Bachman + Bachman: An evening of storytelling, jazz standards and the greatest hits from Randy and Tal Bachman

0

The TD Toronto Jazz Festival is pleased to announce Bachman + Bachman, a specially curated performance by Canadian icon Randy Bachman and his son, Tal Bachman. Bachman + Bachman, presented by Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), world premieres on December 17, 2020 (7pm) on JAZZ.FM91 and streams simultaneously on Youtube and Facebook. This performance will be rebroadcast; for more information visit www.torontojazz.com.

This special concert, created specifically for the Festival, features the legendary singer in an intimate and acoustic setting performing some of the well-known jazz standards that helped to inspire his signature sound. Throughout this up close and personal evening, Randy, along with his son Tal, will tell stories about some of his most iconic songs and perform a setlist that includes a mix of jazz standards, selections from the incredible catalogues of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) and two surprises with songs from artists who had number one hits in the USA. Four local acts will round out the evening as we celebrate the music of an icon whose influence reaches across genres and spans generations. Each will perform their interpretation of a Bachman song.

“I am humbled, honoured and very proud to be part of this music celebration at this difficult time,” states Randy Bachman. “We all need music, love and each other to get through this dark period. This concert and collection of amazing Canadian talent will do that. It is also special for me to perform with my son Tal in this intimate format. Gigi, Brooke, HBB, and Kaia created beautiful renditions of my songs which surprised me as they will you. Celebrate, enjoy, sing along, stay safe and let’s pray for tomorrow.”

The four local acts invited to contribute to the performance reflect the Festival’s commitment to supporting local musicians at varying stages of career development. Rich in the tradition of the blues with a family legacy that runs deep, Brooke Blackburn’s guitar style uniquely translates to his audiences in a very bonding and human way every time he plays. The Heavyweights Brass Band have built a reputation as Canada’s reigning champions of feel-good horn music with one foot firmly planted in the tradition of jazz while the other foot steps forward into the future. Armed with a jazz-fueled voice and deft songcraft with old-time banjo-picking skills, Kaia Kater has quickly established herself as a star in the making with critical acclaim from NPR, CBC Radio, Rolling Stone and BBC Music. Genevieve Marentette is a staple on the Toronto jazz scene, known for her fearless live approach to song interpretation and diverse recordings and collaborations.

All performances have been pre-recorded and the evening is generously presented by OLG along with TD, Inniskillin, Toronto Star and Celebrate Ontario, Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries.

“OLG has a long history of supporting festivals that bring people together and strengthen communities, which is more important now than ever. Supporting community events is part of OLG’s commitment to making Ontario a better place to live. We have been a proud sponsor of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival for nine years and are thrilled to be continuing the celebrations this year” says Jennifer Barban, Director, Community Programs, OLG.

Little Steven And The Disciples Of Soul’s Thrilling Tribute To The Beatles, ‘Macca To Mecca,’ Receiving Wide Release On CD/DVD on January 29

0

In the fall of 2017, when Little Steven landed in Liverpool on his sold out European tour with his newly reformed band the Disciples of Soul in support of Soulfire, his first new album in nearly two decades, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician, songwriter and lifelong Beatles fan played an extraordinary surprise set outside of the legendary Cavern Club as a tribute to the seminal band that inspired him and so many others to pick up a guitar and start a band after witnessing their musical revolution on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964. The intimate lunchtime gig saw Little Steven aka Stevie Van Zandt lead his 15-strong band through rocking renditions of “Magical Mystery Tour,” “Good Morning, Good Morning,” “Got To Get You Into My Life,” and “All You Need Is Love,” alongside iconic songs famously performed by the nascent Fab Four, including “Boys” (originally by The Shirelles), “Slow Down” (by Larry Williams) and “Soldier Of Love” (first recorded by Arthur Alexander).

“Playing in the same venue where The Beatles started their careers was a childhood dream of mine come true,” says Van Zandt. “This was a band that set me on course for a life of music. For my rock ‘n’ roll religion, The Cavern is the first sacred site (after the 4 clubs in Hamburg they played!). It was an honor – no, make that an epiphany – to perform there.”

Fortunately for those that weren’t there to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event, the concert was professionally filmed and expertly recorded by Van Zandt’s touring film and audio crew and is now slated for wide release on CD/DVD as Macca To Mecca on January 29 via Wicked Cool Records/UMe. The 13-song love letter to the Beatles kicks off with a riveting performance of “I Saw Her Standing There” recorded at The Roundhouse in London in November of 2017 with a special appearance by Paul McCartney.

Macca To Mecca, which was previously only available as part of the vinyl box set and Blu-ray editions of his concert album, Soulfire Live!, includes the complete Cavern Club concert in both video and audio, exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and a special documentary that sees Van Zandt honored with a brick in the club’s hallowed Wall of Fame before leading his band through swift rehearsals of Beatles songs mere minutes ahead of their performance.

The Macca To Mecca concert audio has also been added to a newly expanded 4CD version of SOULFIRE LIVE!, which will be also be released on January 29. Culled from the best performances from the band’s North American and European concerts, this live collection features Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul taking listeners through a musical history lesson as they blast through an arsenal of songs spanning rock, pop, soul, blues, funk, doo-wop, reggae and everything in between. Nearly every song from his 2016 album SOULFIRE is represented along with inspired covers and classic tracks from his early catalog. Among the album’s many highlights are original songs from throughout Little Steven’s illustrious solo career – including classics like “Standing In The Line Of Fire” and “I Don’t Want To Go Home” – alongside a number of favorite cover versions like The Electric Flag’s “Groovin’ Is Easy,” Etta James’ “Blues Is My Business,” and James Brown’s “Down And Out In New York City. In addition, SOULFIRE LIVE! includes Van Zandt’s inimitable introductions, detailing each song’s unique history and singular spot in his life and illustrious career. Disc 3 showcases special guest appearances from some of Van Zand’ts closest friends, collaborators, and favorite artists and includes inspired versions of Moby Grape’s “Can’t Be So Bad” performed with the legendary San Francisco band’s founding member, Jerry Miller; the Motown classic, “Can I Get A Witness,” performed with New Jersey’s own Richie Sambora; The J. Geils Band’s “Freeze Frame” with vocals from the one and only Peter Wolf; and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and Little Steven’s own “I Don’t Want To Go Home,” both joined by Bruce Springsteen.

In a year like no other, Van Zandt has kept extraordinarily busy with a slew of releases and projects, including the release of Rock N Roll Rebel – The Early Work, a multi-format box set that collects together all of his pioneering early solo career albums between 1982 and 1999, as well as the landmark protest album, Sun City, by Artists United Against Apartheid, the supergroup of musicians brought together by Van Zandt and record producer Arthur Baker to fight racial injustice in South Africa; an acclaimed new record with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band; and an exuberant new holiday song penned for Netflix’s just-released movie, “The Christmas Chronicles 2,” directed by Chris Columbus. The joyous, soul-filled romp, “The Spirit Of Christmas,” sees him reuniting with his friend, the incomparable Darlene Love, who he worked with on their holiday hit “All Alone on Christmas” for “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York,” and her raved about 2015 album, Introducing Darlene Love, which he produced. The song is featured prominently in the sequel with a joyous onscreen musical number performed by Love and Kurt Russell who bring some Christmas magic to weary holiday travelers in a bustling airport terminal in the 1990s.

In celebration of “The Spirit of Christmas” and the Christmas spirit, Van Zandt, who regularly DJs on his Little Steven’s Underground Garage channel on SiriusXM and the nationally syndicated show of the same name, has put together a playlist featuring some of his favorite holiday songs. Kicking off with Chuck Berry’s immortal “Run Rudolph Run,” “Little Steven’s Christmas Party Playlist” mixes up Christmas classics with lesser known gems and includes songs by Bob Seger, The Kinks, Slade, Brian Setzer, Jan & Dean, Louis Prima, Joe Pesci, Dion and Ringo Starr alongside Van Zandt’s original Christmas tunes, “The Spirit Of Christmas,” “All Alone on Christmas” and his inspired, horn-drenched rendition of The Ramones’ “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want To Fight Tonight).” Listen here: https://LittleSteven.lnk.to/ChristmasPlaylistPR

On January 29, Geffen/UMe is set to release The Mamas & The Papas’ If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears on black vinyl. Reaching No. 1 on the Billboard album charts within months of release and spending more than 100 weeks on the chart, the Lou Adler-produced gem opens with the No. 1 hit “Monday, Monday” and includes “California Dreamin’,” which hit No. 4 on the Billboard singles chart.

On January 29, 2021, Geffen/UMe is set to release The Mamas & The Papas’ ‘If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears’ on black vinyl. Also, the album will be available on opaque yellow vinyl exclusively at uDiscover Music and Sound of Vinyl. Considered one of the best pop-rock albums of all time, the 12-song 1966 debut showcases the exquisite pop sensibilities and impeccable harmonies of Cass Elliot, Denny Doherty, John Phillips and Michelle Phillips.

While best known for its two hits, If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears, features a mix of originals and covers that captivated fans and critics alike. The album is included in the top 100 of the influential reference guide 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In their pursuit of pop music perfection, The Mamas & The Papas signed in 1965 and disbanded shortly after their performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, where “Monday, Monday” was first performed live. In between, the foursome embarked on what has become a storied career during their brief time together. Contributing to their status as pop culture icons were unforgettable performances on The Ed Sullivan Show, including the John Phillips penned classic “Monday, Monday,” their interpretation of Lennon & McCartney’s “I Call Your Name” and “California Dreamin'” co-written by John and Michelle Phillips.

Both vinyl reissues will include the original cover photo, which was censored at the time for showing a toilet. First released on February 28, 1966, If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears opens with the chart-topping ode to the first day of the work week, followed by the upbeat, bass-heavy rocker “Straight Shooter.” On “Got A Feelin’,” co-written by Denny Doherty and John Phillips, a ticking clock underscores the melancholy vibe that someone is cheating; “Go Where You Wanna Go,” “Somebody Groovy” and “Hey Girl” round out the original compositions with the musical and lyrical flair that defined their style. The Mamas & The Papas also brought their easy-listening harmonies to Leiber & Stoller’s “Spanish Harlem” and Bobby Freeman’s “Do You Wanna Dance,” while gently rocking to The Turtles’ “You Baby.” Cass Elliot’s rollicking cover of Billy Page’s “The ‘In’ Crowd” closes the album.

The label released historic albums by Big Mama Thornton, Clifton Chenier, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, and Mississippi Fred McDowell, among countless other revered singers and musicians.

On December 10th the Arhoolie Foundation, with the support of Smithsonian Folkways, will present a free virtual concert via YouTube celebrating the legacy of Arhoolie Records and the 25th anniversary of the Arhoolie Foundation. The event will be hosted by Nick Spitzer of public radio’s American Routes, and will feature exclusive performances from Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, Billy Gibbons, Ry Cooder, Charlie Musselwhite, Del McCoury, Los Texmaniacs, Savoy Family Band, La Marisoul, Cedric Watson, The Campbell Brothers, and more. Smithsonian Folkways will be celebrating this momentous 60th anniversary milestone by launching a new digital exhibition on Arhoolie. The new website features rarely seen images of Lipscomb, Black Ace, Bukka White, Lydia Mendoza, Flaco Jiménez, and many more, as well as essays by Smithsonian Folkways’ Jeff Place, Nicole Mullen of the SFO Museum, and Strachwitz himself; playlists of classic music from the catalog; and a definitive discography. The new website offers fans an immersive journey through the history of the label, digging deep into Strachwitz’s relationship to the artists, the story behind the label’s name and logo, and the label’s enduring legacy. Folkways has also created a dedicated Bandcamp page for Arhoolie, featuring over 100 titles available on Bandcamp for the first time.

Arhoolie Records was acquired by Smithsonian Folkways in 2016. Smithsonian Folkways’ mission to collect and preserve traditional music from around the world has led to the acquisition of many iconic labels since the original Folkways Records catalog was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1987. Arhoolie is joined by Paredon, the pioneering protest music label co-founded by Barbara Dane, acquired in 1991; Folk-Legacy Records, featuring a plethora of material from the ʼ60s folk revival, in 2019; the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music, in 2014; and more as a part of the Smithsonian Folkways label group. The material on Right on Rhythm will remain in print in perpetuity, like all music in the Smithsonian Folkways catalog. In 2019 Rolling Stone reported on the label’s efforts to preserve traditional music from around the world, offering a glimpse into the way this music is archived.

The Arhoolie Foundation is a non-profit organization rooted in the life’s work of its founder Chris Strachwitz and his acclaimed label Arhoolie Records. The foundation’s mission is to document and celebrate blues, Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, Tejano/Norteño, old-time, and other tradition-based styles of music through archival preservation, exhibits, community and educational outreach, live performance, and direct support to artists.

Famously taking their name from ‘It’s the buzz, cock’, a headline from a Time Out review of 1970s TV music drama ‘Rock Follies,’ Buzzcocks formed in Manchester in 1976 by Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto, who have a strong claim to have kickstarted a musical revolution in Manchester having organized and played at the now famous Sex Pistols show at the city’s Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976, a show which inspired and spawned the likes of Joy Division, The Fall and The Smiths.

Having recorded and pressed their debut EP, Spiral Scratch, in December 1976 for a cost of £500 (the single would go on to sell 16,000 copies in the first six months of release on their own New Hormones label), the band soon underwent personnel changes with founder Howard Devoto leaving before they signed to United Artists and embarked on the recording of their debut album.

Released in March 1978, their debut Another Music In A Different Kitchen was followed a mere 6 months later by Love Bites which featured their highest charting single, and arguably best-known song, “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve).”

After releasing a third album, A Different Kind Of Tension, in 1979 the band continued for a couple of years before finally disbanding in 1981. The band would reform in 1989 for a number of shows and they continued to play live and record albums featuring original members Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle until Pete’s untimely passing in December 2018.

Most recently, in June 2019, Steve Diggle hosted a very special show at the Royal Albert Hall by way of a celebration of Shelley’s life and musical genius which featured guests Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Captain Sensible and Dave Vanian (The Damned), Peter Perrett (Only Ones), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Richard Jobson (Skids) and Pauline Murray (Penetration), as well as “classic line up” Buzzcocks members John Maher and Steve Garvey. With the band coalescing around original member Steve Diggle, they plan to gig and record once again once through the current situation. The Buzzcocks story continues.
