Folk Singer KATE KOENIG Gives Voice to a Very Old Soul in “Young with Ancient Stories”

0

It’s the song’s title but it could also be the artist’s bio in four words: “Young with Ancient Stories” is experimental folk singer/songwriter Kate Koenig’s new release.

Plaintive, introspective, and sung from the point of view of the mythological creature Bʌfdɔg (Buff Dog), who’s existed as every person and at every time, “Young with Ancient Stories” is Bʌfdɔg’s soul-baring confession of spiritual disconnection and isolation.

“Bʌfdɔg is singing both as a creature spiritually exhausted from experiencing a sun’s age of lifetimes and as a lost and lonely kid who feels cut off from the world,” explains Koenig.

“Young with Ancient Stories” is the second single and closing track from Koenig’s sophomore album, Etemenanki, released January 31. Every song on Etemenanki is sung either by Bʌfdɔg themselves or from the perspective of individuals whom Bʌfdɔg has embodied. However, this song holds a particularly personal connection for the unique and inventive singer/songwriter. “Out of all of the songs on the album, the narration of this one comes the closest to coming from my own voice,” remarks Koenig.

Just as “Young with Ancient Stories” features a stirring solo vocal and acoustic guitar performance by the Brooklyn-based artist, the video also was a solo endeavor. “I hauled all of my A/V equipment an hour and a half outside of NYC and spent an afternoon setting up and shooting.”

Koenig chose an ancient filming location very fitting for the song and album’s spiritual themes, the Church of the Magdalene in Sleepy Hollow, New York, founded in 1894. “The church’s rustic vibe, given off by its vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and the russet mahogany wood surrounding the white marble and gold-adorned altar, made it the perfect setting for my songs, some of which reference antiquity,” recalls Koenig.

However, it’s not a visual representation of her own beliefs. “While the video is set in a (liberal) Catholic church and features Catholic imagery, I identify as spiritual agnostic and have no ties to the Catholic Church,” explains Koenig.

Themes of spirituality, infatuation, questioning and longing thread throughout Etemenanki, the follow up to Koenig’s 2019 debut album, Haircuts for Barbers. “Many songs on the album blur the lines between romantic obsession and a longing for a spiritual connection with the inconceivable,” says Koenig.

Koenig’s music has already garnered some great accolades from peers. Jazz guitar master Gene Bertoncini shares, “Kate shows great ambition and persistence in bringing her artistic voice to the people of New York City, both through her shows and the enthusiasm she puts into her performances. I have traveled across boroughs just to see her perform.” Mumford and Sons’ Winston Marshall wrote to Koenig, “You’re talented! Some artists I think you might like: Laura Marling, Joni Mitchell, Jeffrey Lewis, Vashti Bunyan, The Wowz. I hear a lineage from your music to theirs.”

Pre-pandemic, Koenig performed for appreciative audiences at storied NYC venues such as Bowery Ballroom, Pete’s Candy Store, Pianos, Niagara, and Under St. Mark’s Theatre. Koenig will be back on many stages again as more live music returns post-pandemic.

It’s a Full Sonic “Assault” for Shoegaze x Punk x Synthy Dream-Rockers MORNING TRIPS & New Single

0

Like a pulsating punk-rock riot in audible form, Florida-based genre-bending alt-pop rockers Morning Trips have unleashed this, their newest single, “Assault.”

Brash, unapologetic, and as catchy as a Velcro shoe in a vat of glue, this very smart, very loud track centers around being a young person in America in 2021. In “Assault,” Morning Trips waste zero time expressing their feelings on subjects heavy on their heart since their formation in 2017.

Deftly demonstrating the band’s dynamic range, “Assault” follows the Morning Trips’ most recent offering, “My Parade” — a churning, dreamy, whirlwind of a pop song complete with operatic and shoegaze influences. They worked with producer and engineer Jeremey SH Griffith to conceptualize chilling visuals that serve as reminders for how quickly unjust policies discriminate against everyday people.

Together for four years now, the American-based four-piece’s expansive sound has been described as by the Northwest Florida Daily News as “influenced by a gumbo of dream pop, shoegaze, R&B, and ‘80s music,” with founding punk-era nostalgia and saccharine synth mixed in for good measure.

The blend of comforting yet pulsating feelings ripple and resonate further with each riff; Morning Trips aim to be for all collections of people as they morph through soundscapes with their diverse approach to creating.

“We want to create a world with the same mentality of how we want to exist in the real world,” songwriter and band founder Brady Lynch shares. “We want to create open, progressive, and diverse music for people from all walks of life to find something of solace in.”

So far, their discography walks the talk; each track indeed serves as its own singular, stand-out ingredient, while landing as decidedly cohesive and complementary alongside counterparts in the stewpot. From dreamy R&B to electronic-influenced punk to bubbly synth-pop, 2020 singles “Follow the Blind,” “Saudade,” and “Di / Hi” followed earlier 2019 offerings of “Baby,” “Disobedience,” and 2018’s breakout debut, “Blue.”

“I was initially inspired by an almost naive approach to writing music on a laptop, if I’m honest,” Lynch recalls, citing early iterations created with an impaired Macbook Pro and Ableton Live. “I started producing demos intended for a ‘traditional’ band sound in hopes to find members to round out a lineup.”

It worked; soon he was joined by Logan Clinkingbeard, James Amos, and Noah Townsend. “Turns out, those early laptop demos eventually paved the way to become the first Morning Trips tunes,” Lynch adds.

Morning Trips have seen a series of state-wide tours to the tune of 50+ shows, and nods from media far and wide, including but not limited to the UK’s Pastel Wasteland, South Africa’s Janglepophub, and America’s American Pancake, AAA Backstage.

Folk Singer/Songwriter BRENDAN SCOTT FRIEL Releases New Album, Summer Moons & Video for “All In”

0

From a spinning cauldron of music, melody, and magic, get spell-bound by Windsor, ON-based troubadour, Brendan Scott Friel with his recent album, Summer Moons, and new video for single “All In” — both available now!

Friel’s dedication to enchanting truths, breathless vocals, and stunning instrumentation makes up the wonderment of this latest project. A collection of experiences, memories, and wishes are detailed on the 10-track sophomore album Friel worked tirelessly to stitch together.

“I wrote this album in the afterglow of some major exciting life events,” Friel reveals. “I had married the woman I love; we had bought and fixed up a small home together; I was working with one of my favourite producers… So many things I had been chasing came together, rather suddenly, and after the initial excitement, there was this odd calm and almost sadness.

“In the process of analyzing this, I learned the feeling had a name: ‘The Hedonic Treadmill,’ which is the tendency of humans to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes.

“My struggle with that realization was a major inspiration for the themes present on Summer Moons.”

The songs across Summer Moons are ever-present in their dedication to telling the whole story, with Friel, the painter behind a collision of brightly coloured canvases, producing loving vignettes of moments.

Each verse mimicking life; aach bridge finessing the plea, or thought, or promise.

On “All In,” Friel challenges you to fall into the arms of love and all its longings. On “Shadows,” he longs for answers. With “Lorelei,” he draws on real experiences to give life to the imagery he sings.

With his indie rock/acoustic folk pop instrumentation, Friel writes the music of first dances, first kisses, heartbreaks, break ups, make ups, and the meanings of life and all its twists and turns; Summer Moons offers itself as the soundtrack to that one fleeting moment in time you beg yourself not to forget.

Collaborating with producer James Bunton (Donovan Woods, Joey Landereth), the album is seamlessly woven together — each song a compliment to the one next to it. Given the current global climate, the pair meticulously crafted the album over a series of weekly Sunday morning Zoom meetings. “Every Thursday, I would send him demos of what I had been working on in my home studio, and that following Sunday we would again chat, and the process would repeat itself,” Friel recalls, offering a behind-the-scenes look at creating an album during uncertainty. “It went on like that from March until September when restrictions finally eased up to the point where I could go to Toronto and start recording the album in-person.

“Although it pushed the release date way back from my original goal,” he reveals, “I’m thankful for that extra time as I ended up writing three brand new songs that are now staples of the album.”

A dedicated musician, singer/songwriter, and performer, Friel is no stranger to the stage, having notched hundreds of shows in his career. As a hometown hero and fan favourite, he has appeared on a variety of mainstream media outlets including CTV and the CBC.

A sophomore release that follows his 2017 debut, Quiet Cars, with this album, Brendan Scott Friel continues to capture his unapologetic ingenuity for telling it like it is.

Kayla DiVenere Spins Teen Fantasy In New “Justin Bieber” Single

0

The year is 1990 and your walls are adorned with cutouts from the latest teen magazine of your favourite heartthrobs… From the back of the bedroom door, to the ceiling above your bed, the closet and your locker, you are inundated with posters of your first real celebrity crush… Take a deep breath of that nostalgia, and press play on Montreal-born now Los Angeles-based Kayla DiVenere and her single, “Justin Bieber” — available now.

Both an homage to a teen fantasy spun out like an audio book of every girl’s diary, and an instant pop classic, DiVenere pulls no punches and risks it all to candidly reveal her affinity for the Biebs himself.

Calling on him to be her “boyfriend,” while she mercilessly offers to be his “baby,” the track is laced with clever references to the pop sensation’s career including “you don’t have to be sorry”— a clear nod to his singles.

“My song ‘Justin Bieber’ conveys a comedic side to infatuation where reality and Hollywood life blend together,” DiVenere explains. “Justin was every young girl’s dream celebrity crush, leading me to write a song that is so relatable.

“He was also always a role model, and inspired me to play multiple instruments and follow my passion,” she continues. “Throughout the creative process, we made sure to keep the song light and comedic as well as mysterious and sexy.”

What DiVenere does so well on the track is make it “beliebable”… A “Belieber” yourself or not, either way, you’re there with her on this journey. She’s giving you the inside scoop to her most private thoughts, wants and desires and unapologetically invites you to join in on the ride.

The song’s subsequent music video is the crazed-fan testament in visual form — plenty of posters and cardboard cutouts create the décor of her home. Included is a dinner party of Cheerios, with our protagonist at one side, cheerfully enjoying her meal across from a cardboard Bieber, propped up in his own chair with his own bowl of cereal. It’s cheeky and fun — and speaks metaphorical volumes of the intensity of childhood crushes.

Well-known for her roles on hit shows such as “Law & Order”, Hulu’s “Love Victor,” and Hulu’s “Light as a Feather” — not to mention feature films such as “Under the Silver Lake” — DiVenere is a teenager enjoying incredible success in her budding music career since bursting onto the scene in 2018 with her debut, “Youth.”

At over 800,000+ streams across Spotify alone, the songstress is making an indelible mark on the industry with her innate eclectic talent, songwriting ability, acting and showmanship; DiVenere was destined for the arts.

Be ready to revisit your teenage dream when you knock back a play or two of DiVenere’s “Justin Bieber.” Like your mother’s affinity for David Cassidy, your adoration of the Backstreet Boys, that time you swore you’d marry Devon Sawa, and the fact that you still have NKOTB dolls locked away in your chest of memories, this track reopens the floodgates of days spent pining for a celeb both a million miles away, but front and centre in your every waking thought.

The grit and grace of “Justin Bieber” is the magic Kayla DiVenere creates out of yesterday’s memories, and the grin you sheepishly bear remembering your first celebrity crush.

Foo Fighters to Launch New Advertising Campaign to Shine a “Spotlight” on Everyday Rock Stars

0

Beginning today, the Ram Truck brand and Foo Fighters join forces to pay homage to everyday heroes with the launch of a new multimedia campaign, “Spotlight,” which includes three new videos spanning television, digital and Ram Truck brand social media channels.

The campaign will kick off just before Mother’s Day and coincides with the release of “From Cradle to Stage,” a new unscripted series directed by Grohl and inspired by his mother Virginia Hanlon Grohl and her critically acclaimed book. This follows closely on the release of “What Drives Us,” a documentary Grohl directed as “a love letter to every musician that has ever jumped in an old van with their friends and left it all behind for the simple reward of playing music.”

Stretching back to the #RamBandVan initiative launched in 2018 and decades earlier to the ’90s and the band’s original Ram van featured in “What Drives Us,” the partnership between the Ram Truck brand and Foo Fighters was born out of a shared passion: A desire to enable hardworking musicians to get out and tour, knowing the struggles, financial and otherwise, that come with the grassroots touring lifestyle. The #RamBandVan program has and will continue to support determined musicians as they get back to doing what they love.

Soundtracked by Foo Fighters’ anthemic “Making A Fire,” the campaign kicks off with an extended 60-second version of “Rock Star” featuring Dave Grohl. As a tribute to the mentors and leaders who are Ram truck owners, the video showcases everyday people helping kids with their struggles, while Grohl is seen driving his Ram 1500 and listing all the ways it takes to overcome obstacles on the path to rock stardom before humbly stating, “bringing out the very best of them, takes the very best of us.”

Two additional 30-second campaign spots, “Overtime” and “Best Part,” will run across television. A 30-second version of “Rock Star” will also run across television.

People and YouTubers from Canada and the US who are interested in music production and editing software can now check out Canadian Singer Machi’s YouTube channel that encourages and teaches people how to make music on their own right from creating music to releasing an album.

Machi, who has been producing music since 2013, recently announced the launch of her YouTube channel that has been chalking up hundreds of views because of her own brand of Machi Music. The channel will also serve to showcase the versatility of the singer cum music producer, which is an added advantage of the entire development. Machi’s music has always been popular for its multi-genre variety including the artiste’s ability to create music packed with emotion, an art that few singers can do well.

Machi’s YouTube channel features educational videos that teach and motivate how people can make good music and produce it as well. Besides her YouTube venture, Machi has also announced she released a Trance album called “Sleeping Well” and intends to release a physical album every year.
