My Next Read: Up Jumped the Devil: The Real Life of Robert Johnson

0

Robert Johnson’s recordings, made in 1936 and 1937, have profoundly influenced generations of singers, guitarists, and songwriters. Yet until now, his short life—he was murdered at the age of 27—has been poorly documented. Gayle Dean Wardlow has been interviewing people who knew Johnson since the early 1960s, and he was the person who discovered Johnson’s death certificate in 1967. Bruce Conforth began his study of Johnson’s life and music in 1970 and made it his mission to fill in what was still unknown about him. In this definitive biography, the two authors relied on every interview, resource, and document, much of it material no one has seen before. This is the first book about Johnson that documents his lifelong relationship with family and friends in Memphis, details his trip to New York, uncovers where and when his wife Virginia died and the impact this had on him, fully portrays the other women Johnson was involved with, and tells exactly how and why he died and who gave him the poison that killed him. Up Jumped the Devil will astonish blues fans worldwide by painting a living, breathing portrait of a man who was heretofore little more than a legend.

Jerry Garcia’s Music Featured in World Music Compilation “Annapurna’s Song, Music of the Himalayas”

0

This year, to honor Jerry Garcia on his Aug. 1 birthday, the Jerry Garcia Foundation is happy to announce that it has partnered with Seven Seas Music to produce its first musical release, “Annapurna’s Song, Music of the Himalayas,” a compilation of music from the Himalayan region consisting of 12 recorded tracks.

“Annapurna’s Song, Music of the Himalayas” is planned for release on Sept. 28, 2019 and will be available through regular digital platforms.

The compilation will include “Clouds,” a tune featuring Jerry Garcia on guitar. “Clouds” was composed by Indian musician Sanjay Mishra, and recorded in 1995 at the Grateful Dead’s Club Front studio in San Rafael, California. The song was originally released on Mishra’s “Blue Incantation” album.

All proceeds from the upcoming release will benefit the American Himalayan Foundation.

Jerry’s family members, his daughter, Keelin Garcia, and wife, Manasha Garcia, are working to produce the project with Brooke Wentz, founder and CEO of Seven Seas Music, an international music catalogue. Brooke received a Billboard Award in 1994 for producing the best International album of the decade: Global Meditation – Authentic Music from Meditative Traditions of the World.

The American Himalayan Foundation was founded in 1981 by a small group of climbers who were originally drawn to Nepal for its mountains and have continued to return to the region, inspired by their love for the people. Their organization helps create a positive impact on the education, health and opportunity for the Himalayan people.

The album title was inspired by a mountain located in Nepal named Annapurna. The name is derived from Sanskrit meaning “the giver of food and nourishment.” Anna (अन्न) means “food” or “grains” and pūrṇa (पूर्ण) means “full, complete and perfect.” Many streams flowing from the slopes of the Annapurna Massif provide water for the farms and pastures located at lower altitudes.

Martin Guitar Announces Partnership with D’Addario on Playback String Recycling Program

0

C. F. Martin & Co. announces their official partnership with D’Addario on the Playback string recycling program. Recognizing a growing need in the industry, D’Addario developed the program as a means to recycle guitar and orchestral strings, which are not accepted through municipal recycling programs. With over 3.9 million strings recycled to date, Playback has been widely successful, offering local string recycling centers at dealers, or the option to mail in used strings. The collaboration is a precise pairing, aligning with Martin’s commitment to environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility.

Environmental impact is something Martin takes seriously. They have programs in place at the factory to recycle string waste, sound holes, sawdust, and more, and over 85% of their guitars are built from sustainably sourced wood. With their logo on recycling containers and signage at local string recycling centers, Martin will have a clear presence in the Playback program.

The Playback program is powered by TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company that aims to transform waste into new materials and products. After the strings are collected, they go through a process to separate the metal and nylon strings; the metal strings are melted down and smelted into new alloys, while the nylon strings are recycled into plastic applications. With over 330 string recycling centers across the U.S. at local musical instrument dealers, it makes it easy for any musician to repurpose their guitar or orchestral strings responsibly.

Martin maintains an unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices and is the first in the Musical Instrument Industry to receive B Corp Status. Martin continually drives the acoustic guitar market forward, introducing innovative features that have become standards across the industry. These groundbreaking innovations include the introduction of X-bracing, the 14-fret guitar, and the “Dreadnought” size guitar.

N*E*R*D’s ‘In Search Of…’ Revisited For Urban Legends’ New Deluxe 4LP Vinyl Edition Pairing Acclaimed Album’s Original 2001 European “Electronic Version” With Its 2002 Worldwide “Rock Version”

0

N*E*R*D’s debut album, In Search Of…, was first released in Europe on August 6, 2001. The album’s first edition featured mainly electronic instrumentation for its 13 tracks. On March 12, 2002, N*E*R*D released a new version of In Search Of… worldwide, with the original album’s electronic soundscape replaced by instruments played by funk-rock band Spymob. For the first time, In Search Of…‘s “electronic version” and “rock version” have been paired, for new deluxe 4LP vinyl set to be released October 25 by Virgin/Urban Legends/UMe. On the same date, An expanded deluxe digital edition for the album’s “electronic version” will be released. The new edition adds seven rare and previously unissued remixes and live tracks to the album, all of which are making their digital release debuts.

In Search Of…‘s first edition, also known as the “electronic version,” features drum machines and synthesizers for a sound more typical of N*E*R*D duo Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo’s production work as The Neptunes. The album’s first edition also features an “Intro” track and three interstitial skits with the tracks “Things Are Getting Better,” “Stay Together,” and “Tape You.”

The album’s 12-track global “rock version” is sequenced differently and does not include the first edition’s “Intro” track or skits. Entertainment Weekly bestowed an A- review grade on the album’s “rock version,” saying the second edition “has a crackling vigor missing from the first stab, and its mélange of genres makes for music unlike anything else around.” Rolling Stone awarded it four stars, and MOJO also praised it, saying, “It is quizzical, troubled, socially concerned, compassionate, schizoid, retro-eclectic, strikingly modern, racially mixed–and even likes women.”

In Search Of…‘s new 4LP set presents the album’s “rock version” in one 2LP gatefold jacket and its European “electronic version” in its own 2LP gatefold jacket, packaged together with a 24-page booklet in a rigid slipcase. The new edition’s LP lacquers were cut by Alex Abrash at AA Mastering.

The seven rare bonus tracks featured on the new In Search Of… “electronic version” deluxe digital edition will all make their digital debuts with the new release. Three of the tracks have never been commercially released in the U.S. in any format:

• “Lapdance (Trent Reznor Remix)” was promo only and has never been commercially released.

Top 5 Best Caribbean Cruise Destinations

0

If you’re looking to cruise in the Caribbean check out these top destinations. Keep reading for top 5 best Caribbean cruise destinations.

Did you know that more than 28 million people boarded a cruise ship last year?

There’s no doubt about it. A cruise is one of the best ways to explore a particular region of the world–the Caribbean, in particular.

Home to 26 countries spread across hundreds of islands, there’s no shortage of amazing Caribbean destinations. The question is: How do you choose the best?

Every Caribbean cruise line offers their own itineraries, but it doesn’t hurt to do some research ahead of time. Here’s our pick for the “best of the best” island destinations.

  1. Cuba

Ready to travel back in time? You don’t need a Delorean–you just need a cruise ship bound for Havana, Cuba.

Here you’ll find fascinating history in the form of cobblestone streets lined with vintage cars from the 1950s. Throw in some salsa music and a cold, minty mojito, and you’re starting to get the picture.

And if you’re worried about soaking up some sun, don’t be. Cuba boasts some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, including the aptly named Playa Paraiso (Paradise Beach).

  1. Jamaica

The tiny isle of Jamaica is a must on any Caribbean cruise itinerary.

Renowned for its friendly people and beautiful scenery, there’s plenty to keep you entertained during your visit. Tour Mystic Mountain or the Dunn’s River Falls, or enjoy a leisurely stroll past the colonial architecture of Falmouth.

When it’s time to relax, grab a skewer of jerk chicken and wash it down with some ginger beer. As you watch a magnificent sunset, you’ll realize nothing beats the fun of Caribbean cruises.

  1. Puerto Rico

If you’re seeking the perfect combination of history and culture, look no farther than Puerto Rico.

Take a hike through the jungle of El Unique–the only US National Park that’s a tropical rainforest. Then explore the 16th-century castles and forts that make up Old San Juan.

And with the Bacardi distillery located just a few steps away, there’s no shortage of great rum cocktails to savor. You may even find yourself dancing the merengue before the night is through.

  1. St. Thomas

Each of the US Virgin Islands is stunning in its own right, but our favorite is St. Thomas.

The capital town of Charlotte Amalie offers a unique glimpse into Danish colonial life. Because of its deep harbor, the island was also a favorite haunt of infamous pirates.

Explore Blackbeard’s Castle or sign up for a lobster diving tour. And if you like shopping, you’re in luck–this island boasts more duty-free shopping options than any other Caribbean island.

  1. Barbados

If you’ve got the time to venture further south (and east), add Barbados to your Caribbean cruise itinerary.

This tiny island enjoys over 3,000 hours of sunshine every year, making it a beach lover’s dream. White sand beaches surround the island, along with coral reefs teeming with sea life.

Are you a rum aficionado? You’ll love learning about (and tasting) your favorite drink at the world’s oldest rum distillery, Mount Gay.

From beautiful beaches and picturesque sunsets to delicious food and fruity cocktails, there’s something in the Caribbean for everyone.

6 Tips To Make A Living Betting On Sports In 2019

0

One of the beautiful things about the rise and power of the internet is that it has opened many different career opportunities that didn’t exist before. Jobs such as digital marketing, website creation, and digital design are just a few examples of internet created jobs. Even better, most of these jobs can be self-taught over the internet itself. As of today, we are seeing many of these jobs jump into other industries such as business and sports.

A great example of this can be seen with professional sports betting. While it may have fun perks such as remote work and getting to watch sports for a living, this job is also known as one of the most demanding in this field. It requires extensive knowledge, financial backing, and a will-to-win attitude. Anything less than these qualities can be devastatingly costly. That being said, the internet once again comes to the rescue by providing many different resources to succeed as a professional sports bettor on sites like ทางเข้า gclub. Some cases of sports betters started off doing it for fun and have turned it into a passion job that pays very well. To be clear, nothing can guarantee success to that extent. However, in the case you want to achieve similar success, here are six tips to make a living betting on sports in 2019.

#1: Always Have A Budget Limit

Before thinking about strategies or emergency escape plans, the first step in making a living off of sports betting is to create a budget limit. Having a limit has far more benefits than people realize. In addition to saving you from huge financial losses, a budget can be used to help you allocate money on different bets, use the extra money for bet support, and other similar benefits.

#2: Research For Value

After setting a budget, the first technical thing to learn how to do is research. To be more specific, you need to learn how to research for value over quantity. Researching the opposite is one of the most common mistakes that rookie bettors make. By sticking to statistics and numerical reasons to bet, it will allow you to take factors such as a biased opinion or lucky picks out of the equation

#3: Never Chase Your Losses

One of the most limiting factors when it comes to betting is emotion. Mixing emotion with betting most often leads to financial losses opposed to lucky wins. Because of this, make sure to always tell yourself to never chase yours loses. Doing so will most likely lead you down a rabbit hole of chasing losses that will eventually lead you in some serious financial trouble.

#4: Know The Betting Rules Like The Back Of Your Hand

Another important factor in being a successful bettor is making sure you know the betting rules of the platform you are on. For the most part, different platforms have different rules. Also, as a professional bettor, you will most likely be on different platforms placing bets. So, by knowing the rules, it will allow you to avoid penalties and find loopholes within the systems.

#5: Find A Consistent Betting Strategy

After some time in the game, you will come to find a successful strategy that works better than others. Once you find one, it’s best to stick to it in cases of uncertainty. As far as how to get on, that comes through experience combined with trial and error.

#6: Always Ignore Personal Bias

Similar to taking the emotion out of betting, personal bias is a specific form of it to look out for. The reality of sports betting is that your favorite teams often tend to get a priority. If you want to make a living doing this, ignore personal bias at all costs.26
