Advance: Canada’s Black Music Business Collective, Appoints Keziah Myers As Executive Director

0

Today, ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective announces the appointment of Keziah Myers as the organization’s first Executive Director.

Myers says, “This is when the work begins. The time is now to make change, and with the support of the entire ecosystem, we will be able to provide opportunities, change policies, and support Black owned businesses within the music industry. I am happy to be part of the leadership team, and look forward to the task at hand, which is based upon the bettering, uplifting, promoting and retaining Black talent within Canada.”

Effective immediately, the newly appointed Executive Director is chiefly responsible for the implementation of the vision and mission developed by the Board of Directors and will oversee the administration, program development and strategic plan of the organization across the goals identified. The role’s mandate is to ensure optimal use of organizational finances, staff and resources.

Keziah Myers brings a breadth of experience from her cross-collective role, working at both SOCAN and Re:Sound. Her main role was to educate media and non-media organizations about the importance of music licensing, and facilitate the initial process of getting songwriters their royalties. Myers previously held the position of Operations Lead for the A&R team at SOCAN, where she was instrumental in ensuring that hiring was reflective of the culture and creators. Myers has also held positions in Label Operations Management, Publicity, sat on entertainment & music organization boards, adjudicated as part of FACTOR and JUNO Award juries, and has been a guest presenter for colleges and high schools throughout Canada.

As a part of the major music movement in Canada, Myers continues to lend her time to organizations like SOCAN Foundation and On The One, a knowledge hub built specifically for the gospel community. Myers joined ADVANCE as a member shortly after its launch in summer 2020.

Multi-JUNO Winning Platinum-Selling Producer + Songwriter CHRIS BIRKETT Releases “Precious Love”

0

Toronto’s Multi-JUNO Award winning and Platinum-selling producer, composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Chris Birkett has penned a passionate love letter in this, his new single — “Precious Love” available now.

Written with his muse in mind — his wife, documentary filmmaker Joan Prowse — the newly released song floats forward this month ahead of his forthcoming albums, Songs from the Kauai Hotel Room, and a collection of fun-loving songs with his new collective, The Happy Campers.

“I was performing in concert at Massey Hall with Buffy Sainte-Marie, when I met this attractive woman with a radiant smile,” Birkett recalls. “It was Joan, and she had made a documentary film about Buffy.”

A few years onward, the pair agreed to exchange Valentines in Paris — where Birkett was living and working at the time. “I was smitten by the love bug on this second meeting,” he shares.

Decidedly so: he proposed to Prowse the very next day.

“We were married at Metropolitan United Church, near where we first met,” he details of the downtown Toronto parish mere minutes around the corner from Massey Hall. “I wrote ‘Precious Love’ to celebrate our relationship, ten years after meeting up in Paris.

“It underscores how positive feelings can grow, and how love can transform people; people are precious, and relationships are the foundation of humanity.”

The song features some of Toronto’s finest musicians, including Bill King on keyboards, Gene Hardy on sax, Paul DeLong on drums, and background vocals from Taylor Abrahamse.

With album sales at over 100+ million copies worldwide, Birkett’s music collaborations have earned four JUNO Awards, a GRAMMY Award, a Polaris Music Prize, and three international AMPEX Golden Reel Awards for excellence in the music business.

He has worked with Buffy Sainte-Marie, Mel Brooks, Steve Earle, Bob Geldof, Alison Moyet, Dexys Midnight Runners, Talking Heads, The Pogues, and The Proclaimers — not to mention, recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of producing Sinead O’Connor’s seismic chart-topping release I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. His song “Where Do We Go From Here” was featured alongside Dire Straits, Bob Marley, U2, Peter Gabriel, and Queen, among others, on 1993’s One Voice, One Love compilation album in support of CARE International.

Hip Hop Artist MICHAEL J. FOXX & Vocalist SYDNEY SEXTON Reveal “Duality” Collaboration

0

Hot off the release of a handful of hot singles together in 2020, New York City-born hip-hop artist Michael J. Foxx and Canadian singer/songwriter Sydney Sexton have released their first-ever full-length album together: Duality is available now!

While Duality serves as the pair’s first fully-joint effort, they actually spent the majority of 2020 together, writing, recording and releasing music in their home studio together. Composed of 10 original hip-hop/ R&B tracks, their past releases include: “So High,” “Just Give it a Moment” and “Winners,” among several other sultry and upbeat tracks.

As well as a hip-hop artist, Michael is also an audio engineer and music producer. In the past 12 months, he has released numerous bodies of work including five mixtapes, multiple singles, and one solo album, When The Street Lights Come On. As an artist, he has a broad range of sound and technique inspired by all genres of music from hip-hop to rock nuance, it is quite unique. He says his music is rooted in the ups and downs and life. “I came up from nothing, now I’m ’bout something,” he adds. Though the Audio Engineering graduate was born and raised in New York City’s Harlem district, he now resides in Moncton, New Brunswick.

While she’s spent the last few years performing and writing music, it was only in 2020 that Sydney first made her way onto the music scene after she released a number of originals and posted them online. Since then, she’s been collaborating frequently with Michael. Though Sydney’s music is easily distinguishable because of her sweet voice and sultry sound, her range is wide, as she’s recorded songs which transcend from many of the genres which have influenced her. From R&B to pop and hip hop to contemporary, she’s covered a lot of ground in the last year.

In the making of Duality, Michael says “I was thinking along the lines of Yin and Yang, which inspired the black and white cover art. When we were coming up with the name for the album. We decided on Duality… It just seemed to fit.”

It is also worth noting that Michael produced three beats and exclusively completed all the vocal mixes on the collaboration album.

Sydney says: “We wanted to display both of our unique styles. Mine is more feminine and airy — R&B/Pop influenced; while Michaels is more masculine and commanding — Hip-Hop influenced, but our sounds just work so well together so we wanted to ensure we maintained the cohesiveness of the collaboration.”

Acclaimed, Grammy-Nominated Artist Mary Gauthier To Release Her First Book SAVED BY A SONG on July 6th

0

On July 6th, Grammy-nominated, award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier will add “author” to her list of accomplishments with the release of her first book Saved By A Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting (St. Martin’s Essentials). Part memoir, part musical spirit guide, Gauthier shares her incredible story and how the redemptive power of songs and songwriting can inspire and heal.

Saved By A Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting is about learning life’s lessons after living in the fire, some circumstantial and some self-imposed, and how those lessons shaped Gauthier, her views on humanity and how we are all connected. The book covers both ends of the emotional spectrum and so much of the in between. From addiction, abandonment and loss to compassion, empathy, kindness and ultimately triumph, Gauthier’s story is truly inspirational.

An Americana Music Association Award-winner, Mary Gauthier’s 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. The emotional and powerful album was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma they all experienced both abroad and at home. The album won “Album Of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019.

James Announce New Album “All The Colours Of You” Coming Out June 4

0

UK alternative band James are proud to announce the release of their new album All The Colours Of You on June 4, 2021 via Virgin Music Label & Artist Services (formerly Caroline International). Recorded in part before the Covid pandemic struck, the album was produced by the Grammy award-winning Jacknife Lee (Taylor Swift, U2, REM’s, Snow Patrol, The Killers). Fans can hear the title track “All The Colours Of You” on all streaming services now.

The songs on the new album were directly influenced by what bandleader and frontman Tim Booth experienced during a nearly apocalyptic time; with the pandemic raging while wildfires burned so close to Booth’s home that he had to evacuate three times over the course of a few months. The lyrics reflect the intense emotions Booth was experiencing, living as an expat in Los Angeles as the US was buffeted by ever-increasing political chaos in the last year of Trump’s presidency.

Matching the energy of the lyrics, producer Jacknife Lee brought a fresh approach to James’ sound, working remotely from his studio with Booth (Lee’s Topanga Canyon neighbor) and liaising in a daisy chain with fellow band member Jim Glennie, reimagining their demos, and capturing the band in all their virtual glory.

The result is a record with the most arena ready tracks of their 38-year career, the sound of one of Britain’s best bands, deconstructed and reassembled by one of the world’s most renowned producers.

Tim Booth says “With all the shit that went down in 2020 this was a miraculous conception and another big jump forward for us on the back of the last three albums. I hope it reflects the colours of these crazy times. Sweet 16 is a proper album, no fillers and is up there with our best.”

Bassist Jim Glennie says “I’m pleased, proud and surprised by this record in equal amounts. Jacknife has pushed us and the songs somewhere new and it’s very exciting. After all these years, we are still challenging ourselves and our fans.”

From the first line on album opener “ZERO”, ‘We’re all gonna die’, Tim addresses many difficult subjects throughout the 11 tracks, with themes ranging from politics and climate change, to dealing with the loss of a loved one during the pandemic.

Lead track “All The Colours Of You” tackles the Trump years head on. Based in the US for many years, Tim witnessed first-hand the divisiveness and hatred stoked by the former President. Highlighting the sharp rise of white supremacy during his reign, the track ultimately offers a glimmer of hope, a new and brighter future with the refrain ‘Love all the colours, all the colours of you’.

“Beautiful Beaches” focuses on the fires that ravaged California over the summer and came distressingly close to Tim and his family’s home. The song came after a vision Tim had of an earthquake and fires, which caused his family to race for refuge on beautiful beaches ‘That life we left behind, we’re racing down to those beautiful beaches’.

“Recover” is perhaps the most poignant track on the record, dealing with the death of Tim’s father-in-law from Covid-19 in the UK. A hopeful track, with a delicate production, it’s an uplifting and joyful song about honouring a loved one’s legacy and spirit, a celebration of life not the sadness of death ‘We will remember how to pass your spirit on’.

Since their breakthrough single in 1991, “Sit Down”, James have released fifteen studio albums, selling over 25 million copies in the process, and performed countless headline shows and festivals across the world. Many in the US will know James from their 1993 hit “Laid” which charted on the Billboard Hot 100, was featured as the theme song to the American Pie movies and has appeared numerous times in film and tv over the years. They continue to be a huge live draw, having sold 60,000 tickets for a UK arena tour scheduled for this November and December; a tour which has sold faster than any previous James tour. Their last US tour dates were a 2019 sold out, national run of shows with the Psychedelic Furs.

James are British music’s enduring gem. Says Booth, “The truth is we felt we were built to last.”

The Who Sell Out – Super Deluxe Edition Of The Classic Groundbreaking Album, Available April 23

0

Initially released in December 1967 and described latterly by Rolling Stone as ‘The Who’s finest album’ The Who Sell Out reflected a remarkable year in popular culture. As well as being forever immortalised as the moment when the counterculture and the ‘Love Generation’ became a global phenomenon and ‘pop’ began metamorphosing into ‘rock’.

The new Super Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out features 112 tracks, 46 of which are unreleased, an 80-page, hard-back full-colour book, including rare period photos, memorabilia, track by track annotation and new sleeve notes by Pete Townshend with comments from the likes of Pete Drummond (Radio Caroline DJ), Richard Evans (designer) & Roy Flynn (the Speakeasy Club manager)

The Super Deluxe package also includes nine posters & inserts, including replicas of
20” x 30” original Adrian George album poster, a gig poster from The City Hall, Newcastle, a Saville Theatre show 8-page programme, a business card for the Bag o’ Nails club, Kingly Street, a Who fan club photo of group, a flyer for Bath Pavilion concerts including The Who, a crack-back bumper sticker for Wonderful Radio London, Keith Moon’s Speakeasy Club membership card and a Who Fan Club newsletter.

As a taster for the set an EP of Pete Townshend’s previously unreleased demos has today been released on all streaming services including ‘Pictures Of Lily’ (New remix, previously unreleased)’ Kids! Do You Want Kids?’ (AKA Do You Want Kids, Kids?)  (Previously unreleased) & ‘Odorono’ (Previously unreleased).

The Who Sell Out was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers Kit Lambert & Chris Stamp, as a loose concept album including jingles and commercials linking the songs stylised as a pirate radio broadcast. This concept was born out of necessity as their label and management wanted a new album and Townshend felt that he didn’t have enough songs.

The ground-breaking original plan for Sell Out was to sell advertising space on the album but instead the band opted for writing their own jingles paying tribute to pirate radio stations and to parody an increasingly consumerist society.

The homage to pop-art is evident in both the advertising jingles and the iconic sleeve design created by David King who was the art director at the Sunday Times, and Roger Law who invented the Spitting Image TV show. The sleeve features four advertising images, taken by the renowned photographer David Montgomery, of each band member Odorono deodorant (Pete Townshend), Medac spot cream (Keith Moon), Charles Atlas (John Entwistle) and Roger Daltrey & Heinz baked beans. The story goes that Roger Daltrey caught pneumonia from sitting in the cold beans for too long.

The Who Sell Out is a bold depiction of the period in which it was made, the tail-end of the ‘swinging-60s’ meets pop-art mixed with psychedelia and straight-ahead pop. It’s a glorious blend of classic powerful Who instrumentation, melodic harmonies, satirical lyrical imagery crystallised for what was only the group’s third album. The album’s ambition and scope is unrivalled by the Who, or any other act from that period.

Within the bold concept, were a batch of fabulous and diverse songs. I Can See for Miles, a top ten hit at the time, is a Who classic. Rael, a Townshend ‘mini-opera’ with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy and the psychedelic blast of Armenia City In The Sky and Relax are among the very best material Townshend or anyone else wrote during the 1960s.

One of the most extraordinary albums of any era, The Who Sell Out is The Who’s last ‘pop’ album. Two years later came ‘Tommy’ – a double concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind kid.

0

With live music in lockdown and the return of tours still uncertain, rock group Queen has come up with a safe alternative – no masks, no social distancing, just the good old fashioned live experience, with ‘Queen: Rock Tour’, the band’s first ever official game for Android and iOS devices.

The arrival of the play-along rhythm game comes at a significant landmark for Queen. With 50 years now having passed since the 1971 recruiting of John Deacon, completing Queen’s classic line-up, 2021 marks a Queen Golden Jubilee that the band was hoping to celebrate with fans. A massive 29-date European stadium and arena tour planned for this year has been forced to be delayed to 2022.

Queen: Rock Tour gives players a chance to experience the majesty and might of the Queen [live] experience on their phones supported by extensive attention to detail contributed by the official Queen archives and experts. Hit the stage and perform with the entire band as you unleash your music talents to play thrilling guitar riffs, heart-pounding drum solos and much more. All you need to do is tap the tiles in time with the rhythm!

The game allows users to fully immerse themselves into the world of Queen – Progress and score points by playing along to 20 of their most popular hits including: Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Radio Ga Ga, I Want to Break Free and We Are The Champions, whilst performing at 10 historic concert venues from around the world.

Style your performances with over 40 official and iconic costumes from the band’s history and help unlock fun trivia facts and exclusive images from the official Queen archives, by scoring highly in the game.

Queen’s music has been featured in major mobile music games before, but for the first time ever the band will be releasing their own dedicated mobile experience in Queen: Rock Tour.

Queen remain one of the most popular groups in the world today, transcending multiple generations of fans, a position further buoyed by the phenomenal global success of their Academy Award-winning 2018 biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody, which tells the incredible story of the band’s historic career and quickly became the highest grossing music biopic in history.

The film’s title was inspired by their iconic 1975 single “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the world’s most-streamed song from the 20th Century and the first pre-1980’s song to achieve more than 1 billion video views.

Queen: Rock Tour was created in association with Universal Music Group, Hollywood Records and developed by Gameloft for brands, leader in the creation of gaming experiences for brands.

Rock Tour is certain to appeal to fans old and young alike and is sure to find a place in the hearts of the millions of Queen fans around the world.
