Alexisonfire Announce January 2020 Headline Shows with The Distillers

0

ALEXISONFIRE has announced select headline shows, to take place this January 2020 in Western Canada and Seattle, WA. The run kicks off January 20 in Winnipeg and includes stops in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver with a final stop in Seattle on January 26. Supporting Alexisonfire on all dates are reunited modern day punk icons The Distillers who will co-headline the Seattle show. Montreal garage punk rockers NOBRO, hot off their national tour with PUP, will be opening all Canadian dates.

Tickets for all shows go on sale on Friday, November 22 at 10:00am local time. See below for all show dates and visit theonlybandever.com for direct ticket links. Alexisonfire have partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket will go to organizations bringing dignity, equity, and access to communities who need it.

Alexisonfire unleashed two brand new bangers this year, “Familiar Drugs” available to stream and purchase HERE, and “Complicit” available to stream and purchase HERE. Produced by AOF, long-time friend, Karl Bareham (City and Colour), and mixed by Grammy-award winning Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Modest Mouse), the songs marked the first time the band has released new music in almost 10 years.

An official video for single “Familiar Drugs” directed by Michael Maxxis (who directed AOF’s personal favourite video for “The Northern” and City and Colour’s “Fragile Bird”, “Thirst”, and “Lover Come Back”) is available to watch HERE. The song was featured on Hockey Night in Canada earlier this year when the Montreal Canadiens, and Toronto Maple Leafs faced off.

On the heels of new music, AOF performed a handful of shows for lucky fans around the world, including one show in London, UK, and 2 consecutive nights each in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto’s Budweiser Stage. Each of the first two dates in NY, L.A. and Toronto sold-out quickly with Alexisonfire having the distinction of being one of a handful of Canadian artists to perform two consecutive nights at the iconic Toronto venue alongside City and Colour, Drake, The Tragically Hip, and Sarah McLachlan. A highlight of the evening is when the mascot for NBA reigning champions The Toronto Raptors, aptly named The Raptor, kicked off the first show after Toronto’s Game 6 victory over Golden State the previous night.

Joining Alexisonfire as openers on all dates are modern day punk icons The Distillers and Montreal garage punk rockers NOBRO. Few modern day punk icons have not only embodied the genre so truthfully but also transformed the depth of what it can mean like The Distillers. Formed in 1998 in L.A., the cult-status band, featuring guitarist/vocalist Brody Dalle at the helm, returned to perfect punk form last year after reuniting and releasing their first music in 15 years. NOBRO, a self-proclaimed power trio of punk, garage rock babes, combines technical prowess and garage band aesthetics, using bass driven rhythms and heavy guitar riffs to underscore irresistibly catchy melodies.

My Next Read: The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 2 by Ed Ward

0

From rock and roll historian Ed Ward comes a comprehensive, authoritative, and enthralling cultural history of one of rock’s most exciting eras. The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 2 1964–1977: The Beatles, the Stones, and the Rise of Classic Rock is an undertaking only he could do.

It’s February 1964 and The Beatles just landed in New York City, where the NYPD, swarms of fans, and a crowd of two hundred journalists await their first American press conference. It begins with the question on everyone’s mind: “Are you going to get a haircut in America?” and ends with a reporter tugging Paul McCartney’s hair in an attempt to remove his nonexistent wig. This is where The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 2 kicks off. Chronicling the years 1964 through the mid-1970s, this latest volume covers one of the most exciting eras of rock history, which saw a massive outpouring of popular and cutting-edge music.

Ward weaves together an unputdownable narrative told through colorful anecdotes and shares the behind-the-scenes stories of the megastars, the trailblazers, DJs, record executives, concert promoters, and producers who were at the forefront of this incredible period in music history. From Bob Dylan to Bill Graham, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, and more, everyone’s favorite musicians of the era make an appearance in this sweeping history that reveals how the different players, sounds, and trends came together to create the music we all know and love today.

ED WARD was the rock-and-roll historian on Fresh Air for more than thirty years, reaching fourteen million listeners. Currently he is the cohost of the Let It Roll podcast. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and countless music magazines. He is also the author of The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 1 and author of Michael Bloomfield: The Rise and Fall of an American Guitar Hero. He lives in Austin, Texas.

JUNO Award-Nominated & Award-Winning Reggae Master JAY DOUGLAS Drops “Jah Children”

0

JUNO Award-nominated and award winning reggae and music master Jay Douglas drops “Jah Children” — available now from Slammin Media and worldwide by Believe Distribution. Jay is available for advance phoners across Canada and in-person interviews and/or in-studio performances in the Toronto area.

The track features iconic Jamaican dancehall DJ General Trees and a remix by JUNO Award-winning Canadian reggae artist Dubmatix.

As Douglas sings, “we live in a land, we got so much to give thanks for,” the track lands as an optimistic ode, aiming to shine light thru the many social and political issues plaguing the world.

“Three years ago, I performed at a reggae festival in Toronto with General Trees as the headliner,” Douglas recalls on how “Jah Children” and the collaboration came to be. “I was so impressed with his performance… He had the audience in his hands.

“I invited the General to Side Door studio to put a rap on ‘Jah Children,’” he continues. “He accepted my invitation, and we played the track for him… He looked at me and smiled; it took him less than one hour to do his rap, he was so excited.”

Jay Douglas first appeared on stage in Montego Bay, Jamaica and, in the 45 years of entertaining since, has developed into an Internationally idolized musical renaissance man thanks to his wide-ranging repertoire of American blues, West Indian rhythms, and jazz standards — including fronting The Cougars, a circa-1960s/1970s R&B act, and Light in the Attic’s ‘From Jamaica to Toronto’ concert series.

Nominated for a JUNO Award for ‘Reggae Recording of the Year,’ Douglas has also won NOW Magazine’s ‘Best R&B Act,’ the Annual Toronto Reggae Awards’ ‘Male Reggae Vocalist of the Year,’ and the BBPA Harry Jerome Awards’ ‘G98.7 Entertainment Award.’

Top 5 Tips For Living A Long, Stress-Free Life

0

What do you think would be the most important thing you could do to live a longer, happier and healthier life? Most people would agree they would try to get rid of the stress. Or work with things they are really passionate about. Easier said than done, right?

Many of us live in a reality where not a day goes by without us feeling stressed out, anxious, tense or nervous about one thing or another. Busy work schedules, hectic personal lives, tons of bills to cover – it’s a vicious cycle we can’t seem to get rid of, no matter how hard we try. And this leads to chronic stress, which is defined as the extended pressure that the body experiences over a long period of time. In reality, chronic stress can trigger serious health problems in the long run if not treated seriously.

Here are five tips you could try for living a longer, stress-free life;

1.  Listen to Music

Being a blog about music we obviously must start with encouraging you to listen to more music if you feel you suffer from stress. Research clearly support that listening to relaxing music (and you define what is relaxing to you!), can lower stress hormones and blood pressure. Classical music is used by beauty salons to make their customers feel relaxed during treatments but it is also used by game developers when they create games people tend to play as a way to stress down, like monotone but relaxing games like the typical slot machine. Switch to a game of Fortnite and you will notice the difference.

2.  Learn To Say NO

So let’s say you are like most people, driving to your daily job early in the morning, dealing with demanding tasks and bosses, dealing with flat tires on your way to running an errand, urgent deadlines, flights to catch, kids to pick up from school, baking cookies for the upcoming football game for your young son and buying a new tue tue skirt for your ballet-loving daughter – all in the same day. You barely have time to catch a breath, not to mention have a hobby and actually enjoy it. For how long do you think you will be able to keep it up? You need to learn how to say NO, ask for help and delegate chores, and this applies to both professional and personal life. Start by telling your spouse, friend or manager, when you are feeling overwhelmed. Ask for help and if not possible consider changing your job or following a different career path altogether.

3.  Give Up Bad Habits

It’s not enough to say no to others, we should also look at our own choices and habits. No exercise, chaotic fast food meals, barely drinking any water but thriving on caffeine and energy drinks, sleeping 3 to 4 hours a night only to end up with a new pile of bills the next day.

If you find habits like these, that tend to make your life more stressful then it’s time to quit them for a healthier lifestyle. Simplify your life by giving up your most damaging habits such as drinking alcohol too often or smoking, eating fatty foods that are bad for you or never exercising.

It will take a lot of effort to give up something you have been used to doing for many years, but it must be done if you truly want to live a longer and happier life. Here are a few tips;

  • Take things one step at a time.
  • Start by drinking one extra glass of water every day. Then move up to two glasses.
  • Skip your daily energizer and painkillers.
  • Try to do some stretching early in the morning and some meditation at night.

4.  Find Your Passion

If you hate your job and you resent being at the workplace for 8 to 12 hours a day or more, it will eventually eat you up and make you ill. Think about what you would be truly passionate about doing and being remunerated for and go for it. It’s never too late to get a new degree or go to job interviews and learn new skills. Smart technologies are really popular at the moment and many jobs can be done online opening up endless opportunities. You would be surprised to learn just how much things have changed since you last applied for a new job a decade ago.

5.  Focus On The “Now”

All self-development and mindfulness books tell you the same thing: if you want to be happy, you must learn how to live in the present and be active in the moment. Do only one thing at a time and eliminate all distractions that could be preventing you from keeping your focus. If you need to do a shopping list, put your phone away and stop scrolling on your Instagram feed. You’ll end up forgetting to write something down and be forced to go back to the store. If you need to finish a task at work, clear your desk and computer from any extra open tabs and reports and only work on your task.

You will need to practice mindfulness in all areas of your life and it won’t be easy.

Keep going and try to find a fun, relaxing or engaging hobby – it will make a huge difference. Paint, do puzzles, play games online, read a new book every week, walk your neighbors dogs. Whatever relaxes you will definitely help you deter the stress from your system, so it’s worth trying. But most importantly, never forget to listen to music!
