Multi-platinum musician Jack Johnson announces new album, In Between Dub, featuring a remix collection of some of Johnsonās most beloved recordings from his over two decade long career, but with a dub twist. In Between Dub will be available on all streaming platforms and select retailers on June 2, 2023 through Brushfire/Republic Records/Universal Music Canada. Lead track, āTraffic In The Skyā, one of two new Lee āScratchā Perry dub remixes, is out today on all streaming platforms.
In Between Dub, a three-year creation, began after Jack reached out to famed reggae pioneer Lee āScratchā Perry in early 2020 to produce a dub remix album. After a year-long pandemic pause, Lee āScratchā Perry began working on several tracks, crafting original music and mixes from his studio in Jamaica. Lee āScratchā Perry sent the sketches over to Jack in Hawaii and together they connected to collaborate on a direction.
āGrowing up in Hawaiāi with reggae music always on the radio, Lee āScratchā Perry was a living Legend. When I found out he was up for remixing a few of my songs I was blown away. The remixes evolved and he ended up adding his voice to my songs. It was like he had done a magic trick to the music. I will be forever grateful for the time, love, and energy that Lee āScratchā Perry put into this project.ā
On August 29, 2021, the project was suddenly brought to another halt as Lee āScratchā Perry departed this physical world. In 2022 Jack and Subatomic Sound System, Lee āScratchā Perryās band of the last decade, connected directly and discovered they had all the pieces to bring Lee āScratchā Perryās creation to completion.
In Between Dub features two new Lee āScratchā Perry dubs, plus a Subatomic Sound System dub with vocals from Lee āScratchā Perry, along with dub remixes by Scientist, Dennis Bovell, Nightmares On Wax, Mad Professor, Yaadcore and Monk.
Lee āScratchā Perryās creativity has resulted in some of the most startling and original sounds ever to emerge from Jamaica, and the uniqueness of his vision has found resonance in music forms around the world. He was involved in every style on the island from the pre-ska era to the āgolden ageā of reggae at the end of the 70s, until a personal metamorphosis saw him shifting focus from a record producer to a recording and performing artist engaging with the spoken word, collaborating with a range of practitioners, and developing a practice as a painter, sculptor and performance artist. Later projects continued to be marked by the individualism that always set his material apart, and his trajectory was motivated by a burning desire to create unique and inspiring music and art in a ceaseless effort to venerate the Almighty, a savior Perry perpetually sought to serve through his art. Bob Marley, Max Romeo, The Clash, Beastie Boys are a few of the noteworthy to benefit from his magic. ~David Katz
