Hamilton, ON’s Alt Roots Rockers BRYCE CLIFFORD & BROTHER SUPERIOR Face Their “Worst Enemy” in NEW Single

0

Hamilton, ON’s alt-rock roots artists Bryce Clifford & Brother Superior come face to face with their “Worst Enemy” — the latest single off their forthcoming release, Rebounder.

With added influences of bluegrass, honky tonk, post-punk and old school soul woven in, the band’s newly minted third album sews in a bow the Hamilton, Ontario-based frontman’s storied 10-year sojourn to Austin, Texas and back — complete with love gained and lost.

“The story behind this album is a difficult one to talk about,” Clifford laments. “Not because of the hard feelings behind the breakup, but for the regrettably trite scenario…

“I seethe at the idea of being lumped in with lame ‘singer/songwriter seclusion’ stories,” he continues, half-groaning, half-laughing. “In all seriousness, though, I hope it isn’t filed under ‘pain makes art,’ but something more like ‘art as survival.’

“‘Worst Enemy’ was the first song I wrote for the album, and two things were going on: I was decimated by the betrayal of my girlfriend, and feeling as though the bottom had dropped out. I was also excited about giving myself the space to build a new collection of songs from scratch, so I packed up and drove north to Canada with no plan except to mine the circumstances for a collection of songs.”

Armed with experience, the 2,500-odd kilometre drive confirmed to Clifford two things: he had a record and he couldn’t let it get away. “Worst Enemy,” in particular, came to the songwriter at some point on the 1-70 E through Kansas.

“I was afraid the adrenaline would wear off, so I worked on those songs nonstop for the first several weeks. Like a common cold, I knew I’d get better so I had to chase the ideas while I was still on the bad side of symptoms.

“I set up recording gear in an unused RV my family had been storing on some empty farmland near London, Ontario. It was cold and this was self-imposed isolation before that was a thing, pre-pandemic; I was completely surrounded by snow-covered cornfields, and I shut off all social media for months, but it was perfect for silence and experimentation. It was very freeing to allow myself to be off the grid and off the hamster wheel.

“Honestly, it felt like my compass was pointing closer to the right direction.

“Based on the overwhelming feelings I had, and a racing mind, that goal was an antidote to a heart in free fall,” he continues. “This was neuron-firing creativity that had a way of absorbing the letdown, almost like a built-in defence mechanism.

“I relied on that.

“The beauty of going to such a small town was there was absolutely nothing going on, and everyone I’d known from there had moved on,” he says, recalling the time in Ingersoll. “In Austin, there had been too much going on and I’d been distracted for years. It was like a velvet coffin; at some point you realize you can have too good of a time playing the same places for the same people that you don’t notice you’re getting nowhere. By going to such a desolate spot, I tricked myself into doing the work.

“I needed to be pushed out of my comfortable rut.”

Before this year’s release, it had been ten years since Bryce Clifford & Brother Superior’s debut LP, Hail Tapes (2010), and another four since the sophomore EP, Whatever Coach (2016). The band has toured, performed and been featured extensively, including at or on NXNE, MTV, CBS, The Syfy Channel, Bravo Canada, The CW, and in the award-winning film, Here We Are.

For its part, Rebounder lands as a 12-track tome to a relationship that was, wasn’t and could be again. Its early pre-release success includes features at Austin’s DIY Conference, Toronto’s Indie Week and filming at YouTube’s headquarters; Bryce Clifford & Brother Superior are currently CD Baby Canada’s Artist of the Month for August.

“I think the songs do a good job of reflecting the mood swings in a person when the bottom drops out,” Clifford says of the release. “It documents a sort of manic confusion, and tangents from disbelief, to loss, to a ‘rock and roll’ defiance.

“The songs don’t wallow too deep for too long, either,” he adds. “They reach back in time for the bright moments, all with a narrator struggling to get the words right.

“Heartbreak is universal, and everyone gets their turn. I just feel lucky to have had a place to put it.”

“Worst Enemy” is available now.

Rebounder is available Autumn 2020.

Good Humor and The RZA Collaborate on a New Ice Cream Truck Jingle for a New Era

0

We know ice cream trucks are one of the joys of summer, but did you know that the origins of a familiar ice cream truck tune are actually not joyful at all? ‘Turkey in the Straw’ is a 200-year-old song with surprisingly racist roots — it first became popular in minstrel shows and can still be heard in ice cream trucks today.

Good Humor learned about this melody’s history and decided to take action. The ice cream maker has teamed up with legendary music producer and founder of the Wu-Tang Clan, The RZA, to create a new ice cream truck jingle for a new era, available to ice cream trucks nationwide starting this month.

While Good Humor did not create ‘Turkey in the Straw’ or other ice cream truck jingles, the brand is using its influence to acknowledge the song’s history, educate drivers and fans, and help the ice cream truck industry remove it from use.

“Good Humor invented the ice cream truck and is the maker of some of today’s most iconic ice cream truck treats. And while we have not owned ice cream trucks since 1976, we wanted to be part of the solution and offer ice cream truck drivers a jingle that can bring joy to every community,” said Russel Lilly, Senior Director, U.S. Ice Cream at Unilever. “So, to create a new jingle, we knew we had to team up with the mastermind behind some of the most memorable melodies of our time.”

To create an original jingle, The RZA drew inspiration from his own childhood memories of chasing after the ice cream truck in his neighborhood. The track borrows from traditional ice cream truck music and adds jazz and hip-hop elements. Expect trap drumbeats, some old-school bells that reference Good Humor’s original ice cream trucks, and a distinct RZA hook that you will not be able to get out of your head.

“I remember the days when I would hear that iconic ice cream truck jingle outside, and I would drop what I was doing to chase it down for a treat. When I learned about that song’s problematic history this summer, I knew I had to get involved and do something about it,” said RZA. “I’m excited to share this new jingle with a new era of ice cream truck fans and continue to spread that joy with Good Humor.”

The new jingle is available to ice cream truck drivers nationwide starting this month on GoodHumor.com and through Nichols Electronics, the family-owned, Minneapolis-based manufacturer of ice cream truck music boxes. Good Humor will also be providing resources to help educate drivers about ‘Turkey in the Straw’s’ history and instructions for how to replace it in their trucks.

Good Humor is proud to be part of Unilever and its family of brands who have pledged more than $8 million in 2020 to organizations and activists working for social justice and racial equality. As part of Unilever:

  • We will continue to increase our work with and investment in diverse suppliers
  • We continue to work to ensure the diversity of our workforce fully reflects the communities we serve
  • We uphold a zero-tolerance policy on intolerance – both among Unilever employees and the suppliers, customers and partners that work with us
  • We will add our voice and influence to advocate for safe and fair access to voting this November

Frank Zappa’s Epic 1981 Halloween Concert Immortalized With King-size Six-Disc Halloween 81 Costume Box Set

0

By 1981, Frank Zappa’s Halloween shows in New York were already legendary – a rock and roll bacchanalia of jaw-dropping musicianship, costume-clad revelry, spontaneous theatrical hijinks and of course a heavy dose of Zappa’s signature virtuosic guitar workouts. Eagerly anticipated every year, fans never knew exactly what was in store but knew it would be of epic proportions and one-of-a-kind experience that only Zappa and his skilled group of musicians could provide. When Zappa returned to The Palladium in NYC in 1981 for a five-show four-night run from October 29 to November 1, the nearly-annual tradition was even more anticipated than usual as the 1980 concerts were cut short due to Zappa falling ill. Curiously there was no fall tour the previous year and thus no Halloween shows.

Perhaps because of this, Zappa arrived at the 3,000 capacity Palladium raring to play, armed with a cracking new band, a just-released double album and a film crew in tow. In addition to recording all shows with a professional mobile rig and filming the Halloween night festivities for future releases, the midnight concert was to be the first live simulcast in cable history, broadcasting via satellite over the radio and on a recently launched music channel called MTV. The early 8 pm show was captured on video by Zappa’s crew and the footage of the two shows ended up being utilized for a number of different video projects over the years, most notably the home video releases, The Dub Room Special (1983) and The Torture Never Stops (1982). While some of the audio from these concerts has been released on CD over the years including as part of the You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore live series, The Dub Room Special soundtrack and One Shot Dealaudio from the complete shows has never been released in its entirety…until now.

For the first-time ever, Zappa’s historic October 31 Halloween night concerts and the closing November 1 show recorded live at The Palladium in 1981 will be released as a gigantic six-disc box set featuring 78 unreleased live tracks totaling more than seven hours of live performances from three complete concerts. Available October 2 via Zappa Records/UMe, the expansive release is the next in the acclaimed costume box set series which began with the Halloween 77 box set in 2017 to chronicle these iconic concerts and celebrate Zappa’s love of Halloween. The specially-designed costume box will include a Count Frankula mask along with a red and black cape so fans can dress like vampire Frank Zappa for Halloween or display alongside their FRANKenZAPPA mask and gloves from last year’s Halloween 73 box or the retro mask and costume of the maestro himself from the inaugural release. Fully authorized by the Zappa Trust and produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, the concerts have been newly mixed from the original Ampex 456 2-inch 24-track analog tape masters by Craig Parker Adams in 2020. This king-size offering also includes a 40-page booklet with rare photos from the event by John Livzey (Livzey.com) and new liner notes by touring band member Robert Martin, Vaultmeister Joe Travers and super fan-in-attendance Gary Titone who pens a remembrance of the shows. In addition, a 1CD version titled Halloween 81: Highlights From The Palladium, New York City will also be released, featuring performances from all three shows along with an exclusive track, “Strictly Genteel,” from the November 1 show not included on the box set. It will be packaged in a jewel case with liners by Travers. Pre-order is available for both albums now and all pre-orders of the box will receive an instant grat of the previously unreleased track, “I’m The Slime,” from the November 1 show.

Zappa returned to The Palladium boasting a brand new band with three new players – Scott Thunes on bass, Chad Wackerman on drums and Robert Martin on keyboards – joining veteran members Ray White on guitar, Ed Mann on percussion and Tommy Mars on keys along with that “Little Italian Virtuoso” Steve Vai, now on his second tour as a band member. While the group had only been on the road for a month, by the time the Halloween shows took place they were in lockstep when they hit the stage and delivered sensational performances night after night. As Travers writes in the insightful liners, “although there may not have been as much audience interaction and festivities as in the past, the performances lived up to the hype. There were hardly any stops in the action, song after song being presented like rapid fire, all the while drenched in Halloween spirit.”

From the audience’s exalted roar and opening salvo of “Chunga’s Revenge” from the early 8 pm Halloween show that kicks off disc 1 to the closing notes of “The Torture Never Stops” on disc 6 that concluded the November 1 show, that spirit and enthusiasm is palpable throughout the more than seven hours of performances which features Zappa leading his band through three wildly eclectic concerts, handling vocals for many of the songs. Having recently released his new album You Are What You Is in September of that year, the setlist is a showcase of many of the songs from that double LP such as the title track, “Teen-Age Wind,” “Goblin Girl,” “Doreen,” “I’m A Beautiful Guy,” “Mudd Club,” “Dumb All Over,” “Suicide Chump,” and others, alongside Zappa classics like “Black Napkins,” “Strictly Genteel,” “Dancin’ Fool,” “Bobby Brown Goes Down,” and “King Kong.” Zappa and Vai’s mind-altering guitar prowess is on full display throughout the shows and spotlighted here with extensive guitar workouts on “The Black Page #2,” “Easy Meat” and “Stevie’s Spanking.” Other highlights include the band’s feverish take on the Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post” and standout tracks “Drowning Witch” and “Sinister Footwear II.”

Although the final concert ends with Zappa saying, “see you next year,” unbeknownst to him this would actually be both the last Halloween show at The Palladium and the last time he’d ever play the classic venue. It would also end up being the penultimate Halloween show as the final one would take place in 1984 at the Felt Forum where the NYC tradition began in the ‘70s. “Halloween 1981 became one of Zappa’s most popular of all the Halloween residencies in New York City,” Travers writes. “The image of Frank in his hot magenta jumpsuit has gone on to become an iconic one in the world of rock and roll.”

Now nearly forty years later, Zappa’s legendary Halloween 81 concerts have been immortalized for all to experience or to revisit for the lucky ones that got to witness these transcendent nights of musical history. Robert Martin, who manned the keyboards at these shows, offers in the liner notes, “All in all, the elements of sonic exploration and social commentary that run through all of Frank’s albums and tours are especially well represented in this release, perhaps amplified by the surreal aspect of Halloween and the openness of the crowd to participate even more fully in the ‘anything can happen’ experimental atmosphere that Frank lived in and personified.”

Shania Twain’s The Woman In Me: Diamond Edition To Be Released October 2

0

International icon Shania Twain, the best-selling female country artist of all-time in the US, announced the 25th anniversary of her GRAMMY-winning breakthrough album with The Woman in Me: Diamond Edition, this morning on Good Morning America during their “Summer Concert Series.” Watch the performance HERE.

Available October 2, via Mercury Nashville/UMG Recordings, Inc., the Diamond Edition contains a newly remastered version of the genre-busting, multi-platinum album.  The Diamond Edition also includes previously unreleased tracks, live recordings, and mixes that trace the evolution of an album that changed the way country music sounded. The Woman in Me: Diamond Edition will be available in two- and three-CD configurations, with the remastered album available in LP and Limited-Edition color variant LP versions, as well.

The three-CD box set contains 16 previously unreleased tracks, including five live performances recorded in December 2019 during Twain’s residency at Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas, and an entire “Shania Vocal Mix” containing early takes of 11 songs from nearly a year before the album’s release. In addition to the five Las Vegas performances, the “Live & Remixed” disc, available on both the two- and three-CD editions, features two tracks recorded in September 1998 at Dallas’ Reunion Arena for the Shania: Live DVD that also was carried on DirecTV; and nine remixes that show how Twain and producer, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, continued to adapt her sound as she began to cross into pop and international markets — and even into dance clubs.

Eight of the 12 songs from The Woman in Me appeared on Billboard‘s country singles chart, with four — “Any Man of Mine,” “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!” “You Win My Love” and “No One Needs to Know” — reaching No. 1. “Any Man of Mine” also gave Twain her first Top 40 crossover hit. The Woman in Me spent 29 weeks atop the country albums chart and was 1995’s best-selling country album. It won a GRAMMY for Best Country Album in 1996 and later was ranked No. 8 on CMT’s list of 40 Greatest Country Albums.

The Woman in Me: Diamond Edition is accompanied by a 48-page booklet containing liner notes from Twain, a 3,000-word essay written by renowned pop-culture journalist Eve Barlow, and photographs from John Derek, Albert Sanchez, Mark Tucker, Bo Derek, and Alexander E. Harbaugh.

The Woman in Me, Twain’s second album, debuted at No. 65 on the Billboard country chart in February 1995, entering the Billboard 200 three weeks later at 197. The album continued to climb steadily, finally hitting No. 1 on the country chart in July, the same week “Any Man of Mine” became Twain’s first chart-topping country single. By that point, the album was already gold; by the end of 1995, it had sold 4 million copies, making it the year’s top-selling country album. In 1996, it passed Patsy Cline’s Greatest Hits to become the best-selling album by a female country artist (a title Twain’s 1997 follow-up, Come on Over, would claim in 1999). The Woman in Me reached Diamond status for shipments of 10 million copies in 1997, then 12 million in 2000. It has sold an estimated 20 million copies worldwide.

Twain has sold 48 million albums in the US, making her the sixth best-selling female artist in the country, and 100 million albums worldwide. She is the only female artist to have three consecutive albums certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association for shipments of 10 million units.

James Bay Teams Up With Apple Music To Release ‘At Home With James Bay Session’

0

Today James Bay announces his collaboration with Apple Music as part of their latest installment of the Apple Music At Home Session series. For the special edition of the series James covers “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis and “Trouble” by Coldplay.

On the collaboration Bay said: “It’s funny, I didn’t really like Oasis or Coldplay as a kid. I picked up a guitar at 11 years old and wanted to be The Rolling Stones, Clapton, Hendrix. But as I got deeper and deeper into songwriting and studying great songs, I came to love Oasis, Coldplay and more great modern songwriters. I totally fell in love with the music. So much so that I now sit and play their songs to myself on guitar, that’s why I chose them, they’re just so timeless and brilliant.”

The session is just one of many recent achievements for Bay as he has taken the world by storm with his current single  “Chew On My Heart.”Performing on The Today ShowMahogany Sessions, and recently created his own 45 minute 10-song solo set on YouTube in support of #SaveOurVenues– the UK crowd fundraiser started to protect UK grassroots music venues at risk for permanent closure dur to COVID-19.

Also announcing today Bay will be performing “Chew On My Heart” for the song’s late night US tv debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday, August 25th! Be sure to tune in for what will be a memorable performance!

The track has continued to climb as it has entered the Top 30 at Triple A & Hot AC radio, hit over 10 million global streams and Rolling Stone recently praised it with: “If “Chew On My Heart” is any indication of what his forthcoming album is going to sound like, it seems like the musician is taking his sound in a more positive direction.”

In addition, today Bay announced he has been selected by Music Venue Trust (MVT) as one of their seven new artist patrons. MVT represent hundreds of grassroots music venues throughout the UK and have created patrons in four major categories: Artist, Broadcasting, Industry and Politics. During the current COVID-19 pandemic MVT patrons have played a vital role in raising awareness and funds through high profile campaigns such as #saveourvenues, which to date have raised over £2.5m for grassroots music venues in crisis. Bay joins the already impressive roster of MVT artist patrons who include Sir Paul Mcartney, Bill Bragg, Frank Turner, KT Tunstall and Elbow among many others.

On joining the MVT Bay said: “It’s vital that we don’t lose any music venues. They are so important to every artist’s growth, learning how to really turn a live show from a good night to a great one.”
