Depeche Mode to release 18-disc ‘MODE’ box set

0

The impact of Depeche Mode’s music on their fans, and the musical landscape as a whole, is undeniable. By constantly evolving and pushing boundaries, while staying dedicated to their identity, Depeche Mode have maintained credibility with longtime followers, attracted new fans and continually inspired countless other musical artists. As the band continues this musical legacy, the MODE box set celebrates this history with an eye to what is still to come.

MODE is a comprehensive collection of the band’s work to date – comprised of all 14 studio albums plus additional non-album material — from 2017’s Spirit back to DM’s debut album Speak & Spell. In line with DM’s signature aesthetic, the numbered, limited-edition set is housed in an elegant and minimalist black cube, with each disc similarly enclosed in a black, heavyweight card wallet. The albums’ original covers have been re-interpreted in uniform black-on-black designs exclusive to this box set, and four additional bonus discs provide a chronological collection of non-album singles, b-sides and bonus tracks. Accompanying the audio content is a 228 page, gilt-edged book containing all of Depeche Mode’s lyrics, compiled together for the first time, highlighting their collective visceral power and impact.

Reflecting on the set’s content and design, the band commented, “With everything together in this all-black design it feels like a modern reflection of who we are and where we’ve come from. The set couldn’t be more Depeche Mode.”

Five of the Best Ozzy Osbourne Songs

0

Every once in awhile comes along a rock superstar that takes the genre of music as his own and become a living icon, and there aren’t many musicians past or present that can claim to have the influence the Ozzy Osbourne has had with metal.

Osbourne is still one of the most celebrated icons to have come out of Birmingham, and We Love Brum are constantly waxing lyrical about the superstar. But his rise back to the top of the music world after his firing from Black Sabbath in 1979 couldn’t have been possible without the support of his management, wife and of course, hit songs. But, which songs have stood the test of time and remain prominent to this day?

Hellraiser (1991)

One of the songs that saw Osbourne gain traction again on the rock scene was this song, which was written by Osbourne and Lemmy from Motorhead. Both recorded their own versions, and the debate over which was best continues to rumble on. But, for us, it was Ozzy’s. It was bound to be a classic once you learned about the rock talent behind the song.

I Don’t Know (1980)

Osbourne’s true musical genius was displayed on this song and stayed relevant throughout the entirety of his first solo album. His jaw-dropping neoclassical style was first introduced to the world with this record, and the depth in this song is astounding. The theme of Osbourne pleading his ignorance to the future of mankind adds a future element to this brilliant song.

Mr Crowley (1980)

One song that would get to the top of almost all Ozzy fans lists would be this song. It hooks you in from the very first couple of seconds, and when the scream of ‘Mister Crowley’ is brought in, you’re enticed. The song was inspired by Aleister Crowley, and while it may not be the quickest or heaviest, it is certainly one of the most powerful Osbourne songs. Randy Rhoads’ solo in this song was voted as one of the best of all-time, and that highlights just how strong this song is.

No More Tears (1991)

One of the best things that Ozzy has done throughout his career is working with top-class musicians and has offered others a chance to step up and become noticed. However, this song is one of his more ambitious songs, and the song bubbles away underneath a growing halo of clean synths and guitar lines. There are plenty of metal riffs in this, but it’s the lyrics that really capture the imagination. It is one of the most layered Osbourne songs and is one of his most beloved.

Crazy Train (1980)

The absolute undoubted classic Osbourne song is this one. The intro is unforgettable, and when Ozzy pitches his verses, the listener is onboard. The whole song is infectious and once it has ended you just want to play it over, and over again. It is a true classic in every sense of the phrase, and the references to the Cold War remain relevant even to this day.

Richard Marx Embarks On A New Chapter In Both Art And Life With New Album ‘Limitless,’ Out February 7

0

Today, Richard Marx announces his new album ‘Limitless,’ out February 7th 2020 on BMG. ‘Limitless’ is Richard’s first album of original songs in six years, as well as his first new release for BMG. Produced in part by Richard and featuring co-writes with Sara Bareilles, Richard’s son Lucas Marx and his wife Daisy Fuentes, ‘Limitless’ represents a new beginning for the celebrated singer-songwriter. While his last album ‘Beautiful Goodbye’ closed the book on one chapter of Richard’s life, ‘Limitless’ opens a new one. After falling back in love, remarrying and settling into a new home in LA, “I’ve never felt so intrinsically strong and optimistic about my future,” Richard says, and the bright, heartfelt pop of ‘Limitless’ reflects that feeling.

The announcement arrives as Richard’s latest single “Another One Down” spends its 6th week in the top 15 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Richard co-wrote “Another One Down” with his son Lucas, which he called a “joyful” experience.

Richard has also released a new song from ‘Limitless’ entitled “Let Go.” Co-written with Daisy Fuentes, and co-produced by Richard himself and Morgan Page (deadmau5), “Let Go” is a driving track about the freedom of new beginnings. “It reflects the way I feel about my life these days,” Richard says. Listen to “Let Go” here: https://richardmarx.lnk.to/LetGoPR

“I wasn’t really sure what making a new album meant for an artist like me,” Richard says of the creative process behind ‘Limitless.’ “All I knew was that I still write songs all the time and I realized I had a collection of songs I really liked. In my past, my only criteria was to write and record songs that pleased me, and hopefully other people would like them, too. So I returned to that ideology and dismissed any concerns of stylistic consistency and the next thing I knew, I had recorded a diverse album I really liked.”

Shortly after signing with BMG earlier this year, the label celebrated the 30th anniversary of his breakout album ‘Repeat Offender’ by releasing ‘Repeat Offender Revisited,’ a compilation of brand new live and acoustic versions of songs from the original album, including his hit song “Right Here Waiting.”

Richard Marx has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, won a GRAMMY, and remains the only male artist in history whose first seven singles reached the Top 5 on the Billboard charts. In addition to being a musician, Richard is a committed philanthropist. His charitable causes include the American Cancer Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities, and he supports Mercy For Animals, ASPCA, Humane Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Richard Marx will tour through the end of 2019 and into 2020 with intimate performances at theaters from coast to coast including stops in San Francisco, Milwaukee, Detroit and more. Full tour routing below.

The Glorious Sons Announce Their Massive 2020 “A War On Everything” North American Headlining Tour

0

Just two days after their massive sold-out hometown stadium show at Kingston’s Richardson Memorial Stadium, JUNO Award-winning rockers The Glorious Sons have announced their 2020 “A War On Everything” North American headlining tour produced by Concerts West/AEG Presents. Kicking off in Pennsylvania on January 16, the sweeping 40+ date tour will hit iconic venues across major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada including stops in New York, Los Angeles, Toronto and Vancouver before wrapping in Montreal on April 11. Joining the tour as special guests are Des Rocs (U.S. dates) and Black Pistol Fire (Canadian dates). The tour announcement follows the celebrated release of the band’s brazen and brutally honest new album A War On Everything (9/13 via Black Box/BMG), and marks the group’s highly-anticipated return to Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, where they wrapped the critically acclaimed larger than life “S.O.S.” tour last November.

Ticket pre-sales for the 2020 “A War On Everything” tour begin today at 1:00 p.m. local time. Tickets go on sale to the public beginning September 27 at 10:00 a.m. local time.

A daring 14-track collection of stadium-ready, “dirty, sweaty rock” (Alternative Press), rife with devastating moments of vulnerability and searing insight into universal truths about anxiety, sadness and isolation in the 21st century, A War On Everything was produced by Frederik Thaae (Kate Nash, Atlas Genius), and recorded at North of Princess studios in the group’s hometown of Kingston, ON. Billboard hailed the record’s “turbulent guitar licks,” saying, “maybe the self-aware band thinks [rock] is dying, but they might just be resurrecting it.” Stuart Berman for Apple Music said, “‘A War on Everything’ heightens the tension between entertainment and inner torment at the heart of The Glorious Sons’ sound.”

The record marks the start of a new chapter for a band who earlier this year landed their first Billboard #1 with “S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)”, which held the #1 spot at Active Rock in Canada for 10 consecutive weeks (4 at US Active Rock), spent a record setting 64 weeks on the Canadian Rock Radio Charts while earning CRIA GOLD certification, and is still one of the most spun tracks of 2019 at Rock Radio in North America, firmly planting The Glorious Sons in uncharted territory.

On September 21, The Glorious Sons played to a raucous hometown crowd to commemorate the release of A War On Everything, taking over Kingston’s Richardson Memorial Stadium for a 2.5 hour headline set for the over 14,000 fans in attendance. From headlining clubs to arenas and festival dates, 2019 saw the award-winning band play massive shows with The Rolling Stones and Twenty-One Pilots and tour across the U.S. with The Struts.

They band will tour throughout Europe this fall with Welshly Arms before kicking off their “A War On Everything” North American headline tour in January.

Judy Collins Is Seeking Warmth In Winter With Jonas Fjeld And Chatham County Line In “Winter Stories” Out November 29

0

On November 29, iconic singer, songwriter, author and activist Judy Collins will release Winter Stories, a collection of songs that capture the sounds and feeling of the winter season featuring Norwegian folk artist Jonas Fjeld and Americana band Chatham County Line. Continuing an incredibly prolific period, Winter Stories will mark Judy’s fourth new album in the past four years. Judy, Jonas and Chatham County Line have also announced an eight-night run of shows at Joe’s Pub in NYC from November 18-27.

Winter Stories is a collection of originals, new collaborations and classics including Collins evergreens “Mountain Girl,” a re-recording of Jonas’s poignant “Angels In The Snow,” and a rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “The River.” “The Blizzard” was originally written as a 7-minute opus, but later truncated for the album on which it appeared. On Winter Stories, fans can finally hear it recorded in its full majesty. The artists also cherry-picked songs they’ve longed to record throughout the years, including Jimmy Webb’s “The Highwaymen,” which Collins has performed live with Stephen Stills, and Stan Rodger’s “North West Passage.” For the sessions, Jonas contributed the newly-penned “Frozen North,” and the stunning title track which features the masterful vocal interlace of Collins and Fjeld.

Jonas Fjeld is a beloved Norwegian artist, known internationally for his trio Danko/Fjeld/Andersen, featuring The Band’s Rick Danko. Chatham County Line has been a staple of the North Carolina music scene for nearly two decades.

Winter Stories came together in February 2019, when Collins, Fjeld, and Chatham County Line headed to Echo Mountain Studios—a former stately church—in Asheville, North Carolina. Prior to this, the three artists had never officially worked together. They had three days of rehearsal and pre-production in which they picked the album’s core songs from a list of 20 potential seasonally-themed tunes.

Reflecting on the sessions, Collins says: “I was very honored to work with this all-star group—there was definitely a lot of love and admiration between everyone, and we had such a great time together.” She adds, “I knew Jonas and Chatham County Line would be a great fit with me. The language of music overarches everything, including geography. When we came together in the studio, we found we could speak to each other in a way that was compatible and nuanced.”

In the past four years, Collins has released three albums and a tremendous amount of accolades. 2016’s Silver Skies Blue, a duets record with Ari Hest, was nominated for a GRAMMY Award, and led to a performance at the GRAMMY Premiere Ceremony. In 2017, she released Everybody Knows, her first album with Stephen Stills celebrating an important decades-long friendship that led to a year of touring, a profile on CBS Sunday Morning and more.

DJ Shadow’s Double Album Our Pathetic Age Out November 15 On Mass Appeal

0

DJ Shadow has announced an ambitious double album – Our Pathetic Age – out November 15 on Mass Appeal. Our Pathetic Age is the result of an intensely creative period that found the hip-hop and electronic innovator delving further into original composition and experimentation. The first half of Our Pathetic Age features 11 new instrumental works that balance some of Shadow’s most menacing sounds with beams of hope, including his first fully composed orchestral piece.

The second half of Our Pathetic Age is a full album of vocal collaborations, ranging from Run The Jewels, Nas and Dave East to Samuel T. Herring, Paul Banks and Wiki, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon. Shadow notably reunites with his early Solesides collaborators Lateef The Truthseeker and Gift of Gab (Blackalicious). It also features St. Louis MCs Rockwell Knuckles and Tef Poe, fellow Bay Area musicians Fantastic Negrito and Jumbo is Dr.ama, and Brooklyn MC Stro. Full track list with collaborators is below.

“More than anything, I try to get a sense of the mood of society as a whole. The subtle signals that humans send each other, the way people behave, their frustrations and ebbs and flows. In my part of the world, people are scared. There’s rampant homelessness, and a real fear of falling into generational poverty. People are addicted to, and addled by distraction; they’re angry and confused, and disaffected by their own governmental institutions. There’s songs that are inspired by this energy and seek to harness it, to make sense of it. In some cases, there’s attempts to salve the wound; in others, the songs merely observe but don’t offer solutions. Despite the title, it’s a hopeful, vibrant album…there is always light in darkness. I want it to reflect the times we live in, a signpost in the ground to mark the era…Our Pathetic Age,” says DJ Shadow.

In July, DJ Shadow unveiled his first new music in two years – “Rocket Fuel,” featuring De La Soul, which is included on the album and also featured on the Madden 20 soundtrack.

The album was produced by DJ Shadow, and the album art was created by Paul Insect, who also designed Shadow’s The Mountain Will Fall and Outsider covers.

DJ Shadow’s The Mountain Will Fall (released in 2016 on Mass Appeal) was widely celebrated and led to a performance of “Nobody Speak” with Run The Jewels on the Tonight Show, his first #1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart, and nearly 100 dates of international touring that included Coachella and Pitchfork Paris. “Nobody Speak,” deemed “brassy and bruising” by Rolling Stone, was featured in multiple films and commercials, and was the most played hip-hop song on alternative radio in 2018.

Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer Little Steven Opens Personal Musical Vault With “RockNRoll Rebel” Box Set

0

Little Steven has opened the doors on his personal archive of recordings to present an in-depth look at his solo career with a brand new boxed set. RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work (Wicked Cool/UMe) collects the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s solo work from 1973-1999 – including Artists United Against Apartheid’s landmark 1985 LP, Sun City – together with 51 bonus tracks spanning previously unreleased demos, B-sides, rehearsals, outtakes, classic concert performances, and a number of never-before-heard Steven Van Zandt compositions. Little Steven’s RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work will be available exclusively via the online store uDiscover Music beginning Friday, December 6.

“It’s been a blast going through the archives and finding all these hidden gems,” says Van Zandt. “In addition to demos in various stages of completion, there are entire songs I’d completely forgotten about, and we found some really early things pre-Jukes like Southside Johnny and the Kid (the kid being me!). I’m excited to have my stuff back on vinyl for the first time in decades!”

Limited to just 1,000 copies, the bespoke slipcase multi-format boxed set includes remastered editions of five long-out-of-print classic albums – Men Without Women (1982), Voice Of America (1983), Sun City (1985), Freedom – No Compromise (1987), Revolution (1989) and the vinyl debut of Born Again Savage (1999) – across seven-colored vinyl LPs alongside four CDs of rarities and bonus tracks. This also marks the first time Revolution will be released on vinyl in the U.S., having previously only been released in Europe. The set includes liner notes about each of the 51 bonus tracks.

Digital Deluxe Editions of all six albums, complete with corresponding bonus tracks, will be available for download in the weeks leading up to the boxed set’s official release kicking off today with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul’s 1982 debut album, Men Without Women, joined by 10 exclusive bonus tracks available now. Both RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work and the Digital Deluxe Edition of Men Without Women include long-lost tracks from what Van Zandt calls the “soundtrack to an unmade film,” including previously unreleased alternate versions of album favorites, “Angel Eyes,” “Forever” and “Until The Good Is Gone.” In conjunction with RockNRoll Rebel, a limited edition standalone 144-page, 12″ x 12″ companion book will be released featuring Van Zandt’s in-depth liner notes and memories and stories about the making of each album, lyrics to every song and hundreds of never-before-seen photos. It will be available for preorder soon.

Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul made their spectacular debut with 1982’s Men Without Women, highlighted by a pair of rock radio favorites in the opening “Lyin’ In A Bed Of Fire” and “Forever,” the latter of which spent nine weeks on Billboard‘s “Hot 100” while also receiving heavy rotation at the newly launched MTV. Van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul celebrated Men Without Women with sold out live dates including a legendary performance at NYC’s famed Peppermint Lounge that saw electrifying renditions of the album’s “Save Me” and “This Time It’s For Real” (written by Van Zandt and made famous by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes), both included on RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work.

RockNRoll Rebel – The Early Work – which arrives hot on the heels of Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul’s acclaimed latest album, Summer of Sorcery (Wicked Cool/UMe) – features appearances from an assortment of friends, collaborators, and special guests, including Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny, Rubén Blades, Miles Davis, Gary U.S. Bonds, Dino Danelli, and members of both the E Street Band and the Asbury Jukes.

To coincide with the release of RockNRoll RebelVan Zandt will be making select videos from his early career available on his official YouTube channel for the first time as well as offering up a ton of other visuals from the era. Fans can subscribe to the channel to be notified when videos are posted: https://www.youtube.com/user/LittleStevenVEVO

Following two years of nearly constant touring, totaling more than 150 shows across North AmericaEurope, and Australia, Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul will close the year with two triumphant final shows at the Chevalier Theatre in Boston on November 2nd followed by a homecoming performance at New York’s Beacon Theatre on November 6th.

Vishtèn, Alan Doyle, Meghan Patrick, Scott Helman and more announced for 21st season of CP Holiday Train

0

Canadian Pacific (CP) is proud to announce the performer lineup and schedule for the 2019 CP Holiday Train program. Entering its 21st year, the CP Holiday Train uses music and community spirit to raise money and generate healthy food donations for food banks in communities along CP’s network. Since 1999, the program has helped raise C$15.8 million and collect 4.5 million pounds of food.

“The CP Holiday Train is a program that our 13,000-strong CP family has immense pride in bringing to communities every year,” said Keith Creel, CP President and CEO. “Access to nutritious food is a basic necessity, and food bank usage is on the rise across North America. The CP Holiday Train program is our way to help in the fight against hunger by growing awareness of this issue and providing a fun and engaging way for the public to show their support.”

Beginning in Montreal on Nov. 25 and 26, two trains make their festive journeys, travelling through the U.S. and Canada, respectively. Once again, the CP Holiday Train features a star-studded lineup of country, R&B and pop musicians.

Acadian folk-music group Vishtèn will perform at all stops in Quebec, the starting point for both trains.

After kicking off the program in Quebec, Alan Doyle and Beautiful Band will travel along CP’s mainline to perform in communities in New York and southern Ontario. Meghan Patrick, Tanika Charles and Kelly Prescott will pick up the tour in Chicago and finish the train’s journey back to Canada with the final show in Gleichen, Alta. on Dec. 18.

The second train, which travels across Canada, will follow CP’s tracks west to Vancouver. Performing free concerts from Montreal to Calgary are Scott Helman and Madeline Merlo. CP Holiday Train favourite Terri Clark will join the train in Calgary with another talented musician to be announced later, wrapping up in the Vancouver area on Dec. 17.

CP is proud to bring the CP Holiday Train program to new communities each year. This year, new communities include Menands, N.Y.; Caledonia, Wis.; and Ossian, Iowa. The full schedule and routing are available at www.cpr.ca/holiday-train.

“From the crews operating the trains to signals and communications employees who are on-site to CP Police and local employees who ensure public safety, the program’s success is shared by many across the CP family,” said Creel. “I thank them all for helping make this program so special to our company and to the more than 1,100 communities the trains travel through.”

“The CP Holiday Train brings CP’s caring employees and caring neighbours together to ensure that local food banks can help the Canadians that make 1.1 million visits to food banks in a month and provide them with the ability to break bread over the holidays,” said Chris Hatch, Chief Executive Officer, Food Banks Canada. “Food banks and communities across Canada look forward to the train as it brings together neighbours to kick off the holidays and give back at the same time. We are so grateful for CP’s continued support to help us build a Canada where no one goes hungry.”
