What Emerging Artists Get Wrong About Releasing Music

Here we go:

What Emerging Artists Get Wrong About Releasing Music

You put the song out and nothing happened. You’re shocked. You shouldn’t be.

Here’s the truth nobody in the industry wants to say out loud: the release is not the moment. The release is the beginning of the work. And most artists treat it like the finish line.

They spend six months on the record. They agonize over the mix. They argue about the artwork. They pick the release date like it’s a moon landing. And then they put it out on a Friday because that’s what everyone does, and they watch the streams trickle in, and they wonder why the world isn’t paying attention.

The world isn’t paying attention because you didn’t give it a reason to.

Spotify doesn’t care about your album. Apple Music doesn’t care about your album. The playlists are controlled by algorithms and relationships and money you don’t have. You know what cuts through all of that? A real audience. People who actually give a damn. People who were waiting for it. And you can’t build that audience by posting a countdown clock on Instagram three days before the drop.

The artists who break through now are the ones who’ve been building in public for years. Not manufacturing a persona. Actually building. Talking to people. Showing up. Making their process visible. Letting fans into the room before the room is finished.

You want to know what the biggest mistake is? Releasing music before anyone knows who you are and then being surprised when no one cares. Awareness comes before releases. Not the other way around. This isn’t complicated. It’s just hard, and hard is the part everyone wants to skip.

The second biggest mistake is releasing too much too fast with no connective tissue. A single here, an EP there, a surprise drop, a collab nobody asked for. There’s no narrative. There’s no through line. Fans don’t know what to follow. You’re creating noise in a world already drowning in it.

The third mistake is chasing the format instead of serving the song. Not every song needs to be three minutes and ten seconds because that’s what gets added to playlists. Not every project needs to be an EP because that’s what the blog said. The format should serve the music. The music should not be bent to serve the format.

And the fourth mistake, the one that stings the most, is releasing music without a live strategy. The record is the advertisement for the show. It has always been this way. Streaming didn’t change that. If anything, streaming made it more true. The money is on the road. The connection is on the road. The fans who will follow you for twenty years are the ones who saw you in a room of forty people and felt something real. You can’t replicate that with content.

Here’s what actually works. Pick a lane and commit to it. Build your audience before you need them. Release music with intention and context. Play live constantly. Talk to people like a human being, not a brand. Be patient in a way that the algorithm punishes but real life rewards.

The music business has never been fair. It has never been a meritocracy. Great songs get ignored every single day. That’s the reality. But the artists who endure aren’t the ones who got lucky on release day. They’re the ones who kept showing up long after the algorithm stopped caring.

The release is not the moment. You are the moment. Act accordingly.

Barenaked Ladies, Graham Nash, The Beaches, And Sloan Lead A Stacked 36th Harvest Music Festival In Fredericton

Downtown Fredericton becomes a music destination again this September. The 36th Harvest Music Festival has announced its 2026 lineup, running September 15 through 20, with Barenaked Ladies, Graham Nash, The Beaches, and Sloan among the headliners. Drive-By Truckers, Blackberry Smoke, Young The Giant, Matt Andersen, Joan Osborne, and Sierra Hull fill out a program that leans hard into blues, roots, rock, and soul, exactly what Harvest does best.

“With icons like Graham Nash and Barenaked Ladies, alongside powerhouse acts like Drive-By Truckers, Blackberry Smoke, Young The Giant, and Matt Andersen, the 2026 program balances familiar favourites with exciting discoveries,” said festival programmer Brent Staeben. “Add in standout artists like The Beaches, Joan Osborne, and Sierra Hull, and it captures the true spirit of Harvest, where every stage offers something special, and your new favourite artist is always just around the corner.”

The festival is also expanding its physical footprint this year with the return of the Hoodoo House, a smaller intimate venue with a curated focus on every facet of the blues, giving attendees more options and offering some of the most affordable ticketing at the festival. The Barracks tent has also been reframed to offer more choice and discovery acts across rock, roots, indie, and funk. More artists are still to be announced in the coming weeks.

Chance The Rapper, Father John Misty, And Modest Mouse Headline Victoria’s Phillips Backyard Music Festival

0

Three headliners, three nights, one Victoria backyard that keeps delivering. Phillips Backyard Music Festival has announced its 2026 lineup, running July 10 through 12 at Phillips Brewing and Malting Company on Government Street. Chance The Rapper headlines Friday, Father John Misty takes Saturday, and Modest Mouse closes the weekend on Sunday. Tickets go on sale March 25 with single-day passes at $125 and weekend passes at $325.

Chance The Rapper makes his Victoria debut, a genuine draw for the three-time Grammy winner whose blend of hip-hop, gospel, and soul has made him one of the most distinctive voices in American music. Father John Misty brings his sardonic indie-folk to Saturday alongside Sudan Archives, whose violin-driven genre-bending R&B made a serious impression at this same festival in 2023. Modest Mouse close out the weekend with the full weight of a catalog that stretches back to 1993, frontman Isaac Brock’s unmistakable voice anchoring a set that will reach well beyond “Float On.”

The supporting lineup is equally well-considered across all three days. Friday features Duckwrth, Sophia Stel, Nicky MacKenzie, and DACEY. Saturday brings Jon and Roy, Flower Face, and Carmine. Sunday rounds out with Wolf Parade, riding a massive wave of renewed attention after “I’ll Believe in Anything” became a breakout moment through the Heated Rivalry series, alongside Angine de Poitrine, Fake Shark, and Darrian Gerard. The Music BC side stage returns with additional artists to be announced.

This year’s festival consolidates to a single weekend by design. “By focusing on one weekend, we can be more purposeful about where we invest, bringing in great artists, keeping ticket and beer prices approachable, and delivering an amazing live music experience for Victoria,” said Phillips Brewing marketing director Robyn Skinner. The expanded space, no RFID requirements, and raised stage for sightlines throughout the backyard all return for 2026.

Phillips Backyard Music Festival 2026:

Friday, July 10 – Chance The Rapper, Duckwrth, Sophia Stel, Nicky MacKenzie, DACEY

Saturday, July 11 – Father John Misty, Sudan Archives, Jon and Roy, Flower Face, Carmine

Sunshine, the new album from much-lauded British band Jungle, is set for release on August 14 via AWAL—pre-save/pre-order here. A new song, “Carry On,” is out today—listen here. The track, which debuted this morning as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record, features Lydia Kitto’s vocals at its emotional core alongside founders, songwriters and producers Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland’s signature production.

In support of the album, Jungle will embark on a global headline tour with stops across North America, the U.K. and Europe this fall, with an Australia run to follow in March 2027. Kicking off on September 9 in Minneapolis, stops include New York’s Barclays CenterLos Angeles’ Crypto.com ArenaLondon’s O2 Arena and many more. See below for full tour routing and visit junglejunglejungle.com for more information.

Tickets are on sale to the public starting March 27, with artist presale beginning March 26. Jungle is using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange to help fans get tickets at the original price. Tickets can only be resold on Ticketmaster at face value. In states where laws prevent resale restrictions, Ticketmaster will still honor Jungle’s terms by keeping resale prices at face value on its site.

Sunshine follows the band’s critically acclaimed 2023 LP Volcano, called “unstoppable” and a “timeless classic” by NPR. Volcano saw the band receive widespread praise and tour the world in its wake, as well as the runaway success of Platinum single “Back On 74,” which took the world by storm upon release.

The album will be released in unique physical formats, including black 180g single gatefold LP, Desert Peach single gatefold LP, translucent brown marble single gatefold LP and digipak CD.

Jungle, whose live performances were praised as a “perfect…come-as-you-are party” by Variety, will look to bring their signature show to an ever-wider audience, having played for over 190,000 people on their previous global tour in 2023 and 2024.

Jungle was founded by Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland, who met at the age of 10 in West London’s Shepherd’s Bush. They began making music together at the beginning of 2013, choosing to put the aesthetic emphasis on the music’s surrounding artwork and videos rather than on their own identities. The production and songwriting duo has since expanded, welcoming vocalist and producer Lydia Kitto to the group as a permanent member in 2023.

Jungle’s acclaimed 2014 self-titled debut album was a Mercury Prize nominee and is now Gold-certified while their lauded 2018 follow-up, For Ever, reached #10 on the UK Albums Chart. In addition, their 2021 album, Loving In Stereo, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Current Electronic Albums chart while also peaking at #3 on Independent Albums, #4 on Current Rock Albums and #6 on Current Alternative Albums charts. Their fourth album, Volcano, continued their commercial and critical success, peaking at #3 on the UK Albums Chart as well as earning the band a BRIT Award for Group of the Year. They’ve performed on five continents, headlining venues both stateside and abroad while performing at major music festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Foreigner Announce Massive 50th Anniversary Tour Expansion With New Dates And A Broadway-Style Musical

0

Fifty years in and Foreigner are not slowing down. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have announced a major expansion of their 2026 anniversary touring schedule, adding new dates in Albuquerque, El Paso, Scottsdale, Reno, and more to a calendar that already tops 90 shows across the U.S. and Europe, with numerous sold-out concerts already on the books. The celebration extends into 2027, when the band marks the 50th anniversary of their iconic self-titled debut album.

“When I started Foreigner in 1976, I never could have imagined that these songs would carry us through fifty years and still resonate with audiences around the world,” said founding member Mick Jones. The numbers bear him out: more than 80 million albums sold, 16 Top 30 hits, 10 multi-platinum albums, and catalog streams approaching 20 million per week. Billboard’s Greatest of All Time listings rank them alongside Fleetwood Mac in Top 10 hits, ahead of Journey.

The anniversary year spans formats and continents. April brings original vocalist Lou Gramm back into the fold for “Foreigner 4 Deluxe,” performing the legendary album ‘4’ in its entirety across Florida dates. June launches a 26-date European run including sold-out shows in Germany, the U.K., Switzerland, and Scandinavia. July 23 kicks off the “Double Trouble Double Vision” co-headline tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd at amphitheaters across the United States.

Also in April, Foreigner’s legacy moves to the stage with ‘Feels Like The First Time: The Foreigner Musical’, directed by Broadway star Adam Pascal and developed with the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts and LIU’s Post Theatre Company. Set in 1985, the production follows a suburban family who win an MTV sweepstakes for a weekend visit from a rock icon. It runs eleven performances from April 17 through 26 at The Little Theatre on LIU’s Brookville campus. Tickets are on sale now at TillesCenter.org/FLTFT. And in July 2026, the band releases ‘In The Eye of The Storm’, a concert and documentary film capturing a historic 2025 performance on Ellis Island with Lou Gramm and special surprise guests.

Chip Taylor, Songwriter Behind “Wild Thing” And “Angel Of The Morning,” Dies At 86

0

Chip Taylor, the Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee who wrote two of the most covered songs in the history of popular music, died Monday in hospice care. He was 86. Born James Wesley Voight on March 21, 1940 in Yonkers, New York, Taylor leaves behind a catalog that touched virtually every corner of American music, from garage rock to country to R&B, and a legacy that will outlast most of what gets written in any given decade.

“Wild Thing” came first. Written in minutes at the request of a producer working with Jordan Christopher and the Wild Ones, the song’s raw simplicity made it irresistible. The Troggs took it to number one in July 1966. Jimi Hendrix performed it at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and set his guitar on fire when he was done. X recorded it. It appeared in Major League. Taylor considered it the beginning of punk. “It’s simple and it feels good,” he said. “It’s sweaty. Sweaty things are good.”

“Angel of the Morning” followed a different arc. First recorded by Evie Sands in 1967, it reached number seven with Merrilee Rush in 1968, then became a million-selling number four hit for Juice Newton in 1981, the first country song to play on MTV. Shaggy sampled it for his 2001 hit “Angel.” It opened Deadpool. Nina Simone, Olivia Newton-John, and the Pretenders all recorded versions. The song simply refused to stop finding new audiences.

Taylor’s catalog extended well beyond those two landmarks. Janis Joplin opened her debut album with his “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder).” Linda Ronstadt popularized “I Can’t Let Go.” Willie Nelson recorded “He Sits at Your Table.” Frank Sinatra, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, and Marshall Crenshaw all covered his songs. He signed both Billy Vera and James Taylor as a staff writer at April-Blackwood Music, CBS’s publishing arm, and formed Rainy Day Records with Al Gorgoni in 1967, releasing the Flying Machine single that first introduced James Taylor to the world.

Between 1981 and 1995, Taylor walked away from music entirely to become a professional gambler, counting cards and betting horses until casinos banned him from their floors. He returned to music in 1995, launched his own Train Wreck Records in 2007, and spent the final decades of his career making intimate Americana records, often alongside singer-violinist Carrie Rodriguez. His 2012 album carried the title that said everything about his personality. His final album, ‘The Truth And Other Things’, came out in 2025. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016, with his brother Jon Voight present to mark the occasion.

Taylor is survived by his children Kelly and Kristian, his grandchildren, his brother Jon Voight, and his brother Barry Voight. His wife Joan passed away in June 2025. He was 86 years old and had been writing songs since he was a teenager sitting in the Brill Building, certain that music was the only place he ever wanted to be.

Sea.Hear.Now is back, and the 2026 lineup is the strongest the Asbury Park festival has assembled. Mumford & Sons and The Strokes co-headline the two-day event on September 19 and 20 at North Beach and Bradley Park, with The Offspring, Goo Goo Dolls, Fontaines D.C., The War On Drugs, Moby, Chaka Khan, Pixies, The All-American Rejects, Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Men At Work, and more than 25 artists total spread across three stages. A professional two-day surf contest, immersive art installations, and an onsite gallery round out the experience that has made this one of the most distinctive festival destinations on the East Coast since its 2018 launch.

Presale tickets go on Thursday, March 26 at 10am ET, with general on-sale following at 11am, but the announcement is direct: this is the best chance to secure tickets. When the presale sells out, it sells out.
