What do Motƶrhead, Black Sabbath, Elvis Costello, Rush and Chumbawamba have in common? Kim Hawes, pioneering female tour manager. Kim Hawes spent years sleeping underneath Lemmy from Motorhead… on a tour bus. She feuded with the members of Black Sabbath, tripped mushrooms on stage with Hawkwind, faced down the Hells Angels and escalated band prank wars. She threw Madonna off her stage, turned down an invite from Nelson Mandela, and dealt with the aftermath of Chumbawamba drenching John Prescott. Through hard work, hard drinking and hard times, Kim refused to conform to others’ expectations. She hurled a TV through the glass ceiling of the male-dominated music industry, blazing a trail for young women today. She carved out a place for women in a largely man’s world, taking no crap and no prisoners while getting results other tour managers only dreamed of. This memoir of the nitty gritty of life on the road – the fights, the dares, the smashed hotel rooms and even an encounter with a Soviet submarine – is full of fresh stories about the famous names you think you know. Lipstick and Leather: On the road with the world’s most notorious rock stars is a must read for anyone who wants a fresh insight into life on the road.

āRoad Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Bandā Documentary Film to Launch on Hulu and Disney+ This October
Hulu and Disney+ today announced that they will launch āRoad Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Bandā in October of this year. An exact launch date is forthcoming.
Springsteen and The E Street Band offer the most in-depth look ever at the creation of their legendary live performances in the new documentary featuring unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to their 2023-2024 world tour. āRoad Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Bandā opens a new door to Springsteenās creative process for fans around the world, sharing fly-on-the-wall footage of band rehearsals and special moments backstage ā as well as hearing from Springsteen himself. These conversations follow Springsteen closely as he develops the story he wants to tell with this tourās setlist ā interspersed with rare archival clips of The E Street Band, underscoring themes of life, loss, mortality and community. In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteenās memoir āBorn to Run,ā āSpringsteen on Broadway,ā and the films āWestern Starsā and āLetter to You.ā
The film was directed by Springsteenās longtime collaborator, Emmy and GRAMMY Award-winner Thom Zimny (āWestern Stars,ā āThe Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash,ā āSpringsteen on Broadway,ā āWillie Nelson & Family,ā āSlyā), and produced by Zimny, Jon Landau, Bruce Springsteen, Adrienne Gerard and Sean Stuart. The film begins with a one-of-a-kind look at the bandās preparation process, following them from their earliest rehearsals in Red Bank, New Jersey to performances for tens-of-thousands across continents. All the while, fans get the chance to experience professionally shot footage from the 2023-2024 tour for the first time ever ā in addition to hearing firsthand from band members about performing on stage with Springsteen and how they keep the magic of The E Street Band as potent as ever.
Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band capped the first 2024 leg of their world tour in April, a cross-country U.S. run that brought surprise guests, blistering three-hour shows and setlist rarities (totaling 60 different songs through 11 performances). The band is in the midst of playing 25 shows throughout Europe this spring and summer ā after last yearās European tour sold 1.6 million tickets ā and will return to North America for more dates from August through late November.
James Brown’s Electrifying 1971 Rome Performance: A Soul Legend in Full Force
My Next Read: “The Devilās Music: How Christians Inspired, Condemned, and Embraced Rock ānā Rol” by Randall J. Stephens
When rock ānā roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the musicās demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was āever working in the world for evil.ā Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry.Ā The Devilās MusicĀ tells the story of this transformation.
Rockās origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock ānā rollās popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this āblasphemous jungle music,ā with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed.
Stephens argues that in the early days of rock ānā roll, faith served as a vehicle for whitesā racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesusās message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephensās compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.
Genesis’ 14 Studio Albums To Be Reissued On 180g Vinyl Worldwide
This year, 14 Genesis studio albums released between 1970 and 1997 will be reissued on vinyl worldwide.
Pressed on 180g vinyl, the reissuesāfeaturing Nick Davis mixed and remastered versionsāwill be available throughout the year. Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (2LP), Duke, Abacab, Genesis, Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound, Wind & Wuthering, We Canāt Dance (2LP), Calling All Stations (2LP), A Trick Of The Tail, …And Then There Were Threeā¦, and Invisible Touch are available HERE with Trespass coming September 27th.
The albums follow the Rock and Roll Hall of Famersā journey to become one of the best-selling bands in the world. Formed in 1967 by school friends Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, and Mike Rutherford, the bandās lineup solidified in the early ā70s with the addition of drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett. They established themselves as prog-rock innovators with albums like Trespass (1970) and Selling England by the Pound (1973).
After Gabrielās departure in 1975, Collins took over as frontman. By the late ā70s, the band had transformed into a pop-oriented trio, scoring hits with āFollow You Follow Meā and āMisunderstandingā from And Then There Were Three… (1978) and Duke (1980).
Each member pursued successful solo careers in the ā80s while Genesis dominated international charts with a string of six platinum and multi-platinum albums, including Abacab, Genesis, and Invisible Touch. In 1991, We Canāt Dance marked Collinsā final studio album with the band. Banks and Rutherford returned in 1997 with singer Ray Wilson for Calling All Stations, the groupās final studio album.
Trespass (1970) marked the beginning of Genesisā progressive rock phase, exploring multifaceted song structures and mythological themes on tracks like āThe Knifeā and āStagnation.ā
Nursery Cryme (1971) featured the debut of Collins and Hackett and established the bandās signature sound with intricate musical passages and theatrical storytelling on āThe Musical Boxā and āThe Return of the Giant Hogweed.ā
Foxtrot (1972) remains a landmark in prog rock and includes the epic āSupper’s Ready,ā a 23-minute suite showcasing Genesisā ambitious compositional style and lyrical depth. The album charted at No. 12 on the UK. Albums, No. 15 on the French Albums chart, and No. 15 on the Italian Albums.
Selling England By The Pound (1973) is widely regarded as one of the bandās finest, combining lyrics about English life with complex, melodic instrumentation on songs like āDancing With The Moonlit Knightā and āFirth Of Fifthā with its iconic piano introduction.
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974) is a double concept album that tells the surreal story of Rael using elaborate sounds and lyrical imagery. It was Gabrielās final album with Genesis and features experimental tracks like āIn The Cageā and the haunting āCarpet Crawlers.ā
A Trick Of The Tail (1976), the first with Collins on vocals, maintained the bandās progressive rock tradition with virtuosic playing on āDancing On A Volcanoā while highlighting its melodic sensibility on āRipplesā and āEntangled.ā
Wind & Wuthering (1976), the last with Hackett, demonstrated the bandās ability to craft intricate, emotionally resonant songs like āBlood On The Rooftopsā and āOne For The Vine.ā
…And Then There Were Three⦠(1978), the first album released as a trio, retained some progressive rock elements but marked a shift toward a more accessible sound. The single āFollow You Follow Meā became the bandās first major hit.
Duke (1980) offered an ambitious blend of prog rock and pop sensibilities on the hit singles āDuchess,ā āMisunderstanding,ā and āTurn It On Again.ā It was the bandās first No. 1 album in the U.K., reaching No. 11 in America.
Abacab (1981) marked a significant stylistic shift as Genesis embraced a more radio-friendly sound and leaner production. It yielded three Top 40 hits in the U.S. with āAbacab,ā āMan On The Corner,ā and āNo Reply At All,ā which featured the horn section from Earth, Wind & Fire.
Genesis (1983) captured the groupās evolving sound, mixing pop and rock with darker themes on singles like āMama,ā āThatās All,ā and āTaking It All Too Hard.ā The album reached the Top 5 across Europe, hitting No. 1 in the UK and Germany.
Invisible Touch (1986) was Genesisā most commercially successful album, peaking at No. 1 in Canada, the UK, and New Zealand and reaching the Top 5 across most of Europe. The title track, “In Too Deep,ā āLand Of Confusion,ā and āTonight, Tonight, Tonightā were all Top 5 hits.
We Canāt Dance (1991), the final album with Collins, ended an era for the band on a high note, becoming Genesisā fifth consecutive No. 1 album in the UK, as well as in Austria, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and Switzerland. The hits continued with āNo Son Of Mine,ā āHold On My Heart,ā and the GRAMMYĀ®-Award nominated āI Canāt Dance.ā
Calling All Stations (1997), Genesisā only album with singer Ray Wilson, explored a darker, more atmospheric direction. The albumās standout tracks include āCongo,ā āShipwrecked,ā and the title track.
Genesisā generation-spanning catalog includes 15 studio albums, six live LPs, and dozens of charting singles. In addition to its 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has received a coveted Ivor Novello Award, a GRAMMYĀ®, an American Music Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at Britainās Progressive Music Awards.
