The Behaviour Unveil Brooding New Single ‘Phantom Hands’ Ahead of Upcoming EP ‘Pedestals’

0

Hot off the back of their previous single, ‘MK Ultra’, US Alternative outfit The Behaviour, the latest musical incarnation of multi-instrumentalist Marshall Kilpatric (Today is The Day, Black Light Burns, and The Esoteric), have released their new single, a radio edited version of the track ‘Phantom Hands’, on September 19th. The track is the second offering from their upcoming EP “PEDESTALS”, which features the full version of the track, and is set for release through Rexius Records on November 21st, 2025.

Though not to be so simplistic, this song captures that essence intertwined with appreciation, devotion, admiration, hope, and loyalty. Again, as is a common theme in The Behaviour’s music, recognizing the unseen energetic force behind what lies in front of you is to be regarded with respect and honor, and this is done as if performing a spell or ritual to eloquently do so in a hopeful and timeless manner.”

Through abstract metaphors and veiled allegory, allusions are prevalent to those loved, lost, or both in these songs. Some are cautionary tales of senses possessed, or energies revered one may seek and possibly find in themselves. Others are situational reflections, while finding meaning, hope, and strength in adverse environments or predicaments. Through them all, “PEDESTALS” is a poignant representation of recent times while simultaneously striving for timelessness in its sound, vision, and messages.

The Behaviour seeks to convey these themes to the listener with broad enough strokes for anyone to find something personal to hold onto, on their own, with only a gentle push in the right direction. Perhaps in doing so, they will discover their own pedestal to behold something cherished.”

Blending alternative rock sounds, garage rock grit, and the expressive depth of blues, shoegaze, and melancholic rock, The Behaviour crafts brooding soundscapes that fit playlists for late-night drives, introspective reflection, and dark psych rock journeys. Fans of Queens of the Stone Age, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, All Them Witches, and my bloody valentine will find a familiar pulse in the project’s fuzz-drenched guitars, analog warmth, and emotionally layered vocals.

The project is led by multi-instrumentalist and producer Marshall Kilpatric, a seasoned drummer known for his work with bands such as The Esoteric and Kylesa. His career includes tours alongside Motörhead, Deftones, Chris Cornell, and The Smashing Pumpkins, and replacing Brann Dailor (later of Mastodon) in Today is the Day for their acclaimed double album Sadness Will Prevail. He also joined Black Light Burns before the release of their debut, replacing Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters). Kilpatric played on two albums—including the cover collection Cover Your Heart—and co-wrote their third, with tracks featured on the Underworld soundtracks.

With The Behaviour, Kilpatric steps into full creative control. More than a solo act, the project is a cathartic exercise in shadow work. Beneath its dark, melancholic surface lies an arc of redemption, healing, and transformation. Influenced by Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, and Pink Floyd, he crafts songs that echo with spiritual undertones and poetic intensity.

The 2023 debut, “A Sin Dance”, earned acclaim from outlets like HONK Magazine and The Joy of Violent Movement. With three new singles and an EP arriving fall 2025 via Rexius Records, The Behaviour continues to evolve—inviting listeners into a space where darkness meets clarity, and noise becomes medicine.

Late, lauded musician Dan Seals is paired with multi-platinum certified singer/songwriter, Jamey Johnson for a recreated take on the number one, uptempo Seals-penned classic, “Three Time Loser,” releasing October 17. Fans can pre-save the song here.

“Dan Seals is one of the great voices of the ’80s that sculpted the sound and style of songwriters and artists like me that were raised on that era of country music,” said Jamey Johnson.

Record label, Melody Place along with Seals’ estate, made the announcement via social media today. The track follows last month’s reimagined release of “Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)” featuring Seals with country superstar, Luke Bryan. Fans and critics alike praised the song, with American Songwriter declaring “even decades later, Seals’ music still carries the same weight, beauty, and truth it did when first released.”

Written and originally released by Seals in 1987 with renowned producer Kyle Lehning, the track climbed its way up the Billboard Country Singles chart that same year. The song appeared on his sixth studio album, On The Front Line.

The multi-genre mastermind began his career as “England Dan” in the soft rock duo, England Dan & John Ford Coley before he became an award-winning solo artist. Seals went on to achieve extraordinary success, receiving 11 number one hit songs in his lifetime, two CMA awards, and was posthumously inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2025.

Hamilton Indie Rocker Lisa SQ Battles Her Inner Saboteur on New Single ‘Make It Up to You’

0

Do you struggle with self-sabotage? Are you addicted to the drama of personal turmoil? In her buoyant yet bittersweet new single, “Make It Up to You,” Hamilton-based indie rock artist Lisa SQ wrestles with the inner saboteur, the irresistible urge to blow things up, and the hope that there’s still time to repair the mess left behind.

“Make It Up to You” is duking it out with your inner saboteur. “Make It Up to You” is resisting the urge to push the red button. “Make It Up to You” is touching the hot stove, even when you know better. “Make It Up to You” is grovelling. “Make It Up to You” is digging out of a deep hole. “Make It Up to You” is one final shot.

Recorded live at Toronto’s Dwaynespace with a trusted circle of collaborators, the track begins with the sunniest of guitar riffs from Dave Dalrymple (Wax Atlantic) and a playful body-percussion loop by Adam Hindle (Dwayne Gretzky) – created from couch slaps and self-smacks – before erupting into a full-band groove driven by Michael Brushy’s (Dwayne Gretzky) explosive drums. Nintendo-like keyboards (Simeon Abbott) and shimmering autoharp (Adam Hindle) add whimsy, while producer Ian Docherty (July Talk) ran everything through tape for just the right touch of drunken floatiness.

The inspiration? Lisa SQ’s porch-sitting neighbour, whose stories of drama, missteps, and resilience sparked musings on why some people seem to thrive in the chaos of their own undoing. “Tyler Kyte (Dwayne Gretzky) and I were talking about people who always invite drama into their lives, and I kept picturing these classic tragic heroes, doomed but relatable,” Lisa explains. “The song grew out of that and my own pacing, daydreaming, and writing in the attic.”

Born in Montreal, QC, and now based in Hamilton, ON, Lisa SQ is a multidisciplinary artist whose music blends indie rock and art pop with a nostalgic yet avant-garde edge. Influenced by Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, David Bowie, and El Perro del Mar, she crafts playful, disarming songs that celebrate the beauty in human clumsiness. Her work has been featured in films and web series screened at festivals including Austin and Cannes.

Her forthcoming debut full-length album – recorded at both Toronto’s Dwayne Space with Tyler Kyte and Ian Docherty, and at Chale Abbey Studios on the Isle of Wight with producer David Granshaw – captures the warmth, laughter, and collaborative spirit of her creative community. “Make It Up to You” offers an early glimpse: bouncy, beachy, a little bruised, and impossible not to move to.

EMF Revives Bauhaus Classic ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ with a Halloween Twist

0

Just in time for Halloween, British dance-rock quintet EMF has released a modern yet faithful cover of the Bauhaus post-punk classic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.” Incorporating the trademark indie-rave aesthetic of Forest of Dean’s favorite sons within the dark confines of the iconic midnight anthem, EMF brings new life to the undead classic.

“At the local pub in our teenage years was a jukebox,” recalls vocalist Ian Atkin. “The go-to record that eventually got worn out by us was Bauhaus’ ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead.’ To be able to revisit this and do our own EMF-inspired cover version is a real treat for us, a real Halloween treat, that is. It may come as a surprise, but we embraced true goth culture in our youth. The first band I actually saw play live was The Mission.”

The first band guitarist Ian Dench saw, however, was the band who provided the source material. He recalls, “I saw Bauhaus play at Bristol Locarno in the U.K. on October 10, 1982. I was 18. Their energy and the way they created an atmosphere was electrifying, especially when they played ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’.”

Their rendition of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” caught the ear of Bauhaus guitarist David J, who commented, “A colony of bats burst out from the Forest of Dean to the soundtrack of ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ fed through a contemporary minimalist dystopian filter. The tight rhythmic dub echoes making for a propulsive drive that sees this compact and condensed cover rush past the finishing line in misty Transylvania.”

Having had a triumphant return to the U.S. earlier this year on tour with Spacehog, EMF was riding on a crest of newfound and rejuvenated popularity. Their fifth album The Beauty and the Chaos (released in January 2024), which included the critically-hailed single “Hello People,” garnered pages of glowing press including British tome Retropop who hailed that the album “reaffirms EMF’s place in the pop landscape and proves, even three decades later, they’re still capable of delivering material to the standard of their classic recordings.” With dozens of glowing press coverage that extended to the U.S. with features in SPIN, Consequence, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Rock And Roll Globe, among dozens of others., EMF’s return was heralded with welcoming open arms.

Exploding on the U.K. scene in November 1990 with their debut album Schubert Dip, EMF made quite an entrance with their inescapable and irresistibly catchy single “Unbelievable,” which conquered the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK. The single was certified gold in May 1991 in the U.S., and it sold over 500k. The song was in such heavy rotation for most of the year in America that it finished as the #6 single overall. Schubert Dip was certified platinum in the U.S. by September of that year, selling over one million.
