What Does Failing A Smog Check Mean?

0

If you live in the state of California, you know what smog is. The first reports of smog sightings started rolling in around 1943, and the problem got serious fast. People could not see more than three blocks ahead of them. There were numerous reports of stinging eyes and difficulties breathing, and the smog was blamed on a local power plant.

In the 70s, the state of California introduced strict environmental policies meant to crack down on environmentally unfriendly hazards and cut down smog for residents. Today, smog and pollutants have decreased by 80 percent since the California Air Resource Board (CARB) was created.

The Smog Check

One of the key policies introduced as part of California’s push to address air pollution was the Smog Check Program. Today, vehicles that are eight years old or older are required to have a smog check every two years, while all vehicles at least four years old are required to have a smog check when there is a change of owner.

Older vehicles have their own standard to meet and are not expected to perform as well as newer ones. Every vehicle is subject to smog checks, even government-owned ones. Electric powered vehicles and motor bikes are not, however.

The process of getting a smog check will only take about 20 to 30 minutes. You can get your vehicle checked out at a regular BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) licensed facility, and if directed to on your DMV renewal form, a special STAR station. It might be best to find a station that does tests and repairs, so you don’t need to drive back and forth if your car fails.

During a smog check, the inspector will look over your vehicle and test it thoroughly for emissions. The important step is when they check your tail pipe with a sniffer or car emission tester.

Once all of that is taken care of, the inspectors will then decide if your car passes the emission test. If it passed, they would send an electronic certificate to the DMV. This certificate will be valid for the next 90 days (about 3 months) for you to renew your vehicle’s registration.

Failing The Smog Check

If your vehicle doesn’t meet the smog check inspection’s standards, the DMV will not receive a certificate. The inspector should explain what is wrong with your vehicle and you could seek repairs. Since you can’t get your registration renewed, you won’t be able to drive your car legally without repairs.

It is important to note that although your vehicle is considered damaged and not smog check certified, you can still sell it if you wish. There will always be buyers for damaged cars.

What’s wrong with your car could widely vary. You might need to replace a rubber hose that could cost $150 for tests and repairs, or you might need to replace the entire catalytic converter, running you between $1,000 to $2,000. This could be too expensive for you, and you might be wondering what to do.

Luckily, the government of California offers the Consumer’s Assistance Program that gives you money to have your car’s emissions fixed. If your vehicle failed a biennial smog check this program could help you pay for repairs at a STAR test and repair location.

All you need to do is go on BAR’s website, look for the CAP program, see if you are eligible and apply. If you cannot apply online, call their office and they will mail you an application letter.

A vehicle from 1996 or newer, as of now, can get you $1,200 for repairs if you are eligible, while a vehicle from 1976 to 1995 can get you $900. You will still need to pay a copayment or the diagnosis and repairs. You can check out more details in their websites FAQ. If this still is not enough for you to be able to cover the repair, you might want to consider selling it and getting a new one instead.

So in conclusion, it is not the end of the world if your car doesn’t pass the smog check. It is there for a reason, to protect the environment and ensure safe breathable air for Californians. If your car fails a smog check, you can get it repaired, with some help from the state, or sell it off.

Life Gets Strange, Indeed — New EP from Phoenixville, PA Singer/Songwriter CLIFF HILLIS is Available Now

0

Life Gets Strange is the newest six-song EP by indie pop singer-songwriter, Cliff Hillis. This happy and uplifting EP is available on streaming services Spotify and Soundcloud, with the first single “Let’s Pretend” on YouTube.

“This is the fourth EP I’ve released, I decided it’s a much easier format to digest in such a short attention-span world, and it allows me to get music out quicker than recording a full album at a time,” says Hillis about the format of this EP. “I had to get fairly creative with social distanced recording. A number of the drum tracks were recorded in my garage (which, as it turns out, sound good!)

“My friend and bandmate in The Orchestra, Louis Clark Jr., recorded cello for the song ‘Seven Sisters’ in his UK flat and sent me digital tracks, long-time bandmate and co-producer, Greg Maragos sent numerous files he recorded at home, and we spent some Zoom sessions discussing the tracks and mixes, as well as countless emails and texts,” Hillis added about the process.

All songs on Life Gets Strange were written by Cliff Hillis except “Let’s Pretend” (written with Rhett Miller – Old 97’s), “Good Problems” (written with Kelley Ryan), and “Seven Sisters” (written with Kevin J. Killen). The EP was produced by Cliff Hillis and Greg Maragos, and was recorded and mixed by Cliff Hillis at The Hacienda. Additional recording by Greg Maragos at GPM Studios and Ritchie Rubini at Studio 825. It was mastered by Steve Turnidge at UltraViolet Studios, Seattle, WA.

Cliff Hillis is an award-winning songwriter, singer and producer. Hillis has a solid reputation as a highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and studio whiz. His previous releases have been praised by USA Today and The LA Times.

Howard Stern Extends His Agreement With SiriusXM

0

Howard Stern and SiriusXM today announced a new agreement under which the legendary broadcaster will continue to produce and host The Howard Stern Show exclusively for SiriusXM for the next five years, and the Howard Stern archive of audio and video will continue to be licensed to SiriusXM for an additional seven years. The news was first reported by Stern live during his show this morning.

Howard Stern has never been bigger. Regularly recognized as the best interviewer in the business, Howard’s insightful and revealing celebrity interviews gained even more acclaim since broadcasting from home under the Covid quarantine, bringing A-level comedians, musicians and actors via virtual connections into his home and he into theirs. His edgy comedy is sharper and more timely than ever. And his relationship with SiriusXM is at its strongest, as SiriusXM has grown to be the largest audio entertainment company in North America.

“Fifteen years ago, I joined SiriusXM, a fledgling group of broadcasters. I had been in a toxic relationship with terrestrial radio. And no matter how well I treated the medium, no matter how successful I made them, they abused me. Going to SiriusXM liberated me. I felt like Tina Turner freeing myself from Ike,” said Stern. “And despite the naysayers and the ridicule, we have persevered, and are thriving. I’ve been proven right about satellite radio over and over again. With this contract renewal, I can’t wait to see what else I’ll be right about. Certainly, I have a lot more to say about Metamucil crackers and stepmom porn. Plus, now that I can work from home, I simply don’t have an excuse to quit.”

“I would like to thank my incredible crew that I work with every morning and of course the talented Robin Quivers ,” said Stern. “Robin, we make a great team. Like Sonny and Cher, Captain and Tennille, Charles Manson and Squeaky Fromme, we continue our great friendship. I look forward to more laughs and good times. As a proud member of Bachelor Nation I say…Robin, will you accept my rose and dare I say, should you forgo your individual room, will you join me in the fantasy suite?”

Stern added: “I am honored to be a part of the greatest content provider in media today. SiriusXM, I love you and I’m thrilled to continue our journey together. If you haven’t listened to this wonderful service filled with music, talk, sports and just about anything you could want, please check it out. The SiriusXM app continues to grow and you will enjoy all of the Howard Stern and SiriusXM video content on there. Our next five years together will be incredible. Join the party.”

“As the leading audio entertainment company, we couldn’t be happier to have Howard, the leading host in all of radio and audio, continue to make SiriusXM the home for his show, channels, and archives while at the peak of his broadcasting career,” said Jim Meyer , CEO of SiriusXM. “Howard’s home has been SiriusXM and it will remain that way, but we’ve expanded SiriusXM in recent years too, and we are excited about finding the right ways that select content from Howard can find audiences on additional platforms. May I add, I consider Howard a close friend and look forward to listening to him for years to come.”

Gwen Stefani Releases New Single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself”

0

Global superstar Gwen Stefani releases her new reggae-tinged single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” today. With the release, Stefani is featured on New Music Daily on Apple Music. “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” is available now at all digital retailers.

Stefani will debut the single with a performance on tonight’s episode of The Voice, airing at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT, where she is now in her fifth season as a coach on NBC’s four-time Emmy Award-winning musical competition series.

Recorded in quarantine and co-written with relentless hitmaker Ross Golan alongside rising songwriter/producer Luke Niccoli, the single finds Stefani reminding fans of what she does best: create vibrant, uplifting music that is real and honest to who she is as an artist.

“This song is a way of saying I’m back with new music. It’s a fun, lighthearted song, because I got inspired and hopefully to bring a little bit of joy. The idea was to write a song that had a bit of a nostalgic feeling to it, so I think musically it reminds you of back in the day, going back to where I started musically which was with ska and reggae. I’m still the same me but here’s something a little bit new in case you feel like hearing a little bit more of me,” says Stefani.

Musically, “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” is a full-circle moment, with an instrumental that nods to her roots with the ska-punk band No Doubt. Bass-heavy beats and breezy acoustic guitars course under and around her laid-back vocals, as Stefani confidently asserts her space in the modern musical universe: “In case you forgot—no, I’m not records on your shelf.” The single also offers a sly callback: “I already gave you bananas,” she sings playfully, nodding to the cheerleader chant on her 2005 Pharrell Wiilliams-produced No. 1 hit, “Hollaback Girl.”

“Let Me Reintroduce Myself” caps off a busy year for Stefani. She had two top 10 hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart with fiancé Blake Shelton, “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.” And her holiday album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas, was just reissued with two new songs, including Ryan Tedder co-write “Here This Christmas.”

A three-time GRAMMY Award winner, Stefani, has achieved global success as, among other accomplishments, a performer, songwriter, frontwoman for ska-punk heroes No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. To date, she’s sold more than 50 million units worldwide. Her 2015 solo album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. If 2020 is any indication, listeners should keep an eye out for more from Stefani soon.

This Summer EP was released on the final date of the tour, September 6th. In 2020, Alessia brought a band in the studio to create the EP in a live studio environment. This Summer: Live Off The Floor; all six songs re-recorded and reimagined with live instrumentation. Alessia also made her acting debut as the lead role of Jane in Netflix’s original animated film “The Willoughbys.”

“Christmas 2020 will be a challenging one for the entire world,” Cianciulli considers. “If we can’t be with our families in person, I pray we can be together in spirit and music.

“With that in mind, I hope this song will weave its way through your heart.”

“Christmas Time This Year” is the latest creation from the multi-faceted artist, and lands ahead of her forthcoming album set for release this Spring, 2021.

To that, “Christmas Time This Year” enjoys two versions of its lyrics, with alternate words fitting for other locations.

“Even though I’m completing an album for a springtime release, I felt moved to write and release this song for Christmas,” she shares of the song and its especially meaningful lyrics. “I co-wrote these lyrics with my dear friend Vaughn Harbin; I wanted to mark what will be and is a very different time for everyone.”

Performer, public speaker, author, recording artist, mentor and unabashed fan-girl of the creative spirit, Tonia is intellectually curious as she is approachable, as accomplished as she is warm and giving, and as dedicated to her dreams as she is to her family. Tonia is an award winning author of ‘The Heart’s Obsession – An Intimate Biography of Newfoundland Songstress Georgina Stirling’ (1867-1935), with Flanker Press, and has received glowing reviews from CBC, Opera Canada Magazine, and singer Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea.
