Sultans of String release “I Am A Refugee” single and video with Somali Refugee Poet and Multimedia Artist Ifrah Mansour

0

Multi-award winning — plus New York Times and Billboard Magazine charting — Canadian world music collective Sultans of String deliver to the world stage their powerful, evocative new single “I Am A Refugee” — available now.

Featuring esteemed poet, multimedia artist, and Somali refugee Ifrah Mansour, the gorgeous and heart-gripping track is part of a larger cross-collaboration release, Refuge. Set for Spring 2020, this their seventh and most historic album features talents that arrived to Canada and the U.S. as immigrants and refugees — many of whom are GRAMMY and JUNO Award winners.

“Each one of us in the world has a remarkable story to tell…” says Sultans of String co-founder, Chris McKhool (Jesse Cook, Pavlo). It’s his bold, fiery fiddle — melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm — that lead the group’s distinctly signature sound.

Added to this rich foundation are bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), guitar wizard Eddie Paton, and Cuban percussion master Rosendo Chendy Leon (Alex Cuba). Together, their musical synergy strikes inimitable, explaining their three JUNO Award nominations, and four Canadian Folk Music Awards, plus many more.

“We are excited to share the beauty of these collaborations that feature special guests from First Nations, Turkey, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Greece, Syria, Mexico, Portugal, Cuba, and Sudan.”

The five-piece recently marked their 12th anniversary as a band, which includes a dizzying series of award-winning releases, international touring at notable venues (including JUNOFest, Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, NYC’s Birdland, and selling out Koerner Hall several times over), plus appearances on BBC, CBC, Irish National Radio, NPR, SiriusXM, and then some.

“This is a project that is centred around the positive contributions of refugees and new immigrants,” McKhool offers, recalling his own grandfather who stowed away on a Lebanese ship bound for North America a century ago. “We are bringing in special guests that are newcomers to this land, as well as global talents that have been ambassadors for peace. We wish to celebrate the successes of those who make the journey here, and bring their extraordinary talents with them.

“We hope the kinds of conversations we can have as musicians can provide a model for peace that our politicians and citizens find inspiration from.”

For her part, Mansour’s tireless work and advocacy complement the mission.

“I wrote the poem for me, for my community, and for those yearning for change or to deepen their empathy,” Mansour details. “I wrote it because I was so frustrated with so many people sending me emails, and asking what I thought about (the United States) travel ban.

“A lot of times, those that are surviving are busy surviving… It is very hard for them to voice their pain. Those that have an ounce of empathy, and that have experienced something similar, have that responsibility to share.

“Writing the poem was a way to unleash some pain that I could name finally.”

Born in Saudi Arabia, Ifrah Mansour’s family attempted to return to their native Somalia only to be met with a civil war and collapsed government. Her parents and five siblings soon left for a refugee camp in Dadaab, Kenya — one of the oldest and largest in the world — before settling in Dallas, Texas, where the only African-American they knew was the mailman. “The whole family would run to the door when he came,” she recalls. “We asked him, ‘where are all the brown people?’”

Ultimately, Mansour would move to Minneapolis around high-school age, and now lives among the largest Somali diaspora community America. Now 30, she notes she hasn’t followed the ‘Somali immigrant path’ that she — or anyone else — expected. “I was doing what everyone was doing, which was ‘go to college and seek a degree that will financially stabilize you and your extended family,’” she says. “I was on-track for ‘elementary ed’ and my life was set… I was going to be the ‘perfect kindergarten teacher.’”

It was then she discovered her penchant — and passion — for performance and artistry.

“A lot of times, you have the ‘feeling,’ but you don’t have the words,” she says. “I feel like, as an artist, I have these words…

“An artist’s job is to draw that hope, especially in a time of deep hopelessness,” she continues. “There is an increase of refugees around the world… An increase in homelessness… There is a deep need for people to hear a message of hope, but also a message of pain.

“As an artist, I have to keep holding on to hop in days where it feels that there is nothing left to hold onto. It helps to keep creating because now I have a metaphor for anyone who is experiencing some kind of injustice, homelessness, forced migration, and their rights are being taken away.”

“I Am A Refugee” is co-produced by McKhool and John “Beetle” Bailey. The beds were recorded on First Nations land at the renowned Indigenous-owned Jukasa Studios; founded by Ohsweken’s, Kenneth Hill & Jerry Montour, Jukasa Studios is a multi-million dollar studio created for world-class and developing artists to make music in surroundings rich in spirit and tradition. (Fun fact: the legendary 8072 G Series Vintage Analog Console — which spent 12 years of its life in Studio Three at Abbey Road Studios in London England — was purchased and moved to Jukasa Studios in 2009.) Overdubs and mixing was done at The Drive Shed with John “Beetle” Bailey, and mastering by Harry Hess at HBomb Mastering.

“I Am A Refugee” is available now. Refuge is set for release Spring 2020.

Expansive CD & LP Box Sets Present All Four Historic Hendrix Band of Gypsys Performances At The Fillmore East Newly Mixed by Eddie Kramer

0

Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, are proud to release Songs For Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts by Jimi Hendrix, on CD and digital November 22, with a vinyl release to follow on December 13. This collection assembles all four historic debut concerts by the legendary guitarist in their original performance sequence. The 5 CD or 8 vinyl set boasts over two dozen tracks that have either never before been released commercially or have been newly pressed and newly remixed. Those who pre-order the digital version will instantly receive the previously unreleased track “Message To Love,” from the New Year’s Eve second set performance on the collection.

Over the course of four extraordinary years, Jimi Hendrix placed his indelible stamp upon popular music with breathtaking velocity. Measured alongside his triumphs at Monterey Pop and Woodstock, Hendrix’s legendary Fillmore East concerts illustrated a critical turning point in a radiant career filled with indefinite possibilities.

The revolutionary impact Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles had upon the boundaries and definitions of rock, R&B, and funk can be traced to four concerts over the course of two captivating evenings. These performances were first celebrated by Band of Gypsys, which featured six songs from the two January 1, 1970 concerts, including “Machine Gun,” the album’s dramatic centerpiece. Issued in April 1970, Band of Gypsys challenged and surprised the wide following of Jimi Hendrix with its extended arrangements and vibrant mix of rock and soul.

In June of 1969, at the height of their fame, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, closed a musical chapter. Before the shockwaves could settle, Hendrix assembled a new, expanded ensemble to perform at Woodstock in August. A new chapter was opened as Hendrix introduced Gypsy Sun and Rainbows. The large ensemble included Jimi’s longtime friend Billy Cox, on bass, whom he had befriended when both were serving with the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky in 1962. This Woodstock lineup was short-lived; from its ashes a new trio emerged in October that Hendrix dubbed Band of Gypsys, consisting of Hendrix, Cox and Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles, who would also contribute occasional lead vocals. Hendrix was inspired by his collaboration with Cox and Miles and this creative renewal drove the development of promising new material such as “Power Of Soul,” “Burning Desire” and the extraordinary “Machine Gun.”

Their debut live performances were a series of four concerts at the Fillmore East in Manhattan – two on New Year’s Eve 1969 and two on New Year’s Day 1970, each of which were professionally recorded. Hendrix had sold out Madison Square Garden just nine months prior, but the Fillmore East was chosen as the setting for a live recording. Long before his fame, Hendrix had signed what he thought was a release for appearing as a studio musician in October 1965. Unfortunately, the one page artist agreement drafted by PPX Industries bound his services for a period of three years. Unwilling to live hands tied, Hendrix agreed to a 1968 legal settlement whereby Capitol Records would be granted the distribution rights for his next album. By the autumn of 1969, Capitol and PPX were pushing hard for the album delivery and Hendrix decided to give them a live album.

However stressful this legal obligation had been for the guitarist, the end result proved to be an artistic triumph. True to his unpredictability, Hendrix opened his four-show stint with a masterful, eleven song set that did not feature a single song he had commercially released. Exciting new songs such as “Izabella,” “Ezy Ryder” and “Burning Desire” thrilled the sold-out house. Hendrix would pepper the remaining three shows with supercharged reworkings of favorites such as “Stone Free,” “Purple Haze,” and “Fire” but these were presented alongside such devastating, newly developed fare as “Machine Gun.” In his review of the second New Year’s Eve concert, Down Beat critic Chris Albertson wrote, “That ability of his to utilize fully the technical possibilities of his instrument, combined with his fertile musical imagination, makes him an outstanding performer.”

By the end of January 1970, the band was history, but the blend of funk, rock and soul pioneered by the trio became history, making a profound impact on popular music in its wake. Notable devotees include funk pioneers Parliament-Funkadelic, Curtis Mayfield, the Isley Brothers (with whom Hendrix himself had at one time played) and Bootsy Collins, extending all the way forward to hip-hop. Countless artists cite the record as a cornerstone in their appreciation of Jimi Hendrix ’s remarkable abilities.

The original 1970 Band of Gypsys album was edited and sequenced from songs performed during the two Fillmore sets on January 1, 1970. Subsequent collections mined more material from each of the performances with significant chunks of these phenomenal recordings from those nights sitting unreleased for almost half a century. Newly mixed and restored in sequence without edits, fans can finally hear Hendrix, Cox and Miles blast through their genre-defying sets that included freshly written songs like “Earth Blues” and “Stepping Stone,” as well as Experience favorites inclusive of “Foxey Lady,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Wild Thing,” “Hey Joe” and “Purple Haze.” Additionally, exciting new versions of Howard Tate’s “Stop,” “Steal Away,” by Jimmy Hughes and a searing “Bleeding Heart” by Elmore James highlighted the command that the trio had over blues & R&B music.

The lavish package is filled with unseen photos from talent such as Fillmore East house photographer Amalie Rothschild, Jan Blom (whose iconic, color saturated images provided the original artwork for 1970’s Band of Gypsys) as well as Marshall Amplifier representative Marc Franklin, who had full access to the group in their dressing room backstage. The booklet features remembrances from bassist Billy Cox and liner notes by author/journalist/filmmaker Nelson George. Songs For Groovy Children was produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott – the trio that has overseen every project for Experience Hendrix since 1995. The box set was mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Bernie Grundman.

Kicking off today at the Paramount Theatre in Jimi’s hometown of Seattle, WA is the fall leg of the Experience Hendrix Tour, the acclaimed multi-artist celebration of Jimi Hendrix’s musical genius. The trek winds its way down the west coast into Oregon, California, Nevada, and then heading eastward into Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas, culminating in San Antonio Oct. 22. Participants include blues legend Buddy Guy, best-selling instrumental rock guitarist Joe Satriani,Taj Mahal, Dweezil Zappa, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson and Billy Cox. His has, arguably, the longest lasting musical relationship with Jimi Hendrix, spanning their time in the U.S. Army, performance in Nashville-based soul combos and with Band of Gypsys, and continuing with the Tribute Concert Tours in honor of the legacy of Jimi Hendrix to the present day.

6 Tips to Writing an Effective Dissertation for College

0

Working on college assignments might seem to be an easy task. However, most of the students find it to be challenging when it comes to writing dissertations. Below are some of the dissertation tips that can help in making the process of writing a dissertation an easy one.

Setting the Tone

The key to drawing the attention of your readers is by ensuring that you set the right tone for the essay. This is determined by your target audience. There are plenty of dissertation essays on the internet that you can read to identify the best tone that should be included in yours. When you type “pay someone to write my dissertation,” you will be amazed by the bulk of results that you get. This means people have been paying others to write their thesis. Why not do it too.

Dissertation help can be very useful

If you are not confident about the topic of your dissertation, don’t wait to score a poor grade. Get someone to write your dissertation and be guaranteed a good grade. Time management is one of the important aspects of students. You still need to study for your final exams and therefore, some help on your dissertation would be very helpful. You can also check some of the helpful tips to make the writing process an easy one.

Manage your writing and resting time

Dissertations can be lengthy, and therefore, if you are not careful, you can end up overworking. Such overworking makes it difficult for a student to be productive in their classwork. Therefore, ensure to manage your time properly to ensure that you get enough rest. That way, you will be re-energized to write the best dissertation possible. Balance the time that you spent in writing the dissertation and that spent in sleeping or doing other relaxation activities.

What is a literature review?

A literature review is the section of a dissertation that explains what other authors had to say about the topic. This is mot involving a section of the dissertation since it requires the writer to carry out thorough research on credible sources. It is also important to know how long should a literature review be. This will make it easy to know the amount of research that you should carry out.

Structural Considerations

In addition, ensure that you have understood the structure that you are going to use while writing the dissertation. That way, it will be easy to complete all the sections without facing any challenges. You will also not skip a section, which could result in you scoring a low grade. You need to familiarize yourself with the dissertation format before you commence the writing process.

A dissertation is an assignment not an encapsulation of your life’s work

Sites such as Resumethatworks.com argue out that your personality is reflected in what you write. When it comes to writing a dissertation, you need to understand that it is just an assignment and not a reflection of your life’s work. Therefore, focus on researching the topic as much as possible without getting personal. This way, you will be able to come up with a masterpiece. If you make it a part of your life’s work, you might limit yourself on your ability to write a perfect dissertation.

Write by sections, not by chapters

Dissertations follow a defined format made up of different sections. In order to ensure uniformity of the information that you write, ensure to write in sections rather than in chapters. Writing each chapter separately can result in the repetition of information, which is not a desirable characteristic of a good dissertation.

Critical attitude to your work

Having a positive attitude towards work enhances your ability to write a good quality essay. You can do a thesis review to ensure that you are confident and positive about the topic. This would make it easy to come up with ideas that would contribute to the dissertation. Avoid choosing a complex topic since this can affect your attitude in writing a good dissertation. Focus on what interests you.

Categorization of your work

Plan your work into categories to make it easy for you to write each of the sections effectively. It even seems easy with the different categories since dissertations tend to be lengthy. Therefore, avoid getting bored in the middle of the writing process and break down your work into sections. You can even decide on the specific sections that would work on each day.

Be mentally strong when it comes to feedback.

Essaywritingservice.ca provides students with pre-written dissertations which they can use as an example when planning to write theirs. Given the amount of time spent on writing the length dissertation, negative feedback could be disappointing. It is necessary to be strong and ready for any kind of feedback since some might require you to revise a huge section of the essay.

Concisely, the above college tips would be really helpful when writing a dissertation. Focus on a topic that interests you most, and the rest of the work will flow smoothly. We understand that dissertations are not one of the easiest essays to write, but with the right strategy and tips, it can turn out perfectly well.

Blake Shelton Readies “Fully Loaded: God’s Country” Album For December 13

0

Blake Shelton has been Loaded and Reloaded. Now with Fully Loaded: God’s Country, Shelton is bringing things full circle with both new music and recent hits on his upcoming release out December 13. The 12-song collection will feature seven hits from previous albums and five new tracks, including the three-time CMA nominated smash, “God’s Country.”

“Well, I knew the label would come up with some plan to release an album,” joked Shelton. “I’ve been vocal about how much I like this new way of releasing songs more frequently. It keeps me excited and gives me the opportunity to find the hot new song that I love and get it out to the fans quickly. I think they like it too. With five new songs on this album, you’ve got “God’s Country,’ ‘Hell Right’ and a few more that haven’t come out yet – maybe I wasn’t supposed to say that. But the fans will hear most of the music on Fully Loaded before it hits the streets in December.”

Five-time CMA Male Vocalist of the Year Shelton looks to add to his accolades this year with his multiple nominations. “God’s Country,” the fastest country single in the past year to reach one million track equivalents, is nominated for Video, Single and Song of the Year. The smash hit became Shelton’s 26th No. 1 on country radio, where it remained for a multi-week run, in addition to his 16th No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The country superstar also earned a Musical Event of the Year nomination for “Dive Bar,” his collaboration with music icon Garth Brooks.

Shelton’s new single “Hell Right” reunites him with his “Hillbilly Bone” pal Trace Adkins. Penned by David Garcia, Brett Tyler and Michael Hardy, the song is nearing Top 20 on the country airplay charts.

Between putting the finishing touches on Fully Loaded: God’s Country, Shelton has a few select tour dates and is currently filming for the next season of The Voice, which premiered Sept. 23. The Grand Ole Opry member also remains focused on his Ole Red partnership with Ryman Hospitality. The newest addition to the collection of restaurant and entertainment venues will open in Orlando next year and joins locations in Tishomingo, Nashville and Gatlinburg.

National Album Day Launches A ‘White – Label’ LP Auction

0

With this year’s National Album Day set for 12th October – one of the events being staged as part of a week-long build up that will celebrate our nation’s love of the album will be a ‘White Label’ Auction of around 300 white-label LP test pressings.

The auction – the first of its kind to be held – will take place the weekend prior on Saturday, 5th October at 11.00am. It will be hosted live onsite/online for UK and international collectors by the music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions from their Newton-Le-Willows (Merseyside) base.

The explosion in sales of vinyl in recent years has created a wealth of ‘white label’ test pressings – produced to ensure the sound quality is as the artist intended and so called because there is no sleeve/label artwork at this stage. With as few as 5 or 10 of each being produced, these first-off-the-press copies are typically checked by artists and their representatives and are much sought after by fans and collectors.

The breadth of British music will be represented in the sale, including early 60s/70s recordings from David Bowie (Decca), The Who (My Generation), Eric Clapton (Slowhand), Dusty Springfield (Dusty in Memphis) and The Specials (The Specials – signed), to more contemporary offerings such as a signed copy of No.6 Collaborations Project by Ed Sheeran. There will be discs from the likes of Liam Gallagher (As You Were), Coldplay (The Butterfly Package – signed), Paul Weller (Stanley Road), Arctic Monkeys (Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino), Kylie Minogue (Step Back in Time), 2019 Mercury Prize shortlisted Foals (Everything Lost Will Not Be Saved Part 1) and Anna Calvi (Hunter). One of this year’s National Album Day ‘album champions’, Mark Ronson (Late Night Feelings), also features in the sale

The catalogue will be live online by 20th September here.
