Sudbury/Toronto’s Alt-Pop Artist & Producer MIKOH Peels Back Social Fakery in New Video for “La La Land”

0

Singer, songwriter and producer Mikoh removes the filter and does away with the facade found in social media and social climbing alike in her newest alt-pop single, “La La Land” — available now.

“This song was written with the intention of commenting on how what we see on social media affects us in ways we might not understand,” the multi-talented French-Canadian artist says. “I wanted to talk about the online culture that enables some to feel like they are unworthy.

“It’s also a commentary on the ‘fast life,’” she continues. “The ‘partying’ and surrounding yourself with people that are only around for clout. It’s an interesting space to be in and, although it can seem like fun, it usually comes at a price.

“These two situations affect the other, and the cycle of false perception often leads to a misconstrued idea of what life is really about — especially for young people that are heavily influenced by media.”

“La La Land” is Mikoh’s most recent single from her Strange Lullabies project. Decidedly dark and dramatic, the self-produced track is the fourth in line since her debut release, “Bright Eyes” earlier this year, and was engineered in collaboration with The Orange Lounge’s Anthony Jordan (Majid Jordan, Roy Woods, Pressa).

Classically trained, the Sudbury-born, Toronto-based artist’s growing archive of arrangements are rife with evocative, hypnotizing textures accompanied by the kind of reflective insights that can best be gleaned from the wake of a tumultuous coming-of-age.

No better place is this heard than “La La Land.”

“It was written during a time where I realized that releasing music and being a part of that cycle as a part of the job would mean I’d need to take on some responsibility to protect an impressionable audience and be conscious of my output,” she considers. “I wanted to voice my opinion that, although the perception of others can seem beautiful and glamorous, it’s only superficial. There’s always more to someone’s life than it seems; nothing is ever perfect, even if it seems like it.”

Winnipeg, MB’s Alt-Metal Prog-Rockers HELFREYA Merge Love & Death in Debut LP Shieldmaiden — Available Now

0

Canadian alt-metal prog-rockers Helfreya beckon audiences down a sonically daring tunnel of psychedelic doom-jazz in this, their debut breakthrough release Shieldmaiden — available now.

Fronted by vocalist Violet Vopni, of Metis and Icelandic descent, Helfreya rounds out with guitarist Keith Meyer, bassist Russ Maskus, and drummer Travis Stephenson. The Winnipeg-based band draws on Norse and Celtic mythology in their songwriting, and the name is derived from two Norse Goddesses: Hel, the Goddess of death, and Freya, the Goddess of love.

“We’re the duality between light and dark,” the band says, “and the enigmatic amalgamation of love and death.

“We take fans on a strange adventure.”

“This is an album that has been over 20 years in the making,” Vopni shares. “Keith, Russ and Travis had spent decades crafting their instrumental sound in their former punk rock band, Wormhole.”

“We were just waiting for the perfect singer/songwriter to join the project,” Meyer offers.

“After a few failed attempts, we met Violet and something instantly clicked,” Maskus adds.

“For my part, I’d also spent decades crafting my songwriting and vocal style, but had trouble finding the right musicians to accompany the lyrics and melodies,” Vopni continues. “After my own few failed attempts, this was a perfect match up.”

The result is Helfreya and their debut LP, Shieldmaiden; while there are legacy creations on the release — such as “Dreaming,” originally written in 1996 by Vopni when she was 11 years old — the album’s title track was the first song she wrote for the new collaborative efforts. Quickly becoming a fan-favourite, it proved to them something special was afoot.

“The album is a mix of heavier and softer sounds, and brings to light each band member’s personal musical tastes while showcasing their talents,” Stephenson says.

Strange adventure, indeed.

Indianapolis’ Hip Hop/R&B Artist/Producer KEITH PHELPS Questions & Translates Signs of the Times into Fifth Album ‘Stimulus Package’

0

Hip hop R&B artist and producer Keith Phelps has channelled his visionary insights into prescient lyricism with this, his timely new album Stimulus Package and premiere single “Need 2 Know” — both available now.

The multi-talented musician and creator recently toured as the keyboardist for Haley Reinhart (Season 10 American Idol finalist), and can also be seen playing alongside R&B legend Jon B, or with his band, The Conglomerate. In 2017, he scored Nathan Cheney’s film, A Fatherless Generation, starring George Lopez, Terry Crews, Aisha Tyler, and Bret Ernst.

“I create ‘audible chicken and noodle soup for the soul,’” Phelps says of his sound. “I’m constantly creating music with the intent to aid the inner well-being of the listener.

“Stimulus Package and ‘Need 2 Know’ are part of that. The album is meant to uplift, but also address the heartache of the global pandemic and social injustices plaguing the world.

“It’s literally supposed to be the soundtrack that would get you through this unprecedented time.”

His fifth album release, Stimulus Package was written and produced as Phelps’ personal processing of the year’s tumultuous time. “COVID-19 really put my back up against the wall,” he recalls. “I knew that, whether the gig was local or beyond, we musicians were not going to be able to go back to making our living the way we did before the pandemic.

“Amid uncertainty, fear, and anxiety, I consciously set out to make a project with intentions of changing my life forever. Furthermore, I really wanted to make something that would give people hope to combat the constant barrage of negative news within the media.

“‘Need 2 Know’ could be argued as a ‘conspiracy theory anthem,’” Phelps considers of the track, which features Gerald Law II. “But more than anything, they are just urban think pieces that encourage people to ask the next questions with regards to the information they’re receiving.

“I’m all about providing additional schools of thought that inspire others to challenge or verify, or possibly change their life’s perspective.”

Phelps suggests the same could be said of the album’s title track, “Stimulus Package”; the remaining songs on the seven-track release round out the artist’s signature sage song-craft.

“Songs like ‘2-Step Dip’ and ‘Wolf’ lightheartedly highlight the ‘first world’ social media commentary that follows our ‘inconveniences’ due to our current global predicament,” he offers. “The unassuming crown jewel of this project, however, comes from the Kalita Records sample of ‘Take A Moment’ by Carrie Cleveland in ‘Love Me.’ I unknowingly, predictively, and genuinely wrote this song two months before the global ignition of the Black Lives Matter movement and what many would consider to be a new beginning for racial and social reform.”

Keith Phelps’ Stimulus Package (2020) follows previous album releases Any Given Phriday (2018), Real.Beautiful.MUSIC (2015), PHiNDiNG Myself (2014), and his debut, Phelps Phriday Mixtape (2013). Early 2020 also brought the single “Never Thought” with Dayve Stewart.

Now, amidst a global pandemic where live music as we once experienced it is paused indefinitely, Phelps is holding dear to Stimulus Package as both a lighthouse of sorts for his audience, industry peers, and — most definitely — himself.

“Silver Lining,’ while serving as the last track, was the first of the songs written and produced for this project,” he shares. “It was specifically written to express how I felt as an entertainment professional.

“The timing of the pandemic seemed unbelievably disappointing and almost unfair. I was just coming into a newfound confidence with regard to my ambitions and artistic efforts.

“‘Silver Lining’ became my personal beacon of hope.”

Stimulus Package is available now.

Montreal Brother/Sister Duo JUST COSTA Set Sights on a “Bubblegum Sky” With New Summer Bop – Available Now!

0

Canadian brother-sister popster duo Just Costa are gazing up and out at a “Bubblegum Sky” when it comes to this, their latest summer bop and stunning lyric visualizer — available now!

The Montreal-based fam-band embodies the term “happy-go-lucky” through and through, and counts music like a ticket to their own sonic theme park. “We call it Just Costa Land,” quips Jesse Just Costa, who leads the outfit with older sibling Juliana. “It’s like this: We want to bring the sense of an amusement park to our music. The excitement, the enthusiasm, the joie de vivre, the willingness to be happy and grateful and positive and live life to the extreme; that’s what we’re trying to construct.”

Between them, they have all the building blocks they need in a sort of supernatural blend of style, skill and substance that takes a lifetime to achieve. Which is about how long the Just Costas have been making music.

By age 13, guitar prodigy Jesse was taking Montreal’s rock scene by storm, playing lead and fronting his own outfit. Meanwhile, Juliana had begun a solo career as an acoustic singer-songwriter. The turning point came a few years ago, when she was heading to Vancouver to record. Jesse decided to tag along, and in need of material, they began to write together for the sessions. The magic was instant. “We weren’t just putting catchphrases over standard chords; we were writing these intricate, meaningful songs,” Jesse recalls. “That really solidified things. That’s when we really hit the ground running together.”

They haven’t slowed. Since joining forces (and fittingly combining their parents’ surnames for their handle), they’ve more than made up for any lost time. They’ve appeared on talent show La Voix (The Voice), played over 400 shows — including a 16-date tour of Italy — performed at festivals and conferences (including the MUZ showcase in Montreal, where they took home a trio of people’s choice awards), released one album — In Time, All Things under their previous moniker Juliana & Jesse — and are midway through writing and recording a new full-length. More focused and ambitious, their newer material takes full advantage of their creative kinship and shared vision — while also acknowledging their different musical backgrounds and skill sets. “One of our greatest strengths in working together is how varied our individual strengths are,” Jesse explains. “I know where Juliana has me beat, and where she might be able to handle a situation twice as well, and I feel like she knows the same about me. So that’s where the lines get drawn.”

As if on cue, she picks up the thread: “For the most part, Jesse has a real knack for melody and chords, and groove as well. So he’ll put something down and we can play off that. And I really like to write lyrics, so we’ll play off of each other. We work together really well in that sense. Other times, I’ll have a really simple kind of idea on the guitar and I can always count on Jesse to spice it up. It’s always good to have a partner in any venture, and there’s no better partner than family. We are really connected — we’re also best friends — and we really do see it as a big blessing. We’re not scared to push each other. And by bringing the best out of each other, we’ve reached some really cool and unique places songwriting-wise that we might not have found. And we feel we have something really special we can bring to people.”

That gift in a nutshell: Love. “I break down life into two really simple things: doing what you love and doing it with the people that you love,” Jesse says. “That’s really where the magic comes from. That’s when the highs start getting higher and the lows don’t feel so bad. That’s what we have, and that’s what we want to share with people. Really, we want to light up every room that we go into. I feel such an energy and positivity inside of me and so much gratitude for everything I have. We want to bring that to ourselves and to bring other people with us. We want … ”

Naturally, Juliana finishes his thought: “We want to take everybody along for the ride.”

The destination? Just Costa Land, of course. Enjoy the trip and get ready to groove.

Neil Young Releases Video For “Lookin’ For A Leader 2020”

0

NEIL YOUNG has released a video for “Lookin’ For A Leader 2020” from the recent Porch Episode of his acclaimed Fireside Sessions livestream series. “Lookin’ For A Leader 2020” is now viewable on YouTubeThe original version of the track appeared on Young’s 2006 masterpiece LIVING WITH WAR.  This timely 2020 update targets the problems we currently face.

“Lookin’ For A Leader 2020”

Leaders walk among us
and I hope they hear our call.
Maybe it’s a woman
or a black man after all.
Lookin’ for a leader
to bring our country home,
reunite the red white and blue
before it turns to stone.

Lookin’ for somebody
With the strength to take it on;
keep us safe together
and make this country strong.
Walkin’  among our people
There’s someone to lead us on;
lead a rainbow of colors
in a broken world gone wrong.

Yeah, we had Barack Obama
and we really need him now.
The man who stood behind him
has to take his place somehow.
America has a leader
building walls around our house.
He don’t know black lives matter
and we got to vote him out.

We got our election,
but corruption has a chance
We got to have a big win
to regain confidence.
America is beautiful
but she has an ugly side.
We’re lookin’ for a leader
in this country far and wide.

Just like his big new fence,

this president’s goin’ down.
America’s movin’ forward.
You can feel it in every town.
Scared of his own shadow,
building walls around our house,
he’s hidin’ in his bunker;
something else to lie about.

We don’t need a leader

building walls around our house
who don’t know black lives matter
and it’s time to vote him out!
We’re lookin’ for a leader
with The Great Spirit on his side;
lookin’ for a leader
in this country far and wide.
Lookin’ for a leader
with The Great Spirit on his side.
