UB40 Announce 40th Anniversary Tour

UB40 is embarking on a worldwide tour to celebrate 40 years and will bring their fans the timeless hits they’ve loved over the last four decades.

UB40, an English reggae band have hit over 100 million records sold and have had dozens of chart-topping singles including “Red Red Wine” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You.” The band has had over 50 singles on the UK single chart and has been nominated for the Grammy Award for the Best Reggae Album.

Now, with the 40th Anniversary Tour, there is going to be a lot to celebrate. To mark the milestone, in addition to going on tour, the group will be releasing a new album, “For The Many”, their 19th studio album.

The band will also be releasing two companion versions of “For The Many”, as Brian Travers explains, “We have really enjoyed making this album, a huge amount of work went into it. It became a massive piece of work so, in addition to the regular version of the album, there will be a dub version and a collaboration version, featuring guest artists from all around the world.”

Co-vocalist and guitarist Robin Campbell added, “‘For The Many’ is a great mix of reggae styles, while the different artists we have collaborated with will appeal to more fans and tastes in reggae – it really is an album for the many. The 2019 tour is a continuation of our 40th year celebrations, as well as sharing tracks from our latest album. Twenty-three dates around the US instead of a few arenas means that our fans from all over the USA can get to see us much more locally and up close – truly a tour for the many.”

“It’s incredibly exciting having the opportunity to revisit some of our favourite cities,” said Brian Travers,”to travel the world playing our music to some of our oldest friends is a huge privilege and now we are back with our new album ‘For The Many’. Looking forward to seeing you all out there … .”

In UB40 prime time, many of their songs hit #1 on the Billboard charts including “Red Red Wine”, “Can’t Help Falling In Love (From “Sliver”)”, “The Way You Do The Things You Do”, “Here I Am (Come And Take Me)” and “I Got You Babe”.

UB40’s 40th Anniversary Tour will also kick off in early 2019, with shows across the U.S., the U.K., Europe and Australia. UB40 consists of Five of the Six founding members Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer and Norman Hassan in addition long-time members Duncan Campbell (vocals), Martin Meredith (saxophone), Laurence Parry (trumpet) and Tony Mullings (keyboards).

Billboard To Honor Janelle Monáe & Cyndi Lauper At 13th Annual Women in Music Event

Billboard will honor Janelle Monáe and Cyndi Lauper at its 13th annual Women in Music event on December 6 in New York City. Monáe will accept the Trailblazer Award while Lauper will accept the Icon Award at the same ceremony as previously announced “Woman of the Year” recipient Ariana Grande. The highly regarded event, held in conjunction with the release of Billboard’s Women in Music issue, will also honor the most powerful female executives in the industry.

“The entire world recognizes the power of Cyndi Lauper’s pop music, and just as crucially, she has used her undeniable talent to soar beyond music, create positive change in modern society and become a true Icon,” says Billboard’s Editorial Director, Jason Lipshutz. “And Janelle Monáe’s insatiable drive to incorporate new, untold stories into her artistic projects — while synthesizing classic funk, soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop and rock — makes her a truly unique voice. Popular music is more interesting today because Janelle Monáe is part of it.”

The Icon Award recognizes a female artist of extraordinary accomplishment whose historic contributions to the industry and artistry of music establish her among the highest class of all­-time performers. Over the course of her four­-decade career, Cyndi Lauper has contributed timeless hits to the pop canon (including eight top 10 hits on the Hot 100 chart). She has been lauded for her work in film, TV and theater, and is a GRAMMY, TONY and EMMY winner. Cyndi’s groundbreaking sound and style continue to influence generations of musicians and fans, and she is also a celebrated humanitarian and advocate. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the True Colors Fund, which Lauper co-­founded to end youth homelessness among the LGBTQ community.

The Trailblazer Award recognizes a female artist who acts as a pioneer within the music industry by using her platform to amplify unheard voices and break ground for future generations of performers. Janelle Monáe has helped redefine how a black woman can be represented in popular culture over the past decade, and with her No. 6-peaking album Dirty Computer — along with its sci-fi-inflected accompanying film project of the same name — she has continued unleashing her creativity in striking new ways.

The 13th annual Women in Music event and red-carpet pre-show will be broadcast live on Twitter, 7pm-10pm EST on December 6. Additional honorees of Billboard’s 2018 Women in Music event will be announced in the coming weeks.

Verve Records To Pay Tribute To Its Legendary Founder Norman Granz And His Centennial With Four-Disc Box Set ‘The Founder’

In jazz circles, few names command more respect than Norman Granz. Although he wasn’t a musician, Granz (1918-2001) was as responsible as any individual for popularizing jazz and promoting the careers of many of the genre’s greatest artists. Granz’s incredible half-century career first took off with his creation of the groundbreaking Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series. But Granz was equally influential for the series of record labels that he launched in the 1940s and 1950s: Clef, Norgran and Verve.

Those companies became home to many of jazz’s most important and influential artists. And, unlike many of his contemporaries, Granz combined his love for the music with a passion for social justice, championing African-American musicians at a time when those musicians were often exploited and disrespected.

Now, in honor of the hundredth anniversary of Norman Granz’s birth, Verve/UMe has assembled The Founder, a four-CD/digital box set celebrating his remarkable life and career. The historic package—which will release on December 7—features a massive chronological assortment of music spanning Granz’s remarkable career and featuring music by most of the great musicians he recorded.

The package also includes illuminating liner notes by jazz historian and Granz authority Tad Hershorn, author of the Granz biography Norman Granz: The Man Who Used Jazz for Justice. As Hershorn writes, “The underpinnings of Granz’s lifelong devotion to jazz came when, as a near-impoverished but ambitious UCLA student, he began his trek to African-American nightclubs along Central Avenue, not far from where he was born the son of Ukrainian Jewish immigrants.”

“Granz hit the clubs almost nightly when musicians began welcoming him behind the scenes to observe rehearsals, after-hours clubs, and house parties. He saw them as ‘marvelous crucibles,’ hearing the friendly, intense competition as musicians challenged their peers and developed their styles. His early experiences led to his preference for musical blow-by-blow competition and emphasizing the emotional over intellectual qualities in jazz. Granz took it a step further when he aligned the jam session with the democratic ideal, whereby you could either stand and deliver, or you couldn’t. Skin color made no difference. ‘As in genuine democracy, only performance counts,’ Granz told the NAACP’s magazine, The Crisis, in 1947. ‘Jazz is truly the music of democratic America.'”

Granz’s parallel passions for jazz and social justice was reflected in the ambitious artist lineups he assembled for his Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, many of which are featured on The Founder. These shows were almost single-handedly responsible for moving jazz from smoky clubs to prestigious theaters and, in the process, introduced jazz improvisation to new and receptive audiences. The series also helped to break down many of the era’s social barriers, showcasing a racially-mixed assortment of musicians and singers from a variety of musical backgrounds.

The four CDs that comprise The Founder encompass some of the most significant jazz music recorded in the 20th century, beginning with Granz’s founding of the Clef label in 1942 and culminating in his retirement and departure from Verve Records (which he’d launched four years earlier) in 1960.

Disc 1 opens in 1942, during the early wild-west days of independent label recording, with historic performances by such rising players as Dexter Gordon, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker and Lester Young, who were among the first musicians that Granz recorded. Disc 1 also captures a young Nat “King” Cole, accompanied by Illinois Jacquet and Les Paul, on the crowd-thrilling “Blues,” which contrasts with the bouncy pop which would later make Cole a mainstream superstar.

Disc 2, which spans 1949-1954, finds Granz settled in at the top of the jazz world and recording a varied assortment of some of jazz’s leading lights, including the great pianist Oscar Peterson, charismatic vocalists Anita O’Day and Fred Astaire, and innovative bandleaders Count Basie and Benny Carter.

Disc 3, recorded between 1954 and 1957, encompasses the early years of the Norgran and Verve labels, which Granz founded during that period, and features historic performances by such icons as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Lester Young and Lionel Hampton.

Disc 4, which covers 1957-1960, shows Granz ending on a high note, culminating his career at Verve with history-making performances by Dizzy Gillespie, Blossom Dearie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Ben Webster, Paul Desmond, Stuff Smith, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Giuffre and Mel Tormé.

It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate tribute to Norman Granz’s visionary genius than this incredible musical testament.

Michael Bublé Announces More Canadian 2019 Tour Dates

Grammy Award-Winning, Michael Bublé announced his return to performing in Canada with an 11-city cross-country tour. The tour will kick off in Bublé’s hometown of Vancouver, BC on Friday, April 12 and will wrap in Quebec City, QC on Saturday, August 3. Due to overwhelming demand, additional tour dates have been added in Toronto and Montreal.

Every full priced ticket purchased for the tour includes a standard CD or digital copy of Michael’s highly anticipated new album love. love is Michael’s 8th major studio album for Reprise Records and will be available November 16th.

Latest Release In Universal Music Canada’s Icon Series, Big Sugar: Icon, Out Today

Today, Platinum-selling Canadian band Big Sugar release a snapshot of some of their most popular radio and live hits with a brand-new compilation album. New Order’s “Blue Monday” Played On Floppy Disks

Oh, the irony. Paweł Zadrożniak’s Floppotron performs yet gift of a tune, the 1983 New Order smash Blue Monday. When the original song was released, it had unique packaging was designed by Peter Saville and Brett Wickens. It features a die-cut sleeve designed to resemble a 5¼” floppy disk. The front cover features no words, but instead has code in the form of coloured blocks that reads out the artist, song, and label information, once deciphered. The original song still stands as the best-selling 12″ single of all time.

Watch Patti Smith Read A 3-Hour Version Of Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis In The Former Chapel Of Reading Prison

In October 2016, Patti Smith read Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis in the former chapel of Reading Prison, Reading.

Oscar Wilde was incarcerated in Reading Prison, then known as Reading Gaol, 1895-97 for ‘Acts of Gross Indecency with Other Male Persons.’ While there he wrote De Profundis, a 50,000-word letter to his former lover Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie).

In September 2016 Artangel opened Reading Prison to the public for the first time for an exhibition of art, writing and performance. Inside: Artists and Writers in Reading Prison is open until 4 December 2016.

Patti Smith reads the first edited version of De Profundis, published five years after Wilde’s death in 1905.
