” By Richard Perry

0

Anyone who feels a connection to the best music of the last fifty years—and who doesn’t?—will revel in this uniquely American success story. Even at a young age, Richard Perry knew that his destiny was to bring music into people’s lives.

What he couldn’t have dreamed was that his meteoric rise through the ranks of the music business would result in successful, ground-breaking, and award-winning collaborations. The Winner of a Special Merit Award from the Grammys has produced hits for legendary performers all of whom trusted him to shape the sound that made them great.

Richard’s credits include:
Barbra Streisand: Stoney End
Carly Simon: You’re So Vain, The Right Thing to Do, Mockingbird, Haven’t Got Time for the Pain, Nobody Does it Better
Ringo Starr: No No Song, Oh My My, You’re Sixteen, Photograph
Leo Sayer: When I Need Love, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing
Rod Stewart: Great American Songbook albums
Art Gartfunkel: Breakaway album (1975), Some Enchanted Evening (2006)
Pointer Sisters: Jump (for My Love), Slow Hand, Neutron Dance
Harry Nilsson: Without You, Coconut, Jump into the Fire, Spaceman, Remember (Christmas)

In this candid and page-turning memoir, Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer, Perry transports us through his eventful life, from his childhood in Brooklyn, where he played in bands, starred in musicals, and witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll; through his sometimes rocky but always thrilling climb up the music-business ladder; and finally, into the studios and personal lives of the many superstars who provide our most enduring soundtrack.

Throughout his story, Perry remains entertaining and fun-loving company, always awed by his own proximity to greatness and boundlessly enthusiastic about his contributions to the most beloved art form.

OMD To Release Universal & Liberator (1993) On Remastered Vinyl For First Time Since Release Out August 6

Following on from their 40th anniversary celebrations last year which saw them release their greatest hits and anniversary box set, ’Souvenir’, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) have announced further remastered reissues of their UK Top 20 album Liberator and their 1996 album Universal on vinyl on August 6th on UMC/Liberator.

Frontman Andy McCluskey’s fascination with WWII bombers influenced the title of the UK Top 20 album Liberator named after the B-24 Liberator aircraft. Peaking at number 14 in the UK album charts, the record features singles ‘Stand Above Me’ and ‘Dream Of Me’ as well as a cover version of the Velvet Underground’s 1967 track, ‘Sunday Morning’. Universal, the band’s tenth album released in 1996, also had chart success with single ‘Walking On The Milky Way’ entering in the Top 20 in the UK singles charts and saw the band make their 29th and final appearance on Top of the Pops.

Both albums, which haven’t been available on vinyl since their first release, will be reissued on 180g black vinyl and were remastered at the iconic Abbey Road studios. The releases follow a string of reissues in the last year from OMD including the limited 12” vinyl of their legendary anti-war hit single ‘Enola Gay’ as well as a limited reissue of the bands iconic debut single, ‘Electricity’, on 7” vinyl.

OMD will also embark on a UK arena tour in November of this year. The tour, which will see the band perform songs from their iconic album ‘Architecture & Morality’, plus many more hits from their legendary back catalogue, will stop off at London’s Eventim Apollo, and two hometown shows at the Liverpool Empire and Olympia.

As well as the tour, fans and the band can give back to the tour crew at the ‘You Me & OMD’ livestream at London’s Indigo at The O2 on June 19th. The show is set to raise money and awareness for their crew, whose livelihoods have been so affected in the wake of the global Covid-19 pandemi

On July 16, Tina Turner will release the deluxe of FOREIGN AFFAIR

0

On July 16, Tina Turner will release the deluxe of FOREIGN AFFAIR, alongside vinyl, CD, and digital versions. As one of the biggest albums of the ‘80s, Foreign Affair showcased Tina Turner at her very best, further cementing her position as The Queen of Rock ‘n Roll.

Celebrated in this limited edition deluxe boxed set, FOREIGN AFFAIR (DELUXE EDITION) includes the original album fully remastered for the first time on CD1, with CD2 featuring a collection of B-sides, remixes, and a previously unheard demo of the Tina Turner classic, “The Best.” Across CD3 and CD4 is an iconic Tina Turner live show from Barcelona in 1990. In this exhilarating performance, Turner performs a number of her most-loved tracks, including “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Proud Mary,” “Private Dancer,” and many more. This electric performance is also available to watch on the DVD, as well as the six music videos from the album’s singles fully restored to HD.

Along with this amazing music, the deluxe edition contains a special, commemorative passport featuring a number of iconic photos of Turner, as well as a high-quality art card featuring photos from photographer Paul Cox. Also included is a booklet with brand-new liner notes from Holly Knight, the songwriter of “The Best,” “Be Tender With Me Baby,” “You Can’t Stop Me Loving You,” and “Ask Me How I Feel.”

The album will also be released on 2-LP white vinyl, exclusive to Dig!, and features the original album fully remastered and on 2-LP for the very first time. The album will also be available on black 2-LP from all other retailers, as well as digitally, and on 2-CD, featuring the original album fully remastered, as well as a collection of B-sides, remixes, and an unreleased demo of “The Best”; which is available to listen to here.

Foreign Affair was Turner’s third studio album since her dramatic global resurgence, following the monumental success of Private Dancer (1984) and Break Every Rule (1986), as well as her lead role in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. It went on to be a multi-platinum record across the world, including UK, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, and many more. The biggest track to come from the album was the 80s anthem, “The Best.” The track continues to transcend generations, with one of the most recognizable choruses in music history.
