Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds And Garbage To Embark On Co-Headline North American Tour This Summer

Today, Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have announced a co-headlining tour of North America for this summer. The tour, produced by Live Nation, features special guest Metric and will kick off in Auburn, Washington on June 2nd.

This is the first time Noel and his High Flying Birds ave hit the road in North America since 2019, when they made stops across the USA and Canada with the Smashing Pumpkins. The first tour date in Washington State coincides with the release day for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ much anticipated 4th album Council Skies.

2021 saw Garbage on an extensive tour following the reease of their most recent album, No Gods No Masters; of the live shows, Consequence raved, “Once the curtain dropped, Garbage whipped the fans in the pit to a frenzy…clad in pink ad rocking a mic stand adorned with a matching feathered boa, Manson revealed a rock star stage presence that has refined over the past two decades. At the Greek, Garbage proved they are going 20 years strong, and their legacy demands closer observation.”

Garbage and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will besupported by Metric, who released their most recent album Formentera last year. It was their most commercially successful release in a decade and was accompanied by a sold-out tour spanning the US, Canada, the UK and Europe.

Ottawa-Based Throat Singer Qattuu Releases Debut Solo Album

World-class throat singer and musician, Qattuu, has released her debut solo album, Midnight Sun. The album was released on February 10, 2023.

Qattuu, whose name is pronounced “KAT-suu”, is a singer, throat singer, songwriter, performing artist, and experimental Indigenous expressionist. She currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario and has roots in Pangnirtung, Nunavut.

“After hearing my album, what I would love for people to leave with are feelings and thoughts that were never there before,” said Qattuu. “This is heart, soul, and mind provoking music.”

Midnight Sun was produced by Grammy-, Juno-, and Polaris Prize-winning music producer Chris Birkett, whose previous work includes Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinéad O’Connor, and Sting. Birkett also co-wrote a number of songs on the album. Midnight Sun was largely recorded at his studio in Toronto, Ontario.

The album’s creative process was additionally guided by Juno-nominated Inuk artist, Looee Arreak, whose 1998-released song “Don’t Give Up” was covered by Qattuu on Midnight Sun. Arreak, along with fellow Inuk artist Joey Nowyuk, provided some Inuktitut lyrics on the album.

Midnight Sun was released on the Nunavut-based record label, Hitmakerz. Its creation was made possible with support from Canada Council for the Arts and Ontario Arts Council.

“Everything about this album is my heart and an incredible amount of work was put into it from many people,” said Qattuu. “My sauniapikuluuk is in there, my panik, I wrote a song for my dad, I covered Looee’s song…it’s a community album!”

Qattuu’s title choice draws inspiration from a natural Arctic phenomenon. “Midnight sun” is when the sun continues shining throughout the night in the summer months.

“My producer and I went through trying different names from the song list, and this one fit the most. It’s very poetic and interesting,” said Qattuu.

Midnight Sun’s sound varies, creating a captivating contrast between Qattuu’s sweet singing voice and rhythmically driving throat singing. She fuses contemporary musical elements with Inuit tradition.

The album has eight tracks in total: Midnight Sun, Ataataga, Sauniapikuluuk, Panikuluuk, Kitturiaq, The Ones Forgotten, Don’t Give Up, and The Day I Get Married.

Qattuu has long been part of the Nunavut and Ottawa music scenes. Her passion began at the age of 6, after her mother showed her a cassette tape of an Inuk singer performing throat singing.

Largely self-taught, Qattuu honed her craft over many years. As a child, she was motivated to succeed, and remembers crying from the physical pain in her throat as she learned the technique. Despite this, she never regretted a single moment, as she was determined to learn the ancient art of katajjaq.

Qattuu is a featured artist on many songs by fellow Nunavut artists, such as Joey Nowyuk and Angela Amarualik. Qattuu was also asked to join the Juno-nominated group,  Silla and Rise, from 2020-2022. She co-wrote their album Silarjuaq in 2021. Now Qattuu is making her own path.

“I’ve always been collaborating with other artists and so I was like ‘why limit myself?’” said Qattuu. “This [album] is one of the first pieces as ‘Qattuu’ going forward, so it’s very important to me.”

As a soloist, Qattuu has performed internationally many times, and represented Inuit culture on stages around the world, including in France, Belgium, and the Philippines.

For many years, Qattuu has also delivered cultural workshops and helped others learn about Inuit throat singing. She is considered by many to be an experienced throat singer and leading performer.

U2 dropped the ultimate sneak peek – to a mass global audience – today with a Super Bowl commercial that has fans wondering if the band is perhaps announcing inter-planetary travel or an out-of-this-world experience. The ad HERE gives a glimpse into their next ambitious project – titled ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere’ – which will see the world’s biggest rock band launch the world’s most exciting all-new state-of-the-art venue, MSG Sphere at The Venetian, in Las Vegas this Fall. This special run of shows marks the band’s first live outing in four years, following the massive success of their acclaimed Joshua Tree 30th anniversary stadium tour which was seen by over 3.2 million fans worldwide and their 2018 eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE indoor tour which played to a combined audience of 1 million across Europe and North America.

The announcement comes with confirmation that Larry Mullen Jr. will take time out to undergo and recuperate from surgery in 2023. These Las Vegas shows will see Larry and the band welcome drummer Bram van den Berg who will be sitting in to join Bono, The Edge and Adam Clayton onstage at MSG Sphere.

In addition to the film screening, “TRACE (Tracing Rare African Canadian Extraordinaire)”, the new single from Sonia Aimy, was written and recorded as the theme song for the documentary and celebratory project of the same name. The TRACE project aims to recognize the work and efforts of seven Black Canadians in diverse sectors i.e., business, entrepreneur, academic, arts and culture, history, and philanthropy. The seven TRACE honourees include Adonis Huggins, Charlene Rokhaya-Jaye, Naila Keleta-Mae, Renee Rankine, Rosemary Sadlier, Rustum Southwell, and Tunde Dawodu.

The inspiration for the song comes from the TRACE project itself–the desire to discover true role models who do a lot for their community but do not boast about their actions. The afrobeat genre at its core follows a similar principle; allow the instrumentals to speak to the narrative while the vocals are simply an added flourish. “It inspired me to focus on the musical arrangement that will balance the TRACE beautiful narratives,” says Sonia.

Kellylee Evans and Savannah Ré Announced As Grand Prize Recipients Of Annual Her Music Awards

The SOCAN Foundation, part of the SOCAN Group of companies, is thrilled to announce Kellylee Evans and Savannah Ré as the grand prize recipients of the third annual Her Music Awards, in partnership with Bandzoogle.

“This important initiative has previously supported trailblazing artists including Haviah Mighty, Leela Gilday, Nuela Charles, and Caveboy,” said Charlie Wall-Andrews, Executive Director of SOCAN Foundation. “We’re thrilled to add the incredible Savannah Ré and Kellylee Evans to this group as this year’s grand prize recipients. We are thankful for the support of Bandzoogle and community stakeholders that made the Her Music Awards possible, and have allowed us to celebrate in person this year!”

SOCAN CEO, Jenn Brown and past Her Music Award winner Haviah Mighty, announced the recipients at an intimate, in-person celebration hosted by previous award winner Nuela Charles in Toronto, ON on February 9, 2023. Grand prize recipients, Kellylee Evans and Savannah Ré, were both awarded a $5,000 cash prize and a one-year complimentary membership from the Songwriters Association of Canada (S.A.C.) and Société professionnelle des auteurs et des compositeurs du Québec (SPACQ).

“I was so surprised and honoured to hear that I had been chosen for this award alongside Savannah Ré,” said Kellylee Evans. “As my career shifts and changes with the years, my love for creating has not dampened. This recognition gives me the affirmation and the energy to keep going, despite the challenges along the way. I’m so thankful.”

“So happy an award like this even exists. Winning the Her Music Award is a significant achievement because it’s an award that empowers and recognizes female creators,” said Savannah Ré. “It highlights our talents and contributions to the music industry. It also helps to promote and support female artists in the industry, which can be especially important in an industry that has traditionally been dominated by men. This award will open doors for me and help me pave the way to reaching my goals in my career.”

Additionally, five Her Music Awards honourable mention distinctions were awarded to Haley Blais, Jorane, Moira & Claire, Tanika Charles and Zeina. Each of these recipients received a $1,000 cash prize.

The Her Music Awards is a program designed to celebrate and support female-identifying Canadian music creators on the verge of taking their creative careers to the next level. The Awards are administered by the SOCAN Foundation, with financial contributions made by SOCAN Foundation and Bandzoogle.

“We would like to congratulate Kellylee Evans and Savannah Ré for receiving Her Music Awards,” said Stacey Bedford, CEO Bandzoogle. “We couldn’t be happier to support this amazing initiative from the SOCAN Foundation, and we wish these incredible artists continued success in their careers.”

Applications were adjudicated on a number of factors, including artistic merit, career potential, and impact. The jury was composed of Cécile Doo-Kingué, Carole Facal, Kesi Smyth, Suzie Ungerleider, and jury committee chair Shakura S’Aida.

Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy Create A Musical “Canvas” With New Studio Album Out March 17, 2023

A blank canvas is full of possibility — much like the partnership of Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, whose new album Canvas comes out March 17, 2023. They are two of the world’s top Celtic fiddlers: she a renowned, award-winning solo artist from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; he from the legendary Leahy family of Ontario, an intergenerational musical act that toured the world. They were married in 2002, by which point their cumulative album sales topped one million. A power couple was born.

Canvas is only their third album together. They approached it not bound by easy patterns or habits, but as a blank canvas. “Creativity comes when there is space for it,” says MacMaster. “One thing Donnell and I were given in 2020 was the space and time to be creative, to think and focus and find what was inside of us. Like an empty canvas, our minds were clear, open for the music that was about to flow. There were no restrictions, rules, agendas, considerations. As Donnell often said, ‘Let the music decide.’ So, we indulged in full musical freedom, throwing patterns of the past aside. With a few challenges along the way, it was a delight from beginning to end.”

Rock, pop, Latin and classical influences come to the fore on the new material of mostly original melodies. Guests include Rhiannon Giddens (“Woman of the House”), Yo-Yo Ma (“So You Love”) Brian Finnegan (“Colour Theory”)—and, on “Choo Choo,” their 17-year-old daughter Mary Frances Leahy.

All seven of their children have become essential components of the live show, which sells out performing arts centres across North America—especially leading up to Christmas holidays. “Initially we were reluctant to let the kids perform. We worried the expectations might be too much,” Leahy says. “But then one night we put Mary Frances on stage. Soon after that Michael wanted to play. When I was a kid, I played the fiddle for my parents and my brothers and sisters. But you need to get into the game at some point. For me, the game was playing house parties. Our kids are practicing and when they come out on stage and do their little number, it’s their reward. They feel like a part of the tour and that provides amazing gratification.”

“I was so in awe of Donnell’s family,” says MacMaster, “of 11 siblings who could play and had a family band. And here I am now doing almost exactly the same thing. Well, kind of.”

Like any great marriage or artistic collaboration, MacMaster and Leahy have learned how to bring out the best in each other. “With Donnell, I had to listen more deeply to subtleties in his music so that I wouldn’t muscle over them,” MacMaster says. “I also had to try and roll with his rhythm. Having said that, I still play in my Cape Breton style. Only about 40 percent of our show is us playing together. The other 60 percent is arrangements where we each take turns or are playing alone.” “I think the thing I’m most proud of is Natalie,” says Leahy. “She’s a musical star but her commitment to her family and to me is a side nobody gets to see. She’s so giving. It’s never ‘no’ with her.”

Listening to Canvas, the average listener might not be able to discern the difference in their two styles — and it doesn’t matter, because either way you’re listening to two of the best fiddlers on the planet. MacMaster and Leahy are as dynamic working together as they were working apart, which is why they have fans like Shania Twain and the Chieftains, an audience that stretches from Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Sydney, Australia.

True-life stories in the entertainment world (or anywhere) don’t come more remarkable than that.
